Secondary, flexible, not-too-expensive nuclear strike capability. To back up the M51 submarines. After the end of Cold War France scrapped all others nuclear delivery systems: AN-52 tac nukes, Pluton & Hades MRBM, Plateau d'Albion IRBMs.

It still blows my mind that they scrap those things instead of selling them to collectors.

I need more long-exposure nighttime jet photos in my life desperately!!

France's Navy Rafale M armed with Supersonic nuclear cruise missile ASMP-A/R 300kt which has a range of at least 600km on board of Nuclear aircraft carrier Charles DeGaule.
The devlopment of the ANS4G that will take over from the ASMP/A-R will enter into its 3rd phase ahead of schedule that nuclear vector will be hypersonic with speed approaching Mach 9 or 10. The range will far exceed 1000km. The yield of the warhead will be adaptable between 75Kt to 600Kt this will give more flexibility of use against the current fixed choice. Those ''new'' nuclear warhead are produced by TechnicAtome.
The VMAX program advance well aswell with new live test expected soon.

Hiroshima was 12kt...
Powerup_Rentner@reddit
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were both small fry compared to any modern nuclear weapon. The development of the hydrogen bomb or even just boosted fission weapons made sure of that.
Arkaid11@reddit
The warhead is developed by CEA. The missile itself is MBDA.
My_Soul_to_Squeeze@reddit
Missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, but almost certainly not. Nuclear powered aircraft carrier.
Cool picture, but your title in sensationalist drivel.
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
This is technically lots of USN vessels and USAF planes with their “we will neither confirm nor deny” strategic ambiguity BS which is the reason they aren’t allowed into New Zealand.
My_Soul_to_Squeeze@reddit
Yeah. The title of this post is akin to calling every Arleigh Burke or Tico class ship NuClEaR just because they have VLS tubes for TLAM.
Hadri1_Fr@reddit
There are other exercises where the war head is acually in the cruise missile and the missile is put on the Rafale, but the Rafale never takes off for obvious safety reasons.
My_Soul_to_Squeeze@reddit
Ok... but this one is about to take off, so unless France is running L’opération Chrome Dome 25, it's a safe bet there's no nuke in the photo.

I know there's a r/NATOwave .....is there a r/NATOrave ?

Nu-cu-lar! It's pronounced nu-cu-lar!
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
No it’s not…

600kt has a concrete structure destruction radius of 2 Miles. Meaning you could blast this 2 miles from the target and still annihilate it.
blastmanager@reddit
How far away to just lightly sauté it?
Old-Simple7848@reddit
If you can ignore the blast, likely 0.5 miles to crispy perfection.

Here's an interesting little fact: The French and US navies use basically the same catapult and arresting gear systems, so sometimes US aircraft operate from the Charles de Gaulle and French aircraft operate from US carriers.
Baizuo88@reddit
And french navy pilots learn how to land on aircraft carriers in the US.
