Stole this from FuckImOld, but totally worth it!

How many of you were peelers? Were you a chunker, a stringer?
jjhart827@reddit
Mountain Dew in the glass bottle hit different.
Warring_Angel@reddit
The Gatorade too. They were practically health foods back then :D
Economy-Mango7875@reddit
Core memory unlocked. We had Pepsi at my house. I got in trouble bringing one into school with my lunch in grade school
ladyliferules@reddit
Yes!!
Relevant_Wrangler830@reddit
Used to peel the top part off down to where the bottle was straight. Then slide the label down a ways and slap the bottom part of the label to the bottle and the air pressure would split the label and make a noticeable "pop".
literanch@reddit
I had forgotten all about this but I can instantly remember the doing this back in the day.
DerbGentler@reddit
I'm your old, but I don't remember any styrofoam labels.
What I remember is the collectible pictures inside of the caps.
In Germany they were called "Knibbelbilder". 😆
And I had one from the band Toto.
EDIT: Here is the German Wikipedia article (as there is none in English): Knibbelbilder
HylanderUS@reddit
Oh man, came here to say this, I remember the knibbelbilder vividly :)
DerbGentler@reddit
Great to see other Knibbelbilder-Fans around here! \^\^
(The English word for "Knibbelbilder" would be "Peel-out pictures".)
This site (also in German, but translatable) is an awesome tome of knowledge and pictures:
Retro Cult "Knibbelbilder"
SaveusJebus@reddit
Definitely peeled.
OMG I remember feeling like it was extra special getting the little bottles.
nochumplovesucka__@reddit
These were popular when I was a kid in the 80s. They seemingly went plastic sometime in the 90s,I can't specifically remember exactly when.
We used to make muriatic acid bombs with the old glass bottles, plastic didn't work.
bigSTUdazz@reddit
ASMR before ASMR was a thing.
IceSmiley@reddit
The labels were made of styrofoam? I remember they were like strong wrap plastic
RipErRiley@reddit
I’m a xennial (born in ‘79) but the glass soda’s were not in my orbit. Maybe a tad before my time.
Pisstoffo@reddit
It must’ve been location or just memory not sticking. I’m the same age and remember them fondly (idiot parents let me drink pop and watch rated R movies WAY too early)
RipErRiley@reddit
I remember coke bottle ls but generally, on the fly, we had plastic bottled dew. Maybe you’re right
Pisstoffo@reddit
Man, the glass bottle and styrofoam labels were amazing. I peeled a little string from the top but could never get it all the way to the end.
Defnotabotok@reddit
I’d tear them into strips and stuff them in the bottle and pretend I had a Molotov cocktail.
Tony_Tanna78@reddit
I almost always peeled it off and sometimes put the waste in the bottle after finishing off the soda.
FestiveArtCollective@reddit
I was a total peeler. I loved the cruncy sound.
IamREBELoe@reddit
I'd forgotten that existed
Funkopedia@reddit
I think New York Seltzer may still have that type of label
neems_79@reddit
New York Seltzer is the OG!
robkillian@reddit
NY seltzer
jbmyre@reddit
These were 25 cents, even a broke, white trash 10 year old like myself could live like a king.
TheLoneliestGhost@reddit
The best was when you could make it into a perfect curly tail!

I saw the tail end of what Canadians called the glass "Stubby bottle." Beer used to be sold that way too. It should probably be more mainstream again considering how well glass breaks down and recycles.
p90rushb@reddit
One of my first memories was grabbing a styrofoam-wrapped coke with two hands in the passenger seat of my dad's 1978 Chevy c10 Scottsdale. It was super heavy.
MOSbangtan@reddit
Gotta say I don’t recall this!
seaska84@reddit
Soda tasted better too.
canikatthedisco@reddit
Remember doing this any time my mom would bring a pack of New York Seltzer home, (also remember thinking that stuff was "ritzy")
OpinelNo8@reddit
These were the best to shoot with bb guns because the styrofoam held the broken glass in place enough to get two or three shots on it instead of one.
wantsomechips@reddit
Those old mountain dew bottles, they always had a promotion going where you could look under the cap and win free drinks. I won so many Mtn dews when I was younger.
Electrical-Pie-8192@reddit
Yup. NY Seltzer blackberry
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
Peel off the label and then smash the bottle. You're damn right I have regrets l
idleat1100@reddit
I had absolutely forgotten about that. And immediately it all came back. Ha
omartje@reddit
You did not steel . We call it “long term borrowing” 😉
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
It's "Strategic Transfer of Equipment to an Alternate Location".
omartje@reddit
That’s beautiful !
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
It is, indeed. One of the more useful acronyms I picked up in my time in the Navy. Not sure how old it is, but I can tell you for certain it dates back farther than 1957, which is when my Pops first heard it in his Boot Camp.
omartje@reddit
😄👍🏻
DustedGorilla82@reddit
My grand parents always had the glass bottles of 7 up in the fridge. The small ones.
supguy99@reddit
Styrofoam label?
OkPie8905@reddit
Core memory of how details like label texture can be comfortable.
DottyBelle@reddit
Were they sold in doses? Coz they are packed in liquid medicine bottles
Newyew22@reddit
I can still feel it under my fingernail.
Jolly_Line@reddit
💯 brain fully dropped this. Thanks for the memory.
bahaki@reddit
Was definitely a label peeler, but I'd also break off the little perforated parts of the screw-off glass bottle top.
