First Solo Today!

Flew my first solo today, just shy of 40hrs in my log book. I was off and on nervous up to this point. I had a general idea it was coming up (I took a knowledge test and flew with a different instructor). Winds were calm, plane performed well, cold chilly New England morning. Did pattern practice, landed, then my instructor hopped out and said to go do 3 touch and gos (I did four, lost count in the moment, oops)! It felt sorta anti climactic but I am excited to get past this milestone. Main thing going forward is working on continuing to build confidence in keeping myself and others safe. Big day so I’m happy to have gotten this far.

I soloed at 21 hours. I couldn't believe they just let me take a plane by myself🤣 I made the first crosswind turn and was like, wtf did i get myself into now? 🫠 The first lap the controller made me do two right 360 to give spacing for a T38 NASA jet coming in for landing. Had never done that before. Then they sequence me in and tell me to avoid wake turbulence. I made my landing, then the 2nd lap, they had another solo student who freaked out, getting onto the runway and canceled their takeoff, causing me to extend downwind until they cleared the runway. The third lap winds were now over 10kt crosswind. It was a day I will never forget. It was surreal. But here I am, studying for my checkride in a few weeks. Flying is the greatest accomplishment in my life. Hands down, nothing compares.

Wheels down, confidence up, now that’s success!
Kwowolok@reddit
Dumb question: I'm still a student pilot, and I'm not allowed to do touch and goes solo, only full stops. Is this not a universal rule?
WhiteoutDota@reddit
It is not, but the majority of schools and instructors require full stops. It is a bad idea to do touch and goes on your own as a student imo

Congratulations! Flying solo is such fun after flying so long in a training environment. Even stuck in the traffic pattern for a first solo, without the instructor sitting there, it’s like a taste of freedom.

The anti-climactic things is something that I feel like happens more often than not especially with DPE /checkrides.
Soon in a year or two you will look back and realize how big of a step that is. Weather your here for a job or fun. Those “firsts” will always be remembered.
Some firsts I wish I captured at least in photos were First time up with the family First time going somewhere with the plane First time with the loved ones
It sounds cheesy now but later you will thank you!
TheOneEyedPussy@reddit
My PP checkride was such a disaster I forgot to feel excited about being a private pilot until like a month after.
bhalter80@reddit
I posted about my CFI ride 18 months ago and passing was the most anti-climactic thing in my life. No joy, no happiness, just like an hour of relief on my way to drink until I couldn't remember it anymore (kidding not kidding)
b214n@reddit
I'm just above 30 hours and haven't solo'ed... I was beating myself up a little bit for not getting to it ~10 hours ago, so, thanks for making me feel better! And congrats!

Welcome to the club John is a solid instructor
SpartanDoubleZero@reddit
Congrats. The high from your first solo is tough to beat, the only thing that’s done it for me was my first solo XC. Such a great time just you, the plane and ATC, seeing and avoiding, all on your own.
LoungeFlyZ@reddit
That first feeling of climbing without the extra weight is pretty sweet.
Congrats!!
snacsnacsnac@reddit
I remember the first time I soloed and the plane took off really early. Thought the engine had some issues lol was too excited to think of the no extra weight
SeXySnEk7@reddit
Agreed I remember how that difference felt the first time I knew it'd climb better but I'd experienced it up to that point
I bet the first time in a jet is a similarly magical experience

Is that a pa piper 28 Cherokee?
maethor1337@reddit
Yep. You can look up the registration, N33847, just by Googling it. It’s a 1975 PA-28-140. Happy semicentennial!

Sick plane! How much and what kind? How lo do you have to fly to complete a legit so lo?
JasperinWaynesville@reddit
Congratulations. You should note in your logbook that you flew a Piper PA-28-140 around New Hampshire in the dead of winter. That should impress your DPE when you get to that point.
