I'm so happy I don't live in a whirl of paranoia & privilege & bigotry like you.

Lived in India for several months, never spent more than $5 a night on accomodation, agreed to ride miles from city centres on the backs of motorbikes to stay with Indian families in homeshares, took trains in the cheapest carriages where you had to lie on top of strangers, slept in wooden huts on just straw mats, slept in high-rise blocks of tiny single room apartments with doors a toddler could punch through. Never had a single issue, never met another foreigner that had a single issue.I spent one night in a 5*, the night before my flight home, it was the most depressing and disappointed I had been in my whole time staying there, the food was worse than shacks at the side of the road, everyone looked miserable, the staff were treated like shit by management. Honestly only an absolute shit tier human would enjoy staying in "posh" Indian areas.

China is a beautiful country, with everything any traveller could ever want, mountains, beaches, rainforest, cities, street food, markets, fine dining, the locals are all very eager to help foreigners. I've only been for a few weeks, but again, absolutely zero worries staying in lower end areas.

I've not been to Brazil, but statistically it does seem like a dangerous place to visit in some isolated areas.

I did all this with several thousand dollars worth of camera gear on me at all times, and often using a surface book laptop and Google pixel phone. Absolutely zero issues.

Fwiw, the USA has 10 times higher homicide rate than china, India has around half the homicide rate of the USA. So if you didn't feel safe there, I dread to think how you feel every day in the USA. What a disappointing and sheltered life you must lead.
