Poor denise crosby quit before 1 season and then spent the rest of her career doing random bit parts on shows like jag family law, crossing jordan etc

The fact she thought she was the " hot blonde" on the show was hysterical.
K1ngsGambit@reddit
Spotted her in a minor recurring role on Ray Donovan. I get her wanting to leave the show. She didn't know what the future of it would be and rightly felt her character would be a bit flat.
In a way, I think Yar could have been among the more interesting characters since she wasn't born and bred Starfleet. Unlike the other officers, she grew up on a harsh planet of criminals so she would've been able to provide some character drama all the others were prevented from doing by Rodenberry's rule that there be no interpersonal conflict. But the actress didn't want to wait for the show to 'grow a beard' :-)
l008com@reddit
I've seen every episode of TNG a million times, but they don't often show season 1 episodes on reruns. A few years ago, I did my first in-order full viewing of TNG. And I have to say. Season 1 was BAD. Really bad. Much worse than I remembered. Truly aweful. Season 2 wasn't great either, but I can at least see how season 2 could get renewed for another year. But I am SHOCKED that the show was renewed after season 1. It was that bad.
And then somehow, season 3 rolls around and the show instantly becomes with amazing masterpiece of television, just like that.
But anyway, yeah I can see why someone would want to get out while the gettin's good in season 1. And worf was obviously a way better security officer, there was really no place for tasha. She was kind of extra.
Theborgiseverywhere@reddit
Not necessarily bad just very different tone overall. The characters, plots, and dialog all attempted at this “loftier” quality, but for me it just made them seem wooden and a bit aloof.
Compare Season 1 of TNG to Star Trek IV, which came out the same year. It’s like two different franchises
ExistentDavid1138@reddit
Season 1 and 2 were not bad that's just being overly harsh there some great episodes in those seasons.
Stuma27@reddit
Some of the episodes were horrible. Code of Honor, for example.
philandere_scarlet@reddit
There's some good episodes in season 1 but no all-timers.
11001001, Home Soil, Heart of Glory, The Arsenal of Freedom, and Symbiosis are all decent, but definitely all drag a little with that kind of '60s pacing (and that's 5 out of 25 episodes).
Notably, Heart of Glory and The Arsenal of Freedom both involve some inter-crew or internal conflict (Worf battling with his Klingon values, and Geordi standing up for himself against that engineering guy), which was otherwise frowned upon by Roddenberry. 11001001 was mostly good for its cool aliens, the Min stuff wasn't very interesting.
philandere_scarlet@reddit
There are also some I could imagine being good with later TNG/DS9 writing, and with later TNG budgets... Skin of Evil could have been neat if Armus didn't look terrible, and if anyone had known how to write Troi properly at the time. The Neutral Zone and Encounter at Farpoint are also decent frameworks for episodes that just weren't executed very well.
brakeb@reddit
Even DS9 suffered in the first season, but Season 2 got into the swing of things... I enjoy seeing the changes to Rene Auberjonois' (RIP, amazing human) makeup as Odo...
THey knew pretty quickly on that Sisko was not a "Q" type Captain...
philandere_scarlet@reddit
Because you wouldn't station a captain on a space station that wasn't supposed to be very important
brakeb@reddit
One of a kind wormhole to a new galaxy, heading up a treaty with the federation and a protectorate planet (Bajor) with a known semi-hostile, but Romulan wannabe.
It took until near the end of Season 3 to get his Captaincy...
bucknert@reddit
Wormhole wasn’t discovered until Sisko was assigned. DS9 was a backwater location with little strategic value. They have some dialogue about it being on the frontier which makes little sense in the context of the show, it’s literally just on the border with another military power but appears to be mostly known and in some cases, already colonized space given the Maquis.
The thing that didn’t make sense was why once the wormhole was discovered Sisko wasn’t replaced with a higher ranking officer as well as a permanent Federation fleet presence? You can head canon away that Sisko’s connection to the wormhole aliens was probably the reason Starfleet kept him there, but it made nearly no sense that with the massive strategic value of the wormhole that multiple powers wouldn’t have tried to claim it or take control. Stationing just one “tough little ship” was also a pittance for the defense of the station once the Dominion made their presence known as well.
EternalLostandFound@reddit
Judging from the first episode, I thought that his career advancement must have stalled out after his wife died. So much of the pilot was about him grappling with being a single father, letting go of his anger toward Picard, and moving on from her death; he would’ve been a very different character if he had put off grieving and raising Jake to focus on getting promoted to captain during this time. I assumed that Starfleet put him there to get him back on track, and it was just a bonus that the wormhole was discovered shortly after he took the position.
wb6vpm@reddit
It actually does make sense that Starfleet would have assigned only a Commander as commanding officer for DS9 for a couple of reasons: - it’s not actually a Federation/Starfleet station, it’s Bajoran - assigning a Captain (or an Admiral) to the station might have been taken as SF trying to flex its power over the Bajoran Malitia/Provisional Government, and intimidate them - at the time, they knew nothing of the wormhole, or how important the station would become - it’s a backwoods podunk hole in the wall that no one really cared about until the wormhole was discovered
Gullible-Fee-9079@reddit
There is a reason why it is called Deep Sleep 9 for the first two seasons.
factionssharpy@reddit
If they weren't executed very well, then they weren't good.
Sure, maybe those bones could have been good, but they weren't.
I might watch a few episodes from those first two seasons, but I would not willingly subject myself again to watching them in total. Most of them range between merely mostly boring and aggressively awful.
philandere_scarlet@reddit
I didn't say they were good. I just see the potential in them. Same with some Voyager episodes, like Cold Fire.
Brilliant-Deer6118@reddit
I agree. They were only bad when you compare them to the rest of the series.
Stuma27@reddit
And head writer/ showrunner Hurley who left after season 2.
mightysoulman@reddit
The TREK movies and the concurrent TVZ series WERE two different franchises using the same IP. They were made by different folk. They shared sets and props and wardrobe however and attempted to share continuity as best as possible.
It's more complicated than you or I made it sound.
However, what I really came here to say is that part of the difference between season 1 and later seasons was that some TNG episodes were using scripts and plot ideas that were originally intended for the 1960s STAR TREK that ended up shelved for a few decades.
duckfeethuman@reddit
NPC comment. Nothing new to say.
Milyaism@reddit
I recently started a TNG rewatch and hoo boy it was hard to get through s1, and s2 at points too.
Also Tasha in one of the scenes just blurting her backstory like that made me cringe so hard. Like what were the writers thinking?
Garguyal@reddit
The show survived season one on the back of the Star Trek name and the utter lack of any other science fiction on TV at the time.
Bureaucratic_Dick@reddit
Season 2 was the writers strike. It was bad, but had an excuse. Plus it did have a few solid gems.
And Tasha was a solid character, but the writing room just didn’t know how to give women good plot lines. I would have quit too after “Code of Honor” and having to use the phrase “rape gangs” as often as they made her. It did not bode well for the direction of the character.
Thestickleman@reddit
I don't think S1 is all that terrible
brakeb@reddit
uh, okay...
brakeb@reddit
Season 1 was probably a lot of recycled ideas from TOS and from the failed follow-on series they tried greenlight after TOS, but before TNG... as someone who watched the series again after when it was live, it seemed to turn a corner at "measure of a man"...
watanabe0@reddit
It was Michael Piller. Didn't just magically happen.
Lisan_Al_Gaib23@reddit
A hundred times this. Michael Piller was the anti-Rick.
Abe_Bettik@reddit
That's why I don't get people who complain about Season 1 of... anything, really. S1 of DS9 and VOY are both a little flat compared to the rest of their series but they're both stellar compared to S1 TNG.
S1 of Enterprise is an absolute masterpiece if you judge it by Star Trek S1 standards.
It's a shame because nowadays if a show isn't a masterpiece by the first two episodes, people just stop watching it.
Virtual-Ad-2260@reddit
There are more awful episodes than good ones during the entire series IMO.
adjust_the_sails@reddit

Vernknight50@reddit
Compared to a lot of 80's TV, season 1 was pretty good.

Desperate-Fan-3671@reddit
Well her leaving let the character Worf get more into the spotlight.
I_only_post_here@reddit
You bring up an interesting point about Tasha's background and how it would be a different perspective from a more typical Starfleet officer... I wonder if Ensign Ro was created as a character to fill out those kinds of plot lines that would have been Tasha-centric episodes.
fastbadtuesday@reddit
I always imagined early Kira Nerys in DS9 is how Yar could have gone, brisling against orders that felt political and speaking out for the one instead of the many, questioning the broader rules and orders. Then again Yar adored Starfleet and saw it as her saviour, mentioing an officer that saved her in the pilot inspired her to join, so she could have gone the way of all the others.
mightysoulman@reddit
Which is, of course, how her backstory mirrors Data's.
Did her backstory get mined for Worf's?

You wonder why you're getting downvoted. It may be because you're giving off the vibe of someone who has theory about Crosby's motivations and/or feelings about season about season 1, aren't willing to say what they are, but also probably unwilling to change them...whatever they may be.
You've responded with "I ain't buying that..." and "Lol" to two different replies that were respectful and based on some reasonable and longstanding conclusions related to issues about the show that have been talked to death for, literally, decades. One person provided a quote from Crosby and, after the "Lol OK" opener (for a reply that may appear to some be a low effort post due its near complete lack punctuation/grammar in combination with its dismissiveness) you went all cynical chic with an insinuation that Crosby said what she said for the sake of money.
That doesn't make a lot of sense and, combined with the overall tone, of your responses, it isn't surprising you're comments are getting downvoted.

She fumbled her career, fumbled hard. But we can only say that in hindsight.
She grew up around directors, producers, talent agents. She was raised around people that would have been in her ear about her talent and all the opportunities.
Crot_Chmaster@reddit
If she had any talent, sure, but that's not the case.
Raguleader@reddit
It's always fascinating to see how the fandom reacts to an actress from the first season of TNG who left the show and then tried to come back a couple of seasons later.
https://i.redd.it/td1ih0b8cnme1.gif
But anyways enough about Beverly Crusher.
-PM_Me_Dat_Ass_Girl-@reddit
The irony is she kept pitching execs to bring back her character after she had them kill her off, LOL.
She was fortunate to get thrown a bone in Sela and the episode where the Enterprise-C comes out of the time rift.
Groundbreaking-Pea92@reddit (OP)
not irony she was trying to get back in the ecosystem for that sweet fan $$ and jobs
-PM_Me_Dat_Ass_Girl-@reddit
It's ironic because she asked to be killed off in the first season only to ask execs to retcon her death and recast her.
Raguleader@reddit
Man can you imagine any Star Trek actor doing that and expecting any respect from the fandom?
https://i.redd.it/vgldkpycbnme1.gif
ElGuaco@reddit
That's not irony.
Crot_Chmaster@reddit
She thought she'd move on to bigger and better things.
Problem is, she's utterly talentless. She can't act her way out of a wet paper bag. So, she didn't get much work.
While she struggled to find anybody that would hire her, TNG became a sensation. Thus, she was desperate to come back.
Unfortunately, she was allowed to come back as a guest and her total lack of acting ability was on full display again. Thankfully, it was short lived.
Crot_Chmaster@reddit

Dorn would have left if Denise hadn't - he had nothing to do in the first season (though he got one episode focused on him) and if it wasn't for his character's promotion he would have left at the end of the season.
And Gates got fired.
And Marina was worried about being written out because of her poor character.
BearsBeetsBerlin@reddit
Wait gates got fired? I thought she left the show because she was pregnant?
watanabe0@reddit
Nope.
BearsBeetsBerlin@reddit
Just looked it up, wow, what a bad time to be an actress. “Hey this is shitty and degrading.” Then get told, “okay there’s the door”. Glad she came back. The first few seasons were pretty gross for women.
watanabe0@reddit
Nah, they only got her back because Patrick thought she was treated badly and Marina missed her drinking buddy.
Gates is the worst regular actor of the Berman era, and Crusher the weakest character.
Pulaski 4 life!
wb6vpm@reddit
Fuck Pulaski. I hated her character completely. The character had way too much of a stick up her ass, making her just seem like an egotistical maniac.
ClintBarton616@reddit
I love Pulaski too but this is a crazy thing to say about Gates McFadden
BearsBeetsBerlin@reddit
Haha I just commented on a Pulaski thread. And yeah, Beverly was a pretty throwaway character, her storylines were always one dimensional and nothing would have changed in the overall story if she wasn’t there. She was just Wesley’s mom and Picards on again off again love interest.
mmacrone@reddit
Dorn's whole role in Season 1 was to get shut down with prejudice.
tnetennba77@reddit
I never heard that about Dorn, where did you read it? He would go on to have the most appearances in trek of any actor so he had a lot to do.
King_of_Tejas@reddit
I don't think Dorn would have left. Prior to this, his biggest role was the cop who called TJ Hooker for backup.
watanabe0@reddit
He's said so, even in the official interviews.
King_of_Tejas@reddit
Do you know where I could find one of the interviews? Was it in a magazine or something?
Bit of a long shot, he's given many interviews and they're not all online
King_of_Tejas@reddit

honeybadger1984@reddit
She was right to leave at the time, same as Wil. She had a lead role in Pet Cemetery and left a small part in TNG for bigger opportunities. She had no idea the show would get good around season three and become a big deal, along with movie deals.
Wil at the time was a child star and in films. He figured the show wouldn’t have legs like film acting. It’s a best guess.
ImRonniemundt@reddit
She said she didn't want that life lol and we got more Worf so yay
shibbington@reddit
Yeah, I just spotted her as a nurse in some late 90s X-Files. I thought, oh cool, Denise Crosby. This must develop into a recurring character. Nope. Rando nurse with 2 innocuous lines.
Thog13@reddit
Well, TNG wasn't very good at developing and utilizing female characters. Each of the main women had their struggles with the show. Even though the fans loved them, the scripts often treated them as set dressing.
Denise was the first to push back. She didn't like the results, so she ditched. Imagine if she stayed for the run and was miserable. It's possible that her leaving had a positive effect on how things turned out for Gates and Marina, who also had issues with their use on the show.
I think she did the right thing. Denise got far meatier Trek roles after Yarr died and has remained popular with the fans. It's impossible to know if anyone would remember her name if it wasn't for TNG. And it's not like the rest of the cast has big acting careers outside of Trek, except Stewart.
Ridiculousnessmess@reddit
And given that Maurice Hurley fired Gates MacFadden after season one, who knows how much longer Crosby would have remained had she not quit. Her father in law back then was Blake Edwards, who cast in several of his films. She divorced Edwards’ son in 1990, and it’s possible that might have had some additional impact on her career momentum.
bbbourb@reddit
This movie made me laugh so hard I cried. John Ritter at his absolute best.
Ridiculousnessmess@reddit
She had multiple films under her belt before the TNG, and went on to be the female lead in Pet Sematary (which was a box office success). Sure she didn’t become a star in her own right, but she’s worked consistently.
I’ve heard many stories of regulars on TV shows being frustrated and quitting because they get nothing substantial to do. Sure it’s ego to some degree, but if you’re cast in a TV show with 16-hour days, you want to have a chance to show what you’re capable of.
I loved Tasha (I was like ten when I got into TNG) and was distraught when she was killed off. I can see the issues with how she was written, but I still see the potential that was there. I still wish things had gone differently, but I don’t begrudge her for quitting, either.
Groundbreaking-Pea92@reddit (OP)
right I remember back in the day people were the wife in pet cemetery is lighting hollywood on fire
Ridiculousnessmess@reddit
You seem to think that because she didn’t become a star in her own right after leaving TNG that her career was a failure. By that metric most acting careers are failures, then. Working consistently in an incredibly tough business is it’s own form of success.

By all definitions, she has had a successful career. She’s made a similar amount of money as the other actors on TNG and earned a strong reputation with fans despite her limited screen time. Other than her house burning down in the LA fires, which is awful, I don’t think she’s worthy of much pity
MonCappy@reddit
Seeing that let me to a thought. If John Ritter were still alive, he'd only be 78 today. That is how young he was when he died.

Buuut she also went on to star in Deep Impact. And she starred in the film Arizona Heat. I've seen both these films. In the latter she got her breasts out.

kamdan2011@reddit
I often wonder what it would have been like if Crosby and Sirtis would have stuck with their initial castings. They only switched due to Roddenberry’s wacky notions. I always liked her look here and think it would have been suitable for a chief of security.

jonny_jon_jon@reddit
Denise made it known that she wasn’t a fan of the “stand there, chest out, shoulders back” stage direction on TNG. Outside of LeVar and Will, she’s the only one who had name recognition.
Show ratings were not stellar; she didn’t like the working environment; and she had some name recognition…she made a good decision for her based on that situation.
Imma_da_PP@reddit
I think, career wise, it was a bad call. With the information she had at the time (the show sucked) and the fans were loving it, plus it was very much an ensemble, she figured she could do better. She wasn’t wrong to gamble on herself but…didn’t quite workout.
That said, I think the show needed to drop a character. More female members of the ensemble would’ve been great but Tasha and Worf were a bit duplicative. The show benefitted from having one warrior/war orphan security officer.
Big-Restaurant-623@reddit

jsonitsac@reddit
TNG was a sinking ship at the time. Bad scripts, behind the scenes drama, and fan hatred. Meanwhile Tasha and Beverly were afterthoughts in each script. It was only kept alive thanks to Paramount bundling it with the TOS rerun rights.
Given all that do you blame her for the decision she made?
KindLiterature3528@reddit
I can't really blame her for leaving. If the quality of the show had stayed at season 1 levels, it probably wouldn't have lasted much longer. Add to that her character was overshadowed by most of the rest of the main cast. It's understandable why it seemed like a smart career move at the time.
JediSnoopy@reddit
It happens in show business. She's not the only actor to leave a show only to have a less substantial career than hoped. Keep in mind that TNG's ratings were not super great and she was in a cast of 9 people. There's also the vibe given by those in charge that can affect any workplace to consider, as well. Hope springs eternal in Hollywood. Plenty of people have gone on to more impressive things.
No one leaves a hit show believing they're only going to get bit parts for the rest of their career.
SebastianHaff17@reddit
There's something deeply patronising about this stance. You don't know what motivated her in life. There is more to life than constantly working (in their case) 14 hour days.
She said she was bored standing there for hours on end with nothing to do. She said she doesn't regret leaving. And sure she could putting on a brave face and sure she may think "What if" and she may have some more cash in her pocket, but is that all there is to life? And who are you to judge her success by your own metrics?
I think we need to accept that people are motivated by different things. Michelle Forbes turned down a major role in Trek not once but twice - knowing full well how successful Trek was. Because the daily grind and being stuck in one role was not for her.
Respect these women's decisions as their own.

Having seen interviews with her, I can totally understand her wanting to leave. She was required to be on set, in those awful season 1 costumes, and just stand there. I remember one interview where she pitched just getting a pair of mannequin legs to place in her spot because that was all that would be seen in several episodes.
Of course, in hindsight, if she knew what the show would become, she would have stuck with it. Also, if the showrunners knew what the show would become, they might have been more accommodating to the actors involved.

If by getting “Jadziad” you mean getting killed off because you got another series regular role and Rick Berman didn’t want to deal with the hassle of scheduling around it then none of these other actors you mention were ever at risk of being “jadziad” - Terry wanted to stay on and do both shows but Rick said no.
