Self check out

Pro, or con?
For me, I love them.
I can get, scan and go. Typically don't have to wait in a line, or deal with generational gaps.
Any conversations are generally an organic 30 seconds of bullshittery except for the occasional machine screw up
Jon1885@reddit
Don't like them.
ZealousidealGrape982@reddit
Shame on you. giving corporations free labor and taking jobs away from your neighbors.

Sanctimonious much??

Yes thank you for noticing

Not a flex,dude.
DEADFLY6@reddit
I think it's saw something where you scan the item, right when you pick it up off the shelf. Or it scans when you walk out the doors. No more registers or 'scan it your damn self aisles.'
psgrue@reddit
Pro. But I hate the “please place the item in the bag.” “It’s in the bag.” “please place the item in the bag.” “It’s in the damn bag.” “Please remove item from bagging area.” “I thought you wanted it in the bag!” “Please wait for attendant.”
I worked at a grocery store as a teen. And when I do take the cashier line, I will even conveyor sort and speed bag myself rather than wait for the stressed, understaffed cashier to do both.

I still think the “unexpected item in the bagging area! “ should be in the Dr Who Dalek voice.

NaughtyFoxtrot@reddit
100%. They don't bag it right anyway.
cofeeholik75@reddit
Why in the world would checker lay milk sideways in a bag. Or ANY liquid with a screw on top??
p.s. shop vacs are our friend when one has milk soaked car seats…
Historical-Gap-7084@reddit
I'm picturing George Costanza saying all this.
SilverAgeSurfer@reddit
"..It places the item in the bagging area, it does this whenever it's told..." Sometimes this is the dialogue that's going on in my head and I'm laughing out loud. People probably think I'm a wack job.
Significant_Ruin4870@reddit
What is this mythical attendant of which you speak?
I dumped 3 bags full of groceries back in the cart, took my canvas bags and left the local Mega-Lo-Mart a few months ago and never went back. The systems are so glitchy I can't get through 5 items without the little electronic harridan complaining about items in the bagging area and telling me to wait for the attendant. So I sit there several minutes until it self-clears (?) and then we rinse and repeat. But there is never a human to be found.
There is a small family grocery that ONLY has real people at checkout - they get my money now.
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
I really think anyone is alerted that you need assistance unless they are currently staring at you/your self-scan robot. Those lights don't actually call a person who's 4 lanes away.
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
If I want to buy alcohol or use a reusable bag it's a nightmare. Sometimes it rejects the added weight of the provieded paper bags. Then the machine tells me an attendant is on the way and seemingly no attendant is getting any kind of alert that someone needs help.
Sometimes I want to use them and sometimes I want a person to bag my damn shit for me because I worked all day and why would I do more work for free?
Daghain@reddit
Store pickup is where it's at. Never setting foot in a grocery store again if I can help it.
soonerwolf@reddit
Unless I need produce or meat, because I have had the worst luck with pickup and those items. Last time I used store pickup they picked chicken breasts full of fat and tomatoes with rotten spots.
Yes, I'm picky.
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see this comment. Whenever possible, this is my first choice. I love doing my grocery shopping online.
MinkieTheCat@reddit
I avoid in-store shopping as much as possible. I use target drive up and Amazon fresh delivery. If I have to go into a store and I only have a few things I will use self check out if I’m actually doing a full basket, (I usually do that about every 3 months) then I’ll use a cashier.

My grocery store has scanner guns by the doors. You can grab a gun and scan and bag your groceries as you shop. Then you just scan the barcode on the gun at self-checkout and voila you’re done. I also like it because it totals up the price for you while you shop so there are no surprises at checkout.
This is not the cheapest store near me but it’s the closest so between that and the gun, it is very convenient so I do about half my shopping there.
soonerwolf@reddit
Walmart only allows "scan and go" with their paid Walmart+ service. Why would I pay the company to let me do the same thing that their pickup service does for free with their own employees? If anything, I should get a 5% discount for using "scan and go" because it's saving them labor costs.
soonerwolf@reddit
Worked at Kroger as a bagger then a cashier during high school in the 80's. I was there when we first started using plastic bags. We spent two days training on the proper way to place items in the bags (boxes or cans on each end to make "walls" for support, then start putting stuff in the middle). We were told to avoid double-bagging with plastic, as it encourages overloading and is not as effective as paper when doubling.
Nowadays, the cashiers/baggers are obviously not trained the same way I was, as they are either only putting a few things in each bag at random, or double-bagging when not needed (I cannot count the times a cashier double-bagged a single one-gallon milk jug or six-pack of soda). I won't even get into the "not adhering to keeping cold items together" or "squishing the bread with the canned goods."
For those reasons, I prefer to self-checkout as I know how to pack the bags properly, especially when I have reusable bags.
ProfessionalCamera21@reddit
Its a must-have now, when you have people in the normal lanes that want to use every coupon known to man or argue over a sale they didn't read properly
mrkrag@reddit
If it can keep up with me scanning like I still work a register, yes.
I feel like some of them are intentionally kneecapped to prevent people playing under-ring games.
Lonely_Storage2762@reddit
I loved them until recently. I've been helping my mom shop because she broke her arm and it's difficult because of her age. She grew fatigued so she left me to check out her cart. My daughter also was with me and had her own stuff to check out. It was crowded so we went to the same checkout. I let her check out first. Then I checked out my few things after her including some items that were on the bottom of the cart ( pet food and large pack of soda). Then I checked out my mom. As I went to leave the worker told me to check out the stuff under the cart. I explained the situation including that I had already paid for them. She says it doesn't show it here ( evidently they have the ability to watch on their phones while you are checking out). We had to go through all our receipts and bags and even then she wouldn't let us leave until she checked the history for the register. What made me even more angry is that I had told her I needed a register that takes cash and card as I had three separate orders to ring up and two were paying in cash.
Then a few days later in a different town, my daughter and I were leaving the store. We both had small orders but checked out separately then put it in the same cart. We got stopped at the door and wasted 10 minutes trying to explain before I used my teacher voice and stood beside him, dividing the order and going through each item by physically lifting the product out and pointing to the receipt. Despite this he seemed sceptical but told us to go ahead. This never happened before self checkout.
Acrobatic-Let-6620@reddit
Depends how much stuff I have, under 10 I will usually do self checkout, any more I will go through the normal checkout to not hold up people in self checkout.
JoeL284@reddit
Not a fan, for the most part. I expect service from a service industry.
I remember going to the grocery store as a kid, and there were 8-10 registers manned by a cashier AND a bagger. Both of whom were trained on the proper way to bag groceries so they weren't overly heavy, you didn't have cleaning products with edible foods, and more delicate items didn't get crushed.
And then the bagger would walk you to your car, load the bags in your trunk, and take the cart back into the store.
I miss the old days. Now let me go and chase those whippersnappers off my lawn.
Wonderful-Duck-6428@reddit
I hate them.
oxfordclubciggies@reddit
The Lowes near me recently went to all self checkouts....but only had two of them open. So even when YOU'RE the cashier, there are STILL not enough cashiers!
ebar2010@reddit
I go to customer service or the returns counter and make them check me out.
Catsareintroverts@reddit
Our Lowes has annoying staff at self checkout who jump in to help when I’m clearly fine. Make up your mind! Is it self checkout or not!?
BigMomma12345678@reddit
I remember this from my last trip
CrankyDoo@reddit
That is mostly to prevent shoplifting rather than to help you. People are less prone to “forget” to scan an item when they know someone is watching them, and the offer to help is a reminder that you are being watched.
This_Tangerine_943@reddit
They have handheld monitors that can watch your terminal like looking over your shoulder.
CrankyDoo@reddit
It’s more important that the customer knows you are watching. If you can prevent the theft attempt, you can avoid uncomfortable confrontations and possibly alienating customers.
This_Tangerine_943@reddit
Smart carts are almost here. No more check outs as the cart will scan the item as you place it in the cart. When you walk out the door the contents are paid for by a membership card like costco. Walmart is going to implement membership entry/exit to data mine and theft prevention enhancement.
soopirV@reddit
My Costco does that. Sit DOWN, skippy, I got this!
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
Same at Wal Mart from what I've heard, but I haven't been in one since pre covid
ApprehensiveCamera40@reddit
Walmarts in our area did away with the self scans for a while. Too much theft happening.
Grunge4U@reddit
Same here, then they saw how much more they lost in payroll by adding cashiers and went right back to opening self checks.
External-Dude779@reddit
At ours, the people assigned to watch weren't actually watching. They'd stand around and talk. They closed all but two lanes for a few months and all of a sudden they started paying attention. And now at the most 4 lanes are open with 4 stations at each, 2 per side, and there's lines now where there never used to be lines. So we're now inconvenienced but no one was fired, all the same people who let the theft happen still have their jobs and we're now penalized because it takes us longer to checkout. Which defeats a big reason why we used them to begin with.
sajaschi@reddit
... To be fair, I don't think most Walmart workers make enough money to also willingly do the job of loss prevention...
ChavoDemierda@reddit
I will only use the contractors check out. I don't work for free.
Katerinaxoxo@reddit
This is the problem!! They make it “easier and quicker” but only open a few making a massive line.
Sadly at a few stores I have been to they said people were stealing and they shut the self checkout down for good. Now there is only 1 checker and checkout.
MissDisplaced@reddit
I have noticed this at Walmart too.
FweejTheOverseer@reddit
Most of the Home Depots near me have done the same.
RScottyL@reddit
Yeah, they still have to have someone there to make sure you ring all your items up
LordSavage2021@reddit
I almost never use them even if it does mean waiting in line. Call me a Luddite, but I'd rather the store create a job in my community.
ebar2010@reddit
Same for me. I refuse to use a self check out.
WarPotential7349@reddit
The sad truth is that the people who are getting hired for cashier jobs end up transferring out or quitting because customers are so awful. My friend is a hiring manager at Walmart and says most of her cashier hires quit before one month because they don't get paid enough to be abused the way they are, especially when you can get paid twice as much to be a fry cook at the McDonald's in the parking lot and never get assaulted.
DangerKitty555@reddit
Yup. You Luddites can hate these machines alllll you want to but Gen Z can’t hustle despite our efforts to instill the sane work ethic To their credit, the general public is eleventy billion times worse than when I cashiered at 16 and 17. So you can blame shitty entitled customers on why self-checkout is INEVITABLE. Sorry not sorry 🖖🏼😎
WarPotential7349@reddit
Dude, I honestly don't understand why people have to be so mean. Like instead of saying, "Excuse me, this item didn't ring up correctly," I have seen so many folks go straight to cussing and spitting and screaming and borderline assault over simple shit.
As an Xer, I think about all the times shit went wrong when I was completely alone. I had to figure out the problem, the solution, AND how to hide the evidence when my parents got home.
But folks want to go nuclear and assault a stranger over a scanning error that can be really easily overridden if you're just patient and say "thank you?"
CCWaterBug@reddit
Eesh! What hell hole do you live in?
I've spent 5byrs as an employee, and 35 as a customer with 4x a week visits for a major chain and the total number of "cussing spitting screaming borderline assault" events is under 5. Total.
DangerKitty555@reddit
Exactly! And as much as Gen Z drives me nuts those are MY BABIES so when adults go nuclear on them I get very VERY DEFENSIVE!
WarPotential7349@reddit
Remember when we were all Breakfast Clubby and swore we would never treat kids like us this way? 🤔🤔
DangerKitty555@reddit
I’m still Breakfast Clubby, when did that change? 😎 And I can mean as hell but only for a reason I’ve told Gen Z a bajillion times if I take the time to cuss you out it’s because I CARE and I might just be trying to save one of these kiddos from clear and present danger…
LordSavage2021@reddit
Yeah, I'm sure that's true. I used to run a register and there were some awful/abusive people that came through my line. Then I got an office job and there were some awful/abusive people there too.
You really can't win. :-)
WarPotential7349@reddit
Seriously! I live in a small-ish area, and I used to fantasize about quitting my job at an insurance agency to work at the Taco Bell down the street to get away from all the screaming.
Then my coworker cruelly burst my bubble by mentioning that the businesses shared the same customers, who probably weren't any nicer to the folks at Taco Bell.
(I quit and work for myself now lol)
Special_Luck7537@reddit
Yeah, it's those generational issues that absolutely pissoff the Karen's because they are so inconvenienced..
BuuBuuOinkOink@reddit
Cashier jobs may be decreasing, but for every one lost there is one gained in online shopping fulfilment and delivery.
Apart_Reindeer_528@reddit
Love, love love
Visible_Structure483@reddit
Smaller hauls I use it, but when I'm doing the big bi-weekly shopping I prefer to have the checker do it. There just isn't enough room to work with a full cart at the self checkout spots.
I go on the same day every time so I get the same 20-something woman that is my 'usual' checker. She is super fast and hasn't said 10 words to me in 5 years.
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
This is me, too, but even with a few items, I'll sometimes choose a checker if there isn't a line. Like obviously if I have alcohol, or if I have any items that are very light that are often problematic because the bagging area doesn't register them. Or if I have a lot of produce, because I'm not super fast at entering those in.
I generally just choose whichever option I think will be most efficient.
eLishus@reddit
Oy, the efficient non-talkative cashier. That would be my go to every time.
But for self checkout I agree: small hauls are fine; bigger should go to a staffed register. I’ve noticed many places putting 10-15 item limits on self checkout which makes sense and aligns with our experience.
mr_yuk@reddit
Ugh, for real. I think my local grocery store trains the cashiers to ask what you have planned for the weekend. I started saying “oh you know, the usual, just watching some movies and smoking some weed.” I don’t smoke and it’s very illegal here but I love the look on their faces.
ConcentrateRemote801@reddit
I like to mess with the happy and cool people at Starbucks! When they ask what I’m doing for the day I say “nothing” and they have no chirpy response.
eLishus@reddit
That’s awesome. Apply some dark humor to mess with them. I don’t mind some chattiness as long as things are flowing. But some love to inspect and comment on every item as they ring it up. I don’t need your judgment - lol
Catlore@reddit
I've got a cashier that takes with me (I'm fine with with him) and is STILL efficient AF. I will get in his line every time.
eLishus@reddit
Yeah there are a couple of gems like this out there. On the other hand, there’s the guy who talks way too much and always greets my wife with an “aloha!” She’s Filipino/Chinese. 😂
ConcentrateRemote801@reddit
Yup. I go dark when the cashier asks me about my day, tells me about their aches and pains, etc. I avoid them and go to the ones that give me a smile , say thank you, and send me on my way!
SeriousData2271@reddit
Same!
SmartNotRude@reddit
Same here except that I've become good friends with one of the cashiers at my regular grocery store.
omysweede@reddit
In Sweden we have self checkouts where you just scan, place in your carrier bag, replace the hand scanner and pay.
So much more efficient than when you have to scan at the checkout.
Tricky_Gas007@reddit
Pro until all are down and you're behind someone who struggles with self checkout..
Aggravating-Shark-69@reddit
Scan and go is amazing. Self check out sucks
SkipInExile@reddit
Won’t use one. Always make sure I’m being served by a real person. Keep work for the humans, not the machines..
black65Cutlass@reddit
I hate them unless I only have one or two items.
GiganticusVaginacus@reddit
Pro. Just wish the bagging area wasn't blocked off by all the bags. I'm looking at you Target.
PMMEBITCOINPLZ@reddit
I hate it. I won't use it unless I have to.
pochoproud@reddit
I don’t mind it if I have a few (less than 10) items, but a full cart is at the checkout. Also, I buy a lot of clearance items from Safeway, and it is a major PITA to use the self checkout with more than one, because you need the attendant to okay it.
Adequate-Monicker634@reddit
Always a lot of "I hAtE interaction!" in these threads. Please, I'm an avoidant maladroit who abhors small talk, and have never felt imposed upon by a chatty cashier. At least a peon worker can enjoy their day.
MeowMeowCollyer@reddit
I refuse to use self checkout.
Historical-Gap-7084@reddit
Sometimes the regular checkout line is faster and they don't talk to me other than to say, "How are you?"
Fun-Distribution-159@reddit
prefer it so i dont have to deal much with idiots in line who take forever for their 5 items to figure out how to use the payment terminal
eurydice_aboveground@reddit
Or that one person who writes a check!
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
Omg that still exists? Let me guess they are like 90 years old? 😆
eurydice_aboveground@reddit
Pretty much! It's not often, but one of the Kroger locations near me shares a parking lot with a senior living condo. So you get the random check writer.
SkandalousJones@reddit
I don't work for free for anyone.
mimiharmon1@reddit
I love them! My 80 year old father can’t stand them and causes a commotion each time he has to use one.
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
Why are the old folks like that?! Why is it so hard for them to accept technology? I mean they are designed for people that aren’t that bright. I don’t EVER want to be the person that does not tolerate change or progress. It’s a great way to be left behind. That’s terrifying.
SelfCharming353@reddit
Life hack. Get the organic fruits n veggies. Use the code for the pesticide filled ones.

I love them and I eyeroll everytime I hear "I don't work here this isn't my job".
Let me swipe my things and just be on my way. I dont want to make small talk with cashiers (though I will be polite and give it back).
I dont want to talk about if I want stamps or ice or if I found everything.
I also dont want to wait for the bagger to play tetris with my groceries taking forever to fit the most perfect alignment of my groceries.
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
All of this! 😂😂

I love them too. I hate waiting on an old person or kid taking their good ole time and trying to make small talk.

OMG, yes! Self checkout is the best, you can put in your headphones, do your shopping, bag, pay and leave without talking to anyone, it's amazing.
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Same. It’s incredible!
FakenFrugenFrokkels@reddit
This💯I talk with you people here. I’m ok with that.
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
Love them!! I like stuff like this as it keeps my brain active and engaged no matter how mundane it is. I don’t want to be passive and having to make bs conversations while someone else does what I can do at self check out. It’s also why I prefer making online appointments rather than calling and ordering online rather than in person brick and mortar shopping. No thanks. Been there done that. 😂
cl0ckw0rkman@reddit
I prefer to have a human checking my items and ringing me up.
I don't work there. I'm not being paid to do work.
I'm also a "small talk" lover.
Not that I have actually been inside a grocery store in over four years. I have everything delivered now.
But when given the choice, I pick human interaction over working for free.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
It changed my life, as someone with severe social anxiety. But I hate delivery apps (which serve some of the same purposes, but part of that is probably I hate paying extra plus fees and tips). But that was 20ish years ago and I don’t have the same issues anymore, I will go through a regular cashier lane when available if it makes sense (used to avoid them no matter what).
jIdiosyncratic@reddit
I do it every chance I get. If I don't have a ton of items. Of course if you want to buy alcohol or Robitussin you get stopped until they can come over to check your ID.
Maleficent-Row8304@reddit
Every self checkout is one less person who has an actual job. We are giving jobs to technology. Immigrants aren’t taking them.
Prime_Choice_Depths@reddit
“Generational Gaps” what does that mean? Like when a clerk speaks with a customer in a friendly manner?
DagnyLeia@reddit
I am so grateful for the invention of self check-outs. I don't have to talk to anybody and my bags get packed efficiently. I was even happier when they removed the less than 10 items requirement. Kroger has several lanes and one has 4 machines that have plenty of space for even my big shopping. Win win win.
1sixxpac@reddit
The cashier is always a jerk.
Administrative-Bed75@reddit
I like scanning my items, what can I say. It's like the easiest and least eventful video game.
Wonderful_Spell_792@reddit
Always self checkout. So much faster.
Hungry-King-1842@reddit
I hate the damned things. They should be illegal. Yeah it’s a low end menial job, but that’s the job some people want or are qualified for. Keep people working.
VendaGoat@reddit
I use em for the small runs.
In out and gone, 15 minutes. Who cares.
Big runs I go through a cashier.
pancaketac0@reddit
Love them...but can't buy alcohol in my state so that kinda sucks on a beer run.
TemperatePirate@reddit
Hate them for two reasons. First up, I have had too many experiences where I have to wait for help anyway. But mostly, I like chit chat.
Deitaphobia@reddit
I loved them at first. Now I refuse to use them on account of the built in mug-shot cameras.
TubaDog9705@reddit
I like listening to podcasts and such while I shop, so generally pro for me.
Bigsisstang@reddit
These are only good for 10 items or less and should only be used for such. I hate it when people go through these with a month worth of groceries. They generally tie up the register with errors and unfamiliarity with the machine.
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
I use them no matter cart size, but I can typically get in and out faster either way than most who only do a few items... Now I have seen people using them with literally 2-3 carts, and it's not just that they take up that register, but tend to block 1 or 2 more in the process
LilJourney@reddit
You must have better self checkout machines. The ones at the stores around here slow me WAY down because they are convinced I need to "remove item from bagging area" followed immediately by "place item in bagging area" followed again by "unexpected item in bagging area" resulting in a 10 min wait for the clerk to eventually work their way over to me to unlock the machine so I can go through the whole thing again with the next item. I use to love them for getting 3 or 4 things and getting out, but you can't even get through those few without the machine glitching. I've given up and it's either cashier or I'm just not shopping. I'll pay an extra $2 at the corner pharmacy just to avoid dealing with those things. Cashier there can get me out in less than 60 seconds (they are a non-talker).
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
I am deeply curious about what generational gaps are doing to your anxiety levels in a 5 minute encounter.
I'm not judging I just...like... I work with people from Boomer to Gen Z all day. I have no concern over who rings me up or bags my groceries.
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
It's not an anxiety, I've got friends 25 years younger and people 30 years older.
But at that point I'm focused on loading and going, not people watching... I don't want to walk out mad at the old person writing a check or some young people "being cute"
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
Yeah, the length of the line definitely impacts my decision.
Mobile-Quote-4039@reddit
Con. Walmart has already mistakenly had someone arrested at their home for an unchecked item ( not a flatscreen tv either). I refuse to participate. I am also a union member and care about people being put out of a job. The more you use the machines the fewer cashiers there will be. Don’t be selfish. Think of all that is involved,be patient and wait in line like everyone used to. You don’t work at the store, why the hell should you do the company’s work for them.
Suitable-Echo-3359@reddit
When I am by myself. When my kids are with me and try to help scan, something glitches every time.
Fast_Spray_1927@reddit
I never use it. It just takes people's jobs away. I'd rather wait in line then go through the hassle of that self check-out now maybe if it were 15% cheaper then I'd do the work for them.
Strict_Weather9063@reddit
I hate them I’m am a customer why is customer service a thing they don’t do?
Insufficient_Mind_@reddit
I feel like people who use the self checkout should get some kind of discount, after all we are doing the cashiers hob for then 🤔

sfdsquid@reddit
I prefer self-checkout because I find chit chat with strangers tiresome. But I do feel sorry that they are taking away jobs from the unskilled.
lysistrata3000@reddit
They're only ok if I have a few items. Some stores have self-checkout bagging carrels that are about as big as a large pizza, and that's annoying. The last few times I've used them, I've always wound up "waiting for attendant."

I prefer the human. Always. Even if there is no line at self checkout, I will still wait and connect with a human. (While we still can, hahah)
imtiredmakeitstop@reddit
Bitch I check myself out every day.
MonoBlancoATX@reddit
So do the rest of us ;)
MonoBlancoATX@reddit
The vast majority of companies that use them are using them as a way to screw their employees.
If I only have one or two items, I occasionally use them, but in general, it's CON for me.
jtrades69@reddit
i used to hate them. especially in the early days when it would either not scan or overscan or not let you continue unless you put it in the bag.
now i don't want the cashier handling my stuff, especially toys where they might damage the packaging.
Simple-Purpose-899@reddit
I'll stand in line all day before I check my own groceries. With that said my local store has a policy of opening lines any time more than two people are in line. Usually I just roll right up to someone waiting.
True-Adeptness-1059@reddit
I hate them! I already have two jobs I don’t need to do someone else’s job when I get off from one of mine!
DonnyDiddledIvanka@reddit
I love the concept and like most of them. The ones that do it right are great. Some of them are still terrible.
jeffreynya@reddit
they are fine, but I prefer curbside pickup. Bring that shit out and put it in my car and I don't ever have to go into the store.
damageddude@reddit
I was a supermarket cashier in the '80s. Until my local store made it less easier, I enjoyed testing my muscle memory.
Kwyjibo68@reddit
Greatly prefer self checkout, as long as the system works well and it doesn’t flag for stupid stuff.
JETEXAS@reddit
It always hassles me about cold medicine, glue, alcohol, etc., so I end up having to wait for an attendant.
octobahn@reddit
Generally, pro. I wouldn't shed any tears if they're pulled out though. I hate that they took jobs away from people, but some of these cashiers really should not have a customer-facing role.
Even_Contact_1946@reddit
I like them a lot but, everyone of them costs someone a job. Idk
gobbledegook-@reddit
If they would keep enough of them OPEN, and would police the idiots who leave their shopping cart in everyone’s way so we can’t get past them to get to the next register or to leave, and if the gestapo cashiers would back off, I’m going to scan the thing on the bottom of my shopping cart, you don’t need to get in my personal space, I’d forever be self checkout.
I want to talk to as few humans as possible. I don’t want to chat about what I’m buying or if I found everything okay or the weather.
Paid for Walmart+ about 6 months ago and now I get “free” delivery. THAT’S what I like best. I still won’t let them pick out produce or meat for me, but everything else, bring it to my door!
rosesforthemonsters@reddit
I prefer the self check lane over chatty or slow as hell cashiers. Give me a non-chatty cashier who knows how to bag properly and I'll use that lane. Most of the time those cashiers are unicorns -- good luck finding one.
kblv-forred@reddit
I am anathema to the self-checkout machines. They hate me so I go through the cashier line.
3rdMuseofAquarius@reddit
Last time I tried the Machine, i deeply broke it. The manager had to be summoned after each previous member of the employee hierarchy was increasingly non-plussed, and his quote kinda made me proud, bc this was in a college town: "Well. I have never seen it THIS broke before." And all i had was a dr pepper & chips.
Tiovivo1@reddit
Pro: I don’t have to go through small pleasantries such as hi, how are you? Blah blah blah. Sometimes I just want to get my stuff and go.
Con: I don’t freaking work there!
So I gather my stuff, ring myself up and bag my own things and pay the same price as the regular checkout? Maybe a discount should be offered since I’m doing the work of a cashier.
b1e9t4t1y@reddit
I tried Walmarts scan and go. Hated it bc after you’re done you wait in another line for them to verify you scanned everything before you can exit. Should be called scan and wait.

cmb15300@reddit
When I only have a couple of items, AND the machine is working properly it's great, I especially love avoiding the game of 20 questions management forces the cashiers to engage in
(Travel tip: in Mexico they're called 'autocobros' and sometimes they're 'solo tarjeta'-card only. There's usually an option for English)
goingloopy@reddit
I don’t mind it at Walmart because they don’t have that asinine bagging area thing. But I won’t do it anywhere else.
FoundationAny7601@reddit
I like it but wish there was a discount for doing it myself.
FatGuyOnAMoped@reddit
It depends on the store.
Aldi is great, because they have those bigass bar codes on almost every package. Everything is bundled up and easy to scan. Plus you don't have to deal with the cashier rushing you along.
The ones at Target are the bane of my existence. It seems they never work properly and you always end up needing assistance.
THEREALSTRINEY@reddit
Pro, until some douche in front of me doesn’t know what the F they are doing. You should have to be certified in self checkout to use the self checkout

Walmart+ ... Scan and go (Sam's club too), walk up to any open self checkout, can in the qr code and done. Some stores have a dedicated scan and go "register" and you can also bypass all other people standing in line waiting for self checkout
kalelopaka@reddit
I like them simply because I don’t usually have more than 20 items at a time these days, so it’s quick and easy.
post_polka-core@reddit
I loathe them. I don't work there. I don't want to deal with it.
Vulturev4@reddit
My problem with them is my local grocery store, when there are barely any customers in the store, they keep all but one closed, so the one self checkout line has 5 people waiting, and none of the others.
I don't mind checking myself out, but enough with the games, opening just enough self checkout lanes so that there is always a line.
Fast_Courage_2934@reddit
I hate self-checkout. I feel rushed. I also find you don't have to make small talk if you don't want to. A simple hello and thank you are usually sufficient.
KnottyGummer@reddit
I generally prefer self checkout for groceries. I use reusable bags and cashier's do one of or both of two things. First, they like to ignore the fact that I have them. Secondly, they just throw stuff in willy-nilly and only half fill them. Then, when the inevitable plastic bags start being used, they put only 2-3 items in a bag and start another. I end up with two dozen plastic pieces of garbage. If I checkout and bag my own stuff I have 6 or 7 neatly organized bags that makes putting things away when I get home a breeze.
Adventurous-Hyena366@reddit
Where do you go that cashiers bag your groceries. Even if they do offer to do this, can't you just tell them you'll do it yourself?
KnottyGummer@reddit
Even if that wasn't an issue, I'd probably still use self checkout. Not only does that mean everything goes right where I want it to streamline putting things away when I get home, it's one less set of hands touching my food. People are pretty gross, after all. And yes, I know that includes even myself.
KnottyGummer@reddit
Around here, the only one that doesn't have the cashier bag is Aldi. The larger regional grocers and Walmart all have racks of plastic bags on lazy susans right by the cashier so they automatically go from conveyor to scanner to plastic bag. There's not really a good way for them to hand off to a staging area after scanning, or even somewhere place a reusable for the cashier to do it. The lazy susans take up a lot of space. However, my 3 locally owned grocers can, and I do use those cashiers and bag my own. And, I can get paper bags at those establishments when I don't have my reusable bags.
Rickk38@reddit
Con. I'm never in a hurry, and the grocery store I go to is never crowded, reasonably staffed, and the cashiers there are consistent so I'm acquainted enough that I get some really entertaining shit-talk passed on to me about other employees or a few of the crazy people who shop there.
keithrc@reddit
I'm a fan, except in cases where they used self-checkout as an excuse to shitcan all the actual cashiers, and there aren't enough (or any) available when I need one.
thegreathoudini73@reddit
I use them. It’s a way for stores to be more profitable by requiring less employees. This means less jobs. It’s in response to the rise in minimum wage
thecardshark555@reddit
I scan and bag while I shop then just scan my total at the end. It's fantastic.
If a store doesn't have that available, I always hit the self check
BuffyTheMoronSlayer@reddit

randomredditor0042@reddit
Yes but they don’t display my face on a screen in front of me. I don’t have an issue with security cameras cctv etc but it’s triggering to see my face pop up on a screen. If they don’t trust me enough to scan my own groceries they can do it for me.

abbys_alibi@reddit
Hate it. One or two items, fine. I 'll suck it up. But 99% of the time the machine has some issue with me and I have to ask for help anyway. I'd rather stand in a line of 5 people before walking over to self checkout.
couchwarmer@reddit
It depends on the observed speed of the available checkouts, whether self or individually staffed. Some people are fast and some are slow.
I go so far as to try to arrange items in my cart as I go to make the checkout process more efficient.
Roland__Of__Gilead@reddit
If self-checkout is all that's available, I will walk right back out and go somewhere else. I've put items back because I didn't notice. I don't make a scene, I don't yell at people for using them even though I think they're ridiculous, they're just not for me. There's something about the set-up, the actions of scanning and the bag area that feels super awkward, I'm not interested in doing their work for them at no benefit to myself, and I enjoy the small talk with the actual cashier.
Conscious-Beyond2006@reddit
I don't get hung up on the small stuff like this, doesn't matter either way.
queenoforeos@reddit
I love self check out. I rarely go in person to shop anymore. I order my groceries online and pick up 99% of the time and then shop in person things I'm finicky about like specific produce. I'm tech savvy so it doesn't befuddle me to key in codes or weights and I don't have to talk to anyone and can get and go. Unless my kid wants cigs (he's 23) and then I have to go to the special check out and actually talk to someone. blech.
SwimmingBridge9200@reddit
I like them for small purchases. Even slightly larger purchases. But no for say a week’s worth of groceries. I absolutely detest them if my husband is with me unless he just stands there. He gets frustrated with either scanning or bagging and gets super cranky. So whenever he heads towards one I steer him away and remind him of how we always end up bickering and it taking too long.
Omg I think we have turned into my late grandparents with the bickering at times. 🤣
frog980@reddit
If it fits in 2 or 3 bags I don't mind them. At first I didn't like them cause of taking someone's job. But now it seems that there is enough interest in pickup orders that the ones that would have been running another checkout are now filling orders.
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
Yeah, there's literally 3 times as many employees doing that than there ever was cashiers
wyohman@reddit

geminiloveca@reddit
love/hate relationship.
pros: usually faster, don't have to talk to anyone, or feel self conscious of my purchases
cons: finicky machines (esp scales), loud announcements from machine, machine's impatience that I can't remove my card from the dock 0.00001 seconds after the transaction is approved, having to wait for assistance because machine has a meltdown because I only wanted 1 habanero and not a whole pound....
And hearing that Target and Walmart prosecute errors at self checkout even months after the fact makes me want a cashier because then I have *some* protections left as a consumer.

Charming-Pack-5979@reddit

Hate them. I remember a time when the bagger would help you to your car and load your groceries. There should be a discount to shoppers for doing the stores job. 20% at time of self checkout. And dont get me started on how you are overly observed at those self checkouts to make sure you dont steal.
ThisNameIsTakenTwo@reddit
Will seldom use self checkout. I would rather support the human working than a cost cutting machine.
CrowsSayCawCaw@reddit
Self checkout is generally faster.
My Stop and Shop supermarkets have handheld self-scanner devices that look kinda like bulky phaser weapons so you can scan your items and bag them as you go around the store, so at checkout all you have to do is scan the final tally checkout bar code at the register. Very convenient.
ClockSpiritual6596@reddit
This is the way, or Online shopping.

1995, go to the store, can't find something, ask the guy stocking shelves. Get all your crap in the cart, go to the checkout line, a friendly cashier rings all your stuff up and a friendly bagger puts it all in bags for you. And then asks if you'd like help getting it out to your car.
2025, you can't find something, too bad. You ring your own shit up and put it in your own bags and if you happen to interact with a store employee, they're almost always rude and/or have their face glued to their fucking phone.
What exactly do the store employees do nowadays, because they sure as shit aren't helping customers.
Trader Joe's is the one shining light of friendly customer service in the world, but even that is slipping.
Rev-RustyShackleford@reddit
I absolutely refuse to use self checkout. The price of goods includes all overhead costs, including the employees that checks you out. For a company to charge the same for less is BS. It’s directly supporting big business shitting on everyone.

Yes, until they started eyeballing me suspiciously. At WalMart the other day I was busy at the self checkout and the attendant stood there and watched me (for theft I suppose). I thought, "I remember the day when I stood there doing nothing while YOU checked and bagged my groceries--how the tables have turned!"
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
I had an experience like that at a Publix.
At first I thought the manager was standing there in case I needed help, but about midway I literally heard him speak into his Bluetooth "security film..." after I had set an item back in my cart because I was trying to bag things "my way".
I turned around and said, exactly why would you need security to film me when you're literally standing behind me like a peeping Tom?
After he stammered for a bit I said fuck it, and left everything there, what I'd bagged, stuff in cart everything. As I was walking out he tried to stop me like I'd stolen something, I turned around and told him he had a life choice to make real quick, because if he tried to detain me I'd have him arrested for false imprisonment and would sue Publix out of business.
Never been back in a publix since, but he backed off quickly.
Ironically, locally at least, judges have cracked down hard on stores using the courts to harass shoppers accusing them of larceny over missed scans and other legitimate mistakes
NoeTellusom@reddit
Generally hate it, especially if I have to stand on line to do so.
Also, the fact that we don't get a single rebate or discount for doing the store's OWN work is insane and outrageous.

keenr33@reddit

SnooPoems1106@reddit
If I was permitted to scan items at the same quick speed as an employee, I would love it, but the waiting for me to place each item in the bag plus a calculation pause for anti-theft purposes makes it maddening. Some take forever.
fshannon3@reddit
I'm for them, with caveats.
At the grocery stores where the self-checkouts are setup like a "bullpen" (kinda like Walmart), I really wish those were setup as express only. It's annoying when people have their carts loaded down in these checkouts which end up blocking the way for other people to get through.
If the grocery store has the standard type of checkout set up (with the long conveyor belt) as it's self checkout, then I'd be okay with large grocery orders going through that. A lot of the Weis markets here have those in addition to the smaller, 2 checkouts-per-lane self checks.
The grocery store we shop at has a sort of scan-and-go type of checkout. You can walk in, grab a scan gun, and scan your items in as you shop. Then at the register, all you have to do is scan a barcode that comes up on the scan gun and the register pulls up your order...then you just pay and head out the door.
ChavoDemierda@reddit
I don't like the idea of working for free. Self checkout is you working for free.
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
I see this argument a lot and I "get it". I don't think it really works that way, but I understand the premise.
With that said, would you bag your own groceries while the cashier is ringing you up? Shop at Aldi or lidl where you bag your own with your own bags?
ChavoDemierda@reddit
Nope, unless it's Aldi because that is the model. But I don't bag my groceries anyway. I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't bag their groceries at the store. Too much waste.

Self check out is fine at a store where I'm just scanning codes. But, fuck me running, I loathe self-check at a food joint.
They jacked up the prices AND reduced their work force by half, so now I have to fiddle-fuck around a giant touch screen trying to figure out how to add mustard or some shit.
I'd rather pay a disinterested teen or some poor overworked bastard to roll his eyes at me and call me a fat turd and give me only one ketchup packet. At least that dude is getting paid and providing a service, such as it is. And he's still better at navigating that freaking menu than I am.
We eat fast food maybe 3-4 times a month, but I no longer go to Dunkin Donuts, Taco Bell or McDonalds because of those damn kiosks. My kids don't even ask anymore so daddy don't have another of his "episodes."
BoringCanary7@reddit
I hate it, too. I cannot believe your Dunkin' has it! We still have cashiers.
SignificanceLow7234@reddit
Enjoy it while it lasts. As it happens, Dunkin's might be the worst kiosks.
First, if I'm in a DD, then I've probably missed breakfast and/or haven't my coffee yet.
Second, my natural state as already cranky, so we're off to a bad start without even trying.
Third, The menu navigation is counter-intuitive and doesn't include all the actual options. Doughnuts that are clearly sold out are there, while ones that in abundance are no where to be found.
I like the raised or yeast doughnuts. I can see them on the racks. There's dozens and dozens of them. All about six feet away. I can see about four employees all bustling and buzzing around the drive-thru window, skittering to the racks and loading bags with doughnuts.
I just want the one, but I can't find it in the menu.
FINALLY a human person sees my struggle and asks to help. I just want a maple raised doughnut, "but I can't find it in the options."
The reply (I swear to god): "Oh, yeah. Just hit the 'surprise me' button and then I'll ask what you want."
Uuuhhh...there's a "surprise me" option? Yup.
I do that. Pay.
He comes back three or four minutes later, asks what I want and I'm finally on ,y way out of there. Total time to get a doughnut: 15 minutes....having been the only customer in the joint.
This is what happened the first time I saw one of their kiosks about a year-and-a-half ago. I've been there two more times since, and it was the same.
We don't go to DD anymore, not that it will hurt them at all. Just preserving my own sanity.

Ringing up and bagging groceries is the purview of the employee/establishment, not the customer. If I'm expected to do the work, if I aid the establishment in their effort to cut staff and reduce costs, I should get the employee discount.
TheBeachLifeKing@reddit
Our local grocery store has two banks of self checkouts, probably 2 dozen all together.
It is so much faster to use these lanes. The line is usually slightly longer, but moves 5 times as fast. It also allows me to bag as I want to.

No employee wages, no costs of training employees, no need to worry about sick days, or turnover.
RVAblues@reddit
They don’t have to pay anyone to work the register for you.
Before, they would need one employee working the cash register for every checkout line, with a bagger floating between 2 or 3 registers.
Now they need no bagger and only one employee to handle 6 or 8 checkout stations. And that employee doesn’t handle any cash, so they can be trained quicker with less potential liability.
They do still have “full service” lines, but there are far fewer of them. And they fit 6 or 8 self checkout stations in the place that would have been occupied by only 3 full service lines.
So basically, by having us do the work, they are doubling sales capacity and paying far fewer employees.

We were road tripping this week and realized we forgot something. In typical GenX, we-straddled-the-analog-digital-veil-and-embraced-it-fashion, while driving, I looked up the item we needed online at the closest Walmart, mapped it, and we made the quick stop. (Item didn’t have a quick enough drive-up window so I would need to go inside)
Ripped to Aisle G3, grabbed the item and then proceeded to have a massive internal mental freakout when I saw that all the self-checkout stations were closed.
I dig ‘em. 😆
Key_Concentrate_5558@reddit
The last time I went through a register, I still had to bag my own groceries because I brought my own bags. Dude, if I have to bag it, I may as well boop it.
BoringCanary7@reddit
I can't stand having to bag my own groceries. That was not a thing in my youth.
Katy_Bar_the_Door@reddit
Always self checkout except the few stores who hire well for cashiers and/or don’t do self checkout (Trader Joes, Uniqlo).
Commander-of-ducks@reddit
I like them except when they're the only option. Last time I was at Walmart I had to use their self checkout. It wasn't working correctly, someone finally got it to work. Then on the way out the guy asks to see my receipt. I just said no and kept walking. Go to hell Walmart. If you're going to make me go through this hassle, don't have assume or soul there at the exit asking to look receipt.
BoringCanary7@reddit
100%. If you think I'm waiting for somebody to come and fix a mistake in my favor, you're mistaken.
lisep1969@reddit
I use the self checkout ALL the time. I don’t want to be interrogated about what I’m buying, what I’m making for dinner, if this brand is good, etc. I don’t want to deal with that shit, ever. I also got tired of the eye rolls from Marge the Boomer Cashier because I bring my own bags. (Which I wash every week so no they aren’t dirty.)
Plus I can scan and bag my full cart (yes, full) in less time that it takes the cashier to do it while she chats about nothing and inspects my stuff.
And weirdly all my cold stuff gets put together in a bag to help it stay cold and my bread never get smashed by my can of beans when I check myself out, unlike when I’m forced to deal with a cashier.
dee_lio@reddit
It's fine for one or two items. If I'm doing my weekly? Hells no. The company sure as hell didn't pass any cost savings along to me, so why am I bagging my own stuff?
DevilsChurn@reddit
I am a fervent advocate of self-check and have been for years. I started using them in the early 00s and just liked the convenience.
But what really converted me was when I moved to Canada in the mid-00s. Efficient customer service and general work ethic is a foreign concept there: I learned that in my own workplace, where I was shocked at how apathetic most of my co-workers were - but sweet Jaysus are they slow in checkout lines.
I remember moving back to the States and marvelling all over again how wonderfully fast and efficient regular checkouts were. Even so, when the lines were shorter at a self-check, I'd opt for that.
Now I live in a small town where privacy is at a premium and anonymity is essentially non-existent. I also have developed an inflammatory bowel disease that has caused me to gain weight because I can no longer eat a lot of the healthier foods I was used to (I would kill to be able to eat a salad without being in pain for a few days). I eat as healthy as I can, but I don't need people judging what I buy at the supermarket.
My only issue is that there is absolutely no way to buy beer or wine without a manual ID check. What I wouldn't give for a biometric ID that would allow me to not have to wait for a checker to squint at my driver's licence and manually enter the data.
(And no, alcohol doesn't make my IBD any worse. If anything, it makes being virtually homebound by the condition a little more bearable.)
TinkerMelle@reddit
I love them as long as I don't have a big cart because they're not set up for that. I live being able to organize my groceries into my reusable bags.
For the people saying they're eliminating jobs... Are they? I've noticed that my local Kohl's has looked cleaner and more organized since they added self checkouts. There's also people that have to do the shopping for you for the "buy online, pick up in store." The worst jobs I every had were cashier jobs because standing in one place for an entire shift is awful. Maybe they have the same amount of people working, or more, and everyone benefits.

Oriencor@reddit
Well, I worked self check after Covid and covering four registers instead of one is a PITA. I don’t like it from that perspective, and I’m happy to be back behind a desk again.
No_Gap_2700@reddit
I don't cook, so I don't buy groceries other than frozen pizzas or snacks to have on hand for when company comes by. (I live alone and watch what I eat) My typical cost of going to the store is about $100 for toiletries and cleaning supplies. Love the self checkout! I can be in and out in about 10- 15 minutes. The girlfriend uses shopping apps to have stuff delivered or picks up her order. She's always telling me how much better it is, until she places an order. Deliveries or pick ups are never on time. Anytime that I go with her to pick up her order, it takes at least 30 -45 minutes. I don't mind to go inside to get my things and be back home in 20 minutes versus it becoming an ordeal in order for it not to be an ordeal.
OldDudeOpinion@reddit
I like them, but I’m just the “fill-in” shopper….hubby is the shopper and refuses to use them because he wants to help employ the physical cashier.

Jef_Wheaton@reddit
I hate having to go to a cashier because, frankly, I DO A BETTER JOB. I'm faster, I bag my stuff the way I want it, and I don't have to talk to anyone.
Over Christmas, the store was PACKED, but they had extra people at the self-checks (instead of opening the 4 extra register lanes) "assisting" with checking out (trying to catch shoplifters).
I scanned everything, paid, then had to wait while the "assistant" fumbled around with my stuff and used 4 times more bags than I would have.
Just let ME do it.

I hate self checkout. I will wait in a line. I also hate going to Aldi and being rushed to bag my groceries.
Lowes foods is where it's at. You can buy a beer and shop and then you just push your cart up to the register and they take it from there.
Joe_Morningstar1@reddit
Hate them.
The reason self checkouts were put in was not for customers' convenience but an opportunity for stores to not hire, or fire, employees and make more money. On top of their price gauging.
I have used them but not happily. All grocery stores around here have self check out. Check out lanes lanes are understaffed and backed up. So using self checkout for your eight items is easier. But there are always, always, problems. Items won't scan. The belt won't register the scanned items' weight and shuts down until an employee has to run over and help, thus defeating the purpose.
I have read several articles over the last year that store studies on self check out have shown stores losing lots of money due to mistakes or flat out theft. And then those costs get shoved on the customers.
Reasonable-Fact-7871@reddit
I love them too! Always have. Even for big hauls. I’m a quick scanner and can even do produce quickly on my own. I always bag my own stuff in reusable bags anyway. I don’t have an issue chatting with a cashier, but I find self checkout so much more efficient.
Momofcats74@reddit
For the most part, I like self-check out. It allows me to bag my groceries the way that I want them done.
lucy_honeychurch88@reddit
I love it because I can pack the bags exactly how I want them. I don’t have to cringe as a bagger puts something heavy on top of fresh herbs. I can also make each bag the right weight for me to be able to carry it.
catnapspirit@reddit
Most of the time they're ok I suppose, but businesses need to realize the trade-off here is my effort for their speed. If the register is automated, no need to funnel everyone through two of them. Turn them all on and let me have the barest hiccup possible on my way out the door.
And I do not want to be yelled at by a damn robot. I will chew my arm off before going through Costco's automated registers for that very reason. Fuck that.
Oh, and one more improvement, I should be able to remove an item. WTactualF is the point in letting me checkout if I have to call over the one kid still allowed to have a job just because your stupid machine double beeped me on an item I accidentally hovered within a foot radius of the scanner.
And what's up with that too? One item I will swipe and swipe and then put it face down, put it face forward, try to smooth out the barcode, etc before finally the stupid machine recognizes the item. Then I swipe the next one beeps 10 inches out as I move the item towards the scanner and catches it a second time because I stare at it dumbfounded for a second.
Ok, take it back, I hate 'em..
poolshark-1@reddit
I love it. All my organic produce I can charge myself for non organic and ooops I forgot to scan that filet mignon or used the code for bananas for my pound of lobsters. I mean I was never trained or get paid to be their cashier, so sorry for my mistakes just an honest error I swear
Outrageous-Peanut-44@reddit
I’m an introverted non people person, so I love them.
Battleaxe1959@reddit
I prefer self checkout. The 3 issues I have with regular checkout is I like to use my own bags. Cashiers practically growl when they see the bags. Baggers don’t like them either and I will find canned goods in my my insulated/thermal bags, and ice cream in a bag with boxed goods.
Second, I bag things by where they go. Basement Freezer, upstairs fridge, kitchen cupboards, & pantry. That doesn’t fly with baggers (rightly so).
Third, I keep my bags light because I’m old and decrepit.
sambolino44@reddit
I don’t use the self checkout lane to avoid social contact; going to the grocery store is one of the few times I ever get to talk to anyone anymore. I use the self checkouts because I’m fussy about how to pack my bags, especially when I’m using my backpack.
-SQB-@reddit
Love 'em for small amounts of groceries, or when using a handscanner in the store itself, so I can bag my groceries right in my cart.

bodybycheeseburgers@reddit
Not a fan. If I’m doing the work, the store should be paying me with a discount.
adlittle@reddit
Absolutely pro. I bring my own bags and can ensure stuff is bagged evenly and tightly so that I have fewer to bring in. It also lets me bag things together for optimization, so all the cold stuff in a cooler bag, all the pantry stuff together, delicate stuff like bread and taco shells together, etc. Otherwise it's a pain in the ass to put away. I'll wait in a longer line so I can use self checkout.
DetectiveMakazian@reddit
Even better than self-checkout is scan-on-your-phone app.
* No line for the self-chekout (as there usually is at my grocery store)
* No handling the grocerys three times (into cart, to self checkout, back into cart)
* No problems scanning things; No waiting for the "self" checkout assistant come help.
* Know prices and total as you shop
* Total "checkout" time, about 30 seconds.
* Receipt for everything sent to me by email.
* Charge automatically to my designated bank-card.
* Don't have to carry cash or card, just my phone.
Grilled_Cheese10@reddit
I regularly used self scan at my grocery store until they made self-checkout so efficient that it's easier and faster to just do self checkout. I've used it a couple of times since, when the store was insane during the holidays. It's a nice option.

Cirrus-Stratus@reddit
Can we talk about the stores that stick a big video screen in your face showing you at the self check out machine?
No I don’t like that you are accusing me of being a shoplifter. I am paying customer and deserve respect while I perform labor that you should have provided.
No I don’t like that you are highlighting that you have cameras watching me. I know you have cameras all over the store but don’t need the video displays in my face.
No I don’t like being reminded that I look terrible while I ran out to the grocery store for a few items.
k8freed@reddit
Not a fan.
I hate waiting in line watching people scan their items as if they're moving through molasses. It is SO frustrating.
I hate that they're replacing human labor.
I hate how my local grocery chain has a support beam located in the center of the self-checkout area, so you can't see what kisok is available when you're waiting in line.
I hate how the robot lady barks at me for not putting an item in the bag when she stubbornly refuses to scan if for me!
Nope to the nopity nope.
idiotsbydesign@reddit
I've posted this a few times but our Walmart recently did a test with checking out on your phone. They still have the scan and go where you scan everything on your phone then go to checkout, scan a barcode & then just pay at the checkout. However the test was to do everything on your phone. Scan & bag as you go and at the end checkout on your phone. No check out stand required. You just walk out. I understand the issues with shrinkage but I loved it. It was the most convenient shopping experience I've ever had.

This is actually what I believe the powers that be want. They do not want us interacting with each other. BeBopBarr@reddit
Love them. Unfortunately most stores in my area have implemented a 15 item or less limit and that pisses me off. The reason being, they haven't added any more cashiers and I would rather scan a cart full by myself than wait in a line 20 deep.
Ianm1225@reddit
I like self checkout for when I have a few items, but I don't want it when I have a full shopping cart.
WhiskeyAndWhiskey97@reddit
Definitely con.
They take jobs away. Some of these cashiers are young people trying to earn some extra $ while they're in school, or senior citizens who can't make ends meet on their social security checks.
The scanners can be pretty finicky. More than once, I've scanned an item and then handed it to my husband to bag, and the machine locks up because I didn't put it on the belt.
On that note, unless you're only buying one or two items, it really is a two-person job - one person to scan and pay and another to bag everything.
And if you're buying liquor or tobacco, someone has to come over anyway to verify your ID, so what's the point?
DreadGrrl@reddit

What I don’t get is all the people who make a big deal about self checkouts, posting those “you’re not paying me to do your job” memes. Then go stand in a line and wait for someone to do your menial labor, if that gets you high.
potchie626@reddit
I agree 100%. The bagging part is a great bonus, and a thing I actually like about Aldi. They scan the items so fast that lines move quickly.
Amazon Fresh has smart carts that have you scan items as you put them in, which also allows bagging along the way.
SaltyDogBill@reddit
I never to go to self checkout. The store decreased employee headcount and passed the work they perform on to the consumer with no discount or compensation. If they offered me 5% off? Fine. But don’t fire a person and expect me to work for you for free.

beermoneymike@reddit
I look at my list and kinda already know before I get to the store. I worked at a register for over a decades worth of holidays so I'm pretty comfortable doing it myself. I use self checkout if I have a small amount or the cashier's lines are way longer. I go to a cashier if I have a lot of items or if I have coupons. I would love it if they provided a physical number pad but that's just my personal preference.

Depends on the number if items, also depends on if im buying a bunch of produce. 10 easy scan items, yeah for sure im using it. 10 different fruits or vegetables that i have to look up each item and weigh them, probably not.
GrandPriapus@reddit
My initial knee-jerk reaction was to hate them. Then after giving it some thought and trying them a few times my stance has changed. Sometimes in just want to get in and out of a store with as little human interaction as possible, and they’re great for that. Still, it bugs me that many places have self checkouts that are “card only” when I still use cash.
Billy-Joe-Bob-Boy@reddit
The grocer I go to installed self-checkout during COVID. They've been shut down since. I think losses went up and they decided it wasn't worth it. Personally, if they want me to do my own checkout, I think there should be a discount on the price. I mean, the shelved price assumes they are paying staff to do certain jobs. If they can reduce staff to save costs, they can reduce price to save my costs.
polishprince76@reddit
I get why I shouldn't like them....... but I just wanna buy my shit and get out. I'm usually faster on my own, and I'm not in the mood for chit-chat sometimes.
MrSurly@reddit
At my local CVS, they have two self-checkouts, and zero regular cashiers. The guy that is there will aggressively try to "help" you with the machine, coming over and pressing buttons and stuff.
Probably because of all the old(er) people at CVS getting prescriptions and whatnot can't really deal with screens.
I give him the sink eye and he leaves me alone now.
FadingOptimist-25@reddit

Love them...hate some of the people that use them.
Usually 6 stacked in a small space...family comes in with 4 kids and a loaded big cart...takes up too much space...kids blocking other machines and take forever to scan/bag/pack cart.
If they limited it to small carts/baskets I would be even more on board.
No_Goose_7390@reddit
It takes people's jobs
You're paying the same amount even though they are reducing labor costs
But sure, go ahead.
MissDisplaced@reddit
Pro: but limited use.
Great for small number of items. When they work it’s great!
But some of them are not setup correctly, and get too fussy with the item being placed in a certain spot. Or, the dummies who haven’t a clue how to use them and fiddlefuck around and take forever.
And definitely not the best for large cartloads of stuff.
GenXer1977@reddit
I love them now that they all seem to have gotten rid of the stupid feature where they weigh your groceries to determine if you put them all in the bagging area. That never worked correctly and it always took longer than just going in a regular line. But now it’s awesome. It’s just a bummer you can’t buy alcohol and use self check out.
manicimmoralpanic@reddit

SergeantBeavis@reddit
I despise self checkout. For one, they are piss poorly designed. 2nd, they are slower than they need to be. 3rd, if I screw up, I’m the one charged with shoplifting.
There is only one self checkout instance, that I’ve seen, that works perfectly. Circle K started putting in a self checkout system where I just put my stuff on the counter, a camera spots the item and rings it up. I just tap my card and leave. I’ve seen these at many Japanese kombinis but Circle K is the first implementation of this I’ve seen in the USA. If retail wanted to make self checkout really work well, they’d would put RFID tags on everything and let us walk out the door, having our goods automatically rung up and charged to our account as we leave. Walmart wanted to do this over a decade ago but there was a huge privacy uproar over it. Nevermind Wally World gets that same data whenever you use a credit card.
All that said, I would still prefer a human doing checkout. It’s one of the reasons I shop at Trader Joes all the time. I’ve never had a bad customer service experience there.
Oh, one more thing, be kind to your retail workers. It’s a shit job. They don’t need you making it worse. Additionally, I feel I get better service when I’m treating these kids with some kindness.
Relevant-Package-928@reddit
I've gotten used to them, finally. I still prefer the regular checkout.
threedogdad@reddit
the "I don't work for them" argument is so ridiculous to me. time is the most precious thing on this planet and I rarely have to deal with lines, can check myself out significantly faster than most cashiers, and I don't have to deal with any small talk.
you do you and wait for them to "work" for you... while I'm already well into my drive home.
French_Toast_Runner@reddit
I avoid them when possible. I actually like talking to cashiers and store employees. This is why I shop Trader Joe's. I also don't feel like going to a second job after working my job all day/week. I don't get a discount if I ring up my own groceries. The only ones who benefit are the corporations (and you are delulu if you actually believe they pass that savings on to you). It was one thing when it was simply an option for convenience and there were 1 or 2 kiosks but now it is the norm and there are almost no humans left. Not only does that creep me out but it has never been more convenient in my experience either.
kaz1976@reddit
I love them. They're a Godsend for people with social anxiety. There's usually no line and you don't have to wait for Betty who still insists on writing checks or counting out exact change.
Major-Discount5011@reddit
It's all a mindset, I guess. People feel that it's OK to shop, browse, pick out items, and walk around with said items in a cart. For some reason, they need someone to ring it in before they leave. Maybe people are lonely
Elegant-Sleep4042@reddit
Fuck that. Cut me a check if Im working.
Resident_Zebra933@reddit
I refuse to use them. If I wanted to check groceries, I'd work at a grocery store! If there are no available checkers, I leave my stuff in the cart and leave. I don't go very often.
Beatrix_Kitto@reddit
I don’t understand why people hate self check out. It’s all I use. Several grocery stores no longer employ enough staff to have baggers at each station so I end up bagging it myself as a bored store employee throws it down the belt at me. At least when I do it I have control of how I’m sending it down the belt.
And unless it’s an older person, the cashiers are unpleasant at best. They have zero customer service or people skills. I get that they hate their job, but I hated every shit job I had coming up too but still managed to be friendly.
PacRat48@reddit
I avoid self checkout unless it’s next to impossible. They put them in at Aldi and if I’m shopping with bags and not a cart, I’m not waiting 10 min to check out.
But at Pantera, my grocery store, or wherever else, a person is going to ring up my goods. Even Walmart when I must.
There are exceptions, but they are case by case
BeaverMartin@reddit
No, I don’t like them. I don’t get paid to work there and there’s clearly no reduction in costs being passed to consumers. As a parent of teenagers there are even less entry level jobs available which sucks as there’s way more competition for those jobs from adult retail workers who have to work multiple jobs.
whistlepig4life@reddit

If I'm only in there for a couple of items and there's a wait at the cashier lanes, I'll use the robo scanner. Otherwise, if it's a full shop, I'll go talk to the grouchy cashier instead so we can bitch about the weather together.
Own-Safe-4683@reddit
My local grocery store has 6 in one section and then right next to that they have 4. They often only open up the 4. I'm assuming it's because 4 is easier to manage than 6 or 10. But when I'm standing in a line 6 deep I can see the 4 that are open are not solving the problem. There is often only one traditional line open with at least 4 people with loaded carts waiting. The stores have drastically cut down on the number of employees and still are not serving their customers. It feels like a lose, lose way to go.
kellzone@reddit
Whatever option will get me out of the store faster at that particular moment, that's the one I'm taking. Most of the time that's self checkout.
JustRepeatAfterMe@reddit
I don’t really care. It’s nice to have the option. I’ve encountered just as many issues in self checkout as full service getting stuck behind people checking out too many items, having issues with rewards numbers and coupons, scanning too fast and freezing the machine, encountering the dreaded “please put item in the bagging area” alert, or the “your cart contains an age restricted item” alert, or any number of malfunctions that require assistance from a store employee. I just survey the landscape and make a call each time.
The thing I don’t get is classifying small talk as awkward bullshittery. I’m not anti-tech. I love tech and the convenience it offers us, but how hard is it to exchange a few pleasantries during the day and smile at someone? I find those brief moments pull me back from the trend of isolation everyone complains about. The antidote to isolation is community, built up by the feeling of being a functional member of society. Community creates and strengthens friendships, and reinforces a general sense of reciprocity. Taking a moment to look up, be polite to someone, nod and smile in a slightly less efficient check out line and comment on the weather or whatever is just one way to share and acknowledge our humanity with others. I hate the idea of looking at little old ladies with checkbooks as a pain in the ass.
Spiritual-Island4521@reddit
I don't mind them. I would definitely rather be able to do it myself than have to wait in a line.
Prestigious-Thing716@reddit
I like them along with ordering from Target ahead of time and having them bring it to my car. Less people I have to deal with and less of a chance of buying something I absolutely do not need.
TheTrueGoatMom@reddit
I ordered something online that was ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE, and upon going to the order pickup area, they brought it out and asked "Why did you just order ONE thing?" Didn't know I had to justify my order! It was a small item. I gave him a $3 tip, said "Thank you" and drove away. Yikes!
Prestigious-Thing716@reddit
Ha! I’ve never been judged. Wonder if they were having a bad day.
DeFiClark@reddit
Never if I can possibly avoid it.
I don’t work for the store. They should employ people to do the work.

BJ’s has express pay which I love. Just walk in, scan with your phone via the app, pay via apple pay and leave. No line, no machines, no waiting…
Apprehensive-End2124@reddit
Love the discount!
WiWook@reddit
The biggest con for me:
I was a cashier in college for a while. I still know some of the produce codes, and scan like a demon. They are too damned slow. Scan pause Put item on belt pause Look up item pause enter code pause ....
It takes me twice as long because I can't get into a rhythm, and if the item lands too far down the belt it doesn't register. If I am solo, and stuff doesn't move down the belt, I have to stop, bag a few things hope the transaction doesn't time out, etc.
Pro: 2 tries to weigh produce or it is free! garlic bulb doesn't register, oh well. 1 jalapeño is too light, must not cost anything...
UpstairsCommittee894@reddit
Can't stand them. I don't get paid to work for the store, so why should I do their job. If they offered an employee discount maybe I wouldn't be upset about that.
I also hate how every time i've used one something goes wrong, so I have to wait for an employee to come over and cash me out. Then you get treated like a criminal and they want to recheck everything by looking at a receipt. The only one I like is sams club shop and go. You scan with your phone slide a button and leave.
Easy_Key5944@reddit
There are some exposes out there about the way stores surveil the self checkouts and prosecute people who, in many cases, made an honest mistake.
The irony is that they do this QC check with humans, who they pay, like they used to pay cashiers. Only now they're paying people solely to ruin people's lives for making a mistake.
I'll never use the self checkout again. Not worth the risk.
mlvalentine@reddit
IDK. It's weird I can go through an entire day with no human interaction.
siaslburqe@reddit
My first job was a cashier back when we had union representation. Scabs go back to work when the company cooks an employee to death. They should have burned Walmart down. This type of blase attitude, well, I didn't get cooked, and now I get to do a job instead of accidental human contact with a stranger, while very Gen X, is being exploited for profit.
Nofanta@reddit
I love it. I can always get it done faster than the typically disinterested employee.
STGItsMe@reddit
Part of me is like “I’m not on the payroll, why the fuck would I work here?” but sometimes it’s the fastest way to get my stuff paid for and out of the store.
squeakybeak@reddit
Yeah it’s convenient but it annoys me that it’s taken someone’s job and the price I’m paying hasn’t gone down despite the cost efficiencies of not having employed someone. So basically the company is making more money and I’m now doing the work.
FabAmy@reddit
I like them because I'm single and live alone, so I never have a ton to buy. It's much quicker, and I can bag my items the way I want.
LunaLovegood00@reddit
I like them because I can get in and out pretty quickly. In true GenX fashion, I think there should be a test before you’re allowed to use them. Not competent? Go through the regular line with the rest of the general population 😁
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
Oddly, gen x have adapted to them better than boomers or younger generations. Boomers it's kinda understandable, but mills and z's and whatever seem more lost than they do
LunaLovegood00@reddit
That’s interesting. I wonder why. My partner is an elder millennial and he’s good with them but he acts more GenX than I do. My kids are Z and they’re good as well but I trained them. Maybe some are less independent and want the personal assistance/personal touch
Chance_Put_1850@reddit
I’ll only use self-checkout if I have 1 or 2 items and the device is free at the moment I walk up. Other than that, seems just as easy to use a cashier.
Peaceful-Spirit9@reddit
Love them
sickboy6_5@reddit
I used to like them, but then stores started shutting down the manned cashiers and forcing everyone to self checkout. Now it's a pain waiting for someone to figure out (for the 100th time) how to scan something. Or to wait for the non-present manned person to come over and correct something.
For most of last year, the closest grocery store to my house routinely had 1 manned cashier line, 7 empty cashier lines and 4 self checkout stations.

Absolutely hate them. I love employment so obviously self checking is stupid.
CaptainMorgan699@reddit
I actually like them. I can bag my stuff the way I want, without the weird conversation from a cashier. It also gets me out of the store faster. One thing I have learned from my indepence from cashiers. If you buy a lot of produce, peel one of the stickers off whatever you're buying and put it on the outside of the bag to scan. Saves a ton of time from trying to scan through a bag or using the "search" feature
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
I like that! Thanks for the tip
Elegant-Phone7388@reddit
The best is the Sam's Club app. You scan all your items in the app, click to pay, and walk out. No lines, no dealing with other people, I love it. I wish more stores had it
cua@reddit
Meijer has this too, though you still have to go to a kiosk to do the final payment. It's pretty great.
rockpaperscissors67@reddit
I use self check out as often as I can. I worked as a cashier so I'm quick and I organize stuff in my basket. I just get really annoyed when something doesn't ring up right and I have to wait for the self check out monitor to mosey over and fix it.
JJQuantum@reddit
This may sound uppity but all too often the people that are handling the full service check out lines are not the best and brightest or, if they are, they are bored at a non-challenging job and don’t give a rat’s ass as a result. I’m not saying everyone is but it’s a pretty big portion. As a result I can check myself out much more quickly than they can. I do think the stores save money on self check out so offering a discount to do it would be the right thing to do, not that we’ll ever see that.
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
My local Kroger, there's 2 or 3 who could do the job blindfolded with one arm tied behind their backs , and too many who shouldn't be near shiny objects
jaxbravesfan@reddit
I like them at the hardware store when I’m just running in to get one or two things. I hate them, and refuse to use them, at the grocery store. I’ve already worked my job for the day, why am I going to work theirs? I had a cashier look at me like I was crazy a few months ago when the bagger walked off and she said, “He’s not going to be back for a while, so you might want to bag those.” I looked at her and asked, “When’s the Christmas party?” She was confused. I said, “If I’m going to work here, I’m dang sure coming to the Christmas party.”
External-Dude779@reddit
Love it and don't have to wait for grandma to pull out the checkbook, ask for a pen and then take 5 minutes filling it out

They are okay except in convenience stores.
Meep42@reddit
I hate self check out…I feel rushed and possibly judged for how I scan and bag things, yes I know it’s all me.
My local big grocery store here in Italy has a scanner thing you can check out and you can scan and bag as you go…now THAT I like. You get to the kiosks at the end and scan your scanner in and pay. No extra unloading, everything is all bagged up. (Or not, as I’ve seen folks bag/box their things at the exit or at their cars. Either way, it’s all at your pace.)
No_Board6192@reddit
I like it because I don’t have to talk to anyone. The only time I don’t like it is when people are checking out huge orders. I feel like self check out should have a 10 item limit just to keep things moving. Just my opinion :)
lesters_sock_puppet@reddit
When I go to a regular checkout lane in a store that has self checkouts, I always let the cashier know that I appreciate being served by a professional.
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
Especially after covid, but I've always tried to thank cashier's ( including the person operating the sco area ) and tell them I appreciate them.
Ironically, at my local Kroger I get more hugs and handshakes from employees than I sometimes know what to do with. Like even ones I rarely interact with
SageObserver@reddit
They used to be a time saver so I didn’t have to stand in line. Now they are usually busy and the cashiers are empty. And for some reason the self checkout scanners have gotten impossible. “Please put item in bag”. I DID!!!
GeneralPatten@reddit
I'm finding that the self checkout lines are long and backed up because so many people are going through simply out of habit, while the cashier lines are empty. I always check the cashiered line first now.
brandondash@reddit
For me personally speed is WAY more important than convenience. Self-Checkout for any haul under \~15 items. More than that and I go to a cashier because there is nothing more annoying that somebody in self checkout doing their entire weekly trip and slowing everybody down.
ngraham888@reddit
I have learned that I would indeed have been a really great grocery store checkout person in an alternate life… along with all of the other 17 year olds that would eternally be my co workers. Sarcasm aside, extraordinary circumstances have to intervene in order for me to have someone else check me out at the grocery now. Just the bagging decisions alone get me pretty worked up when I let someone else check me out.
jsharr2@reddit
So true…sometimes I’ll take matters into my own hands and start bagging while the cashier is still scanning items. Can get a little weird/awkward.
TheOtherElbieKay@reddit
Fine for a low number of items. A nightmare for large hauls like the weekly family grocery shop.
Also those machines at CVS that weigh everything drive me crazy.
And they should all be silent. I usually switch to Spanish. I know a little Spanish from high school, so the sounds are familiar, but I have very limited vocabulary so I find it easier to tune out. The other option is noise cancelling AirPods.
imadork1970@reddit

Accurate_Weather_211@reddit
If the cost of the groceries reflect a decent savings, then fine. If it's still average or higher prices, it's a no for me. I'm not an employee of the grocer. If I'm expected to self-check and bag my own groceries, I expect to save a lot of money.
elGranPandebono@reddit
Despise them. I haven't been to my local Walmart in 6 months. The last time I went they only had one register open, and half of the self checkout registers were closed. Then the attendant in the self checkout area told me I was using the wrong register (I had over twenty items). I was so annoyed that I actually pulled a Karen and asked to speak to the manager. She was very gracious, but informed me that their hands were tied and that how many registers are open is determined by corporate depending on the amount of traffic in the store. Knowing that, I will happily never shop there again. Not worth my time to be purposely aggravated by their business model.
inthewind7687@reddit
Lowe’s/Home Depot. I like them. Grocery stores, no thanks. I usually have way too much stuff to fit on that little shelf and doing a transfer method by using my cart just makes me forget what I scanned. I’m not in that state of mind at the grocery store. Plus if I’m doing it myself, how about a 5% discount or something?
Spiritual-Eye-2910@reddit
I hate them, if am supposed to do someone's job I should get a discount when using self checkout.

BottleAgreeable7981@reddit
I tend to shop only at stores with self checkout. I was a grocery bagger and cashier in my younger days and can get through my order faster than a regular checkstand, even with the plastic bag ban.
bcn13765@reddit
Self checkout is a profit point for all these companies. Scan and bag my groceries if you want my money.
412_15101@reddit
I used to be a cashier so I prefer the self check out options. Now there are times I use the humans. If it’s super slow and they’re just standing there, if I get gift cards or something so awkward/expensive that will require human intervention anyway.
I will be mad at those who do massive carts or use the self checkout to keep their kids busy swiping which slows the whole process down. That’s what the toy grocery store is for not the real place.
I have also stood on long lines at Walmart and did the scan and go so that by time I make a register I can just scan the QR code and book it out of there.
Honestly I’d rather more people on the floor to help with unlocking cabinets, at the fitting rooms, getting product from the high shelf or directing you to where an item is now being stocked (since they move shit every other month)
mrspalmieri@reddit
I definitely prefer going to a cashier. Only time I do self checkout is when the 1 lane operated by a cashier has a super long line. I don't like contributing to making someone's job obsolete
Sunflower971@reddit
For small purchases they are great. Where I absolutely hated mandatory self checkout and am now refusing to shop? Our local Ikea! I had furniture and several smaller items, no conveyor belt to put anything on and also awkward due to the mix of sizes. There was a person there "to help" that was the poster child for "I'm here to help - but don't bother me for anything ever". I will not be back.

I have a not very groundbreaking theory that the less we are forced to interact with each other, the more hostile we all are towards each other and maybe we need MORE face to face and not less, even if less is more comfortable and convenient.
While I don't typically mind self-check and I love the convenience of scan and go, I think we should probably go back to checking out and ordering food face to face with real humans. I dream of a fully staffed department store with an actual person behind every counter.
RScottyL@reddit

I prefer anyplace I can do self check out. I am not interested in talking to people. I just want to get what I need to get and get out.
My brother absolutely despises self check out and will often pick a fight with a manager at any location as to why all the check stands, aren’t open with permanent employees. His favorite target is usually Costco of late.
It is entertaining to watch as I walk out the door with self checked out items and get in my car and drive away while he continues to waste his time but to each their own.
ststaro@reddit
I lean towards they need to give me a discount for employing my services. That said, I will use them if I am just grabbing a 6pack. Course it defeats the purpose as I still need a cashier to okay my transaction
tarbinator@reddit
I'm neutral. Depends on the situation.
bradorme77@reddit
This absolutely depends on the self scanner. If it's one that validates based on weight that is an absolute no go for me they are absolutely the worst. The ones that have a good sized area for stuff and aren't doing the weight check I am all for in small to medium runs. But for large runs I prefer a checker and I am happy to assist bagging always.
fyretech@reddit

I’d be more a fan of self-checkout if I could self-verify I’m of age to buy alcohol. (My state sells beer and wine at grocery stores).
Waiting for the one clerk overseeing a bank of self-checkout lanes to come look at my bald head and grey beard and scam their card and type in a date negates any time savings I’d get.
That poor one clerk is usually tied up with replacing receipt tapes or helping somebody not qualified to self-check.
KCcoffeegeek@reddit
I generally don’t mind it for the same reasons as OP. I had to pop into the store for goat cheese recently and the grocery I went to had removed all their self cashiers. They put a broccoli head on the express lane and he had pretty obvious hyperactivity so he’s throwing it in the air, passing it back and forth between his hands, rolling it up and down the ramp all the while “what is this what’s it for what’re you doing with it why does it exist” and it was intense. I just wanted my overpriced log of goat cheese so I could make my overpriced Basque cheesecake. LOL sweet kid but I didn’t want to have to answer 100 questions. I buy very few foods in boxes, so pretty much anything from the produce department absolutely mysteries the zoomers working there.
My all time favorite though happened around the holidays. I got in a lane with two zoomers, both seemed like they took one too many mood depressants. One broccoli head, one weed whacker mullet. Both big huge kids that looked like they could lift a car each, which didn’t help the scene. The woman in front of me was buying some tomatillos and I already knew I f’d up picking this lane but I figured I would ride it out.
Broccoli head picks up the tomatillos and stares at them FOREVER. Like for a minute and finally asks, “um, like, what is this?” She says “a vegetable called a tomatillo.” He presses some buttons and rings it up as like heirloom tomatoes so they rang up super expensive. Here we go, I thought. “She says, no those range up way too expensive, they’re on sale and should only be a few dollars.”
Broccoli head turns to mullet, “do you know what this is?” Mullet says “I think like green tomatoes.” Broccoli head, “um green tomatoes aren’t in here.” So mullet suggests “just ring them up as another tomato.” She says, “no, they’re on sale and I don’t want to overpay.” They asked her if she knows the code for them. Nope. This goes on and on for like 5 minutes no exaggeration. Finally she says “can one of you go to that display right over there and figure it out?” Finally mullet leaves to go stare at the display for a while.
Manager finally comes over and in two seconds enters the correct code, rings her out. They hand her all her bags. I had like two items and it takes forever to get me out. As I’m paying with my credit card mullets comes back and broccoli head looks in front of him and pulls a back up from the bagging area and says “uh oh” while helplessly holding the bag. Mullet, “what?” Broccoli head “um, this is those tomatoes that one lady wanted.” Rather than snatch them and run to the parking lot to try to catch her, mullet shrugged and went, “well, maybe she,ll come back for them.” I rushed out to the lot to see if I could spot her, no luck. I hoped for those kids’ sake she didn’t come back because she was going to be furious if she did. LOL and I just couldn’t stop thinking of how ultra pissed she was going to be after all that and then get home and not have the one thing she really needed.
WarPotential7349@reddit
Love them. I'm quite fast and don't have to deal with anyone at the register judging what I eat.
I'm an obligate vegetarian due to bowel issues, and for some reason, people want to argue this with me. I'm not here to justify my veggie burgers to the checker, bagger, and any customers who might overhear. I don't want to talk to someone about making better life choices. I don't want anyone to call my mother to "let her know I'm starving myself after everything she's done for me," I just wanna give you money and go home with my veggie ch'k-quen n'ugg-ettes.
Also, my mother thinks I'm super fat and would be thrilled if I started starving myself, so get all the way out my life.

I think everywhere should have the self checkout option. I don't look at it as me doing someone else's job.

I worked in a grocery store back in the late 20th Century and was trained how to pack a bag and scan efficiently. Self checkout is fine when you have a few items. For more than that, it is a pain in the ass.

I think it's crap to do work that should be the store's but not having to wait in line is a fair trade off. Now that all goes out the window when Walmart decides to limit how much you can bring through self checkout and you're tossed back into the checkout line like cattle or they only have half the SCO registers open cause they won't task enough staff to watch the area.
PaduWanKenobi@reddit
Pro: no chit chat, quick
Con: the bagging area is small so can't shop much, finding codes for produce can take awhile, sometimes scanning can go awry and have to wait for reset

My local Home Depot is almost entirely self checkout but they have cashiers there to help you; why not just open up a lane for the cashier to check people out at?
ultimate_ed@reddit
It's the killer app for Sam's Club - always use it there. For grocery shopping, if I've got a small order, I'll use the self check. For a full load, the layout of the self checkout doesn't really work well, so I'll stand in the cashier line.
All these folks with the "I don't work for the store" and "they're destroying jobs" are bringing some real Boomer energy to this thread.
WarZone2028@reddit
I hate them, it represents further dehumanization of retail workers.
gogozrx@reddit
it depends on whether or not I need plastic bags for kitty poop. If I do, self checkout, and click "no bags." If not, manned checkout and paper bags.
Lady_Gator_2027@reddit
If I'm not feeling well, I use sco. I don't want people to think I'll get them sick.
Incognito4771@reddit
I love them, they generally require the least amount of human interaction possible in a store 💕
Zipstser257@reddit
I love them, even when busy it’s so much quicker. I stick to the max amount of items if stated, which is usually 15. A lot of people go through with way more than the max which can create a long line to wait in. My local grocery store, Winco, has been enforcing the max limit in the self checkout area for about two months now making the process much more efficient. If stores had more cashiers open though I’d probably opt for those lines instead. But it seems like the norm these days is having two cashier checked lines open and the rest self checkout. So the stores are definitely pushing more shoppers to self checkout instead of cashier lines.
Dangerous_Spring5030@reddit
I love it because at most places, it’s faster than waiting in line anyway. These days they will only have one line, maybe 2 with a cashier who does everything. Scan and bagging unless you want to bag your own as well, which if I have to do that, I might as well do self checkout. I will NOT however, be one of these people who has 35 groceries and takes forever. Stopping and looking at their phone, taking their sweet ass time. I don’t want someone who just wants their 2 items to wait 15 minutes.
mike___mc@reddit
Pro, but only so I can bag it myself.
I’ve never really had an issue with avoiding small talk at the store. Teenage cashiers don’t want to talk any more than I do.
mushy-71@reddit
My husband always says if you want to get out of the store fast and not make small talk go to the register with the youngest person, preferably a teenager, they want you out of there as fast as you want to be out of there! lol!
ZweitenMal@reddit
They don’t know how to bag anymore anyway.
Turbulent_Tale6497@reddit
Depends. Am i buying a pack of gum? Yes. Cart full of groceries? No.
mushy-71@reddit
Love them! Don’t have to make small talk. Scan it! Bag how I want it bagged without being a “Karen”. In and out.
DaniiMinoguh@reddit
I take 2 trips from car to store if I have a lot to get, so that I can use the self check.
TheJokersChild@reddit
I almost literally punched one out one time: just non-stop "Remove your item from the bagging area." "Please move your item to the bagging area." "You have an unpaid item in the bagging area." This item doesn't scan. That item has no price and isn't in the system. Bitch, just let me DO this! You have doubts about me stealing, have the guy at the door check me like they do at Costco.
Just-aMidwestGuy@reddit
I'd much rather do self checkout. And some stores, that's your only option anymore. I have some friends who have said they'll never shop at stores that only offer self checkout. Whatever. Give me self checkout any day.
Electrical-Low-5351@reddit
I love them my wife hates them
moderngulls@reddit
Con. I like the corny conversations with the checkout person, studies show that these little convos are good for people's mental health. Self checkout has turned buying stuff into a dehumanized brush with tech support + security guards.
Dizzy_Bug8248@reddit
I hate it. Something always goes wrong
MinusGovernment@reddit
I don't hate them but I hate places like 5 Below that force you to use them. I also hate that some of them don't accept cash working a job that I get cash every day so I mostly use cash. Really use them if I have a small basket of stuff or less.
GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit
Love them...prefer it over cashier's.
Moonsmom181@reddit
Love them when there’s no wait and I have a reasonable amount of items.
muscadon@reddit
I live in France now, and I haven't figured out how to use the self-checkouts yet, so I always utilize a cashier, plus it helps me integrate and continue to improve my shoddy French. The cashiers are always so pleasant and friendly too. Win/win!
ZweitenMal@reddit
Love them. I don’t want to talk to anyone.

Pro. 99% of the time, it's faster. That 1% goes to this past Valentine's Day when everyone else was also pro self check.
I'm also a fan of pickup when I know the in store experience is going to be crazy and I have a larger order.
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
My wife and I went through that too on Hallmark card day

I love them.

Love it, just hate the line at Walmart door to leave out. They need a few more people checking receipts
MehX73@reddit
Anytime I can get in and out of a store without talking to people I don't want to talk to is a plus!
I did regular check out last week. The cashier took so long to ring up the people in front of me because they had cute kids. She literally stopped ringing things up to talk to little kids who started telling a story. We all know how long that takes. Then it was my turn and she started chatting with me . She could not scan and talk at the same time. It was torture. People behind me noped out and left.
iggyomega@reddit
I am for it as long as the register is working properly. Every once in a while, I have that register that isn’t picking up on the fact that I put my item in my bag/on the belt, etc and attempts to override it result in assistance needed. At that point, no. I want less hassle, not more.
KitchenWitch021@reddit
Pro..but if I have a huge cart full of stuff (who am I kidding, that doesn’t happen ever) then going through a regular line is easier.
Usually I carry my reusable bag in, throw in some crap I want, go check it out and out I go.
