So, Are Raw Shucked Packaged Gulf Oysters a Thing of the Past Now?

I can remember my first time eating fried oysters with my grandpa MANY moons ago and I've been hooked ever since. Up until a few years ago, I could buy a pull-can at Sams Club or a smaller one at local grocery stores. Now, I can't find them anywhere. I've read they've had a significant decline due to overfishing and the waters in the Gulf (of MEXICO!) getting warmer.
Really miss crunch-frying up a batch in the back yard. For the fellow Gulf oyster lovers out there, can you still find them in the stores? If so, WHERE! 😂

Umm, I don't know about canned, but you can get fresh ones at Tom Thumb or any local Asian grocer

Thanks, u/SaltySaltFace42. I've seen raw unshucked at Tom Thumb every once in a blue moon but I'm talking about the pre-shucked raw ones like in this photo

Need to find a proper seafood market, not one attached to a grocery store.

Central Market has shucked gulf oysters they run around $10 for and 8oz and around double that for 16 oz.
I would call ahead to make sure they are in stock just to be safe.
If you are in Houston,Galveston or Louisiana you can get 32oz containers shuked for a fair price.
You can find shukked Pacific oysters year round at the larger asian markets they usually run larger but they are a bit cheaper..

Central market and H‑E‑B carry shucked oysters. HEB has Jeri brand and are $10

I haven’t seen those in a while but Whole Foods used to carry them.

I will never eat another packaged, shucked oyster again. Worst food poisoning I ever had was from that clear packaged one in pic. Fresh or nothing.

Yeah there’s a reason they’re not common anymore.

I miss the days of going to the grocery store and finding a shrimp or oyster truck in the parking lot. They'd drive to the gulf, pick up fresh catch and be ready to sell mid-morning. There were crawdad trucks in the spring
We also got our firewood from the grocery parking lot too. They'd bring seasoned split wood down from OK, park and you could load it yourself for cheaper or they'd deliver and stack for a bit moreÂ

You are bringing back memories! When I lived in Houston as a kid, my dad and I and some other relatives would go deep-sea fishing out of Galveston. We'd leave early Saturday morning, catch fish and before heading home, there were guys out selling fresh jumbo shrimp. We'd pick up several pounds and would have a big family seafood fry that evening. Good times!

Those were the days! I was lucky enough to know a few people over the years that I lived near Surfside who were friends with local shrimpers. We would meet em at the dock and pay little to nothing (maybe a case of beer) for a few pounds of shrimp and a few fish.

Any grocery store or seafood market that has unshucked oysters will shuck them for you.

I would never buy oysters presucked and packaged. Sounds like a recipe for food poisoning. Shucked on demand to be cook later that day would be fine though.

The keystone light of oysters?

I just got 3 dozen yesterday shucked for me at Whole Foods, but they aren’t packaged like how you said. They are a $1 each usually and the other oysters a $1 each on Fridays with a prime membership.

Kroger typically has them.
