I inherited my grandpa's Compaq Presario 5000 series. Everything original!

I always loved how this setup looked and I remember how fast it was when he got it and we still had an older Windows 98 machine at home.
When I got it I made a backup of the harddisk to preserve his old data and did a factory reset afterwards. Installed some updates and it was ready to go 😎

Those speakers were the best... how do they sound nowdays?
RaggedMountainMan@reddit
I had forgot about those monitor mounted speaker setups.
RikkertBakkes@reddit (OP)
Better than expected. Surprisingly rich and warm sound quality
astro_plane@reddit
They're no Sound Sticks, but I remember them sounding fine back in 2006. Really warm sound and heavy on then mids, heavy base would distort. I used the JBL's for a year straight before I got my first stereo which was a JVC with dual subs, I finally retired that stereo a few years ago.
ethanhinson@reddit
I bet I sold a thousand of these working at BestBuy in the early 2000's.
bronzejr@reddit
When was the exact release date? I've been trying to figure that out
Hobthrust@reddit
I sold them at PC World in UK.
bronzejr@reddit
Awesome! I just dusted mine off and I'm using it again
NerdtasticPro418@reddit
I am trying so hard to find a 5000 that is that clean, and an MV740 monitor (or FS740) to go with it, I have a 7000 that is mint but when I was a kid I got a 5000 (5WV254) and I want to scoop up a clean one, but so many have bad yellowing or damage! Thats one heck of a find! I hope you enjoy it!
retrogradescene@reddit
I had this model! Good times.
Superb_Curve@reddit
Mythical condition! Grandparents always know how to take care of their stuff well :)
kaidomac@reddit
Don't forget to get your pizza rolls out of the microwave!!
HumanForce6970@reddit
We had a Presario! Glad you have the pentium 4. Some Presarios contained a Celeron which is nobody’s fav cpu. (Lol, mine had a Celeron).
Temetka@reddit
That computer is a time capsule in excellent physical condition from what I can see in the photos. What are your plans for it?
RikkertBakkes@reddit (OP)
Yeah it's amazing. There wasn't even a lot of dust inside after 20+ years and the plastic parts aren't discolored. Probably going to play a lot of older games on it for some good old nostalgia.
chjmartin2@reddit
This is making me want to go play Monopoly Tycoon. I played a LOT of that game on that machine. Highly recommend.
chjmartin2@reddit
Man I had one of those circa 2001. Loved that machine. Got me through some tough times.
capsulegamedev@reddit
I love it!
Tricky_Fun_4701@reddit
I bought one of that model for my mother decades ago. It's still here :)
Mammoth_Ad5012@reddit
i love that keyboard
0x45646479@reddit
Takes me back!
GrabYourHelmet@reddit
What a gem!
esp-408@reddit
Bruh… it has a 56k modem. Lolol! Are there even ISP’s available for 56k?
Nutchos@reddit
Damn, that looks pristine.
Had one of these back in the day and I've been on the lookout for one (in good condition) for a few years now with no luck. Enjoy it!
lame_1983@reddit
It's always fun to see these old machines and realize that I have WAY more computing power in my pocket. lol
hoggytime613@reddit
Hey neat! This was my battlestation in 2002!

"grandpa" 💀😅
RikkertBakkes@reddit (OP)
Grandpa, yes. He was super tech savvy for a 90 year old
lukkas35@reddit
Awesome !
Hychus232@reddit
Man, everything matching too!
kaolinitedreams@reddit
Beautiful machine!
FrancisJXavyer@reddit
I wish my folks never gave up their old computers, love this look!
bot1898@reddit
That’s awesome, we had the same model when I was in high school. I spent many hours browsing the web and playing Dark age of Camelot on it.
CubilasDotCom@reddit
This is so great
Veddermandenis@reddit
This is the real deal! I have the Duron variant but the board died so I used the case for a sleeper build.
AssistTraditional480@reddit
It even sports an "internet mouse"!
outgoinggallery_2172@reddit
"I always loved how this setup looked."
I have the same computer and I do too.
klonricket@reddit
It's beautiful. Your grandpa treated it well.
kriebz@reddit
Is the recovery CD still in the little compartment on the front?
RikkertBakkes@reddit (OP)
Not in the front, but I do still have the original CDs yes
pegarciadotcom@reddit
My dream retro computer. I envied a friend of mine that had one of these in the early 2000s, and I’m envious of yours too! Take good care of it, it’s a thing of beauty.
RikkertBakkes@reddit (OP)
Will do✌️
onefiveonesix@reddit
Looks awesome! If it still has the original hard drive, I’d advocate for putting something solid state in there. If it has SATA, you can get a 2.5” SATA SSD and a mounting bracket to fit it into the 3.5” drive bay. If it doesn’t have SATA, you could go with an IDE to CompactFlash converter. Both options work very well.
RikkertBakkes@reddit (OP)
I already checked, but it does not support sata in it's current state and I don't think I want to alter it that much
Raglesnarf@reddit
thank you for posting the spec sheet that's on the side of the computer 🍻
monkeyboywales@reddit
Lovely look. That netburst p4 is going to love XP sp3 though 😂
TheRealCOCOViper@reddit
That’s so odd the sticker calls the GPU an NV11 instead of its retail name, the GeForce 2 MX.
theDoboy69@reddit
That keyboard is sick.
MikeThrowAway47@reddit
I’m a grandpa and had this exact set up back in the day. It was the family computer for all seven of us!
eddiewolfgang@reddit
I remember my parents buying one of these at Sears for me. I thought i was hot shit when i got this pc back in the early 2000s
nick_popilopicus@reddit
My first PC purchase was a very similar Compaq Presario circa 2001. I played a lot of Diablo 2 and SimCity 3K on that machine. Great memories.
isotophe@reddit
Awesome! Mine was a Pentium 3. I miss it. Such a pretty machine!
astro_plane@reddit
My school had those computers, they're still my favorite computers from that era. I'm still hoping one randomly pops up in my area. later on in middle school I found those speakers with the OEM stands and I used it as a stereo for my iPod, they were decent.
NetInfused@reddit
WOW what an amazing inheritance, both from a family and retro perspective :) Back when I was a teenager(?) I wanted this machine. I have fond memories of servicing those.
AustriaModerator@reddit
neat. good old 1st gen willamette p4.
MikeTheNight94@reddit
I went to upgrade to one of these out of a other machine from a Celeron and the damn cpu was stuck to the heatsink. It pulled out of the socket and bent a bunch of pins lol. I spent an hour straightening with tweezers. One of them broke off too. I stuck a tiny piece of solid core phone wire in the socket to make the connection. Used that machine for several years like this. Socket 478 I think
MikeTheNight94@reddit
I have this machine. Used to have all the stuff but only the tower remains. If you push in the lower blue plastic it flips down and you can put cd’s in there.
IAMFLYGUY@reddit
Good times!
pavehawkfavehawk@reddit
Wow that is mint. My grandma had the Celeron version of it. I regret getting rid of it
sexyblondebomber@reddit
That’s pretty bad ass.
imnotabotareyou@reddit
This was my childhood
0101-ERROR-1001@reddit
Awesome! Have fun with it!
Tight-Difference1728@reddit
That's actually cool af 🙏🏽
blckb3ard@reddit
Gorgeous! 😍😍😍
pueblokc@reddit
That's the first desktop I ever bought. At circuit City.
Good memories
VaxCluster@reddit
Beautiful. I had a 5WV252 that looked exactly like this, except it ran Windows Me instead of XP. I’ve had an eBay alert for at least 7 years but it hasn’t shown up for sale yet.
thedudesews@reddit
Holy shit. That computer was a wedding gift for my wife and I back in 2000.
squatdog@reddit
I binned two of these in the mid 00s and regret it every single time I think about it. This looks really clean, like it just came out the box
BanGreedNightmare@reddit
I vividly remember working at Best Buy in college when that was on the shelf. There was a taller sibling model that had issues with the memory becoming unseated due to flex in the chassis. We’d have to open them up and reseat everything to get them to boot. Fun times.
toddforester89@reddit
Make sure you check the capacitors aren't bulging or leaking
kr00j@reddit
Gut it and put a 5090 in that bitch
Senior-Lynx-6809@reddit

SterquilinusC31337@reddit
Wow.
Lead_resource@reddit
Its BEAUTIFUL
Practical-Juice9549@reddit
Love this 🔥
demigod999@reddit
I got one of these new in 2000 and kept it for 12 years. 700mhz Pentium III was a sweet spot. Went from Win98 to 2000/ME to Windows XP with it. Great system. I always preferred the look of these to the HP Pavilions and Dell Dimensions of the time, too.
z3r0n3gr0@reddit
This is why a friend of mine could play Quake3 and UT with that NV 64MB. Me i just had to wait forever...
newtrawn@reddit
I always thought those speakers mounted on the monitor was such an afterthought. Also, it gives the monitor "ears". I thought the way Packard Bell did it was much more natural.
RikkertBakkes@reddit (OP)
Yeah they look a bit funny but the sound quality is surprisingly good, even after all these years. Probably because it's JBL
Trid3nt@reddit
What an absolute thing of beauty. Congratulations? I'm not sure that's the right word, given it's through inheritance.. But nonetheless - amazing.
