Combi microwave and air fryers - are they actually any good?

I have a microwave oven. That can microwave as it ovens. It books the best large meats. Juicy inside, crispy outside. Typically have a much higher overall oven temperature. Air fryer setting may differ

Had one at work and it died after 6 months. Likely because one woman took the piss and would bake potatoes in it for 90 minutes daily. Could have just microwaved them for 10 and then finished off by air frying but no, she had to hog it and put unnecessary hours of use through the thing.

I bought a really expensive Sage 3 in 1 microwave it’s super good I chucked the ninja air fryer out And solely use that for most of the food i eat. seems to cope really well and work good heating loads of stuff , had it for over a year now bought it in a black Friday sale. I’m glad I did

Does it get dirty when you use it for air frying? I have one but (outside of microwaving) only use it for warming plates or bread as I hate dirty microwaves and cba to clean it.

Very easy to wipe clean has a coating on it of some sort nothing sticks and easily wiped even after been left a few days

The air fryer bit definitely does what I'd expect an air fryer to do and the microwave seems to microwave although I haven't fully grasped the power settings. It's a big old unit, though.

I had a combi microwave from SMEG (microwave and grill) which shit itself within 2 years. They tried everything to get out of replacing it, eventually did, and I haven’t used the grill function since because the fat spitting everywhere is what broke the microwave in the first place. It just isn’t fit for purpose, microwaves need to be spotlessly clean if you want a long lifespan.

In my experience, ours isn’t that great compared to the air fryer. Takes longer and still can’t get better results than using an air fryer.

I've not used an actual air fryer so can't compare directly. Following the air fryer directions on a packet of chips doesn't seem to work well. I need to cook for a lot longer than the directions say to make them crispy, but maybe that's the case with an actual air fryer. I have made some tasty air-fried chicken strips in breadcrumbs. As for the microwave aspect - it's a microwave. I don't think there's a lot of variation in them. It heats up food.

You need to check the quantity of chips you're putting in the air fryer. If you stick too many in, the air can't circulate properly and it'll take forever. If we're doing enough oven chips for the family of 5 it's always better to stick them in the real oven, but a portion for one person cooks well in the air fryer.

It depends on which one you buy. I have one that's 3 in 1 and is not great. Tge microwave and grill are good but the "air fryer" can't get hot enough. You'd need 2000w and the fan needs to blow like fuck to heat the area.

I have a PowerXL combi microwave / air fryer / oven and I'm happy with it. As a microwave it works as you'd expect. As an air fryer, it's slightly slower than a dedicated air fryer, but it's also a lot bigger which is convenient. If an air fryer typically heats up things 50% faster than an oven, I'd say this one heats them up 35% faster. The oven function also works well. It doesn't have strong air circulation so it's what you need for bulky items that need to be cooked evenly instead of being cooked at their surface.

They seem to have just re-labelled the combi-microwave/convection oven as microwave/air fryer. Fundamentally these should be the same thing (as an air fryer is just a small convection oven), but the ones I've used are not as good at the air fryer bit as the basket type (I couldn't say how they stand up against the larger toaster oven type) - jack of all trades master of none and all that.

Have then just renamed combo microwaves as air fryers much lke they see to have renamed halogen oven ait fryers? I wish they would stop doing that, I also want to stop calling anything an air fryer that is not (which includes 99.9% of air fryers (unless it uses oil it's not frying)).

Interested in this - have been contemplating it myself too, but drawn to getting the smallest possible microwave since we only use it once in a blue moon to heat a pouch of something (there's one that's tiny and shaped to fit in corner) in combo with a tall but thin frier (eg, dual stack) for the same surface estate.

The reason an air fryer saves money is it heats up a smaller volume area. Hence a combo microwave is v similar I have both 🤷‍♀️. An air fryer is easier to keep clean imo
