What is this called? Is this better than electric kettles, never seen this before
View on Reddit #49732751

verg51@reddit

It’s the bare minimum of a kettle. You place it in a cup of water and turn it on(No button, just stick it in a socket). It was getting really popular in the Soviet Union from 1920’s and is still in use today in prisons and in workplaces where there is no space for an electric kettle
View on Reddit #49746784

rakfe@reddit

I am intrigued, I haven’t seen it in this form before and it looks like it can be of use in flexible ways. Interesting.

Yeah, even if the technology is old as fuck it still is the best way of boiling water in field conditions, on road trips. It’s a useful thing to have in the car in case shit hits the fan and there is no way of getting a fresh coffee(assuming you have water and ground coffee)

Just boil your tea water in the coffee pot, it's right there. I brew gallons of tea in it.

View on Reddit #49843696

AwkwardZac@reddit

Don't use it for coffee then. It's still great for boiling a pot of tea.
View on Reddit #49683709

GrandMasterEternal@reddit

Yeah but then just have an electric kettle
View on Reddit #49684315

AwkwardZac@reddit

But my coffee pot can also make coffee, if someone else wants to use it for that. Just wash it after if you have a problem with it. It's also easier to pour and clean in general.
View on Reddit #49684694

GrandMasterEternal@reddit

You're not cleaning your coffeemaker very well if you believe that's true. And no argument for owning a coffeemaker as someone who does not drink coffee will ever make sense.
View on Reddit #49685749

AwkwardZac@reddit

Cost: Walmart sells a coffee pot for 10 bucks, and their electric kettle is 20. It's cheaper as well as more useful.
View on Reddit #49686832

GrandMasterEternal@reddit

Actually, their cheapest electric kettle is 10. Why do you care enough about people buying the wrong appliance for their use to make bad faith arguments about it? It's also distinctly *less* useful on account of many, many unnecessary functions on a coffee maker that hinder any usage but the making of coffee. For example, the needless cycling of water through the back requires more cleaning (you don't clean these parts because you don't know what you're talking about; there's probably mold in the back parts of your coffee maker that you've never seen). The coffeemaker is also notably less energy efficient than an electric kettle, assuming it's the common type with a hotplate. A typical, cheap one also cannot be set to just boil the water and alert you as soon as its done, the most basic feature for any electric kettle.
View on Reddit #49687799

This is my thing, when I lived in thr states there was 0 reason to buy a kettle. I had a pot Now I have an Electric kettle because my GF wanted one
View on Reddit #49668999

OfficialHelpK@reddit

The advantage of an electric kettle is that it's much faster, especially in Europe for some electrical reason I don't understand. Though if you don't boil water on a regular basis, like for tea, I wouldn't say you need one.
View on Reddit #49678836

ikonfedera@reddit

European electricity is twice as potent. (just like european sperm). 120 volts vs 240 volts. That means twice as much energy in the cable, ergot 2x quicker boil. Sure it might kill you if you lick the power socket too much, but quicker tea is worth the risk apparently.
View on Reddit #49744974

Bubbaluke@reddit

Higher voltage electricity in Europe, makes more power with the same current
View on Reddit #49696708

Redmangc1@reddit

Takes 3-5 min pot or like 2 min for the e kettle. I eat oats on a regular basis, like a horse so I'm used to either. The only real advantage i find for the kettle is when I want 70c water i can easily reach that with a couple button presses

View on Reddit #49690192

I_am_Reptoid_King@reddit

A lot of it has to do with our electric grid. The US uses 120 volt @ 60hz. Europe uses 220 volt @50hz. Euro kettles boil water faster due to the higher voltage. Boiled water is boiled water.
View on Reddit #49676206

Water, 212f from a kettle 😋 Water, 212f from a microwave in a glass container 🤮 If anyone knows the difference in the end product you are welcome to explain it to me.
View on Reddit #49698302

Hyperversum@reddit

Because microwaves heat stuff unevenly, even water lmao. Yeah sure, being water it's not much of a big deal, but it's one more hassle to have. Including the removal of a cup from the microwave itself, which might be much hotter than intended and you end up with very hot water splashing inside it. You can do it, it's water, but there are reasons to use a kettle. "But muh it's very easy, how can you hurt yourself like that". Do I have to point out how common are household deaths and how many people costantly cut themselves open, kill kids or pets, fucking turn their house into a bomb due to gas left open and whatever else?
View on Reddit #49715652

Grand-Engineering831@reddit

I just microwaved water and poured it into a cup, it measured 199 after pouring. I did the same with my electric kettle and it measured 204 (used a meat thermometer so it's probably not entirely accurate) 6 degrees really doesn't seem like much of a difference. Gonna go with muh easy. If anyone burns themselves doing that basic task they deserve it
View on Reddit #49718140

Puzzleheaded-Box9197@reddit

It isn't, its just fun when different flags unite to mock another one for some stupid shit. I'd microwave my water if I liked tea and I'm euro, it's just more convenient.
