Have a mostly completed build, GPU market is insanity though.

Have a Hyte Y70 case and X3D CPU. Last part i need is a GPU and I'm wondering, what would you guys do if you wanted around 4090/5080 performance? Wait for market to cool down? Try and find an ebay deal for 4090?
Everything is way over MSRP but I'd really like to finish my new PC. Just conflicted about paying over 2k for a 4090 at this point.
Camilea@reddit
A lot of people are buying the 7900 XTX instead
fatalrip@reddit
It’s what I did. Bonus is it has 3 reliable 8 pin power connectors and ray tracing about as good as my 3080.
giddycocks@reddit
Uff, hard pass then. The 3080 is weak at ray tracing and AMD is effectively moving forward with the 9070 having dedicated FSR 4.
Novel_Efficiency_941@reddit
Do you play every game with rt on?
grayscale001@reddit
What card is good at raytracing?
I-am-deeper@reddit
in mid range price: 4070 Ti and RX 7800 XT
SupportDangerous8207@reddit
At ray tracing specifically the 4070ti will trade blows with the 7900xtx
TheGuyInDarkCorner@reddit
They are same price as well (atleast in europe)
SupportDangerous8207@reddit
This is true
If I was buying a new gpu I would buy a 7900xtx for the same price as a 4070ti
But I wouldn’t buy a 7800xt for the same price as a 4070ti
AdGroundbreaking6025@reddit
top half of the 40/50 series is regarded as the best rt cards out
_barat_@reddit
It's worse then 3080 and even worse when PT kicks in. Also, nv users can use DLSS 4.0 balanced vs FSR Quality and still have a better image quality. I think NV just won a lot with the recent DLSS and FG improvements being backward compatible. Unfortunately FSR4.0 (whenever it'll come) will not be. So if the games will continue to have RT and PT as separate options 7900xtx users should be fine, but who knows what'll come.
dcjt57@reddit
Bros spreading misinformation the 7900xt does ray tracing better than the 3080ti and the 7900xtx is much better let’s do some quick math rq since i gotta break it down for u that means its > (better) than the 3080
Elitefuture@reddit
With how bad our ray tracing currently is, by the time pt is fully usable, our rt chips will be waaayyy faster than the 5090 in rt specifically.
We're still heavily restricting how many rays there are, how many bounces they do, the resolution of the textures get decreased, and there is a pretty big delay in the reflection.
By the time rt can both fix these issues AND not tank our performance, our rt cores will be way ahead of what we currently have. Nothing we buy now will live your pt dream. Our pt isn't even the final goal and it cripples the 5090.
HybridPS2@reddit
RT isn't ready for prime time, correct. It's still a gimmick imo.
Fredasa@reddit
I also feel it's a gimmick and am frankly dismayed that after two more generations they've barely moved the needle on what's required to change that.
But there is also absolutely no denying that Cyberpunk 2077 looks a hell of a lot better with it on. And it's also still possible to get a snappy 4K60 even with RT fully implemented, and without framegen (*hack* *spit*).
The reason it's still a gimmick is because if you ignore Cyberpunk—the literal GPU-sweating replacement for Crysis—there's not much left to talk about. In other games, you can pretty much take it or leave it, and when you take it, it's only because you can still get your target framerate with it, full stop.
HybridPS2@reddit
Well now there are games where RT is the only option. They say it makes game development faster, but with all that time saved not doing rasterized lighting, are we going to get better mechanics and fewer bugs? I doubt it.
Good_Policy3529@reddit
I had the same dilemma as OP. I got the 7900XTX and no regrets at all.
Ray tracings overrated lol.
LiXarder@reddit
How much did you pay? I can get it for 891€ and the 9070 xt might come out around that price so Idk... Can you run anything without issues? I'd like to try 2k 165 fps/4k 60 fps
Good_Policy3529@reddit
I got it for $999 USD, which was about 15% off MSRP for the model I got. (The Sapphire Nitro+).
Heck yes, I can run anything in 4K at 80 or 90 FPS, and most of the time even higher.
I've never tried 2K, but I bet I could get 165 FPS if I went with high instead of ultra.
True_Implement_@reddit
Yeah Ray Tracing is not the issue but DLSS 4 is black magic.
FinancialRip2008@reddit
not the worst outcome. there's a lot of instances where ray tracing looks worse, once you're in motion. and that's ignoring the impact to frame rate.
dmlonghorn@reddit
Where are people finding them, everything I see is sold out except for $1500 and up
Camilea@reddit
I don't know, and that would also depend on what country you're in. Where I live, Amazon and Newegg have a trickle of supply sometimes, it's just that demand is high so they get bought out.
DanStarTheFirst@reddit
Been backordered since 50 series dropped lol
ensignlee@reddit
There's an ASRock one on newegg in stock right now.
DanStarTheFirst@reddit
Still rocking cheap 3090 I got for way too cheap but buddy guy wants to get a 7900xtx but he’s waiting to see what RDNA4 is like.
allhailgogmazios@reddit
Took me over a month before I got the 6750xt I needed for my mother's build. Ordered on December 30th, received early February
Far-Rip-8551@reddit
I just got a barely used 4070 super for $500 off of facebook marketplace. Guy didnt need the upgrade and just wanted his money back if you hunt long enough and are patient you will eventually find a fair deal. So second hand if you find the right price now or wait basically.
RomanDoesIt@reddit
Why on earth would you pay 2k for 4090 when 5090 has that price tag? If you have a decent GPU now, just use that while hunting for the 50-series. At least that's my plan for my new build I'm working on now. There must be some incoming as last drop was a while ago. Pics of the build are appreciated too! 😉
LongNo7305@reddit
Same lol, I have a top tier setup, but still my 1060 since idk what to do with the 1300€ 5070ti that's getting released . It's crazy
New_Distribution9202@reddit
If you can hold out the 9070 should be out in March if I'm not mistaken
UtahImTaller@reddit (OP)
That's my plan right now.
I've been so tempted to impulse purchase 4090s on ebay, but I just can't out of principle right now. Everyone is charging way over what it's actually worth.
zhire653@reddit
I just built a pc for my friend and yeah, the GPU market is completely fucked atm. What I did for him was bought a 4060 for 300$. Yeah it’s not a great card for the fps/$ but it’ll hold him over at 1080p. The plan is to wait for the market to stabilize and then he can either sell it or if he gets lucky enough to get a 5070 then he can just return the 4060.
iyzak2089@reddit
I recently bought a PC for this same reason the GPU market is insane! I bought one with all the stuff I wanted but lower end GPU, planning to sell it and buy the one I want later , nothing on your level I'm more of a 4070 super ti budget, I also don't have a system at all ATM so something is better than nothing in my case, you could do what I did essentially buy a cheaper to get something running then swap it later
you_better_dont@reddit
If you are willing to buy a 5080 + PSU bundle, it is possible to get them with the right strategy. Still, if you don’t need the PSU, then it’s a raw deal. I got a MSI Ventus OC from the MSI store by keeping a very close watch on stock tracking discords.
Other than that, yeah shit is cooked right now. I considered a used 4090 or 4080 super, but they’re overpriced and come with no warranty.
If you don’t need the latest and greatest, ZOTAC has been listing 3080 and 3080Ti in their refurb store for a decent price (less than eBay). Those come with a 90 day warranty.
foramperandi@reddit
Second this. 5080s are going into stock 3-4 times more than 5090s and stay in stock longer. Join one of the stock tracking discords and you shouldn't have that much problem getting a 5080.
Abject_Yak1678@reddit
If you're willing to buy a 5080/PSU combo and return the PSU you bought, it's pretty easy to acquire a 5080 if you just sign up for a few stock alerts and stay on top of things. 5090's on the other hand are basically like unicorns at the moment unless you wanna spend $4000+ on a bundle with a $1000 monitor.
Memoryadept223@reddit
Haha literally in the same spot right now! Have every part ordered except for the GPU. I am going team red but still wondering between 7900xt, 7900xtx and 9070xt
Mastermind521@reddit
Unless you spot an XTX under $1000 just wait for 9070xt benchmarks
Memoryadept223@reddit
Actually have my eyes on one a little under 1k
Mastermind521@reddit
Just order it if you can. Most places have return policy anyways. Might as well get something in hand and then youd technically have 30 days to find something else or decide to keep it
dsinsti@reddit
Same boat here.Any news on B770?
PureWolfie@reddit
You buy a 9070XT on release around the beginning of March with hopefully no fire hazards.
Ludicrits@reddit
Let's be real. It's gonna be the same situation with that card too.
j_reinegade@reddit
I’m not so sure . I’ve spoke to retailers and while they won’t confirm the incoming inventory #s they promise it’s going to be much much more than the nvidia cards. The supply should match the demand a lot better. Which hopefully means less issues will scalpers.
MarxistMan13@reddit
Word is that the 9070 / XT have been ready to go for quite a while. There should be a good first stock.
Ludicrits@reddit
I always hopeful. More gpus is only a good thing. I just see the market right now and can't help but think the demand for the highest end cards is just too high right now.
MarxistMan13@reddit
If you don't want to spend $2000 on a 4090/5090, then don't. You probably don't need that level of performance.
egotripping@reddit
Yeah, I kind of feel like a fool with my new rig that has a 4060 paired with a 9800x3d, but I'm just not going to pay these absurd prices right now. I'll wait it out til things normalize. If that takes a year whatever, tbh I've been a lot more impressed with a 4060 than I thought I would in 1440p.
Grenlar@reddit
Don't feel too bad. My parts just started arriving for my 9800x3d build today and I don't have a new GPU yet. I am going to put my 1080 GTX in it and wait to take my chances when the 9070xt drops.
chipface@reddit
You'll just have to wait. I had most of my current build ready to go at the end of 2020 but had to wait until the end of February 2021 until I finally got my GPU. I'm in the same situation now and have to wait again.
Active-Quarter-4197@reddit
there is nothing really comparable to the 5080 other than the 4080s but that is a 15 decrease in performance around 20+ percent when both are oced. 4090 is the same issue but worse bc it is even faster than the 4090.
5070 ti is going to be 4080s/7900 xtx level and the 9700 xt will probably fall in that range.
U could pray the 9070 xt exceeds expectations but that is it.
LegitimatelisedSoil@reddit
Used 4090s aren't a good option unless you hate money rn.
SayAnythingAgain@reddit
I had the 7900 XT before returning it for the XTX a few months ago. My first AMD cards. Both cards are amazing. Zero complaints. Playing everything at High/Ultra on a 49" Ultrawide (5120x1440) and the XTX wasn't a big upgrade from the XT. I'd totally get the 7900 XT so and upgrade later. Only downside with AMD is heavy ray tracing isn't gonna go well and DLSS is better than FSR to purists, but FSR is fine to me.
Else I'd wait for 9070 XT or 5070ti when they become readily available in the next 3-6 months.
heisenberg149@reddit
Which monitor is that? I've been thinking about going the ultrawide route lately
SayAnythingAgain@reddit
Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED (G95SC). The monitor display itself is really great. Everything you'd expect from an OLED. I hear it doesn't get bright enough for some. The OS is cumbersome and switching inputs can be frustrating. I also use it for work and personal so if you stick to 1 input you would probably never notice.
Outside of that it's really nice, but I think if I would do it again I might spend a little less (I paid just under $1k for mine) and get something with a great display and less bells and whistles. Ultrawide is worth it though.
Dunmordre@reddit
You can try Geforce Now for a month or two until things settle down. The 9070 looks like it could be stellar but wait for comparison reviews.
wotoan@reddit
Month and six month passes sold out. 11 bucks a day pass available. Fuuuuuuck that to play games I already own.
Dunmordre@reddit
Wow, yeah, that's a lot. There are alternatives, but if you buy a month on Geforce now it's much cheaper last time I looked.
Logical_Strain_6165@reddit
It's a lot better then most people expect.
meppel@reddit
Yes can confirm, I put about 20 hours into Path of Exile 2 on my Steam Deck with Geforce Now on vacation, felt awesome.
Stonesneakers@reddit
Wait for 9070xt or go with 7900xt or 7900xtx
Snoockles@reddit
I feel you. I’ve been building and GPU was the last piece. Today I ordered a 7800 XT for ~$550. But I’m also upgrading from a 3060 so this is still a major upgrade. Top of the line cards just weren’t even a thought
ppondem@reddit
if i were building a rig right now I'd go with a 4070ti Super or something like that. Best bang for your buck performance wise and less than half the cost of a 4090.
ensignlee@reddit
Get a 7900xtx. Either used or whenever it pops into availability on /r/buildapcsales (there's an ASRock one right now as of 9:42 AM CST on Saturday Feb 15th).
saboay@reddit
I had the same dilemma back when the 40 series was launched. Waited a bit and nothing, prices did not drop one bit.
Just bite the bullet. I bought a 4080 at the time.
B_U_F_U@reddit
If you can, wait for stabilization. If you can’t, use a card that can hold you over for now and… wait for stabilization.
I was able to snag a 7900xt since I’m building a new pc, but tbh that’s my placeholder until things balance a bit. I may or may not pull the trigger on a new card.
Then-Wrongdoer4957@reddit
Wanted to build an PC a year ago. Was able to save enough money for a very nice build. Waited until Black Friday 2024. Most of the parts i wanted wasnt even cheaper. Everyone told me to wait for 50 series GPU's so i waited.
I cannot wait much longer so i bought an 5080 (TUF) yesterday on ebay for 1700€ . Last year i could have got a 4090 for the same price.
But right now 4090's are way to expensive. And 4080 Super aswell.
I didnt know anything about GeForce Now until today.
I think the best options are buying a 7900XTX or waiting until summer (or longer) to get 50 series cards for "normal" prices and use some cloud gaming services.
I know i spent way to much, but its the only expensive thing i bought in the last years for myself.
I learned this: If i build another PC in 5 years im gonna buy it in the summer because prices are lowest. And i will just buy whats avaiable and i dont wait for next gen.
Real_Timeyy@reddit
Ouch! 1700€ 5080! Crazy
Then-Wrongdoer4957@reddit
Your right
Real_Timeyy@reddit
Well, at least you are happy with it. I bought a 5090 for 3100€ on official retailer at launch day so it's not like i did better compared to you... Market is completely broken right now. I'm still waiting to get it shipped too. What a mess
Seliculare@reddit
How the tables have turned haha I used to beg my American friend to buy me 3070 in 2021 and he did at a micro center for the msrp. Now Americans need European friends to buy GPU for them. 4080 super is still wildly available, just at dumb European tax prices (1500€). 4070ti super is a good deal though (at around 800€-850€).
KevSykes5141@reddit
I was so lucky, i bought a 4090 1 month ago for 750€, didnt like the model, sold it for 1500€ and picked up a windforce 4090 for 1500€ like new.
But right now, some people here want like 2400€ which is just nuts.
Right now the patience game begins. In a few weeks reddit will be filled with: got my 5090 for 2000 bucks blabla.
Do not fear missing out. Even buying like a 2080 or something right now, which is available for like 250€ here to just skip time is way better than paying those inflated prices right now.
bifowww@reddit
RTX 4090 won't go down soon. RTX 5090 and 5080 will also stay at scalper price for a long time after release. People are currently going crazy for the AI so you dont compete with just gamers anymore. It's similar to the crypto mining era, where GPUs were listed by AIB for much more than MSRP. However there aren't as many people who buy GPUs for AI in the USA or Europe than in China. Unfortunately scalpers made it much worse, because they drive sales of high end GPUs at high price so retailers have no reason to discount them. Market will eventually cool down later this year, but if you plan to get a new GPU this year for the best price you must wait for August/September, but don't wait too long, because all tech goes up in price right before November. Personally I would go for the previous generation right now, because it's also heavily overpriced due to low stock and discontinued production. I hope for the AMD 9070 series to offer good RayTracing performance, because it's always easier to find AMD cards in stock.
PutridFlatulence@reddit
It's just a terrible time to buy a GPU right now, even the 7900XTX that were widely available for under $900 a month ago have seem to have disappeared. Everything at the high end is currently overpriced and low in supply.
opensrcdev@reddit
It's not the best time to buy a GPU honestly. We're waiting for NVIDIA to get adequate stock of the 5090, 5080, and soon the 5070. That's causing the 4000 series to experience high prices as well. Give it a few more weeks, at least.
REDNOOK@reddit
Looking at 5090 and 4090 prices I figured I'd cut my losses and get a 3090 because it's still looking real nice in comparison to my 3060 laptop ... Even THAT is still ridiculously overpriced. I think I'm going next gen Radeon.
Pajer0king@reddit
If you have the money and peace to pay 2000$ for a gpu, you can pay 3000$ as well. Not the end of the world.
