Oh interesting, thanks for the pic! I'm not sure stores here in MN have those, I think they're just old-school brown handle-less grocery bags. At least they were as recently as maybe a year ago which was probably the last time I bought one. I could be wrong, though... maybe they changed and I never noticed. But I've long switched to snagging a free box from the produce aisle, or from that big wire bin Aldi employees wheel around and chuck empty boxes into.

My mom had a refrigerator that never died. They bought it new in 1976 when we moved into the house I "grew up in". It was still in use in the garage as an overflow/second fridge when she passed in 2016. It went with the house when we settled the estate and sold the house. (New owner was into retro stuff.) It was bright yellow with lots of chrome lol. Gaudy as hell.

The kitchen had 9 foot ceilings and the walls were 4" metal tiles in a nice avocado green and shit brown checkerboard pattern! 🤢 It's been almost 40 years and I can still see that in my mind. That’s so cool! My items are many but if I had to choose just one, it’s the large copper bottom stainless steel pot that my great grandma used in her restaurant. My mom passed away a while ago so it’s been mine for many years, and I can honestly say it’s a magical pot. I don’t know if it’s the way it conducts hear or what, but food just always tastes great when cooked in it. The handles are thick ropes of steel that don’t get hot so you can grab them even after boiling a soup for hours. It’s truly a priceless item that I know cannot be replaced. It cleans so easily and always looks the same after all these years! It must be 100 years old, maybe older. But close. In a world where nothing is built to last anymore, I cherish these old ass items! Case in point - Does anyone have a washer dryer built in the past 15 years that hadn’t died or required a major repair? Ugh! They may be falling apart bit but my dad’s dishwasher, fridge, stove and oven are all 33 years old and still going. I can’t find a mini fridge to last more than a few years. As much as I could be tempted to have shiny new things, I’m wise enough to know that they really don’t make them like they used to. Keep till they die, save your money for fun and necessities.

Anything with a knob or a dial. Today adjusting volume on most things has a stupid delay and multiple button presses or holding a button down and waiting for it and still can’t be fine tuned. Same with something like changing a channel. It used to be instant, now you have to wait for it. In a car it is multiple steps on a touchscreen. I hate it so much.

A Red Ryder BB gun. The one I had as a kid was accurate and consistent. I could chop down a thick weed at 15-20 yards by shooting a horizontal line across it. I bought a couple of newer RR BB guns some years ago for entertainment while camping out in the woods. Somehow they put a spin on the BB that makes it curve in random directions. Looser tolerances on the barrel, I guess.

Yes, knives. My grandfather who was a month away from turning 99, passed away in December. He had 3 knives: butter knife, steak knife and pocket knife all older than me (I’m 46), and those were the only ones he used. Don’t even try to give him a different one. Anything else was useless!

Not childhood but I bought my TV in March, 1995 (Second month of an office job). Was some brand I'd never heard of but it was the cheapest one I could find with picture in picture. The brand is Bell + Howell which now does made for TV flashlights or security lights or something but turns out it was one of the first TV camera companies. Anyway, I gave it to a friend when I moved to Europe two years later. He gave it to my parents when he moved to Florida. My parents gave it back to me when I moved back to the US. I've been through 6 VCRs, 8 or 10 DVD players, and 5 universal remotes. At some point the government bought me a digital converter box for my antenna (I get 14 channels through the antenna.). And 30 years later I'm watching it right now.

My fridge is from 1988, still going strong. My dryer is over 30. Until 10 years ago, my washer also dated to the 80s. When it died, the guy the appliance repair company sent to look at it was not as old as it was. He had never seen anything like it and was marveling at how solidly it was built— even the serial number was stamped into a small metal tag that was riveted to the body, instead of just being a sticker. I had to replace it because it was so old they could not get the part it needed anymore, new or reconditioned. I bought the closest thing I could to what I had— a dumb, 100% mechanical top-loader from Speed Queen. Holding up okay so far.

The legacy microwave in my parents house still works. Came with faux wood panelling and had no turntable but will still heat up whatever you throw in it. One time when I was in highschool (so like over 20 years ago) the cafeteria microwave broke down and I donated this beast. No issues, kept going. Took it to university as well. That damn thing's magnetron must have been of a vintage used to detect incoming Luftwaffe air raids.

Swingline staplers! I'm a high school teacher. Every summer I stalk estate sales searching for those old, all-metal staplers. They are indestructible. There are several in my classroom. When I find one of these, I will give it to a new teacher who is too young to know what a REAL stapler is like. Panasonic electric pencil sharpeners from the 70s and 80s. Those things will not quit. My students make fun of mine because it has fake wood "paneling" on the sides, but they will walk to my room from across the building to use it because it works so much better than the cheap plastic sharpeners issued by the school.

My mother had a Rubbermaid garbage can that was so old it was actually made out rubber. I can never remember having another garbage can in the house growing up. When I left in the early 90’s it was still being used. That thing was indestructible. I’m sure it could still be used today.

I have a TriStar vacuum that I bought at a garage sale at some point off a guy who sold them door to door. It’s a bit heavy for a canister vacuum, but it is basically solid steel. I’ve replaced the 2 back wheels and had the cord replaced. When I went looking for a new cord I went to a vacuum repair shop and asked the guy if they could replace the cord. He mentioned using one in the shop to clean other vacuums and around the shop. The back wheels were just plastic, so I replaced them with polyurethane wheels.

My inherited 1953 Sunbeam T-20B. Use it several times a week. Makes better toast and only has needed the cord replaced. If you find one at a yard sale, buy it. Built like a tank.

I have a white plastic 8 qt Rubbermaid thing that looks like a giant measuring cup. It must be 40 yrs old and I still use it a couple times a week. It's great to pour out cake batter and mixing bread dough, whatever. My flour sifter is almost as old. I had to get a new box grater maybe 10 years ago. Still have some white with blue trim corning wear

Audio equipment. That is why audiophiles still chase the old stuff. Most clothing and shoes. Belts ftlog how you can screw up a piece of leather with holes in it I don't know but companies have. Mattresses. They are all crap now. It's insane. Honestly anything that was made by companies that took pride in their products in the before times.

I found one of those at a junk store on a trip and immediately snagged it. My daughter will be getting my iron skillets after I go. I got them from my mom and grandma. I have a turning fork(garden implement) that's a solid piece of steel that goes directly into a receiver for the handle. It's one solid piece of steel instead of having a 2" tab that goes into the handle. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to be in the middle of busting dirt and have a handle pop off because the tab has compressed the wood so much it won't stay attached. I think I paid less than ten dollars for it at a different antique/ junk store.

I’m still using my mom’s Sunbeam electric hand mixer from the 80s (or maybe even the late 70s). I’ll be so sad when/if it dies. To think my mom used it to make cakes when I was growing up and now I that’s how I use it too for my kids.

Yeahh I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of disagree? with you there on that can opener. The style that pushes apart the lid from the seam instead of cutting into the metal top is vastly superior, like this one. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000B6NXL6 Mostly because it never touches the food itself so never gets dirty and rusty.

I still use the can opener I took out of my mom’s kitchen when I left for college. I always use it. My wife has an electric can opener and some other kind of fancy hand can opener, but I use my old one every time I open a can.
