recommend a CHEAP (very) e-bike?
Posted by OrangeHitch@reddit | ebikes | View on Reddit | 101 comments
I've never spent any time on this sub and don't know anything about e-bikes. But I need a recommendation.
I'm single & and live in the USA. The nearest city big enough for a WalMart is twenty miles away and I don't intend to use an e-bike to get there. My auto mechanic is five miles away and I need something that I can pull out of the back of my Subaru Outback when the car is being left overnight. I'd old, and although I'm healthy enough to walk home, I don't want to and it can be very hot in the Summer. I borrowed a 10 speed a couple of years ago and didn't get farther than a half mile before I was worn out. I'm not obese. I think it was a shitty and poorly maintained bike, but you can't take home a new bike for a day to see how it feels.
I'd like an e-bike that sells for $500 or less. It should be able to go at least 30 miles (real world) on a charge. I don't expect to use it more than two or three times a year. I don't care how it looks, it just needs to fit in my wagon. I don't think it needs to be foldable to fit. There's not a lot of traffic here, so it doesn't need to have top-flight equipment.
Craigslist has a folding Fiido D3 Pro for $150 that needs a speedometer. It lists for $599 new. I think I can do without the speedo, but it probably displays other functions that I need. I'd prefer a new e-bike so I know the condition, but is a used $150 bike a better choice than a cheap new bike?
I've skimmed through some of the recommendation threads and it looks like you folks are used to paying $2000 or more for your stuff so those weren't helpful. Can ya help a fella out here?

First question is always: service. I ordered two Blix bikes due to great reviews. Literally the worst experience I’ve had purchasing anything ever. Bikes get flats. They break down. How you gonna fix it? So, first, eliminate anything sold exclusively online without local service support. Most of these e-bike companies are headed up by knit-cap wearing lame-asses, or some version of a tech-bro lame ass. Fuck them.

The $500 new bikes I tried were all pretty questionable on range and build quality, but for occasional use they’ll get the job done.
coldcoffeeuwu@reddit
Gotrax 20″ Folding is a solid cheap option that’s easy to store in your Subaru and will handle occasional \~5-mile rides comfortably. If you want a bit more power and still keep it compact, the 750W Mini Folding gives extra pep while remaining affordable and practical.

I recommedn he goes for the used Fiido D3 Pro folding e‑bike at $150—as long as the battery still holds a decent charge, it’s way better value than any new sub-$500 e-bike, which will almost always have worse range and components. Just accept the gamble on battery health and plan for a possible replacement down the line, because that’s the one thing that can kill the deal.

those sub-$500 bikes are a total gamble. If you can push the budget a bit for something that actually feels solid ENGWE M20 is a beast. It's got that dual-battery setup that completely kills range anxiety you can easily get around 40-50 miles on throttle alone without breaking a sweat. Plus, the moped-style frame with fat tires handles rough patches way better than those flimsy city ebikes. Definitely worth it if you want something that won't fall apart after a month.

Yeah for occasional use those $500 bikes work fine. But if someone planning regular commutes or longer rides, going with something like ENGWE M20 makes more sense. Better range and build quality means you're not dealing with random issues every other week.
The budget ones are okay for errands but they start showing problems pretty quick if you actually rely on them daily.

How has this bike held up? In NYC Looking upgrade from a stand up e-scooter that I started taking to work due to issues with my knee and the stairs at the subway station. I used to take citibike but it doesn't have a full electric mode for the days when my knee is inflamed. My co-worker has a fully loaded version, I just need something simple that will hold up for years. I never want to take the train again. LOL

I've bought two of the XP Lites, zero problems. Both the first generation.

Lectric bikes SUCK! They sent me the bike with PAS not working. Took them a month to finally send someone out to fix it. Now my battery plate prongs bent because the damn bike all of a sudden is impossible to open and close to take the battery out to charge at work. It's the biggest pain in the ass ever and am never getting a folding bike again. They sent me a a new battery plate but the damn thing won't turn on! Worst ebike I've ever owned!

That is the best ebike that won't have a high chance of being a fire hazard (aside from some East Asian-specific last-mile ones that won't go anywhere close to 30 mi)... Save up, look for a decent used one, or don't buy one.

What do I need to check if I buy a used e-bike? Secure connections, no corrosion, tire tread, tires not bent, suspension working….is there anything else?

There are good ones for $500 like a really good ones on Amazon with warranties that go like 70 miles all electric
InsuranceLeft5584@reddit
VIVI ebike on amazon, it's 400$ goes 25 pretty sturdy. PROS: reliable if you aren't beating it up every day, great for casual use. CONS: heavy as hell, really bad battery life if you just full throttle, and breaks fade over time so they tightening.

I have a Heybike Racemax i bought off of amazon, think it was like $400 ish after shipping, i ride it 4 miles to and from work. Every single day, rain or shine and it hasn’t failed me yet. I know it’s not the best bike or the fastest but for $400 it has surely done me good the past 6 months and it doesn’t look like anything will stop me for another 6 or more!
Separate-Habit5838@reddit
It's funny to me that so many here claim you literally can't get anything that won't die in a fire for less than 1k, yet every person who has one of these cheap Heybike models seems perfectly happy...Reddit be weird like that.
That_Frame_964@reddit
Yeah that's the thing. See, I'm an MX / Dirt Bike rider. Have been for 30+ years. Put in hundreds of thousands of miles on trails. Anyway, for 1,000 bucks you can buy a 125cc pit bike that will do 40-50 miles (1 gallon tank) on your average 150lb rider, and reach speeds of around 40-45 mph in 4th gear.
Of course for commuters that doesn't work, but my point is, these a Chinese pit bikes. X-Pro, Mototec, etc that can be had for under 1k. Compared to the Yamaha, or Honda, that is 3-4x more for their bulletproof and reliable engines. And here's the thing, I have TW200, a TTR225, a CRF450R, and an X-Pro (the chinese junk, as people call it) 125. And yet the X-Pro is 3 years old now, has over 10,000 miles on it, and all that I had to do was initially loctite the bolts and secure everything, and basic maintenance after. It starts up 2nd or 3rd kick, EVERY TIME even now. Even in the cold, 0 degree weather, 3rd kick.
The usual things have broken on it that break on my reputable bikes, but nothing dramatic and parts are dirt cheap if they do (pun intended).....
My point is, people call my little X-Pro junk all the time, and make jokes about it being made of "Chinesium" and yet, here we are, 10k miles later. I actually enjoy it more than my bigger bikes sometimes. It's so much more nimble and fun.
And here I am, listening to the same BS that is plagued on the dirt bike reddits... "DON'T BUY CHINESE DIRT BIKES! THEY'LL BREAK!! THEY'LL BLOW UP!!" the list goes on and on, and a lot of you are just doing the exact same thing I've been reading for years.
And here I am, with a crappy 300 dollar EBike made in China, and guess what I do for a living? I work in a Lithium battery production facility. Yes, we make batteries, and I've torn these cheap Chinese batteries apart. Some of them consist of cheap materials, but they are in not more likely to blow up or catch fire, because they're "Chinese" junk. Hell I just ripped apart a Carbo battery a few weeks ago which looked like it was put together in some sweat shop by a 10 year old. That battery failed and the reason was because the balance leads were COLD soldered on there and cracked. Awful job. So some of these expensive 2k plus bikes are made with junk too.
Silver-Confection-28@reddit
Just saw your post and I couldn’t agree more. When I first got into mountain biking about 25 years ago, I started out on a Pacific bike my wife bought me for Christmas. I had no idea what I was doing but was having a blast. Yes, that bike wore out pretty fast and I moved up in quality with a used bike and then I bought my first “real” mountain bike, an entry level Gary Fisher Advance for about $350 or so, loved that bike. When I wore that one out, I went shopping and found a Diamondback Overdrive 29er for $550 on Amazon. That bike actually had good ratings from reputable websites and it was a fantastic bike. Now, I’m in the e-bike world due to severe back and hip issues, had a Rad Rover 5 that I just sold today (another great bike) and looking for a fat tire step thru for under $800. Anyways, thanks for the info in your post, very helpful.
Spergtism@reddit
what ebike do you have?
DarkVoid42@reddit
let me tell you about my experience buying 2 x $1000 ebikes. they were CHEAP ebikes, chinese specials.
i rode them enthusiastically for a week. then i noticed rust on the chain. then the speed sensor broke. then the little plastic clip for the headlight came off. no biggie right ? then the small pin for the charger became wobbly. then the pedal on one broke. then one started to refuse charging without sticking the charger pin with duct tape to the battery. then the battery lock latch broke. the one started having bulging batteries. so i removed the pack and tossed it intending a replacement. in the month it took to get a replacement the motor had seized up. then the other one had the seat rip. no biggie, i'll just swap the seat from the non working one. then the charger plug went out completely. then i needed both for my wife to ride with me. so we had to take an uber. thats when both got shelved. after 3 months i was down to zero ebikes. now i have 4 carbo model Xs. and im happy. not one has broken down after 4 years of hard use.
so here is an ebike which will work once for you and stop working - https://ridejetson.com/products/bolt-electric-bike
or you can buy quality and end up using it for more than just going to the mechanic and back - https://ridecarbo.com/products/carbo-model-x
the choice is yours.
OrangeHitch@reddit (OP)
I appreciate your reply. I was afraid a cheap bike would have these kinds of problems. The sites that review e-bikes only have them for a few hours and generally say good things about everything because they need manufacturers to keep sending stuff.
The Carbo is nice, but $2700 is too much for something I'll only use a few times a year. There is nowhere to go around here, so I wouldn't use it for anything more. If I wanted exercise I'd get an ordinary bicycle and if I go out to shop once a week, I need a car.
UltrasoneGG@reddit
A few things to consider:
Since you only need transportation a few times a year, Uber/Lyft might be cheaper than a bike. You only miss out on biking experience.
There are quite a few budget friendly brands that sell decent quality bikes that are not generic Chinese dropship: Lectric, Aventon, Rad Power, Ride1up, Velotric… You get much better selections at $1000+
You get what you pay for: Cheap Ebike battery alone costs $200+. You can’t get any good and cheap bikes at $500 price point. Have you considered a standard bike that’s not electric?
Buying used bikes locally can save you a lot of money, especially if you have a low budget. You don’t need a $2600 bike, but $500 bikes aren’t designed to last.
There are many posts similar to yours, and I was in the same position not too long ago.
OrangeHitch@reddit (OP)
I live in the country. There is no Uber/Lyft. I recognize that a $500 e-bike is bottom-end, but figured that it would be good for limited use. I'll look around at those brands you mentioned.
I'm 70 years old and maybe 180 pounds. As I said in my original post, I thought I was in decent shape but back about seven years ago I needed to get to the auto parts store for a new starter. I could only get a 1/2 mile on fairly flat ground with a ten-speed before I was worn out. It was an old bike that sat outside under an awning and I don't think it was a name brand like Schwinn, so maybe it was just a junk bike. But bike shops (or Craigslist sellers) don't let you take a bike for a day to get a feel for it. I'm only getting older and I don't think a regular bike is for me. There's nothing but cows near me and I won't be riding for exercise. The e-bikes on Craiglist are generally over $1000 and are at least 65 miles away, so it's hard to check several out on the same trip.
No_Property_2551@reddit

Lazy_athlete50@reddit
I picked up a used e-bike when I wasn’t sure how often I’d really ride, and for what you’re describing that $150 Fiido is honestly worth a serious look. The range claim on budget bikes is usually optimistic, but for a five-mile ride a couple times a year it’ll be plenty.
CashEquity@reddit
I bought a used folding e-bike off Craigslist for a couple hundred bucks and it did the job fine. The battery didn’t hold full capacity anymore, but even at half strength it still went farther than I ever needed. For the price, I couldn’t complain.
Commercial_Line_4956@reddit
This was posted recently, someone was looking at cheap options for city rides with potholes which might be worth a look.
They leaned toward picking up a used bike nearby and focusing on battery health and brake condition instead of chasing high watt numbers.
Due-Trip-2822@reddit
I was in a similar spot trying to find something cheap just to cover short distances when my car was in the shop. The truth is you won’t get a brand-new e-bike under $500 that can reliably do 30 real miles on a charge. The batteries alone for that kind of range usually cost close to your whole budget.
Fancy_Chart_848@reddit
When I needed a super cheap option I grabbed a used Lectric XP Lite off Facebook Marketplace for about $350 and it’s still kicking.

i’m ngl $500 or less isn’t really gonna get you a good, fully functioning e-bike that won’t die on you halfway through a ride. Most bikes in that price range cut corners somewhere, either the motor’s underpowered, the battery degrades fast, or the frame feels like it was held together with duct tape. And tbh used bikes off craigslist can be a gamble too. The speedo might not seem like a big deal now, but that display usually controls assist modes, battery stats, and diagnostics. Plus, you never really know what kind of wear the battery or motor has gone through. The cheapest full featured option i could find for you is this luckeep one. it’s still over your budget, but my advice would be to prioritise getting smth that would save you from buying something that ends up collecting dust after two rides lol.

Consider an Ancheer Ebike https://www.ancheer.shop/ or a Nakto https://nakto.com
Basic but the bicycle parts are mostly standard. Someone at my old workplace rode to work on a Nakto ”Camel” model step-through, daily for a year in all weathers, until it got very grimy and parts broke, then she bought another same model she rode for another year, but she was putting heavy use on the bike. Go in with low expectations, perform routine maintenance, and you might not be disappointed. At least the Ancheer equivalent “Swan” model has a slightly improved spec with disk brakes, her Nakto “camel“ model had a front rim brake but a band brake on the rear.
If electrical safety is something you want, consider a Walmart Hyper or Huffy brand Ebike, they’re UL 2849 certified

It's hard to find a new regular bike for $500. Anything with disc brakes from a reputable brand will be higher than that. Any ebike at that price will be dangerous to you, dangerous to charge, and unlikely to last more than a couple rides.
A $1000 Velotric would be a decent way to go. A used name brand that's a couple years old might also be available in the sub$1000 zone, and a way better investment than new junk.

I bought a Heybike Race Max last December for $480 with tax & free delivery. I ordered through WalMart but it came direct from Heybike. I don't have an issue with Bezos and Amazon had the same deal, but WalMart is more convenient if there had been a problem with the bike.
I've haven't ridden the bike more than a mile or two. It was purchased specifically so that I could get back and forth to my mechanic when the car is in the shop for maintenance. I live in the country and there are no taxis or rideshares.

I just got the drift Slide 1500 w I love it. I just came from a 30 mile ride. I used the level 1 assistance which is the lowest of the 1-5
It goes up to 28 Mph but with a few toggles on the speedometer screen you can remove the limitation
I had it up to 40Mph. Peddling but still and it was smooth
I haven’t tried the sand yet but it handles well off road There is a bracket for a second battery
My only downfall with this bike is the inability to find a good cargo rack that would fit on here I have a bag that I found, but I would like to hold some more stuff in here like my drone and extra batteries
I also loaded it up with a small bike pump little first aid kit a back up battery I also bought a screen rearview mirror And with the back up battery, I charge the screen rearview mirror, the small bike pump, and my phone I don’t have to disconnect any of it when I charge the battery. I also charged the portable battery.
I am very happy with this purchase, this is my first E bike and good luck finding one that suits your needs

Imo it's not worth it if you're only using it 10 times per year or less. (My personal threshold would probably be like twice a month or more for it to be worth it, but hard to give an exact number.)
If your goal is to get from the shop to your home without your car a handful of times a year, try Uber/Lyft, ask if your mechanic has a shuttle/ride service, carpool with someone, borrow a neighbor's car.
instaG_Varsy_X_Art@reddit

If you can't ride a bike a half mile you have no chance of riding an ebikes 30 miles.

Man!! I want that driftside im J1 bike, but cant find threads on it and i dont trust ratings/reviews much. Id rather communicate with a real owner. Negative reviews i have read are all around customern service not the bikes design or funtion. Everything seems a plus but if you have problems. 1. Nice frame Steel for easy weld repairs that may be needed from accidents or very high use fatigue. Ive had a aluminum become a parts donor after a accident over a simple huge crack at tripple tree hole. 2300.00 bike wemt to shit because aluminum. 2. Frame designed to take the most popular compettive priced parts for service and upgrades.20 ah samsung batteries for under 250.00 and all other parts are simmilar in value because they are all used by most bike manufacturers. NOTE! BIKES WITH IN HOUSE PROPRIETARY PARTS ARE UNFAIRLY MARKED UP. LIKE BATTERIES FOR INSTANCE. The Drift slides samsung batteries just over 200.00 to 350 for twice the a.h. of anyones batteries. Hi end bikes lock you in to buying their designed batteries for 4 to 700 bucks and when they stop making them and case is damaged you are left to make mods of give up on the bike.
So!! I just wish i could get a know good working one and after warranty is up as it fails replace parts with aftermarket well compettitivly priced parts.
I cant even Seem to get a emeil from them answered and if they did and convined me id get a good.bike i would actually buy two! The cost of less than one more expensive bike and id have two in the style i want.

I recommend the Vivi Electric Bike 26″ x 4.0 Fat Tire. It offers a solid range of 30-40 miles, which meets your requirement, and the 500W motor provides enough power for moderate hills. The fat tires also make it more comfortable and stable, especially if you occasionally ride on rough or uneven surfaces. While it’s a bit bulkier, it’s perfect for your needs and fits within your budget.

OrangeHitch@reddit (OP)
Sorry for the late reply, I was waiting for a ban to pass. I rarely use the the bike. I live out in the country and bought it to get back and forth to my mechanic who is ten miles away. It was fairly easy to put together and has help up fine. Both Amazon & Walmart had it for the same price so I bought it from Walmart because their delivery is usually better and it would be easier to return. It was actually shipped from Heybike. It was shipped a week late and that fell into the xmas delivery season. It was on the truck every morning for three weeks but each day it went back to the warehouse undelivered. By the time it was delivered and built it was January, and that's our cold season. Then comes rainy season until mid-April. So I've barely ridden it.

Has anyone used the drift slide e bike that's all over now? $650 but I'm hesitant at that price.

I have not. But I did buy a Heybike RaceMax in December for $450 and it has served me well. I see no need to spend more unless you need it to get to work every day.
