Alright, what's in the "MISC" folder, son?
Cjdj1985@reddit (OP)
Mostly drivers and certificate updates so I can force ie to load websites lol

That's not what your mother said last week. We'll talk about this later when you're ungrounded.

I’ve done what I can to get an old CRT. But honestly, some older LCD’s get the job done just fine and weigh 60 less pounds.

Yeah it was a pain in the ass walking my eMac up 2 flights of stairs
Benson879@reddit
Also would argue that XP just feels more “right” running with an LCD to begin with
TrannosaurusRegina@reddit
How?!
Lukeno94@reddit
Because by about 2004 or 2005, TFTs were the default for almost all new purchases, and CRTs were clearly on their way out.
eestionreddit@reddit
LCDs and CRTs were being sold concurrently at that time, and I think many gamers would've still opted for a CRT.
TrannosaurusRegina@reddit
Windows XP came out in 2001.
I guess it’s possible that LCDs started becoming popular for new PCs then, though I certainly didn’t see them overtake the majority in actual use until many years later. At home, we used our CRT until it wore out in 2012, and I still use a beautiful IBM CRT with my PC!
Lukeno94@reddit
XP came out in 2001, yes, but many people would still use 9x in the home for a couple of years after that, and even then many wouldn't leave XP behind until 7 was fully established - or even until they finally pulled support. The majority of people are probably more likely to associate TFTs with XP than CRTs, I would say - even if that isn't necessarily the actual reality they lived; I know in my case I never did use a TFT with an XP machine back in the day in my house, but almost all of the school PCs I used were XP and TFT (in my case I swapped to Vista quite early on at home and ran 98 quite late into its life cycle, so had a much shorter XP span than most).
Benson879@reddit
Feels like LCD/thinner monitors started to take over in the early ish 2000’s.
My family personally still had a 98 until like 06-07 or so running a CRT and, then went LCD as soon as they upgraded.
Benson879@reddit
Do keep in mind that XP really stayed a primary operating system all the way through 2010 or so. A lot of people were running XP in 05-08 where LCD began to really take over completely. They were starting to come up in the early 2000’s as well.
TechIoT@reddit
I feel that.....I had to get mine out of an attic, it's never been anywhere near one since lol
eestionreddit@reddit
As a laptop main, my issue with LCDs is scaling, as you're often switching resolutions if you want to game.

Tell us about your Model M
Cjdj1985@reddit (OP)
It’s a Lexmark made model M from may 1994
cdmidi@reddit
Have you had it for a bit? Is it your daily driver?
Cjdj1985@reddit (OP)
Yes about 3 years now
duiwksnsb@reddit
Nothing like it. I recently cleaned up my own that had been neglected for too long.
Why did I ever stop using this thing?

This is a 2 year old view sonic VA951S , even for newer stuff I don’t use 16:9 , my 90s MAG innovision CRT is in storage and I think the vga port needs re-soldering after about 15 minutes of use. It starts flashing every known color in the universe until you turn it off.
