What is the UK metal detector etiquette when being helped to find something?

I have lost my late dad's signet ring, managed to track down a friendly metal detector man who is very happy to come over this afternoon and help me find it. I mentioned I was unbelievably grateful, and happy to pay for his time or a reward. He sort of brushed it off, and said he loves helping, and 'let's just try and find it first' I am British and therefore already getting myself in a tizz about what the right etiquette will be when he finds it/doesn't find it. Can anyone advise? Or do I need to rewatch detectorists? 🤔
