Is dr. Pepper really that good?
Posted by funkynotorious@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 298 comments
I have recently started watching a lot of American streamers and they all seem to have cartons of dr. Pepper. I am pretty sure they are not sponsored.
Also stop killing doctors for dr. Pepper
tygramynt@reddit
If i still drank caffeine i would be drinking dr pepper zero its the best
C4dfael@reddit
Honestly, yes, it’s a tasty soda.
Also, fwiw, they haven’t used real doctors in Dr. Pepper since the 70s, when company scientists developed an artificial doctor flavoring.
Ok-Rate-3256@reddit
Its the only pop to drink with captain morgan. Its the right flavor for it.
Ok-Rate-3256@reddit
Its not bad and it is unique
drlsoccer08@reddit
I'm not a big soda guy, but as far as soda goes it's probably one of my favorites. I definitely wouldn't say that a few streamers are at all representative of the American population though.
funkynotorious@reddit (OP)
Is it less sweet than coke?
47-30-23N_122-0-22W@reddit
Same sweetness. More complex. It uses 23 different flavors. Created by an old timey pharmacist who liked the smell of pharmacies
No-Season-1860@reddit
I personally find Dr P to be sweeter than both Coke and Pepsi, moreover I would say that it naturally tastes more like Cherry Coke than regular. They also sell Cherry DR P, but also imo that just makes it taste a little sweeter. But thats just me.
stevenwright83ct0@reddit
Coke is very dry meh. Dr. Pepper perks up the taste buds
badandbolshie@reddit
coke is the least outright sweet of all major american sodas imo.
timdr18@reddit
If you sat down and tasted coke like you would at a wine tasting or something, you’d be astounded at how much more is going on in coke than just the sweetness.
fasterthanfood@reddit
Agreed. Coke has an acidity that counteracts the sweet flavor. None of the other major sodas (including Pepsi) have that same “bite.”
baalroo@reddit
It's about the same, but much more complex with notes of fruity flavors and warmer spices that you won't get with Coke or Pepsi.
Think something along the lines of red wine vs mulled wine and you're on the right track for Coke vs Dr. Pepper.
HidingInTrees2245@reddit
I think it's sweeter than coke.
WingedLady@reddit
More flavorful. Its creator was trying to make it taste like the smell of an old school soda fountain/drug store, if that makes sense. It's complex and none of the off label brands ever seem to get it right so you basically have to get the original if you like the flavor.
drlsoccer08@reddit
The sweetness is about the same.
No-Season-1860@reddit
Coke is still the number one soda by sales in the US but Dr. P did beat out Pepsi recently for the number 2 spot so it is at least in the conversation for sure.
NateLPonYT@reddit
Yea it’s pretty good
Express_Barnacle_174@reddit
Dr Pepper fans like it. To me it’s a weird cloying cola/sort of cherry-ish flavor that I’m not a fan of.
DOMSdeluise@reddit
it's alright. It's never been my favorite but it's nice sometimes. I stopped drinking soda like 15 years ago though and now it all tastes way too sweet for me.
Perdendosi@reddit
And you're from Texas? Heretic!
DOMSdeluise@reddit
I don't like sweet or iced tea either 😈😈😈
Muderous_Teapot548@reddit
Hey, I don't like sweet tea, either, but you bet your pit bbq brisket I love Dr. Pepper.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
I use Dr P for smoking ribs and pork butt, sometimes.
Muderous_Teapot548@reddit
I gotta try this.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Slow cooker barbacoa too.
Maxxonry_Prime@reddit
You just changed your flair to say Texas, didn't you? You're not actually from here.

I_am_photo@reddit
Same! Was so annoying going to anything since most of the time the options are sweet or iced tea. Lukewarm water.

cdb03b@reddit
Blasphemer!!!!
Disastrous-Mess-7236@reddit
I just never liked carbonation in the 1st place.
Ballmaster9002@reddit
I'd say the biggest thing Dr. Pepper has going for it is being 'different'. You have your colas, you have your clear-ish lemon/lime sodas, you have orange soda and those are the main types. Dr. Pepper has a unique flavor that I'd describe as being like cinnamon soda. It's probably closet to a cola, but it's its own thing.
fasterthanfood@reddit
I agree, but it’s interesting that you include orange soda as a main type but not root beer. I rarely see a soda fountain or restaurant without some kind of root beer option, but it’s maybe 50/50 whether they have orange soda. I wonder if that’s regional?
Also, it’s worth noting that there are generic versions of Dr Pepper, but they’re all pale imitations of the original product. It feels qualitatively different from Coke vs. Pepsi, A&W vs. Barq’s root beer, or the various lemon-lime sofas, all of which feel like legitimate variations rather than an imitation.
Ballmaster9002@reddit
Great point! I fucking hate root beer so I always forget it exists.
timdr18@reddit
Have you tried Birch Beer?
Ballmaster9002@reddit
I have. I'm not a fan of the soda-beers (birch beer, ginger beer, root beer, etc).
Not being an internet jerk, just not my thing and I forget they exist outside of my own little world.
fasterthanfood@reddit
Sorry to remind you of this scourge.
(It’s probably my favorite soda outside of situations where Coke just goes perfectly with the meal, not that I drink much of any soda, so, more for me.)
thestereo300@reddit
True. Its main benefit is it is unique.
theflamingskull@reddit

BadCatBehavior@reddit
Something about the flavor of Dr pepper works well in diet and zero sugar formats, better than a lot of other soda flavors.
The strawberries and cream one is my favorite 🤤
556ers-N-Pineapples@reddit
Strawberries and Cream Dr Pepper is the second greatest soda of all time. The greatest? Berries and Cream Dr Pepper. It was only out for one year in like 2008, my dream is they bring it back some day.
OginiAyotnom@reddit
7-Up Gold was the best.
It had a nice ginger flavor that I only found much later with ginger beer.
HummDrumm1@reddit
Strawberry DP > Strawberries & Cream DP
BadCatBehavior@reddit
Shit I didn't know that existed. What kind of berry flavor was it?
I miss Pepsi Blue. That shit was a hot item back when I was in middle school. There'd be like 100 kids crowding around the cafeteria vending machines trying to get their hands on it haha
556ers-N-Pineapples@reddit
I think a mix of dark berry flavors, the can was purple. The new blackberry dr pepper, if they added cream, might actually be pretty close.
I never tried Pepsi Blue but I remember my brother was out drinking one night, drank a lot of that too, and upchucked blue puke into the bathroom sink lol
n00bca1e99@reddit
There's a blackberry Dr. Pepper? Haven't seen it round my parts yet.

Cherry vanilla Dr Pepper from Sonic is the best, but this is right behind it.

-forbiddenkitty-@reddit
That blackberry and the coconut one from last year hits.
AnitaIvanaMartini@reddit
I agree, the full sugar one is best, but the low calorie ones are almost as good
SevenSixOne@reddit
I think that's why they (used to?) market it as "tastes more like regular Dr. Pepper"-- something about that hard-to-place flavor camouflages the slightly uncanny fake sweetness really well!
Sweet_Cinnabonn@reddit
I'll check that out, thank you
phred_666@reddit
I’m diabetic so I can’t have the regular sugared version. Of all the diet soft drinks, Diet Dr. Pepper and Zero Sugar Dr. Pepper are the ones that taste closest to the regular out of all the soft drinks I have tried.

I'd fill a swimming pool with it and drown myself.
I'd replace the cold water supply in my house with it.
In a perfect world, it would rain Dr. Pepper.
Slow_Access_6031@reddit
First of all, nice joke.
To answer your question, no.
I like Dr. Pepper. But even I realize that it is just another good flavor. Like any other thing, you will find fan-atics who say it is the best thing since water was invented.
Nothing is that great. (Except my Swedish fish. They are the best thing since food was invented.)
clearly_not_an_alt@reddit

Honestly there has to be crack in it. Just stay away because it’s addictive.
If I could inject it into my veins I would.
MMARapFooty@reddit
Dr Pepper is my personal favorite soft drink .
AnitaIvanaMartini@reddit
It has a completely unidentifiable flavor, I think. You can isolate a couple of flavors, but it’s complex. I quite like it. Some people even drink it hot, like coffee.
Unhappy_Chef_4143@reddit
I honestly can’t stand it, the flavor is just not it for me but my husband loves it !
MonsoonMermaid@reddit
I get irrationally angry if I go somewhere and they don’t have Dr Pepper because I’m forced to choose from a bevel of disgusting drinks that only wish they were as good as Dr Pepper.
I actually lived overseas a few times and in one place they didn’t have a lot of Dr Pepper. Actually in a lot of places. But I lived in this place the longest. And me and the other American in town would hear there was a shipment in at the local shop of dr p and would rush over and fight over buying it out to stock up on. Those bitches had all the Coca Cola though. All day every day.
It is that good. To me. Personally. Opinions probably vary American wide though.

terrovek3@reddit
Very few doctors actually die in the prolongation of Dr. Pepper, as they are milked, like cows or goats. Some succumb to the elements, disease, abuse, etc., but that's more incidental to the process than essential. Back in the day, before more dtri gent government regulations took hold, the average podiatrist would yield only a dozen 6 packs of Dr P before being put out to pasture. But with modern farming methods we can expect to net hundreds of cans in 12 OZ denominations, along with dozens of 3 liters from most oncologists, surgeons, even some species of chiropractors see use in the Diet and Cherry fields.
We've really come a long way.

Perdendosi@reddit
I would agree that it's the best zero calorie soda, and probably close to the best sugar soda. It advertises that 23 flavors comprise its recipe (it's a trade secret, but some websites have guessed them: https://www.mashed.com/255301/the-truth-about-dr-peppers-blend-of-23-flavors/)
But in that list, you see lots more florals, fruits, sweets and spices than in a "regular" cola formula like Coke. So it's a little creamer, a little fruitier, and a little spicier than cola (but not as much as, say, root beer).
fasterthanfood@reddit
Good summary. Just to clarify, this is “spicier” in the sense of having more different spices (think cinnamon), not the hurt-your-mouth spice of capsaicin.

We've had a lot of "Is [X] junk food really that good?" questions lately. I feel like the answer to every single one is - they're junk food. Chipotle, Dr. Pepper, Cheesecake Factory, whatever. They're cheap, fast, junk foods designed to appeal to huge swathes of people. Some people like [X], some people don't.
whirlygirlygirl@reddit
I don't like it on its own, but I do like it as a mixer
Major_Sympathy9872@reddit
I once wrote a poem while under the influence of LSD called "feeling Dr. pepper" it was a life changing experience...
DimitriElephant@reddit
Grew up loving Dr. Pepper, but more of a Coke guy myself. I think Pibb Xtra is better than Dr. Pepper today, but I’d be in the minority thinking that.
It is hard to beat a fountain Dr. Pepper. Don’t really enjoy it in bottles or cans anymore.
cschoonmaker@reddit
Obviously I'm in the minority here. I cannot stand the taste of Dr.Pepper and would avoid it at all costs.
Mustang46L@reddit
It is my favorite soda.
Intense_Rush_1397@reddit
Here's an Indian Youtuber reviewing it.
Sinchanzo@reddit
For me, Dr. Pepper is really good when you haven’t had it in a while.
banshee_bubbles@reddit
Dr. Pepper is great. It's the only soda that tastes good both cold and warm (perfect in the winter with a lemon), it's sweet but not too sweet, and it's not too acidic like coca cola. It's like drinking a hug.
Shot-Artichoke-4106@reddit
I don't care for it. I'm not much of a soda drinker anyway, but when I do have it, I usually go for Coke or Pepsi, Sprite, or sometimes Root Beer. Dr Pepper does have a very loyal following though. Some people just love it. Soda in general is not good for you, so no one should really be drinking a lot of it.
cfcblue26@reddit
I think it's disgusting, it tastes like cough medicine. Probably the only soda I don't like.
Pixelated_Penguin808@reddit
I used to like it when I was a kid, but haven't had it in years. As an adult I also rarely drink soda in general however, aside from very rarely in the summer when I get in the mood for a cream soda.
emueller5251@reddit
I like it. It's like cherry coke with a bite.
WichitaTimelord@reddit
I don’t drink much soda, especially stuff with calories.
My 14 year old, however, is obsessed with Dr. Pepper. I don’t buy it for him other than occasionally when we eat out. I think my step daughter bought some for him using his money. His mom bought him a Doctor Pepper t-shirt that he wears. He even mentioned maybe going to Baylor to be in Waco. Cringe for me. My mom’s cousin went to Baylor and she is much more conservative than I care for, nice woman but I don’t want my son to go that route if at all.possible. I imagine this is just a phase
Phaedrus317@reddit
That’s a hard no for me.
BarnBurnerGus@reddit
Yes, it is.
Difficult_Pirate_782@reddit
When there was only coke and tab, yes dr. pepper is that good
ddrober2003@reddit
My favorite soda, though I try to limit how much soda I drink. I remember when studying abroad in Japan I couldn't get it except for when I was in a big city and I liked it enough to lug a case back to my dorm, but I wouldn't go in just for it.
cool_weed_dad@reddit
It’s my second favorite soda and my go-to as you can find it everywhere. It’s kind of halfway between a cola and root beer.
My favorite is Moxie but even in New England it can be hard to find.
Katskit89@reddit
I was never really into soda. I don’t like the taste.
tacmed85@reddit
I don't care for it, but it is extremely popular
papisilla@reddit
It's the second best selling soda in the country. I think it would out sell coke if coke hadn't done such a good job with marketing and brand placement just putting it in people's faces for generations
Blutrumpeter@reddit
It's not life changing but it's one of my favorites. Definitely something to try if you get the chance but don't expect too much
Fuginshet@reddit
It's unique, there's nothing else that tastes like it, which is a big part of its popularity. There's an old school wives tale that it's carbonated prune juice, but that's completely false. There are knock off brands such as Dr. Pibb, but they are not the same.
calicoskiies@reddit
I think it’s only ok, but my husband loves his bbq water.
mothwhimsy@reddit
It's definitely my least favorite of the big 3 popular colas that we have. My husband loves it, I would rather have Pepsi. I think when it comes to limited edition flavors, Dr. Pepper does it the best though
Avent@reddit
I like it, as far as sodas go.
You should be aware that Dr. Pepper does intentionally market to young people over social media. It's a working strategy, they recently surpassed Pepsi for #2.
bienenstush@reddit
I'm a non soda drinker but yes, it's freaking delicious. I'll enjoy a diet one every so often
kd0g1982@reddit
I’m not much of a soda drinker but I wouldn’t pass up a can of barbecue soda water.
Disastrous-Mess-7236@reddit
Not really. Then again, you shouldn’t trust soda opinions of a guy who seriously doesn’t like carbonation.
Aggressive_FIamingo@reddit
When I was a kid, I noticed a lot of my friends moms drinking Dr. Pepper, so in my mind it was a drink for "old" ladies. I thought it was disgusting back then.
Randomly in my mid-30s I started liking it. So I was right around the age my friends moms were when I saw them drinking it. So it confirmed my theory it is a drink old ladies like.
Zack1018@reddit
I like it a lot, plus it has the coolness factor of not being a part of the Pepsi or Coke conglomerates
HidingInTrees2245@reddit
It used to be my favorite years ago when I actually liked sodas. I don't know what happened to my taste buds, but I despise all soda now. I think that started when I discovered coffee. 😊
leonchase@reddit
I would be really curious to know what a non-American thinks of it. To my taste, it always seemed to inhabit a strange, spicy middleground between cola and root beer. And a lot of non-Americans HATE root beer.
No_Information_8973@reddit
Real Dr Pepper, as in made with real sugar is awesome. The stuff most of us get with HFCS is ok, but nothing beats the real stuff in a glass bottle... those were the days!
illegalsex@reddit
It's fine. Not inherently better or worse than Coke. It's just a different flavor, almost like cola with a vaguely spicy cherry taste.
Grandemestizo@reddit
It’s tasty.
IntergalacticSoup69@reddit
I'm not a soda drinker, but every now and again, I'll have a Dr. Pepper! I personally like the flavor!
chimbybobimby@reddit
I rarely ever drink soda. I never order it at a restaurant, only drink seltzer at home if I'm craving carbonation, and prefer water with some lemon juice added for hydrating at work.
However. There is something about Dr. Pepper that unleashes that dawg in me. I could chug it can by can without coming up for air, and I can't even really tell you what it actually tastes like. When I think about it, I don't even think it tastes that good. I just can't help myself. So, I allow myself 1 diet Dr. Pepper per week if I'm having a rough day. I buy it one bottle at a time or else.
lil_lexa@reddit
It is legitimately my addiction
Moto_Hiker@reddit
Nasty. Just plain nasty.
EmotionalPizzaRoll@reddit
Absolutely 😂
tu-BROOKE-ulosis@reddit
lol my sister in law just gave birth like two weeks ago, and literally the first thing she asked for when she got out of the C-section was for a Dr Pepper.
JadeHarley0@reddit
I fucking love it
sidran32@reddit
I still remember the first time I ever had Dr. Pepper.
I don't have that memory for any other drink.
It's really good.
redentification@reddit
We also put chefs in Chef Boyardee and captains in the Captain Morgan (US VI). It's our culture OKAY.
funkynotorious@reddit (OP)
If it's with Worcestershire sauce I think it should be allowed.
C5H2A7@reddit
It's my favorite soda, specifically Dr. Pepper Zero (the original is good, just too sweet/coats my tongue, I know it's weird I can't help it 😩😂) but yeah I'd say it's pretty well-liked as far as sodas go
vampyire@reddit
tends to be something you love or hate, I LOATH it but I know folks who love it.. don't get it but whatever
BioDriver@reddit
Never had this Dr. Pepper, but Dublin soda is good for what it is
DarkGamer@reddit
I like it, tastes like cola with prune juice
Rlyoldman@reddit
Dr Pepper is the worst. A flat Pepsi is superior.
eruciform@reddit
Food is subjective
Some people hate all soda
Or beer
Or water
I like Dr Pepper but others do not, this is not a universal
SaintsFanPA@reddit
I like it, but it is just another soda at the end of the day.
workntohard@reddit
Given the choice, and when available, Dr Pepper is my first choice when ordering.
misterlakatos@reddit
I grew up drinking a lot of Dr Pepper. I still love the taste; however, I mostly quit drinking mainstream sodas about 20 years ago. I will treat myself to a can of Dr Pepper once a year.
And it does taste best in a can.
Piney1943@reddit
Good for braising some pulled pork!
Cowboywizard12@reddit
Its good but its odd. It tastes like basically nothing else in the world
ImpossibleJob8246@reddit
It's one of better sodi pops. I like it super cold the spiciness hits harder
GreatGlassLynx@reddit
It’s not great. TBH I’ve always thought it smells kind of like formaldehyde.
PotatoPirate5G@reddit
It's one of the most popular drinks in the country. I enjoy it. Most people do.
angrysquirrel777@reddit
I think it's pretty good
Sabertooth767@reddit
It's not my favorite soda but it's good.
Tommy_Wisseau_burner@reddit
Good? Yes
That good? No
notthegoatseguy@reddit
I don't drink much soda but my Googling is Dr Pepper is now tied with Pepsi in terms of popularity.
I think it has a slight cherry taste to it? I imagine that's what makes it distinct among the three major sodas.
I'm not sure what you're watching but none of the youtube people I watch just have cartons of soda laying around.
bloodectomy@reddit
It's okay... it's just a soda. There's genuinely nothing special about it
FloridianPhilosopher@reddit
In my experience people either are okay with it or it's their absolute favorite.
I just think it's okay but I know people who LOVE it.
Sprite was always my go-to soda.
Current_Poster@reddit
It's alright. It's not my favorite, but it's not bad or anything.
Redbubble89@reddit
It's not quite cola, it's not quite cherry soda, it's not quite root beer, It's not mind blowing but see if you can order a case and have it shipped or go to a shop that specializes in soda. It's kind of hard to explain it to a foreigner.
Playful-Mastodon9251@reddit
I really like it. It's a good soda.
braywarshawsky@reddit
It isn't remarkable when compared to other soft drinks.
It's nice occasionally, but I must be in the "mood" for it. 99% of the time, I don't drink soda.
Gold_Telephone_7192@reddit
It’s my favorite soda, but it’s just soda. It’s kind of like cherry Vanilla Coke but better.
StarSines@reddit
I'll always pick Dr.Pepper if it's available. I like it, but i know it's not everyone's favorite. I like that it stays carbonated for a while after opening a can. I can crack one open at 10pm, go to bed, and get up around noon the next day and it's still fizzy. Can't do that with a coke or a sprite.
Ketzer_Jefe@reddit
It's my favorite soda. But it's also soda, so I don't drink it all that often to begin with.
