Koalas are fucking horrible animals. They have one of the smallest brain to body ratios of any mammal, additionally - their brains are smooth. A brain is folded to increase the surface area for neurons. If you present a koala with leaves plucked from a branch, laid on a flat surface, the koala will not recognise it as food. They are too thick to adapt their feeding behaviour to cope with change. In a room full of potential food, they can literally starve to death. This is not the token of an animal that is winning at life. Speaking of stupidity and food, one of the likely reasons for their primitive brains is the fact that additionally to being poisonous, eucalyptus leaves (the only thing they eat) have almost no nutritional value. They can't afford the extra energy to think, they sleep more than 80% of their fucking lives. When they are awake all they do is eat, shit and occasionally scream like fucking satan. Because eucalyptus leaves hold such little nutritional value, koalas have to ferment the leaves in their guts for days on end. Unlike their brains, they have the largest hind gut to body ratio of any mammal. Many herbivorous mammals have adaptations to cope with harsh plant life taking its toll on their teeth, rodents for instance have teeth that never stop growing, some animals only have teeth on their lower jaw, grinding plant matter on bony plates in the tops of their mouths, others have enlarged molars that distribute the wear and break down plant matter more efficiently... Koalas are no exception, when their teeth erode down to nothing, they resolve the situation by starving to death, because they're fucking terrible animals. Being mammals, koalas raise their joeys on milk (admittedly, one of the lowest milk yields to body ratio... There's a trend here). When the young joey needs to transition from rich, nourishing substances like milk, to eucalyptus (a plant that seems to be making it abundantly clear that it doesn't want to be eaten), it finds it does not have the necessary gut flora to digest the leaves. To remedy this, the young joey begins nuzzling its mother's anus until she leaks a little diarrhoea (actually fecal pap, slightly less digested), which he then proceeds to slurp on. This partially digested plant matter gives him just what he needs to start developing his digestive system. Of course, he may not even have needed to bother nuzzling his mother. She may have been suffering from incontinence. Why? Because koalas are riddled with chlamydia. In some areas the infection rate is 80% or higher. This statistic isn't helped by the fact that one of the few other activities koalas will spend their precious energy on is rape. Despite being seasonal breeders, males seem to either not know or care, and will simply overpower a female regardless of whether she is ovulating. If she fights back, he may drag them both out of the tree, which brings us full circle back to the brain: Koalas have a higher than average quantity of cerebrospinal fluid in their brains. This is to protect their brains from injury... should they fall from a tree. An animal so thick it has its own little built in special ed helmet. I fucking hate them.
Tldr; Koalas are stupid, leaky, STI riddled sex offenders. But, hey. They look cute. If you ignore the terrifying snake eyes and terrifying feet.
I had a Snuggle fabric softener bear clip. Found it at a small store that had magazines and sundries in a strip mall on Sawmill Road in Columbus, Ohio in 1988.
I just did a search for them, and you can buy them on Amazon. I was going to get some, But talked myself out of it. I did add them to my wish list tho...
I got them as a reward at school circa 78-80 and loved them so much! I became a school librarian and a few years ago I was in charge of the βschool storeβ- behavioral incentives for token economy dollars. The koala clips were the first thing I got for school store and the kids LOVED them!
Iβm neurodivergent and I have sensory processing disorder. I tend to remember things like smells and textures. Thanks for the memories, OP. I can even remember that thing pinching my finger.
Ok story time!! When I was in kindergarten (1990-1991) my teacher went to Australia over Christmas break and brought one back for the whole classβ¦ they had little yellow vests that said βFeatherdaleβ (zoo in aus apparently? I live in Florida). She was one of my fav teachers ever and I love that little koala but of course I was 5 so I eventually lost it
So anyway fast forward to 2012 I finished my teaching degree and got hired for my first job and I ask a custodian to move a heavy bookshelf on my very first day in my new classroomβ¦ there was a koala with the SAME Featherdale koala!!! π₯²
I clipped it on my desk lamp and itβs been there ever since.
I had a bunch of these. A local restaurant, Scheldeβs, would give them away with kids meals. I had a raccoon, a fox and a couple of other animals. I loved them!
I have mine hanging on my desk microphone! My best friend in elementary school was from Australia and brought me one after he went home for a while, so itβs legit lol.
My wife and I leave it around the house for each other to find at odd times. We might go weeks without finding it, but once you do, you gotta rehide it.
Pretty sure I got my Koala clips from Girl Scouts? One year, the rewards from cookie sales were all Australian Safari themed. The more cookies you sold the bigger and better your rewards would be. Anyone else remember that?
My cousins and I would play a game of hot and cold with that. My Grandma would hide it and we would hunt around looking for it! Simpler times, but it kept us entertained. Thanks to the OP. I hadnβt thought about that for years:)
Iβve had one clipped on the shade of a lamp that has been on my nightstand for over 30 years, three moves, more life changes than I can name. But that little bear has been on my lamp.
I clipped one on the bottom of my teacherβs blazer during English class to crack up my friends, then spent the rest of class trying to get it back. I failed. Had to walk up to him after class, unclip it and just walk away with no explanation π He was a good guy
You can still by these by the dozens in souvenir ships in Australia, they are super cheap too, also I looked an OFC you can get them online from your vendor of choice. They didn't go anywhere
I bought a large bag of them at the Sydney tower gift shop, wearing a βI β€οΈ Australiaβ vest. They made great gifts for everyone back home. 4 koalas are part of my Xmas tree decorations.
I remember those! After losing several to my father's confiscation (those are for girls) I learned to take them off and hide them before he got home, then put them on again when I got to school.
It made the alcoholic teacher in my junior whoβd slam kids into walls smile and laugh. But only if you showed him before lunch time. But seeing as he had lunch duty of about a hundred or so kids going through puberty, Iβm not going to judge him for the drinking. Just the slamming kids against walls part
I had a massive collection of koalas as a kid, I started with my parents taking me to the San Diego zoo for my sixth birthday and getting me this. Which of course, I still have. This is Charlie.
I totally have that bear! She's fancy. My massive koala collection started when my dad brought me a real fur koala from Australia when I was 5. We should be besties ;)
A friend of my grandmother's gave me one that he bought at a yard sale. I had for ages but passed it along to some guy I was dating which I regret now.
I have a unicorn one thatβs been on the light bulb side of my overhead ceiling fan/light since I was a 10. Itβs been through 4 house moves across many states and still tells me which chain is the light every day. 40 years. Iβm hoping Iβll never have to replace it.
I still have a Godzilla one my dad gave me when I was 5. He loved Godzilla and so do I. I nicknamed my daughter Katzilla because she would emulate Godzilla when she was a kid like that scene in Lilo & Stitch and the nickname stuck.
I had the panda when I was in 5th grade. I named her Lydia & made a whole little shoebox house with furniture for her. My sister had the koala. I still have mine somewhere.
Have a great story about one of these. I bought one at the San Diego zoo, and I was wearing it on the shoulder strap of my tank top. I leaned close to a cage that had a bunch of little monkeys in it, and one of the monkeys reached through the fence and grabbed the koala. He did not want to let it go. Luckily, the opening in the bars was too small for the koala to fit, so I got to keep my souvenir!
I had one that was a cherished possession. My fourth grade teacher took it away because it was briefly on my desk (with other things) while I was getting something out of my desk. She said I could have it back at the end of the school year (it was still first term), but by that time, it wasn't in her contraband box anymore. I still mourn it and wish I'd gotten my parents involved the day she says it's be MONTHS befire I could get it back.
I loved those too. In 7th grade they were all the rage. Girls wore them on mesh scarves that had a knot on each end so if the koala slipped down it wouldn't fall off. My dear grandmother crocheted a few of those scarves for me,Β including a multicolor scarf with purple that I loved, and wore with my little koala, to each bar mitzvah I was invited to
I have three of them. I think the first one was from family when they visited Oz, then got one myself in late 80s when I visited for the first time, and another one on 2nd visit there in the 90s.
Friends, these are available on Amazon. I just thought Iβd let you know, since so many of you had the same reaction I did, which was a super fond core memory unlock.
The BEST!! for some reason ours ended up on a giant floor-living houseplant, for years, guests would ask why and we'd go "what?" because it seemed totally normal to us, like asking why is the plant green, it just... is Like That.
Did they come in different colors and have scents on them? I remember a bear structurally built like this, same clasping arms, but red fur and smelled like cinnamon.
You can still get them!! https://www.amazon.com/Haakong-Pencil-Hungers-Birthday-Supplies/dp/B0CZZZQ8PN/ref=sr_1_2?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.zvrwtToR6T-0PwxqBPPNrlBN1dNXVsbcnQD0j6BIawmuT6_1PWIC0BEANayqbpHv786nCJEQeqeOgzgJnGVsuJx7vUmwpKU4oTobE1mIWZjx1x0dYuBDdteGLxdFRjNy9BDW5kJT_TaWjCG6tiJrRCVSC-vAHPO5AFvVMiSOjDLHF66pIo-l6PN9J0EQbmeqGRofH4aUY9g1zHRmeDU1co_tgmP2PVM4g2VzaJoKPoTm1EJIfSrpM__dIyiZVGa7XGxyV6J-9n_qKSUWCEzOJO1g4q60Hi1s2w5bk2JPE8kI2C2fp6KBMnNZDOIDwkqP.h1GOoiGpf5rvOa9awjwWpHx-OJABDRbJeVv3d6MiE9c&dib_tag=se&keywords=koala+c%3Blip&qid=1739579072&sr=8-2
^(Bleep bleep boop. I am a bot here to serve by providing helpful price history data on products. I am not affiliated with Amazon. Upvote if this was helpful. PM to report issues or to opt-out.)
I just found a long-lost one of these in my home office! I'm guessing the cat carried it around in his mouth and stashed it away. I always wanted one when I was young so when I saw them at Comic-Con a few years ago, I grabbed one. So cute!

I found one in mint condition at a thrift store a few years ago. I smile every time I look at it. I loved the one I had back in 1st or 2nd grade.
Catlore@reddit
I had one that was a cherished possession. My fourth grade teacher took it away because it was briefly on my desk (with other things) while I was getting something out of my desk. She said I could have it back at the end of the school year (it was still first term), but by that time, it wasn't in her contraband box anymore. I still mourn it and wish I'd gotten my parents involved the day she says it's be MONTHS befire I could get it back.
idanrecyla@reddit
I loved those too. In 7th grade they were all the rage. Girls wore them on mesh scarves that had a knot on each end so if the koala slipped down it wouldn't fall off. My dear grandmother crocheted a few of those scarves for me,Β including a multicolor scarf with purple that I loved, and wore with my little koala, to each bar mitzvah I was invited to

The BEST!! for some reason ours ended up on a giant floor-living houseplant, for years, guests would ask why and we'd go "what?" because it seemed totally normal to us, like asking why is the plant green, it just... is Like That.
