The major risk has always been rising water levels and devastating storms damaging military infrastructure. Next time a navy base gets wiped out because someone thought preparing for the inevitable was “woke”, remember this.
Nazirul_Takashi@reddit
It's not our fault for not preparing our navy base from sinking! It's the DEI Woke Globalist Jews and their weather controling space lasers that sunk our base! /s

Yeah, I've got an issue here, wasn't Elon supposed to be one of the Lizard people? Truly curious how they spinned that around.

The people in power are well aware that climate change and industrial collapse are real. But they're realists. They know the path were heading down and are playing the game to ensure they end up gaining the most as things fall apart.
Years ago I myself began to wonder if there's really any value in everyone understanding the true nature of climate change. Look at this sub as an example. Years ago many people where were able to reflect on the natural of a collapsing world with introspection, but that's clearly not how the average person deals with it.
People in this sub have increasingly just resorted to panic, which leads to plenty of dangerous action on it's own. As climate change becomes more and more obvious and it becomes more and more clear that we're on the path we're on, the data doesn't matter any more. People aren't going to be convinced, they are going to lose their minds.
Texuk1@reddit
I get where you are coming from but I’m always a bit skeptical of this idea of the powerful “in the know” people. I would say that as power and status increase there is more psychological pressure not to be aware of things because there is just not enough time in a busy persons life to really look too hard at existential questions. I mean maybe there are few people on certain subcommittees of congress who put two and two together or an extremely wealthy person who might have an interest but people in actual positions of power are mostly caught up in trying to manage the sheer complexity of modern human existence. They arnt omniscient deities who can see everything that’s coming and because of their position they are unlikely to take a view similar to this sub in my view. Sure maybe some uber wealthy people get sold bunkers but it’s not because they actually know anything more than any of us. I think it’s better to face up to knowing that there isn’t anyone “in the know” and that wealthy and powerful people don’t have some master plan.
SecretPassage1@reddit
pfff, honestly, where is that coming from? In France there's over 80% awareness of climate chaos, and a growing portion of them are aware of collapse looming closer (mainly when their homes get hit or destroyed by insane weather, but also because they are educated enough to add things up)
Texuk1@reddit
It’s ok, welcome discussion! What I mean I guess is the culture of capitalism in America and it’s education system people at the top of the power structure organise their lives in a way which precludes deep awareness of ecological issues - in this way they don’t have “the time” to really get into such that they are sort of fully aware. I guess I meant time as a relative concept rather than being actual free time. There is, in my view based on the way children to be highly are raised in the states compared with France (individualistic and success orientated), rampant psychopathy and narcissism and most of these people are just simply trying to navigate the economic game in front of them before someone else takes their pie. In this environment the future of society and the bigger picture sort of dissolve away.
weirdrevolution11@reddit
I don’t disagree I’m just wondering if this was supposed to be in response to what I said? I said the threat is real. The largest threat is to the trillions of dollars the US spends on military bases that are strategically and specifically, on the ocean. There will be more hurricanes and massive storms that will make it impossible to hold these territories.
f1shtac000s@reddit
The US military is not afraid of losing money to win a war. Each Patriot missile fired (which is way outdated technology) costs way more that a high end Ferrari.
This is something a lot of people don't really internalize. Modern warfare is immensely destructive of wealth. Imagine a hand gun where each bullet fired was worth an diamond engagement ring. For the average individual this sound ludicrous, why would you ever fire such a weapon!?! But that's how the military operates. So building bases that may be useful but are ultimately going to be destroyed by nature is really nothing of concern.

Since 1950, sea levels in Annapolis have risen by 10 inches.
Since 1929, sea levels have risen by 1.06 feet.
By 2045, sea levels are projected to rise by about a foot, which could lead to 360 days of flooding in Annapolis

We need a military coup to overthrow this tyrant and restore democracy. Everyone in the military is sworn to defend the constitution from threats both foreign and domestic. Donald Trump is a clear domestic threat.
weirdrevolution11@reddit
But where does that leave the US? Several weeks ago it was a functioning government. Now the rest of the world is looking at you all sideways. Who gets put in charge? Do you just throw some other candidates out there all of a sudden and expect the conspiracy minded, severely divided proletariat to just roll with it?

Mr_McShitty_Esq@reddit
Could care less what they say. It's what they do that matters. While they'll remove text from websites, they would be drop dead stupid to ignore the threat of CC to American security.
mountainsunsnow@reddit
They are doing all this because they get the briefings on how significant climate disruptions are about to become on a global scale. So much of what they’re doing makes sense if you assume that the people in power know what we know and are doing a smash and grab while keeping the willfully ignorant in their fantasy land. If what we here talk about every day were understood by a critical mass of the population, angry chaos would erupt.
Trump aside, a lot of these “leaders” aren’t dumb, they’re just greedy. Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos, and the architects of P2025 are shrewd and intelligent. They got where they are on the backs of scientists and engineers. They know what is coming.
kylerae@reddit
Yup! One of my best friends was the chief of staff for a senator. They quit last year partially because of the information they received about a potential Trump presidency, but a significant portion of the reason they quit was because of the briefings they were a part of regarding Climate Change and the Biosphere collapse. They are thoroughly convinced we only have between 10-20 years before things get really bad (and keep in mind this was without the second Trump presidency). So my friend quit, saved up money, is working as a bar tender, and is just enjoying life because they don't want to look back when the world is falling down around them and realize they were working 90 hour weeks and never enjoyed life and the nature around them.
SecretPassage1@reddit
hmmm ... maybe that's how we got there so fast? Climate quitters? They leave only deniers to run the show.
Not blaming them, I did the same, in a way.
Pantsy-@reddit
Very accurate. Every significant study on military threat assessments put climate change at the top. The military spent millions on these studies but the will to act on the findings was barely there. That said, there’s a vast difference between what people know and their willingness to go with gut feelings, escapist fantasies and scapegoating.
I’m appalled at how many dumbasses I know personally don’t accept basic germ theory anymore.
Apparently immigrants are our newest boogeyman scapegoat. Unfortunately half of the US, or what’s left of it is about to become climate immigrants/ refugees; in addition to other unpredictable causes of societal destabilization.
mediandude@reddit
Representative democracy is about the corporate elite setting up an arbitrage for elections that becomes the dilemma for the voters.
Such a dilemma is by design, elections can fall either way, while the corporate elite always wins something.
The majorities of citizenry are for stopping AGW with a carbon tax + citizen dividends + WTO border adjustment tariffs in almost all OECD countries. Nordhaus's and James Hansen's carbon tax & dividend. Most economists and most climate scientists support that combination.
The majorities of citizenry in almost all EU countries are also against mass immigration from 3rd countries.
But none of the parties of OECD countries support such a combination. None.
The crosstabulation of scientific and public positions against that of the parties suggests an arbitrage (a dilemma for voters) at higher than 6-sigma statistical significance (with chi-square test or similar) to systematically avert democracy at an industrial scale. Such a situation could not have emerged in democracies. And that is especially evident in avoiding referendums on such (or on any) issues.
Representative democracy is an oxymoron.
The only viable way out is to have Swiss style optional referenda unhindered by the goodwill of politicians.

I'm convinced global warming and climate change are what are driving him and his goons toward trying to take over those lands.
Another degree or two in warming and midwestern crops start failing. He needs to own Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba to feed his MAGA supporters.
merchantofwares@reddit
Unfortunately this has to be correct.
Regardless of your take on the timeline of collapse or climate change, one thing is absolutely certain. It’s in the government’s interest to keep the most shocking info away from the public, Democrats did this by ensuring it’s watered down, Republicans are now resorting to spreading denial conspiracies to muddy the discussion.
Seraph199@reddit
Oh by the way he ALSO wants Canada and Greenland.
Out of left field craziness? Or...
A land grab knowing that the frozen tundras are "worth little" now economically but likely to be some of the only hospitable land if the climate does shift significantly.
Logical-Race8871@reddit
It doesn't work that way. This is one of the weirdest falsehoods floating around climate change.
You can't just take dirt out of the million-year freezer and have it be good to go. It's not even soil. It's just lifeless dirt.
You will, however, get immediate and massive erosion and toxic emissions of methane, iron oxides, toxic algal and bacterial blooms, and everything that's been geologically stabilized for millions of years.
Maybe in a few hundred years or a thousand years you'd get the first foot or two of slightly arable soil and soil ecology, but before that you're better off farming in the Sahara.
f1shtac000s@reddit
Exactly.
Additionally as the Arctic melts and becomes more hospitable people have to realize that Canada becomes Russia's neighbor as much as the US is today.
I can't stand MAGA, but Trumps actions are the rational actions of an oligarch who is working with other oligarchs that realize were in the end game of civilization and the rules for power and international relations are going to be changing daily.
Trump wants Greenland and Canada because those will soon be the new border between the US and Russia. Canadians are so against this policy because they still believe we live in a world that has long passed. There was a time where their security was implicitly guaranteed due to their proximity to the US, but on the path we're on they will end up the equivalent of Ukraine separating Russia from Europe.
Texuk1@reddit
I don’t know … there is thread on this post around the idea that the wealthy have master plans, I don’t think Cheetoh has any actual master plan. I think he read a few CIA briefings and went for some low hanging political fruit saber rattling an island that the US already has a strategic presence on and which it could easily annex without any war.
I just think we are giving this administration too much credit.
f1shtac000s@reddit
I don't think Cheetoh or Musk are smarter than us, but they have access to information and see the world quite differently. They are people who are focused on getting what they want and aren't deluded by ideologies. They don't have a master plan but the game they are playing is quite different from the one you and I play to survive.
Just as an analogy: my household is > top 5% income. I don't really care about the cost of eggs, it's a philosophical thing. Inflation hasn't impacted me at all in the last decade because... I don't even know what my grocery bill is. Statistically thinking you see the world quite differently and make different decisions about how to life your life (well assuming my assumptions are true, but if not you some other redditor reading this). I know this is true because in my life I've been in basically every income quantile outside of mega wealth, I've lived off of minimum wages and had a > $4000 dinner.
The same logic applies to Trump, Putin and Musk. If you have national GDPs at your disposal, you just have a different view of the world, different information and different priorities, different decisions.
Socialimbad1991@reddit
That's a level of foresight I don't actually think they possess. Spoiler alert: both those places have oil
Late_Again68@reddit
It has to be oil and minerals, because you can't plant crops in melted permafrost.
a_dance_with_fire@reddit
It’ll also be a challenge just to build anything due to the melting permafrost. The freeze / thaw cycles makes the ground unstable, leading to potential foundation failures, differential settlement, and other issues causing structural damage to buildings and infrastructure.
This doesn’t even touch on other issues, like how to get materials there in the first place or the potential for unknown voids if there was a pocket of ice that thawed out.
MariaValkyrie@reddit
The humidity will get worse long before the arctic regions become uninhabitable due to the heat.

BlonkBus@reddit
If folks can de-humanize others by reducing them to a heuristic represented by a single word, it makes it easier for those with some set of morals to begin with, to place their target as an exemption to those morals in their mind in order to live with assaulting that target. That was done purposefully, and necessarily, in the military as part of being indoctrinated (jeeze, I even defaulted to 'target') to enable the non-sociopaths to get the job done. Here, it's about priming citizenry to commit atrocity while feeling they are even defending their values. And it works. Over and over again, it works.

f1shtac000s@reddit
What you're seeing is an emergent property of collapse, not it's cause. When I first became collapse aware over a decade ago I quickly realized we would be in pretty much exactly this place.
If you really understand collapse, you'll also realize that Trump actions, like it or not, are quite rational (and believe me I'm no MAGA). We're entering the end game of civilization and the people at the top are well aware of this and playing to be the last one standing as things fall apart.
lchawks13@reddit
And i mean, isn't this what we want - a quick collapse so earth has a better chance ?
f1shtac000s@reddit
I wish this comment wasn't down voted. This is Derrick Jensen's thesis: the faster collapse happens, the less the total damage it causes will be.
There was a time when this opinion would have been discussed rationally on this sub, unfortunately it has been taken over by people who immediately rush to an emotional response to collapse.
Personally I think Jensen is correct, and it's a shame it's not considered a valid view point here.
kylerae@reddit
I think it can tend to be hard, because the people we all absolutely are disgusted with also want some kind of accelerationism. Whether it be the tech bros wanting to start their new tech oligarchies or the evangelicals believing it will bring the second coming of Christ. It can be hard to acknowledge a part of you might agree with the accelerationist idea as well.
For those of us here it is a perfect example of the Trolley Problem. Do we collapse quicker so we can potentially save as much of life the on earth, even though it will likely mean immense suffering for the human race, especially those who least deserve it. Or do we delay and hope we find a new solution or get more of the human race to an enlightened state so maybe we can ease the suffering of those around us. I honestly go back and forth often on how I feel. Somedays I just want it all to burn down, but other days I wonder if that is the right path forward.
lchawks13@reddit

Maybe the great filter is representation itself -- the ability to live inside a fake world made of language until the lies and unreality turn into catastrophic and very real consequences. Trump totally echoes the Martin Sheen president in The Dead Zone, for example, if anyone remembers that movie.
AnderUrmor@reddit
I'm just convinced that there's a critical mass to human civilization where when it crosses certain population, economic, political and technological thresholds, it is doomed to collapse.
I truly do believe that our species manages better in the long run in smaller communities, with aspects that are far more tied to hunter-gatherer tribes or indigenous groups.

Why not revolution? I remember at the start of the pandemic, people showed up armed because they were told to stay indoors for a bit.
Now, as the US president sets himself up to be a dictator and his right hand man gives Nazi salutes people are like "oh well 🤷♂️". Then you go to r/leopardsatemyface and you see stories of conservative voters who thought it wouldn't effect them now out of their cushy government jobs.
f1shtac000s@reddit
What's your plan to salvage industrial society at this point? Any serious solution that might have a chance to fix things is going to make the Great Leap Forward look like a pleasant stroll in the park.
Additionally revolutions need ideological infrastructure to actually lead to something on the other end. Being mad on reddit is not a successful foundation for overthrowing the current world order.
kylerae@reddit
Plus historically for a revolution to even have a chance you need to have approximately 30% of the population on board. That means 30% willing to risk their lives for the cause. That would be over 100 million Americans willing to do that. I really don't think we would be able to get those type of numbers together.
ChemsAndCutthroats@reddit
I mean, if you look at all the things we enjoy now. Things like 40 hrs work week, child labor laws, safety standards, civil rights, and workers rights. They were all fought for often times violently. Look at Battle of Blair Mountain and the American Coal wars of late 1800's and early 1900's. All fought for. Even The New Deal was a response because public anger was nearing revolt levels. The New Deal wasn't popular among the wealthy either. There was an attempt to install a more facist and pro business government. We really do need a Green New Deal to avoid going full facist tech oligarchy government. The world may be falling apart but I still want to keep my rights.
f1shtac000s@reddit
I don't know anyone who works a "40 hrs work week", everyone I know with a job making over 6 figures is working nights and weekends to survive and I work with people all over the planet.
All those things you are discussing, the are the result of excess resources, of brief times in human history when there is more than we need. They too are emergent phenomena. The New Deal happened because the US was suddenly a rising super power with more money than it knew what to do with.
We have left that world. The global economy is shrinking and pain is inflicted from the bottom up whether you like it or not. "Your rights" only exist when there is a surplus (and even the "your rights" have always come at the cost of someone far away paying for them).
IdolandReflection@reddit
Growth is only slightly lower than inflation. Higher taxes on the wealthy would solve inflation and many other problems.

I'm related to someone who is pro-Trump and he says shit like "when God decides it's my time to go, it's my time to go".

I think "almost" is doing more work there than you think. The last government also resigned us to our deaths, and the one before that as well. But not just the government, the fundamental nature of modern society. But you're upset because they're taking down the "hang in there!" kitty poster?
It is hard to accept collapse, but these actions do literally nothing to change the path we're on. There is literally nothing to be upset about if you accept the reality we are in, and once you do, it's a bit refreshing that we don't have to "play pretend" about meaningless climate policies.
Biden pushed us harder towards environmental catastrophe than Trump has (so far, I'm sure he'll come out ahead), but so many didn't care because he wrote the word "Green" on a lot of documents.
SlyestTrash@reddit
I'd say the deaths of billions of people including ourself is plenty to be upset about.

"the pentagon shoudln't be worrying about climate change.....maybe thats why we haven't won a war since the 40's "
That's a really dumb take.
Climate change affects the facts on the ground. For instance, it's opening up new trade route possibilities in the near future in the Arctic, where Russia, Europe, China, Canada, and the U.S. are all jockeying for power. That's one of the reasons Trump is talking about Greenland, ffs.
The Arctic is going to be one of the next theaters of war when global war breaks out next.
But you think the Pentagon should ignore it? GTFO.

The Pentagon should be worrying about climate change, as it's one of the most probable drivers of (near) future wars.

It’s over.
Elon & his tech bros literally stole secrets of the national nuclear defence network; they are probably in the hands of Russia &/or China as of last week or so.
They (meaning fascist globalist oligarchs, let’s not mince words) have not only literally every conceivable administrative branch of US gov’t by the balls, but the very people at this point.
Expect Trump’s America to resemble the fundamentalist hellhole that is Putin’s Russia more & more as the months wear on, & for other previously democratic nations to capitulate to rightwing authoritarianism worldwide in the coming years.
America’s greatest export going forward will be brainrot - or else! >:(
China is somewhat more rational on climate change as a threat, but how can you remain rational when everyone else begins acting erratically?
Where’s the incentive?
They too will either fall in line, buy the lie, or face many means of destruction.
The coming war will be one of ideology, make no mistake; it will be bend the knee to billionaire interests, or have them knocked out from beneath you, mob style.
And with that question hanging in the air, let’s bring back that point I opened with: if classified information about nuclear armaments is no longer secret, well, I’ll just say this - it’s a two way street, & MAD only works if the first portion of that phrase stays true…

This is what you need to be preparing for:
“Crack-Up Capitalism”: Historian Quinn Slobodian on Trump, Musk & the Movement to “Shatter” the State | Democracy Now!
"So, one of the problems of the administrative state is that it has been pursuing equality, and it’s been working under the false assumption that all humans are somehow equal, that in fact there are kind of hierarchies of intelligence, best measured in IQ, which people like Yarvin and increasingly Vance and Trump are seemingly quite obsessed with. It can be measured in things like race — group differences in IQ are, you know, commonly assumed to be real empirical facts in the world of the sort of Silicon Valley right — and, perhaps most importantly, into hierarchies of gender. So, the masculinity component in all of this is kind of impossible to overstate. There is a reason why the sort of apparent scrambling of gender in gender queer and trans movements is so triggering and so terrifying to people in this world. Elon Musk has described the “woke mind virus” as having killed his child, even though his child is very much alive.
So, the project, I think, is really about how, through the mechanisms of the market and the dismantlement of the sort of post-New Deal state, the post-Great Society and civil rights state, we can get back to what they see as a more natural world where men are in charge, white people are in charge, and there is a kind of restoration of the natural order of things. And that sort of wishy-washy treatment of things like slavery is sort of a provocative way of reopening those questions."
