The real question... is this dude allowed at Bucees?

No the super truckers and guys that have been driving less than a year think it's a constitutional amendment that only freight haulers can park in a truck stop
View on Reddit #49771077

mrockracing@reddit

I mean, in defense of those drivers, we only have a few places to go, and they won't get kicked out of everywhere like we will. I plan far in advance, but you can't always predict what's going to happen, traffic etc. Then if you pay to reserve a spot, you can't always get your money back. Usually you can, but not always if the person on the phone isn't feeling you that day for whatever reason. The solution is for more truckstops and better state run facilities.
View on Reddit #49777127

charonco@reddit

I find the opposite is true. I frequently have to drive late into the night. Since I'm a responsible person I plan ahead and reserve my spot early. Then I pull in at 2 am ready to just get shut down only to find that someone has taken my spot and Pilot refuses to make them move and gives me a refund. What the he'll am I supposed to do with a refund? I can't park on it.
View on Reddit #49783880

mrockracing@reddit

I royally gate it when that happens, which is why I try and reserve at TA's when I can. They actually make people move.

Advanced_Ad514@reddit

Wait a minute, truckers have to pay to park?
View on Reddit #49926627

DaSaw@reddit

Yeah. When I reserve I park, go in to pick up my ticket, come back out, and by the time I'm back at my truck Security is already there looking for the ticket. They do not mess around, and I appreciate it.
View on Reddit #49815067

Ryo0hki4242@reddit

I set up my schedules where I wake up around 4 or 5 and can park around the same time so I don't have to hunt and fight for parking. Only failed me a few times like that loves in Charlotte that never has spaces no matter what time you get there

When that happens, I will park that truck wherever I feel like it (that isn’t blocking parked trucks) and put that reserved spot receipt in the window and call it a night. And I’m praying that an employee comes out and says something to me!

We need to lobby with them to create Truckees. No 4-wheelers allowed. 100 fuel pumps and 500 overnight parking spots, with a second out building that just has toilets and showers.

I have a much bigger problem with bobtailers using full spots than I do with large RVs using them. At least the bobtailer should know better.
View on Reddit #49784128

ohmygodbees@reddit

So where should the bobtail park when there are a bunch of trailers in the bobtail spots and the truck stop kicks em out of the front lot?

View on Reddit #49821139

J-Kensington@reddit

I've parked everywhere in a bobtail. Metered spaces downtown that aren't metered overnight. Regular gas statios. Hardware stores. Regular grocery stores. A lot of warehouse facilities are more accommodating to bobtails than full t/t rigs. State parks. Most of the time people see bobtails and just see an RV, so I've never really gotten bothered in one, especially if you have an APU or smart start idle so you're not causing a lot of noise overnight. Anywhere you can fit, be out of the way, and not over the weight limit you're usually fine, especially for just 10 hours.

View on Reddit #49842877

TouchMyBoomstick@reddit

What about when bobtails double stack to use the full spot?
View on Reddit #49813840

DaSaw@reddit

That's fine. When I park bobtail, I try to find a spot where another bobtail can get in front of me but I can still get out, such as a single row middle spot, or an edge spot. But if there just isn't anything? Yeah, not much we can do about it.

The real question, do you need a CDL to drive it since it's an RV and not being driven for hire or to make money?
View on Reddit #49793522

Zodi88@reddit

Given the GVWR and combination, I would say a class A is necessary.

[Texas Administration code](https://texreg.sos.state.tx.us/public/readtac$ext.TacPage?sl=R&app=9&p_dir=&p_rloc=&p_tloc=&p_ploc=&pg=1&p_tac=&ti=37&pt=1&ch=16&rl=3) > (4) A person operating a vehicle that is a recreational vehicle that is driven for personal use. (A) For purposes of this exemption recreational vehicle means a vehicular type unit primarily designed as temporary living quarters for recreational camping or travel use that either has its own motive power or is mounted on or towed by another vehicle. (B) This exemption includes travel trailers, camping trailers, truck campers, and motor homes.
View on Reddit #49795668

Zodi88@reddit

That's Texas, and it doesn't mention weight or combination. Federal requirements are a combination vehicle over 26k lbs for the power unit and over 10k lbs for the trailer. The power unit in this setup alone requires a CDL-A.
View on Reddit #49813466

Helpful_Finger_4854@reddit

Any motor home registered in Texas can be driven by anyone with a valid Texas driver's license. Other states respect the laws of where the vehicle is located and the residency of the driver license holder under the interstate compact. Also, federal law also has [the same exemption](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/hours-service/hours-service-frequently-asked-questions-non-business-transportation) from the FMCSA.
View on Reddit #49816501

Zodi88@reddit

It still seems like you would need a non-commercial Class A license in Texas. https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/classes-driver-licenses
View on Reddit #49827354

mxracer888@reddit

In Texas yes, they have a non commercial Class A and this rig would easily fall into that requirement. In many states, assuming the rig has been properly titled as an RV it wouldn't need any CDL or anything beyond a regular Class D (or Class C if that's what your state calls it) to operate All that being said, DOT might still hassle this owner. Part of the rules of converting a class8 tractor to an RV require that the vehicle "clearly can't be used for commercial purposes" or something along those lines. As with most federal regulations, that's pretty vague... However it's generally accepted that removing the commercial hitch plate, trailer air brake service, and the commercial 7-way plug are how you accomplish "clearly unable to be used for commercial purposes" The trailer in this pic appears to likely be a commercial style trailer using the commercial plate with air brake service and all that good stuff, and if that's true then DOT could potentially still give this guy grief because he could just simply unhook the trailer and go pull any ol trailer in commerce

Going the other direction, I know someone with an extended cab Freightliner that then has a sleeper behind that. The reason is that you get 4 or 5 seats in the cab but still have a bunk for passengers to relax in since not all areas allow traveling in the trailer.
View on Reddit #49820724

Yeah there’s another whole subset of rv’ers that use HDT RV’s those are more so regular smaller 5th wheels that people use class 8 trucks to pull with you’ve probably seen them it’ll usually have a car/motorcycles/SxS on the back of the truck in front of the trailer

https://blog.campingworld.com/learn-to-rv/what-states-can-you-ride-in-a-travel-trailer-or-fifth-wheel/ I dunno if it qualifies as an "RV trailer", tho. Maybe some other law applies because of the high vehicle weight, or length, or axle count, or who knows.
View on Reddit #49778858

Probably without the side panels out expanding the space. You also can't ride inside the trailer without a seatbelt. If I had a little bit of land on a beach this would be perfect I would build my own bathroom and connect well water and then you be set.
