We grew up with the Holy Trinity!

Nobody’s ever come close with any of these roles even among the very best actors (and I like some of the others like Albert Finney a lot!). We got to witness all three of the GOATS at the same time. Think about how unlikely that is.

Am I the only one who doesn't recognize any of these?
FearlessFerret7611@reddit
No you're not. I would venture a guess that every British person here will know them, and most Americans will not.
Regionalism, imagine that.
Coakis@reddit
I recognized Poirot and Sherlock Holmes; both series were played regualrly on PBS channels when I was growing up South Carolina. And yes OP is right at least those two are Iconic, Jeremy Bretts portrayal of Holmes, and David Suchet's portrayal of Poirot are the ones I immediately think of when either of those characters are brought up.
Miss Marple may have occasionally been broadcast but I cant personally remember any episodes that I personally watched
I figure the only way in the US that xelinnals or early Millenials didnt recognize them (or say Red Green, or even are you being served) are people who didnt tune into PBS when they were younger.

I’m American. These all aired on standard cable channels: Marple on A&E, Holmes as a regular feature in “Masterpiece Mystery” on PBS (a spinoff of “Masterpiece Theater” which seems to have somehow eventually become just the Cumberbatch “Sherlock” and nothing else) and Poirot…well, somewhere or other anyways, I don’t know which channel. But probably not everybody watched them or knew about them.
weldedgut@reddit
Poirot was on A&E.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Canuck here. Named them before scrolling down.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
yeah but you guys are basically British ;-)
Nadathug@reddit
Canada is basically the UK’eh.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Jolly good. 🎩

Pip pip and a skibidi to you!

I suspect nobody recognizes them because broadcast TV was the default back then. Cable was expensive.
I don't recognize any of them either, but I didn't have cable until I was an adult living on my own. We couldn't even get PBS clearly over the air when I was a kid unless the stars aligned (possibly literally, I never was able to figure out why it rarely came through).
drwebb@reddit
So your family didn't watch PBS
graveybrains@reddit
Seriously? Not even Sherlock?
Anyway, Miss Marple, Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot.
DarkenL1ght@reddit
I recognized that the dude in the middle was wearing the same style of hat that Sherlock Holmes is typically portrayed as wearing. Never seen this iteration.
worldsgreatestben@reddit
Even after the names were provided, I only recognize Sherlock Holmes.
BulimicMosquitos@reddit
Nope, I just assumed it was a British TV thing that I didn’t get.
denim_skirt@reddit
Same lol. Maybe they are cricket players
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
You know exactly who they are.
They’re three people who have never been in your kitchen.
Biguitarnerd@reddit
Nope, they look vaguely familiar but I can’t place them.
alohans@reddit
I didn't get into Marple but I still watch Holmes and Poirot. Both of these actors are the definitive versions for me.
Anjapayge@reddit
I watched all 3 but can’t seem to find Sherlock Homes on streaming
NachoNachoDan@reddit
Honestly, Cumberbatch was so damn good you should just watch him as Sherlock instead
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
He played the role well as it was written: the problem is how it was written.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
Well, I’m a huge fan of Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss from their work on Doctor Who and I feel like this was written as well as any of the work they did on Who.
If you’re not a fan of Doctor Who from that era I can see why you might agree with me on that!
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
I’ve seen only a few episodes of it.
I like “Blink”.
NachoNachoDan@reddit
“Blink” is high quality Who 👌
theotherkafka@reddit
Me too! Inspired me to write my own whodunits.
DeadliftDingo@reddit
Anytime I’m working with an older customer, I try to make a Poirot reference. They light up at the sound of his name.
originalbrowncoat@reddit
I love David Suchet as Poirot, but I was surprised at how much I liked Kenneth Branagh’s performance in Orient Express.
CaptServo@reddit
The only bad thing I can say about Branagh's Poirot is that he is not Suchet. It is both highly complementary and damning at the same time.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
Meh.
VinceAmonte@reddit
I've only seen Brett's Holmes series. The other two I never got into, maybe I should give them a watch now??
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit (OP)
They’re excellent (but no one will ever surpass Sydney Lumet with “Orient”).
ZipperJJ@reddit
I am indeed obsessed.
Quixotegut@reddit
Suchet is the GOAT!
