5070 ti or 7900 xt for a new build?

I’m planning my first build and getting a bit overwhelmed with picking a GPU. My original desire was a 4070 ti super but it appears they don’t exist anymore.
With the 50xx coming out I’m hearing stories of them melting and such and feeling a bit worried about a potential house fire. Plus spending a grand on a card hurts my head to a degree. Plus hunting for one and constantly refreshing Best Buy and hoping I get luck sounds like hell.
Meanwhile a quick search showed the 7900 available pretty readily and seems to have the amount of VRAM I wanted. Plus it’s a few hundred cheaper. But… I’ll fully admit I’m a bit of a slut for ray tracing. Plus a lot of the games I like have special Nividia gimmicks.
I mostly play single player action adventure games. Alan Wake 2. Assassins creed. Total War. Dragon Age

You don't need 20GB VRAM. All AAA titles never reach over 12GB VRAM. AMD wants you to think that is legit.. So they will go to 64GB VRAM in 2026+. It does not make their actual GPU faster. AMD can't counter DLSS, which is real and is key to all of the games you mention.
NotGonnaComeBackBsb@reddit
In VR games (MSFS, DCS, etc.), 16GB of VRAM is not enough.
adeezl@reddit
Yeah, I think it is. I played most of the AAA titles on a Legion laptop 3080 16GB from 2021 without issues years ago. They don't make VR games anymore so you're good.
NotGonnaComeBackBsb@reddit
I don't know, I'm just sharing what I've heard from flight simmers who use 8K VR headsets in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and Digital Combat Simulator. Depending on the plane model, the textures are so heavy, the VRAM becomes the bottleneck.
But that can also be chalked down to poor optimization sometimes.
wildcat002@reddit
Avatar and James Bond go over 16gb
you are not informed much and this vram requirements will just get worse and worse
adeezl@reddit
Bond isn't even out for 5 months (if it doesn't get delayed like most), and avatar certainly doesn't use over 12gb of RAM on my system. Can you share a screenshot of your system and settings using over 16gb? VRAM doesn't make your GPU faster.
Also, you must not be "informed much" as the specs were incorrect, and corrected by IO for 007 first light. https://www.engadget.com/gaming/007-first-light-dev-admits-it-messed-up-pc-specs-announcement-143000670.html
wildcat002@reddit
i can't because i don't have those games but i saw a video on youtube that it uses 17gb at 4k. So 12 is definitely not good for the future
adeezl@reddit
I think it will be just fine for at least 3 years out, since without a 5080/90 people aren't playing stable framerates at native 4k. Avatar was not optimized very well.
wildcat002@reddit
it is not about speed, it is about stability! it prevents crashes and 2fps drops
Anyways, i just got 16gb card so i am safe now and goodluck with 12gb or less. Take care

Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
dont go for the 7900xt u will get alot of crashes later on if you get it
NotGonnaComeBackBsb@reddit
I may be lucky, but I'm not having that many random crash with my Sapphire Pulse 7900XT (been using it since July 2023).
The worst was when I played Elden Ring in 2024 (in 500 hours of game play, I had 3 or 4 crashes while exploring), but now there's no crash anymore.
Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
Yeah you got lucky there was a problem with my 9700xt apparently when i sent it back i only owned it for 1 year lol amd is so bad imo i love nvidia never had any problems with them
wildcat002@reddit
please explain? i have a lot of crashes on nvidia because of low vram already
this 20gb will actually allow ultra texture settings to be used without the instant crash
Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
Well i got 20gb on my 7900xt when im playing games or just watching yt on google Chrome it just crashes randomly idk why it does it ive even contacted amd and they said that its normal with that cars but ive seen other ppl haveing my problem too on other amd cards so I think its something with amd
wildcat002@reddit
omg so they still have bad drivers! Thanks for the replay!
Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
yeah they still havent fixed it and np glad to help another im gona get my self the 5070ti
wildcat002@reddit
it is crazy how they sell 5070ti for 1100 euros at my place but i could find 7900xt for 550! I only see two options for me and it is used 3090 or 5060ti 16gb. Because other cards are very expensive. It is just so sad how 20gb card is still crashing 😥
Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
yeah i recommend nvidia all day it has been more frequent with crashes now its everyday for me now and ive done DDU and other stuff nothing is helping so i dont recommend AMD at all There CPU's are good but the GPU's are trash
wildcat002@reddit
Did you tried to power limit it or under clock it? I also read that the card is power hungry and if you don't have good enough psu, it can crash games
Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
I got a 1200w psu and I use 2 never 1 lol, i did under voltade and it still dident work sadly
wildcat002@reddit
Damn! Thanks for the info, it means a lot to my decision
Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
yeah ofc not a problem i just order my self a 5080 im very happy about it
wildcat002@reddit
Because of the price difference, i got amd card anyway. My computer could not handle 7900xt (it has 750w) but 7800xt does not have any crashing in the games. I picked the stable 25.9.1 driver imidietley. It is actually much more stable than low vram Nvidia card which was crashing like crazy on ultra settings
wildcat002@reddit
Guess what? i got amd card anyway 😥 but because of how insane gpu prices are right now - 649 euros for 5060ti!! 7900xt was sold but i was lucky to get 7800xt at the normal price. I paid 420 and it has 2.5 years of warranty. So far, the card is working really well but it is my first day and i hope it stays like this. I tried hogwarts on ultra with all RT options enabled, last of us part two and avengers 2020 on 4k. All games have over 60 fps which is amazing to me and i am really happy except about the Ferrari sound it makes to cool the card. I also did some configurations like turning on smart access memory and then connecting it to my ryzen processor, found the most stable driver etc. It pulls 300w, even if it says 260 and i did not overclock the card or did any tunings. So if this one pulls 300 then i believe 7900xt can probably spike to 400 for few seconds which causes crashing.
calundle93@reddit
I am also dealing with random crashes or black screen boots on my 7900XT.
Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
dang sad to hear, you should get a new card if u dont mind the crashes or black screens then keep it but otherwise return it if you can
calundle93@reddit
It's a couple years old, so I'm stuck with it. It works more than it doesn't but I've been eyeballing a 5070ti.
Ok_Maximum6219@reddit
yeah same here im returning my card today the 7900xt to get the 5070ti or a 5080
Elitefuture@reddit
5070 ti if you can get it from a store not from a scalper. $750-$900 seems fair for it.
7900 xt if you can get it for $600, but the 9070 xt would be a direct upgrade for HOPEFULLY the same price.
One_Fun_4592@reddit
Not sure how you're getting 9070 being an upgrade when we literally know NOTHING about it.
wildcat002@reddit
upgrade - loses 4gb of vram
Elitefuture@reddit
Other than taking AMD's own word and slides that were released to media from AMD prior to the event then was pulled from the main slides in CES. But they were directly from AMD and allowed the media to still show it.
They stated that the 9070 xt would be around the 7900 xt while talking about their rebranding. If it's the same price + same raster, then the better rt + better ai for fsr4 are just upgrades.
Active-Quarter-4197@reddit
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/msi-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-ventus-3x/34.html
5070 ti = 7900 xtx in raster
with rt the 5070 ti is alot better than the 7900 xtx and xt
wildcat002@reddit
for me
more vram=better
i don't trust it, not even 5080 framegen scam
you will see when this nvidia cards get out of vram and Then start crashing like crazy! even if they feel faster with dlss on, that won't help them on ultra settings
One_Fun_4592@reddit
It literally in no way shape or form is better than the xtx. The xtx blows it out of the water.
b0rnlivedie@reddit
so, did you eat your words yet? because reviews are out and the 5070 Ti is miles ahead the XTX in RT and beats it at raster in some games, while being equally performant in others.
Revolutionary-Put766@reddit
Ray Tracing is literally almost non viable and to pay a premium for that is asinine. The 7900XTX destroys the 5070ti in every aspect especially with 24GB of Vram.
Puzzleheaded-Web-170@reddit
Gta 6 begs to differ, pshh amd loyalists!
Various_Alps_4675@reddit
Clearly ur the rtx 3060 warrior🤣
Revolutionary-Put766@reddit
I'm going back to this when it drops because if you think that a single game makes cards obsolete, you're in a surprise. Im not a loyalist by any means, I just build PC'S so I know what Im talking about. It sounds like u might be a Nvidia loyalist, the nerv..
Party-Ad-2320@reddit
I know some folks may go "OH GAWD TEH NECROPOSTINGGG", but since I came across this randomly on google, someone else could as well. And so I'll say that I like the 5070 ti. It's done a decent job. Be careful not to blow almost a grand with tax and up charge and stuff, but if a person can snag one for msrp, then it's a decent gpu.
Alt-456@reddit
Dude I am about to buy a new pc and was looking for info on these exact two cards, particularly the issues with the 50 series, how true is that stuff. Thank you so much for this comment haha, think I’ll go for the 5070ti then!
Party-Ad-2320@reddit
Ive had no issues, I went for the one I could grab for msrp and ive been happy with it. There's even extra head room via msi afterburner if you wanna use it. And for games like oblivion remastered that allow for multi frame gen, it's great. I add a tiny bit of motion blur and it feels like free frames. Shooters are another story ive heard but also a lotta shooters are better optimized than OR. And with a healthy OC, some multi frame gen, and reasonable spec expectations, you can even dabble with 4k gaming, which wasn't really an option with my 4060.
MedicatedBaracuda@reddit
I cant even find 7900xt. So im goin with 5070ti
Wonderful_Gap1374@reddit
This comment is gonna age like milk.
Puzzleheaded-Web-170@reddit
Yes, yes your comment did
Wonderful_Gap1374@reddit
I mean it didn’t really. It was practically impossible to find when released. So he probably had to wait anyway. Also I don’t think that’s what that comment originally said.
Equivalent-Rate849@reddit
I own a 5070 Ti but I will say 7900 Xt and XTX have luxury amount of VRAM
Massive_Analyst1011@reddit
Sounds to me like you're team green at least for now. I just got the 7800 xt and it didnt feel right "to me" i returned it and got a 4070 instead and am much happier. Think you're the only one who can decide. Everyone here including me is biased.
BugAutomatic5503@reddit
good choice. Nvidia is the best so it’s not even an option. AMD is trash and no one should be buying it. 4070 Super is SUPERIOR over 7800xt
One_Fun_4592@reddit
Christ people like you are so annoying. The reason Nvidia keeps churning out disappointing, overpriced slop is because of cult members like yourself. Dude a 7900xt BURIES a shitty 4070 super, and you can cop it for around 680 bucks. Hell an xtx you can still nab for about 900, and that thing was literally the second fastest card on the market before the 5080 and 90 dropped, about 8 or so frames on average at 4k behind a 4090 at HALF the price.
BugAutomatic5503@reddit
Try turning on RT on a 7900xtx on blackmyth wukong. Performance is lower than even a 4070 Super. DLSS is the future, fsr is shit. AMD asked for it when they separated GCN into CDNA and RDNA, leaving performance on the table when Nvidia combined compute and gaming. Fsr4 may be better when they use AI, but let’s be real, AMD won’t be competitive until they start producing UDNA cards.
ManufacturerGlobal19@reddit
This comment indeed aged like milk with FSR4
ninjasheep1820@reddit
That's all you Nvidia boys can mention "ray tracing" shutup 🤣
7900xt is better by a long shot. No one cares about ray tracing for a smidge better graphics.
Visual_Recording5553@reddit
You know 7800 XT and 4070 super are not the same price right? Don't be a fanboy.
BugAutomatic5503@reddit
4070 Super is just $50 more expensive, just work overtime or sth to get it, it’s not that hard
Visual_Recording5553@reddit
The 7900 gre is the competition to 4070 super, they are equal prices..I have an Rx 7900 XTX Sapphire Nitro + I don't need anything else.
Redhood101101@reddit (OP)
Can you elaborate what “didn’t feel right” means?
Massive_Analyst1011@reddit
I ended up preferring the RTX 4070 over the RX 7800 XT, and honestly, it just came down to personal preference. On paper, both cards are great, and I spent way too much time reading reviews and watching videos before making a decision. But no matter how much research I did, I couldn’t shake the urge to try the GPU I felt was right for me. And once I did, I knew I had made the right choice.
I did benchmark both cards, and it was interesting because the performance varied depending on the game. In some titles, the RX 7800 XT pulled ahead, while in others, the RTX 4070 clearly outperformed it. But honestly, that didn’t change how I felt about either card—it just reinforced that benchmarks don’t always tell the full story. For me, it was more about how each card felt when I used it in the games I play most.
For me, the biggest thing was the software. I’ve never really liked AMD’s Adrenalin—it just felt clunky compared to NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience and Control Panel. It’s not that Adrenalin is bad, but I just didn’t vibe with it. On top of that, I mess around with AI and hacking stuff occasionally, and having CUDA cores is a big deal for that. AMD has ROCm, but it didn’t feel as widely supported or as easy to use in my case.
I had full regret, when I bought the RX 7800 XT for "better raw gaming performance". But I have been very pleased, when I got the RTX 4070 due to personal preferences and feelings.
So was just trying to say, buy the card that works for you, and the card you want. I don't think there's a wrong answer.
DavefromCA@reddit
Could you elaborte, it just didnt run right?
A_Fat_Sosig@reddit
It’d be cool if we voted with our wallets and made nvidia lower prices, especially for xx70 cards so i say go amd
Defiant-Glass-5436@reddit
Gamers are like 2% of nvidias income, they sell thousands of GPUs to large companies for research, doesn’t matter if we don’t buy them, they make buttloads
ninjasheep1820@reddit
790oxtx is better
TheDiabeto@reddit
It depends on if you’re willing to over pay or wait for the 5070Ti. It’s the better option based on what you want, but will be more expensive and may take much longer to obtain the hardware.
Redhood101101@reddit (OP)
It looks like Best Buy releases them “early morning” tomorrow for $900 ish.
KeanuLeaf@reddit
did you snag one? lol
Public_Package6467@reddit
Go with the 7900 XT for better value, availability and VRAM. but if ray tracing and NVIDIA features are important to you then consider a 4070 Ti non-Super
Reggitor360@reddit
Unless you can find the 4070Ti Super Reskin for MSRP or less... 7900XT.
Justino_14@reddit
Nvidia releases for the 5000 series have been a dumpster fire so far, I'd go xtx.
