What a Time to be Alive

In the current year, we can ship our poop somewhere and have them assess our propensity to develop a serious illness. These are the kinds of things I’d allude to being able to do in the future were I to ever have a chance to dip out in a Time Machine. I’d give no small amount to go back and tell my grandfathers why they were fighting in a global conflict.

Yeah but (in the US) it will cost you tens of thousands of dollars to treat that serious illness.

Weird, I’ve never had a single issue with insurance & healthcare. I must be far more savvy than everyone you’re talking about.

You must have a gold-plated insurance plan provided by your employer. That’s not being savvy—it’s something else. My wife and I are self employed, so we pay $30,000 a year for a high-deductible plan with a $7,500 deductible each. So if we were to require surgery, it would cost us at least that much and probably more. The person you responded to is not wrong. It can cost you tens of thousands of dollars for treatment, and that’s after the tens of thousands it costs each year for coverage. I’ve paid literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in insurance premiums in the 16 years I’ve been self-employed. I could have paid off my mortgage by now and have an extra $100,000 in the bank.

I thought obamacare fixed this

Obamacare made it so I could purchase insurance, but it didn’t solve affordability for people who are self-employed but not poor. Before Obamacare, I could not buy health insurance at any price in some states due to pre-existing conditions. I could buy it in the state where I live, but only in extremely expensive high-risk pools. Obamacare made it so I could buy insurance at the same price as other people even with a pre-existing condition without having to qualify through medical underwriting. Before that, people could be denied coverage or have their policies cancelled if they were sick or got sick. So it solved that problem, and it solved affordability problems for poor people, but it’s still very expensive if your employer does not pay for most of your insurance or you are not poor enough to recieve tax credits for your premiums or other subsidies. Most people who have insurance through their employers do not realize that the tax code subsidizes their insurance, and their employer covers tens of thousands of dollars of their premiums. If they had to buy their same employer health plan through the private insurance market, they would be shocked by what it costs. They think the employee contribution taken from their paycheck covers it. Usually, it’s not even close.

And if they find anything you’ll likely still have to get a colonoscopy. My advice, take the pills not the goop.

Whenever I’m having a bad day at work I remember that there are people who work the mail room at cologuard
Thirsty-Barbarian@reddit
That’s exactly what I thought as I was pooping in the box, “What a time to be alive!”
PragmaticPrime@reddit
A lot better than doggie bagging it to the doctor's office.
ShimmyxSham@reddit
It is a good time to be alive, but my first thought wouldn’t be about 💩

IKR. Before clicking into the feed I was expecting something about AI, electric battery storage tech, smartphones, alien disclosure, #me too, biohacking, quantum computing, easy access to equity trading….wasn't gonna guess poop analysis.
homework-munky@reddit
I failed the poop test after reluctantly taking it. (probably because i stayed up all night cramming for it).
The convo with the doctor “happens all the time” wasn’t as reassuring as you’d think.
