Oh good. My Reddit name is old. I used to live in Raleigh and they have a lot of strip mall bars. My initials are SMB. I came home from an afternoon of fish and chips and Guinness and made it up.
Look for Cajun Streak or Le 'tite eclair by Belton Richard. The other is by Johnny Janot and I think is called C'EST Moi Encore Therese or maybe just Therese. Both on youtube.
I met him. He lives in a neighborhood next to mine. I worked in the neighborhood liquor and wine store. He came in with his wife. She was lovely. He was an old poop. I love him though. We used to sing his songs on the school bus. He has a venue near me.
I think Rays popularity is more tied to age than location. You figure his career has lasted 8 decades, with most of his successes taking place in the 70s/80s so his fan base is more elderly
At least once a year “and then that squirrel went berserk, in the First self righteous church” gets stuck in my head and I rewatch the video. My coworker named Margaret never got the joke either
Very nostalgic, remember watching his VHS tape as a kid when we’d go to my grandparents log cabin.
Ted Nivison and Eddy Burback did a cross country tour to every Matgaritaville. Their commentary on the Cleveland margaritaville involved them zooming in on the eyebrow billboard on I-90 while driving past it.
I miss having WGN broadcasts here in Texas. Tom Skillng’s soothing voice describe what I can only imagine is world-ending snow and ice was so comforting here in the land of heat.
If you mean this guy [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynn\_Hauldren](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynn_Hauldren) who appeared in their commercials, and eventually as an animated character, he's not around anymore.
Don’t forget Roz Abrahams of Eyewitness News. Step right up and say hello Roz!!
Crazy Eddie (going way back)
Is that Naked Cowboy guy known outside of the tri-state area?
If you watch RuPaul's Drag Race, every time someone makes a plastic surgery joke Ru or Michelle will say "Thank you Dr Zizmor!" I've always wondered how many young gay people and queens have picked that up, entirely unaware of who he actually is.
My favorite NYC celebrity was the vegetable peeler man in Union Square, Joseph Ades.
The Dodgers were my Dad's team. We became a Mets family when they entered the National League.
WPIX had the best after-school programs when I was a kid. *Adventures of Superman*, *Gigantor*, *Speed Racer*, *Supercar* , *8th Man*, *Star Trek* reruns, *Abbott & Costello,* *The Chuck McCann Show*!
It’s so weird reading names that I’ve spent my whole life just hearing. Like, I listen to traffic on the radio, so when I see something spelled out, like Throgsneck, it looks so weird because I hear it all the time. Does that make sense? Like reading Celine and Barnes I had no idea who that was, but then I read it out loud and I was like oh yeah, I know those guys.
I 100% understand. There is a bridge that I drive over at least once a month between Brooklyn and Queens. I read the name on the bridge and it doesn't make sense, but if someone says it I would be like " yea. That bridge"
Dr Z! "YOUR dermatologist." I remember his ads on the su way.
He retired (or died) recently and the local news did a piece on him.
Mr. G gets on WPIX with the worst jacket/pants combos. He was the best.
I remember Mattress Mack because after Enron collapsed and the Astros ballpark needed a new name, there was a period where he was the only one interested in buying the naming rights. He wasn't willing to pay the asking price but he was like the highest bidder for a little bit. There was a story in the Wall Street Journal about it.
Not a Houstonian but I’m familiar with Mattress Mack because I’m a big baseball guy & he famously does his big Astros wager/promotion (which is a rather brilliant piece of marketing) & it always gets national attention in the baseball world.
John Provost is probably the most obscure celebrity here. He was Timmy in the Lassie movies. We also have Norman Greenbaum, one hit wonder, but everyone knows the song.
Daniel Boone walks around in fringed leather and carries a huge rifle- everybody knows that guy and he recently moved to my town! Turns out he is pretty normal.
Oh- and regionally, Mario Savio lived here- had him as a college professor. I would imagine he is not well known outside of California, but he might be. My dad was his generation (but we all knew who he was.)
He has been around my entire life. My mom used to sell at the flea market every weekend when I was growing up and he was always there. And then I would just see him wandering around town. He has kind of a bad rep now because of the underage boys thing which sucks.
I lived in New Mexico for two summers and I remember Mark Ronchetti. I remember him more than other news people because a few years ago that he was running for Senate or something.
Mark Ronchetti was such a disappointment. I used to love his weather segments and then it turned out he was just a terrible person and it makes me sad.
It's an odd question, celebrity enough to be known on the inside, but not the out so much. I could rattle off lots of really famous people easy. The only other I could think of are local radio personalities. 🤷♂️
The guy's lost a step, but by God it's not Eagles football without him.
We've been spoiled rotten with announces in Philly. Merrill, Harry and Whitey, Zumoff, Gene Hart, Jim Jackson. Just top tier all around.
I think Uncle Floyd might have some larger recognition at this point, but The Uncle Floyd Show was an absolutely formative part of my childhood. My husband, who grew up less than 80 miles away, had never heard of him.
I live near a university and my dog is pretty famous on campus. People greet him by name when they see him and his Instagram has over 300 followers, so he's kind of a big deal.
Ron Steele (local anchorman, but has had an impressive career), Mark Schnackenberg -local weatherman, Maddie Poppe (she won American idol, but she’s from my hometown), Dan Gable was a wrestler and coach (has been on JRE, but I’m not sure the general populace has heard of him), my sister is good friends with the guys from PewView on YouTube from the Dumont/Clarksville, Iowa area
Cal Worthington
Maybe not so much a local celebrity but he wasn’t really known outside of the Western US. My dad worked for him on his ranch
https://youtu.be/8hT2oP—NSU?si=I4ahWC-KgEntTGyQ
Lil' Suzie the little person prostitute frequents downtown St. Paul and she needs your dollars and cigarettes. It's actually pretty sad. There are Facebook and Tiktoks exploiting her and picking on her. She's not nice and there's a reason for that.
This guy. He's so iconic his billboards no longer have his name or any words.
https://cdn.clevelandmagazine.com/sitefinity/images/default-source/november-2022/tim-misny-billboard3202da2d-9ce8-496c-b957-9295cd6760a2.jpg?sfvrsn=c86aec8c_1&w=411&dpr=2&auto=compress%2cformat
Oooh, I’ll add “I’m Clark Howard!” - I saw him in a restaurant and some young guys recognized him, and were trying to buy him some craft beer, but he would only settle for a coors light or something because it was less expensive.
The last time I checked there are very few videos out there. Someone should really call Gallery Furniture and ask if more tapes exist. Actually, local TV history seems like something we should be archiving better overall, everywhere.
I have 2. Both are pretty famous locally for the Dunkin commercials. Not sure if they’re known outside the area at all. One is Matthew Damon and the other Benjamin Affleck.
I have 2. Both are pretty famous locally for the Dunkin commercials. Not sure if they’re known outside the area at all. One is Matthew Damon and the other Benjamin Affleck.
John Nash (the A Beautiful Mind guy) would go to the local sandwich shop with his wife or son several times a week. Most people knew who he was but just left him alone.
John the Baptist. Local homeless man that wears cardboard boxes and lives behind the dump in a commune. Always see him dragging a big cardboard box/sled filled with smaller cardboard boxes. He preaches the word to his “followers” and will talk about his version of god with strangers on the street/local surrounding businesses.
Frank Chu. San Francisco. Shows up to protests carrying his very unique sign that has absolutely nothing to do with the protest. He’s a singer too.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Chu
Alexander Shunnarah
Personal injury attorney with billboards every twenty feet throughout Alabama.
I live in Maryland now though.
We've got [Matthew Lesko](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Lesko).
Obviously lots of actually famous people here as well due to being DC suburb. When I went in for jury duty, they mentioned that even the Chief Justice had been called in twice and had to wait to be dismissed like everyone else.
A local celeb I'd love to run into is [Kojo Nnamdi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kojo_Nnamdi).
Elliot Davis, the well-dressed scamster who has walked the streets asking helpless suckers for $20 so he can buy a can of Fix-A-Flat for longer than most of us can remember. If you see him, speak his name or offer him an actual can of Fix-A-Flat and he will flee.
Well shit, I had a basically identical encounter in Maryland. Gave the dude all the cash in my wallet (not more than $20).
He was well dressed, said he volunteered for a church and the van broke. I thought it might be a scam, but wasn't going to hurt me if it was.
We have an Elliott Davis in STL. He’s a news host who outs scams and other stuff. When people threaten to call the news it’s usually Elliott Davis they are referring to.
Wallace and Ladmo were local celebrities here in Phoenix. They did a low budget variety kids show in the 70' and 80's and gave away Ladmo bags (treat bags) to the TV audience. Some people may know Pat McMahon, who played many of the characters on the show, because he does a radio show. But outside Phoenix no one has ever heard of the Wallace and Ladmo show. It was cheesy, but I have great memories of it as a kid.
I came here to say this! I loved them as a kid but never got to go in the show. My sister did and she received a Ladmo bag. I was a little jealous but also very happy for her.
Jay Cutler, a former Mr Olympia body builder, went to my high-school.
Mike Hsu and Mistress Carrie were very popular radio djs. Hosted a lot of rock and metal concerts around New England.
Our city councilman slash tv host slash talent show presenter Kip Tyner.
And I'd say our regional weatherman, but I've been surprised by how many people all over the country know and love/hate James Spann.
This just hits me as an odd question, because there are hundreds of newscasters and radio personalities around the country who will be 'local celebrities' in their broadcast areas and completely unknown by anyone from outside it. That's just one category of celebrity. Same thing with columnists, musicians, sports figures, etc. Until they get on a 'national' stage, they're unknowns.
How many people outside Minnesota had a clue who Tim Walz was 2 years ago?
The Waver (Ed Carlson… now deceased), who would walk the 20 miles between Carson City and Reno, Nevada every day, waving at every car that passed by on highway 395. He was active from the mid 70s to about 2000.
Bike guy. He always rides his bike around town and collects trash while going. Any time there is an accident or someone has car trouble he appears and starts directing traffic.
Are you watching a Bucks game (or Brewers or whatever) with the Wisconsin tv feed? I'm quite sure their practice is focused on Wisconsin given their website and marketing language.
We had a Shaman back in the 70s-80s who had a full-on hippie commune on the outskirts of town.
His name was [Rolling Thunder](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Thunder_(person)). There's a bit of controversy now, but the 70s-80s were a simpler time.
He did have a little bit of fame, sort of, due to members of The Grateful Dead following him and investing in his commune (purchasing the land) but mostly he was just my cool neighbor when he stayed in town. There were drum circles, tipis, and a thick cloud of marijuana smoke hanging over his yard.
He gave me butterscotch candy and tiedyed shirts. Hippie grandpa vibes.
The only local characters I can think of that pretty much everyone knew about them have passed on. Hispanic Elvis hung around the downtown tourist areas and was exactly what you’d picture, except he was pretty old. Long ago we had Bongo Joe, a street musician who played drums made from oil drums.
About an hour west of here there's a guy that used to be a late night talk show host but I don't think any of what you would recognize them with the beard he's got
Bicycle Brent. He is in his mid 70s now andwas born with cerebral palsy. He lives in a group home and worked at the local university for decades in food service. His greatest joy in life is riding his bike around and honking and waving at everyone. 20 uears ago some kid beat him up and I thought our area would lynch thos guy everyone was so furious about it. He had a massive 70th birthday, someone even wrote a song about the guy. When he dies people here will truly be sad.
Vince Papale, the inspiration for Disney’s Invincible. Even people in this area have no idea who he is (and the Eagles just won a Super Bowl on his birthday - no mention of it!)
Matt Luken, former drummer for the band Mudhoney is our neighbor. Fawn Rose, one of Pete Rose’ kids, lives in our community, and volunteers to coach youth sports. Of course, most people would know Eddie Vedder, who lives at the beach, in our community.
Jim Click - Owns a number of car dealerships and is a local legend in the Tucson area. Been a fixture in commercials for over 50 years. But go up to Phoenix and most people haven't heard of the guy unless they went to college down here.
Dan McDowell and Jake Kemp have a podcast called The Dumb Zone. They used to be on an award-winning sports radio station. They have a pretty serious cult following in Dallas.
There’s a lady in one of my Facebook groups and her husband is in jail with him. The husband spies and tells the wife everything and she updates the group
I'll throw you a better central valley example....Wayne Theibaud, all those tasty desserts and agricultural patchwork landscapes.
Maybe a bit more well known outside of NorCal in artist circles.
Help me Howard! A guy whose daytime job was a public defender (public official who's a criminal defense lawyer for people who cannot afford a private lawyer). But what he is most famous for is having a segment on the local news where he helps people in civil disputes with landlords, companies, municipalities, etc.
She's this woman who's been on many billboards along the freeways around Detroit for years, advertising for a law firm. I don't think she's a lawyer. She just gets clients for the firm. She has a very distinctive look and has likely had many cosmetic procedures. People say she looks like the Muppet named Janice.
John Waters. Everyone in Baltimore has a Waters story. He’s a gem.
Leslie before his passing in Austin. I had my hand read a few times outside Ester’s Follies.
Not gonna lie, Jane at church seems to know the whole dang town!
Aside from that we have one famous murderer from a few years ago that some may or may not remember being on national news
There are a couple of musicians that are a big deal locally but outside of this part of the state no one really knows. Couple of former pro athletes that were college stars that everybody knows here but outside of the area no one remembers.
Our local mall has a guy we call “the ____mall pimp”. The redacted part is my town name.
He’s known for his colorful zoot suits. Theres many rumors about him, such as he won the lottery and that’s how he bought all the suits. He just walks up and down the mall chatting with people.
I guess Henry Cho, the comedian. He's a Korean who grew up here in Knoxville, did some touring around the country, but even I didn't know he still performs until a couple of years ago
We had a couple make it big from my hometown as seen on the hangover (he's in my mom's yearbook) and outerbanks. But Alex key is pretty good one too I don't think he's big yet
I went to Pittsburgh once. I did not enjoy it. Had I known I could've maybe potentially been anywhere near Doug Bradley at some point, I would've been a lot more optimistic about the whole trip.
My friend bought/won me a date with Angelyne! Met her at the Coffee Bean on Sunset (her favorite location), took a ride in her signature pink corvette, haggled with her over merch prices (she sells some good stuff out of her trunk) and got a cute photo together. The experience was as amazing and as bizarre as one could ever imagine.
Not from LA but lifelong fan.
Stan Boreson, maybe? More my parents/grandparents generations, though. He might be well-known to the Norwegian-American community at large, if he is known and remembered outside of the Pacific Northwest.
So this is fucked up.
In Cincinnati, we had this guy who went by Fluke Skywalker.
He bore a striking resemblance to Mark Hammil. He’d go to comic cons, festivals, children’s hospitals, children’s birthdays and stuff like that dress as Luke Skywalker.
His real name was John Stevens.
He was found with child pornography on his and killed himself before he could be brought to justice.
Before that, he was a bit of a local celebrity
Once there was a similar question like this in a parenting forum I belonged to. It was “who’s not generally thought of as attractive that you find attractive.”Someone said “Ryan Reynolds” and explained he was so funny, that’s what made him attractive. He had already been voted “People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive”. I feel like “Eric Clapton” is equally as ridiculous.
Yes, the Eric Clapton. He is extraordinarily famous, but for some reason every time I’ve run into him around town no one knows who he is. It is quite bizarre.
I’m telling you, you would think people would know who he is but he somehow flies below the radar. I personally don’t understand it, but most outsiders in the community don’t recognize him.
They're asking for somebody whose celebrity is local. Everybody in the area knows them, nobody outside the area does.
*Everybody in the world* knows who Eric Clapton is.
Popcorn man in downtown Philly. Homeless guy that would take the money he got and go straight to this gourmet popcorn place. Always left a pile of kernels on his corner. He must’ve already been well into his 70’s when I was in college. If he’s still around I hope he’s alright.
Milwaukee, WI here. Though no longer with us, we had a nude sunbather named, I kid you not, Dick Bacon. He won Mr. Nude Universe back in the ‘70s. He would sunbathe every day at the lake front, even in the dead of winter, inside a foil-fenced enclosure.
I didn't know Dick Bacon won anything. I just thought us drivers and pedestrians were the winners. Didn't he wear a Speedo after a while? I would think I would have remembered the full Monty.
Bootsy Collins, unless you’re a big music person into 70s funk and bassists.
Nick Lachey although judging from Love Is Blind he seems to think everyone knows who he is.
>although judging from Love Is Blind he seems to think everyone knows who he is.
He had a very popular show on MTV so most people between maybe 30 and 50 would know him from that
Bootsy is responsible for a lot of stuff since then. I caught a show with some of the
Rubber Band a couple of years ago. But, yes, I also love funk so, touche.
Here in Portland we have a guy we just called Blue Man who walks around downtown wearing all blue, painted blue, blue hair, etc. He mostly rants on a megaphone and hangs near Pioneer Square. He's well known here (you can google image search him) but doubt he's known anywhere else.
Michael McShane. He's an actor. His biggest role was Friar Tuck in the Robin Hood movie from the early 90s. The one where everyone is British except Robin Hood. He also plays the hypnotherapist in Office Space.
When I was in Chicago it was Wesley Willis. He had a cult following but anyone in the music scene seemed to at least know of the guy in Chicago but not many other places.
Pittsburgh:
Donnie Iris is a hard rocker who has a couple of songs on the radio, but most wouldn't know him outside of our area unless they really like classic rock.
also The Clarks, a Pittsburgh-area band that's pretty well-known here. when my uncles moved out of state, they said nobody had ever heard of them.
Edgar Snyder. a lawyer from Pittsburgh that specializes in personal injury cases. he has now spread his practice to WV and OH, but I thought this guy was the biggest lawyer in the country growing up. his commercials were ubiquitous, and the slogan, "there's no fee <dramatic pause> unless we get money for you<point at camera>," is seared into my brain.
Cyril Wecht. a forensic pathologist with a legal degree who gave testimony in several high profile cases and was the president of both the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the American College of Legal Medicine, as well as head of the board of trustees of the American Board of Medicine.
Can’t think of any from my town specifically, but Cleburne, Texas has this guy called the Chinese cowboy who is just a Chinese guy that always wears a cowboy hat and has a thick Oklahoma accent. Kind of a local celebrity I guess?
Local TV anchor Jim Gardner hasn't had to pay for a mustache trim in Philadelphia in 50 years. Outside this region he's probably unrecognizable. [Maybe he'd be recognized for being in an episode of Abbott Elementary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2HNZqfrCII).
Michael Jackson guy. He just some guy that dresses up as MJ, plays his music, and dances his heart out in parking lots around town. Everyone loves him.
Fritz Wetherbee. He runs a NH history segment on a program called NH Chronicle. He's a pretty funny guy on air, with interesting factoids about everything related to the state, and goes on deep dives you'd never asked about but are super interesting once he starts talking.
He's also quite the ladies man off the air so I've heard
There can't be another answer for Memphis, Tennessee. It's Prince Mongo. His real name is Robert Hodges, but he goes by Prince Mongo. He claims to have been born on the planet Zambodia over 300 years ago.
He has also run in every mayoral race for Memphis since the 70s, and has made it as high as 3rd place, running as an independent. His suggested improvements for the city? Casinos AND prisons on Mud Island, while also introducing sharks to the river and the Memphis harbor so the prisoners don't escape. Oh, and public hangings.
But hey, he says Ronald Reagan endorsed him at some point. Oh, and I think he's a millionaire?
Tich McCooey https://www.inverness-courier.co.uk/news/mfr-legend-tich-mccooey-signs-off-with-thanks-to-listeners-a-367599
I don’t listen to MFR but after living in the area for a couple of decades you know the name if not the voice.
Travis Meyer, the weatherman for Channel 6 in Tulsa, OK, has become a regional meme, with his image printed on things like coffee mugs, t-shirts, and even saint candles.
Back home in Massachusetts...
Pete Bouchard is notorious as a meteorologist. Not because of his impeccable professionalism or charisma, but because he comes off as such a *douche* all the time. He has, however, achieved a little bit of fame. A clip of him making a double entendre when predicting the total snowfall for the Worcester area went viral and made it to Tosh.0 back in the day.
Rob Potylo is best known as Robby Roadsteamer, a comic musician that had cult hits like "I Put a Baby in You," and used to front a band called the Sweatpants Boners. He's garnered some attention recently for trolling MAGA rallies.
Someone that only New England metalheads will know is "the Undertaker." No, not the wrestler, but a superfan that used to attend nearly every big metal show that hit Worcester and Providence and would *own* the moshpit. He's a big guy, maybe 6'6", and dressed the part with tattered shirt and grappling gloves. From what I've heard, he's actually a hell of a nice guy, too, unless you're the type who crowdkills.
The Tacoma Mall Suit Guy.
He spends like everyday at the mall in a monochromatic formal outfit with a hat and everything. One time I was meeting a friend there and saw him get into a small fender bender right in the parking lot!
Ron "I sue drunk drivers" Bell where I grew up. Maybe Bob Roll for where I am now? He's well known outside the area in his sport, but beyond that, people probably draw a blank.
A lot of times the answers to this is some sort of popular local news anchor or local sports broadcaster, or a local wealthy businessman or philanthropist.
Here's an example of someone who was a local celebrity, but then became much more famous later in life (or at least, his voice did). John Facenda worked as a news anchor for Philadelphia's CBS affiliate for decades, but late in his career he was hired as the narrator for NFL films. Even nearly 40 years after his death, his distinct "Voice of God" narration style remains instantly recognizable.
Fred Kirby the Singing Cowboy was a local talent who had a kid's show on WBTV Charlotte in the '70s and '80s, along with "Uncle Jim" Patterson. A highlight of my youth was seeing him and getting a picture taken at a railroad themed park called Tweetsie in Boone, NC.
Ride Calico! Ride!
I live in an area that has been home to lots of celebrities. A certain extremely well known female singer went to high school here, several country singers lived/live here (one lives across the street), an Indy-winning race car driver, the list kind of goes on.
[Robert Wadlow,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wadlow) [Elijah P Lovejoy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah_Parish_Lovejoy), Miles Davis, T-Bone Burnett, Phyllis Diller, Agnes Morehead, Vincent Price
I bet you are a blast at parties. Did I put some well known people? Yes. Is it known that they were from this area? \*wobbles hand\* It's a toss up. However, Lovejoy is not known. Wadlow may be known if people are into stats like that. But on a given day? Nah.
I didn't mention Josephine Baker, Bob Costas, Tina Turner, T.S. Elliot, Tennesse Williams, John Goodman, Phyllis Schlafly, and who knows who else.
Why are you nit picking? Nah, it's not my problem
There’s a hat man who has this heavily decorated sun hat, he walks around and I believe I’ve seen him sitting on a (his?) porch. I’ve also seen him at mass on Easter. He looks a little crazy but is very nice and a great singer.
Tim Misny. He's this bald tough looking lawyer man from Cleveland known for his ads that just consist of his face and his slogan "I'll make them pay." If you've ever driven through northeast Ohio, you've probably seen one of his billboards.
Here in Birmingham, Alabama there is a lawyer named Alexander Shunnarah who might actually have thousands of billboards with his face on it. He's basically a local meme. There are even some upside down billboards seemingly just to emphasize how absurd it all is.
The spokesperson (Public Information Officer) for the local school district. Whenever school is cancelled or delayed (flooding, snow, black ice that still hasn't melted on back roads days after the snow has melted in less shaded places, abundance of illness, etc), his voice is the one heard on the pre-recorded phone call sent out to all the parents and staff.
I'm out of school now, but my mom is a teacher so we still get excited when we think we're getting a call from him.
In college towns where the football (or other sport) team are consistently good, then players on that team.
For example when I went to University of Georgia, it was common for students to recognize football players. Football players were "celebrities" in the local area, but if for whatever reason they decided to go to major cities like Atlanta, they would be mostly unknown there (and it actually does happen, football players who want to go to bars/clubs/etc without being recognized go to Atlanta usually)
George Sink and Bill Green. Personal injury lawyers. “Always think Green when you collide, call 771-2455!” And George Sink, Dial all 9’s!” We also have Akeem Anastipoulo, another lawyer who had a ridiculous court tv show for a little while called “Eye For An Eye”, in which he played Judge Extreme Akeem.
I’m pretty sure Warren buffet lives in my city ??? Or is from here? Although I think it’s unethical being a billionaire. Warren buffet offers a lot of support and help to our community!
Bart Durham.
Not so much because he's good or anything, he's a lawyer that I think was born at the age of 75. There was a redditor on /r/Nashville that was named Bart-Durhams-Corpse until it got banned.
His name is Bobby Holley. He is always in town and doing things to help others in need. Always doing events and raising money for various people struggling. And I’m sure more. He was a Substitute teacher in my school district and apparently he was great friends with my late grandfather.
Pat Cashman - Aside from being the announcer voice in Smash Bros. Brawl, and the narrator of "Bill Nye The Science Guy", he is mostly known locally for starring in "Almost Live!" a Seattle sketch comedy show that came on between the news and SNL on KING5 in Seattle for 15 years. He, along with his son and other former cast members have tried to start new shows of a similar vein, but they don't seem to last too long locally. You'll still hear him doing some radio and TV work locally.
Thinking about him, most people locally wouldn't recognize him, unless they lived in the area pre-2000.
I was torn on choosing John, but he is even more niche than Pat. Could have also chosen Bob Nelson, but he actually had an academy award nominated film.
I'm not sure if all these people _still_ live in this area but I can name a few. Also some of these people are pretty well known. Maybe not by the youngest generation.
Ken Jennings (I've actually seen him at a restaurant!)
Kenny G
Dave Mathews
Sir mix a lot
Quincy Jones (RIP)
Macklemore (probably the most famous on this list)
Bell Witch ( a band, not a person, but very famous in their niche genre)
Tom Robbins
Dave Chihuly
Dave Grohl
Buzz Osborn
Eddie Vedder
Dan Savage
Matress Mac, though it's possible his sports betting stunts have made him more widely known.
Maybe more for older people, but Marvin Zindler fits the bill.
He had feuds with Blackjack Lanza and Ray "The Crippler" Stevens and was in a tag team with Jim Brunzell. (For those who don't know he's the son of Verne Gagne)
Dead now, but Irv Weinstein. He was a local Buffalo newscaster, but because of location he was watched by all of Southern Ontario, including Toronto. Back when Buffalo was a major city beginning to decline and Toronto was just becoming the huge metro area it is now. He inspired many SCTV skits and many Canadian Comedians including Mike Myers. Outside that broadcast area, no one knew him.
The Hates. Oldest punk band in Houston. The lead singer/guitarist is in his 60's and still plays shows (and has a mohawk) In fact I'm going to see them tonight.
Whenever Joe Walsh & Ringo are walking in downtown Aspen, Joe gets recognized. Ringo just keeps walking. (They are married to sisters & hang out often.
I grew up on Long Island, NY
- Big Barry - had a small chain of restaurants
- Crazy Eddie- the electronics chain was run by Eddie Antar who was charged with fraud and other crimes. But it was the person who played “Crazy Eddie” on the commercials that we remember, radio DJ Jerry Carroll.
- Yolanda Vega - she did the NY State Lottery announcements for over 30 years.
Don’t ask anyone from Cleveland. They think everyone knows their local celebrity. I live in Cincinnati and we will be in Cleveland visiting my wife’s family and a commercial will come on tv. My brother in law will be like, You like this guy’s commercials? And I’m, Dude, he’s advertising his used car lot a mile and a half from here. How the hell am I going to know him?
Ramblin’ Rod, a Portland kid’s cartoon show host from the 80’s. A small stadium riser filled with little kids were his interviewees, and participants in the smile contest, before they rolled some old Warner Brothers cartoons. He wore a huge vest completely covered in pins that kids would bring to give him.
Every city has an eccentric personal defense lawyer with a catchy slogan, without fail. Shout out to David Gruber in Milwaukee, WI. One Call, That’s All!
Ashley McBride. She’s from Waldron, Arkansas. We (the chamber of commerce) recently put up a sign outside town indicating that this is her hometown. I’d honestly never heard of her before we started that project, and I doubt many other people outside western Arkansas have heard of her.
STAYUMBL
A notoriously reckless driver with the above vanity plate. Caused a local sensation with siting breathlessly reported on local social media and [news coverage](https://www.wral.com/amp/18642865/)of her accidents and court cases. Her license [was finally revoked](https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=stayumbl%20revoked%20license&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:b0104ba4,vid:S4aSG_sWS1w,st:0)
But her [suspension is over](https://www.reddit.com/r/bullcity/s/5AZaeRNkQo) and she’s back on the road. Either calmer now or better at staying under the radar.
Around Denver, if you have been here long enough, the Shag Man for Rocky's Auto. Long running ad campaign with multiple actors playing the role. Eventually they got "political" and the newcomers clutched their pearls (don't get me wrong, I don't condone the actions, just don't really care what a bunch of outsiders think), and he is no more.
There's a great bit in the Guitar Hero episode of South Park where the kids meet a bunch of local Colorado celebs, like Jake Jabs, Ron Zappolo, and Tom Shane.
He's dead now but buck Owens. He was a big country singer and hosted a TV show. He was the king of Bakersfield. Which to outsiders would be surprising because merle haggard (known as one of the greatest country singers of all time) is from here too.
Frankie McDonald... He's this special needs guy with a highly abrasive voice that makes meteorological predictions. Some of his wild prediction videos have gone viral so some people may actually know him.
[The gentleman in these photos](https://www.reddit.com/r/MarilynMonroe/comments/1doq48l/marilyn_monroe_photographed_by_sam_shaw_at_a/) lived in some caves in the park in my neighborhood. In the winter he wore giant flannel overalls. He would join in all of the astronomical meetups. He wasn't homeless, he just preferred to live outside. Always full of joy. When a game was on, he'd go into the local pub and get a plate of french fries so he could watch the game (or he's listen to a radio with headphones). He unfortunately injured himself and has to live indoors these days and he's in another neighborhood, but when he's seen, he's still full of joy.
(He was out to lunch with a co-worker when some photographer asked if they'd mind sitting on the bench for a couple of photos. Most people in the neighborhood who know him don't know he was in these pictures)
[henry.](https://itsahenry.com/) His murals (always signed with just his first name) are all over the northwest quadrant of our city. He has a really distinctive cartoonish style that is instantly recognizable - I've seen his work on countless walls, garage doors, powerboxes, even cars. There are businesses that have paid him to paint their entire interior with his characters. Pretty much anybody in our area knows exactly what you mean if you say "I saw a new henry today", but I've found that even in other quadrants of the city (and I'd presume anywhere outside of the city) you get a blank look.
Local station Fox 5’s Arthur Chi’en is the hardest working man in NYC TV news. With his glasses on he anchors the weekend 10 o’clock news and with his glasses off during the work week he’s an on the scene as a street reporter covering whatever story he’s assigned. He’s like the Clark Kent of NYC news.
STAYUMBL aka JESUSDOS
These are license plates of a particular woman who drives so dangerously that r/bullcity regularly points out her locations and exploits around Durham, NC.
The crazy lady that stands outside of farmers markets and such, screaming apocalyptic stuff. Then she gets arrested and goes back to her yurt to protest.... something... another day.
Don Melvoin was the host of a morning show in Indianapolis in the 60s, and, while not quite a neighbor, he lived about half a mile away. He was a character. His son, Cam, hit a baseball over my head in right field when I was 9 and won the game at my expense. But he wasn't a jerk about it. About a year later, they moved to, I think, Las Vegas.
Gary England was the long-time meteorologist for the Oklahoma City CBS affiliate. Some years ago, before he retired, he was interviewed on The Colbert Report.
In the early 2000s, there was a local computer company whose whole bit was that their founder was a really loud and crazy guy. He was known for his commercials where he'd do wacky, annoying stuff, and then pitch computers at the end. People would go into the shops to complain about the commercials, and leave with new computers, so it worked, I suppose.
The late Beatle Bob was a celebrity in St Louis. He was famous for wearing crazy clothes, attending the "cool" concerts, dancing like a madman and then leaving.
We have 3 local celebrities from this town. In order of most recognizable to least, they are David Grohl, Chris Columbus (the filmmaker, not the spontaneous conqueror) & a different filmmaker who was the director of the movie Season of the Witch, among others, whose name is currently escaping me.
As a 10 year old there was a soccer player who signed on with a European club who would come by and be a guest trainer at my practices. He still holds most of the track and field records, basketball and soccer records at my old high school and there’s a couple of things around town named after him.
Ernest Hebert. Just read one of his books, The Old American, and it's the best book I've read since Confederacy of Dunces. The fact that it's historical fiction makes it even more impressive. Ken Burns lives a few miles down the road, but he's pretty well known.
Certain attorneys and car dealers that advertise ALL the time! TV, billboards, busses, segments on the local news, etc. Also, the spokesperson for a big furniture store and one from a mattress store that went out of business years ago.
