In the fan vote for the rrhof, Phish is leading the vote getting close to 2-1.
Just curious how many know/ listen to them?
I'm a huge fan myself, and know stats and stuff that qualifies them, but I also know you basically need to be that huge fan to even know they exist

If they get in, I’ll be thrilled. If they don’t, it’s okay. Part of being a fan of this band is understanding that they often don’t appeal to people who are uninitiated to them. But for people who don’t know, it is worth saying that they are probably one of the hardest working bands out there before you even get into descriptors about their music. Same 4 guys have been grinding out gigs since their college dorm days in the early 80s.
That and they are inadvertently a tremendous influence on the music industry overall; the whole “weekend festival getaway” culture that happens every summer is more or less based on the experiences they’ve been procuring since the 90s.
They definitely deserve it but again, if they miss this round I won’t be heartbroken. They may not have penned any billboard chart hits, but there is something to be said about a band rising to the level of success they have without doing the aforementioned & virtually no radio play. They truly are a unique phenomenon if at the very least you observe them in a scientific way lol

I regard Phish as something like 2 of my favourite bands ever. Nofx and Enter Shikari.
Great at what they do and have a devoted loyal following. But unless you are a fan nobody has a clue who they are.
I couldn't name one Phish song

I know I "know" a handful of NOFX songs.
But I can't name one ... Good analogy
LumpyheadCarini2001@reddit
Never heard of them
elwood0341@reddit
They had a few songs I liked back in the day, but couldn’t get into a lot of their music. In another comment someone said they supposed to be the next Grateful Dead. For me they’re exactly the same, a couple of songs I like and the rest unlistenable.

To "get" either band, you really gotta see a live performance...
Then, you still might not get them...
Long story short, a bunch of us followed the surviving members of the dead in 09, a female friend leans over to me at one point at the first show and asks" when is the first song over?", as they were ending the first set.
She didn't stay on the road with us

I was slightly exaggerating about The Dead, I like more than a handful of their songs. But they do have quite a lot that I can’t stand. I didn’t know they were still touring in 2009. In 89 my 17yo sister went to see them, got ditched by her friends at the concert, and hooked up with a dude selling bracelets out of his VW van. Travelled with him for the rest of the tour until he ditched her somewhere in the south. Maybe Kansas.

There have been multiple variations of "the dead" since Jerry passed." The other ones", "the dead" and "fare the well" all included the core four, Phil, bobby, billy and mickey. Phil had a long standing "Phil and friends" that had various musicians join, Bobby had ratdog, billy and mickey, the rhythm devil's, Phil and Bobby had "furthur", and Bobby, Billy and mickey started dead and company in 2015 after fare the well, which was a 50th anniversary 3 city tour.
Billy dropped out of d&c for health reasons, Phil recently passed away,...
Oh...I mean, I really like the dead 😂🤣😂

I can’t stand Phish, they are just not my thing, but hope they get in for their fans.
ZanzerFineSuits@reddit
I listen to and like them, seen them several times live, their albums are constantly on rotation in my house, but they are not Rock Hall worthy IMO. They have a very devoted fan base, that’s why they’re leading.
It’s also a pretty weak list this year, not a lot to get excited about.

I'm torn on the "deserve to be in" myself
Longevity, yes.
Impact?
That's questionable.
The bakers dozen is my best example here, 13 nights, hundreds of songs, no repeats, longest residency in msg history... But then harry styles did 14 days( though not the "no repeat".)
If a dedicated fan base is all it takes, Donna the buffalo is just as worthy 🤷

I never cared for them and I’m a Deadhead. Bad Company, Checker, Cocker, and Joy Division should get in first. New Order should be a separate nomination.
Tralfaz1138@reddit
Yeah, I thought it was a little weird they are putting Joy Division and New Order in as the same group. I mean, I get it but don't agree with it.
As for Phish, I've known the name, but had to look up their songs and really didn't recognize any. I listen to a lot of different music, but somehow they just didn't pop up on the stations I listened to I guess.
AHippieDude@reddit (OP)
Pressure for them to be "the next dead" put a lot of deadheads off of them even though they never really tried, or wanted that role. But I'm 30 years in and know not everybody likes licorice... With that said, cocker and checker should be in already.
fishstock@reddit
I have heard of them and checked their music out since they have compared to the Grateful Dead which I'm a fan of. Chubby Checker, Billy Idol, and Bad Company should be inducted before they are.
RogueStatesman@reddit
My brother in law toured with them for years and I still have no idea what they sound like. I just know they're huge.
Crushed_Robot@reddit
I listen to them.
WarZone2028@reddit
I'm not a huge fan but I followed the dead for a while and that community clued me to the existence of Phish and a number of other bands of that genre.
