Did You Have This Program at Your School?
Posted by King_of_Lunch223@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 295 comments

We spent a whole marking period so lessons alongside this program in middle school.
Yes. That's Ben Affleck.
TurboJorts@reddit
Oddly enough... I never saw it but found a book version of the story. As someone who sailed as a teen, I wanted to get into it but my kids always put up a wall. Maybe we still have it somewhere...
_buffy_summers@reddit
I don't remember this at all, but I constantly ditched school, back then. MTV videos were better than dealing with jackasses bothering me.
Large-Inspection-487@reddit
Watching this and accidentally stapling my finger are the only two things I remember from 5th grade.
Careful-Ant5868@reddit
Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms!
Atlas7-k@reddit
That was a very popular opinion on Movie Poopshoot back in the day.
bjgrem01@reddit
"This show endorses no celebrities (except for Ben Afflec, pre- Reindeer Games.)"
Atlas7-k@reddit
Yep, 5th grade.
Some years later Captain Granville came and spoke to both the Elementary and Middle Schools.
ILikeBumblebees@reddit
Nope. The only ship I ever saw go looking for humpback whales was a Klingon Bird-of-Prey taken over by the crew of the Enterprise.
owlthebeer97@reddit
Yesss in 5th grade. I feel like we made a desalination thing for some reason
AgreeableAardvark78@reddit
YES THE DESALINATION!
CaseyBoogies@reddit
Not growing up anywhere near a coast but understanding the difference between freshwater and salt water our librarian mixed sea-water-salt-water for us to taste and it blew my mind.
AgreeableAardvark78@reddit
Omg! That is so fascinating to me. I grew up near Galveston, Tx. I have so many core memories of swallowing mouths of gulf(of Mexico!) water while getting bashed by a wave! I grew up in Texas but on the coast. My mind can understand not being near a giant body of water! Thanks for sharing!
CaseyBoogies@reddit
XD we'd go to Lake Superior all the time, but it's fresh water! And there was a lake with a beach in walking distance from my house growing up, lots of water but none of it is salty!
CaseyBoogies@reddit
I did it in a pull-away group in the library in 5th grade!
I asked my mom if I was in special Ed and thats what it was (back then I had no idea) and she didn't know either...
Turns out I got to do it during the regular class remedial split >:D. (Like kids that needed more math did an extra bit of math 2x a week, reading, English, etc.)
It was cool af, even though we didn't get to do much besides just watch it... the librarian did mix water to sea-water saltiness, and we got to taste it - and in the middle of Minnesota, that was interesting in itself!
Benzylbodh1@reddit
Yeah I remember that kid drank the sea water when he was really thirsty; I recall it did not go well.
theBlackMermaid@reddit
I still watch this on YouTube at least once a year.
Space_case912@reddit
Yes! We even took a field trip to the actual boat.
TallyGoon8506@reddit
Where was the boat?!
We took a field trip too and went sailing, but I can’t remember if it was related to actually seeing the Mimi.
I remember one girl getting terribly seasick.
AccidentalGK@reddit
I saw the boat at the Charlestown Navy Yard. Didn’t get to sail on it, though.
Space_case912@reddit
I lived on Long Island and the boat was docked somewhere on the north shore at the time, I don't remember the exact location.
MrPlowThatsTheName@reddit
Gloucester, MA
ClimbingUpTheWalls23@reddit
We did too!
Space_case912@reddit
Did you graduate in '97?
ClimbingUpTheWalls23@reddit
I’m assuming you mean from high school, in which case yes
Space_case912@reddit
Yeah the 1979 should have given it away lol.
bustersuessi@reddit
Where was it!
3sclavamente@reddit
luckeeeeey
Life-Finding5331@reddit
You ever take of any sweet jumps?
Mother_Echo4502@reddit
Yep, I tried getting my kids to watch it but they were to bored
BlueGiant601@reddit
Yes, and it was an annual unit. On LaserDisc no less.
amongtheviolets@reddit
Yes! But we did it in 6th grade.
No_Kaleidoscope9901@reddit
6thr grade VHS at my middle school!
murph0969@reddit
5th grade here you dunce. And we had 4th graders in our Gifted Class too.
amongtheviolets@reddit
Ha! I’m in the presence of greatness.
TerribleBiscotti7751@reddit
6th grade for me!
Due_Reality5903@reddit
NuncErgoFacite@reddit
Not if you keep holding it like that
SignoreBanana@reddit
LASERDISCS?!
Man they could never top that name. With Blurays they damn well tried, but laserdisc feels like the future forever.
Kase1@reddit
Laser disc!?!?! SOMEONE went to a rich school district
cuteness_vacation@reddit
6th grade laser disc. This one and Young Sherlock Holmes that year.
xargos32@reddit
My school system never had LaserDisc. We were stuck with VHS. 😭
empty-vassal@reddit
Lazer disc? That seems like a terrible choice for a school. Much more finicky than vhs.
Intelligent_Pass2540@reddit
YES THE GIANT LAZER DISCS and the TV on the cart meant Social Studies was lit. Our class project was actually to build and inflate a life sized whale in the school stadium. It was awesome.
postitpad@reddit
Laser disc? you fancy bitch! I think I watched this on a projector. Lol.
lostmybackupcode@reddit
🤚 seventh grade LaserDiscer reporting in
Neonlikebjork@reddit
Omg yeah
Frumpy-Muppet@reddit
6th grade science class. 1993
descendingagainredux@reddit
Yes, in 6th grade. I can still hear the intro song. I think it's cool that schools across the country were showing it, I thought it was a regional thing because it originally aired on Boston PBS.
gzoont@reddit
My teacher once commented “this song will be stuck in your head forever” before an episode, and I strongly believe that if she hadn’t said anything I would have definitely forgotten it. But here we are, and I can still hear it clearly.
CaseyBoogies@reddit
Minnesota here! And I realize now I'm in Xennials... but I'm definitely a millennial. I watched it in a pull-out group when the other 5th grade classes would split into group reading/English/math remedial classes. I watched it in 1999! (Born in 89)
Seraphtacosnak@reddit
All I remember was the theme song sounded like Gillian’s island. And the scene where a bunch of dudes had to get naked in a sleeping bag together.
lancelinksecretchimp@reddit
Ben Affleck been putting work in!
browns47@reddit
For some reason - we only watched the Second Voyage of the Mimi. It kicked off a brief obsession with the Mayans
puppysmuggler@reddit
Yes!! Thanks for teaching me how to gather fresh water with a tarp!
superRad7@reddit
This!, and the hypothermia one are the only ones I remember
Due_Reality5903@reddit
You mean the one where Ben Affleck got into a sleeping bag in his underwear with the old man?
superRad7@reddit
Was it legit Ben Afleck?
Kase1@reddit
I believe his name was "Ramon"
Zippityzeebop@reddit
You dont remember the suction cup crossbow to tag the whale?
They shoot it at the truck to test it and then the kid gets upset cause he's worried about the whale?
GrizzlyB1980@reddit
I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembers the hypothermia one.
beck33ers@reddit
Yeah that one was special lol
pachewiechomp@reddit
I remember this and something about a deaf girl with a bucket of peanut butter. Or am I conflating things?
OtisPimpBoot@reddit
“Holy chickens Sally Ruth! Is all that peanut butter?”
My friends and I found this line hilarious for some reason and repeated it constantly.
Majestic-Bed6151@reddit
Same here! We still say it!
Zippityzeebop@reddit
Sally Ruth watch out for that wave!
SignoreBanana@reddit
I learned it in this progrim and then in my hunter's safety course they told me and I was like "yeah I know"
elcubiche@reddit
Literally just commented this. Clearly that had an effect on us all!
Quackoverride@reddit
That’s the only thing I remember about the series - gathering water in a tarp.
GrunchWeefer@reddit
You don't remember Ben Affleck stripping down and getting into a sleeping bag with two naked adult men?
BoysenberryFluffy671@reddit
I remember the water gathering one too, but no I think my mind has somehow purged this one. I need to rewatch. Or maybe I don't.
BoysenberryFluffy671@reddit
OMG. I so remember this one.
HratioRastapopulous@reddit
Yess! I came here to say this. I’ve always wanted to try it but thankful I’ve never had to.
jadedlens00@reddit
Same with hanging an American flag upside down as a distress signal.
AgreeableAardvark78@reddit
I feel like that is a core memory for us all!
HratioRastapopulous@reddit
The tv cart getting wheeled out and this huge shiny laserdisc leaving us all transfixed with quiet wonder and amazement.
FungiStudent@reddit
Laserdiscs?!? We definitely had reel to reel projectors and then VHS, but definitely no laser discs.
NoOccasion4759@reddit
Oh fuck i thought id hallucinated that.
DreamsAndSchemes@reddit
Was this what that was from?! It’s popped into my head randomly for years but I could never remember where I saw it
MaeBelleLien@reddit
WAIT
PBRmy@reddit
I was thinking "I've never heard of this Mimi thing" but you reminded me I HAVE seen this.
rels83@reddit
It taught me if someone is freezing to death you should all get naked and get in a sleeping bag together
Accomplished_Let_127@reddit
Literally the only thing I remember from this.
owlthebeer97@reddit
Yessssss
Jswazy@reddit
I watched it on laser disk
Myfourcats1@reddit
I have no idea what this is. Born in ‘78. Virginia.
411592@reddit
6th or 7th grade
what_u_dont_know@reddit
Watched it in 5th grade and loved it. I was stunned when I realized not every kid watched this in elementary school.
zerobomb@reddit
This is what I think of EVERY time Ben Affleck is mentioned.
Markaes4@reddit
Lol at just now learning that was Ben Affleck... But to be fair, while I recall this, I have not seen or even thought of it in over 40 years.
giadia-light-shining@reddit
Dude I loved this show! I want to watch it again. See if it still holds up.
Surfer_Sandman@reddit
Mine was to Philadelphia. I live in Southern California.
elcubiche@reddit
Oh man I still think about making fresh water using evaporation and plastic
tomqvaxy@reddit
YES. Lord it was weird in my memory though.
Shanklin_The_Painter@reddit
Puts the theme song in my head
Lastofthehaters@reddit
I have no clue what this is
Sidhe_shells@reddit
Yes
naileyes@reddit
it's why ben affleck can speak spanish!
Kase1@reddit
His 1st love was a maj named Ramon
auntchalupa@reddit
Not only that, it’s why he has a very regional Mexican accent. Sounds so northern Mexican it blows my mind.
MuppetManiac@reddit
Yep. I also had laser discs.
wiskinator@reddit
Oh I was just trying to figure out what this was
upthereeverywhere@reddit
Yes. In third or fourth grade. But only because I was “gifted”. They had us doing all kinds of weird things in that class come to think of it.
ShelleyMonique@reddit
Hell yeah. 5th grade. Remember the hypothermia episode?
Corn_Beefies@reddit
This one was good and fun. Does anyone remember the absolutely terrible one about the Dewey decimal system.
AKEsquire@reddit
Tomes and Talismans? Like the post-apocalyptic library?
Corn_Beefies@reddit
Holy crap that's it. It took forever to get through and everyone in my class hated it. For some reason I remember the whole thing being about the Dewey decimal system.
AKEsquire@reddit
I looked for it for years! It is soooo weird!!
Corn_Beefies@reddit
We had library once a week, so it would have taken us over 3 months to get through it. No wonder we were so over it by the end.
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit
MielikkisChosen@reddit
Totally forgot about this
pixienightingale@reddit
Not at school, but I loved watching it on PBS
Goawaycookie@reddit
Did I have a weird old couple who undressed me on a boat? Yes.
Gunsmokesue@reddit
I had completely forgotten about that show until this moment. Nostalgia just came and punched me in the face.
austex99@reddit
No, and I really feel like I missed out on something here!
captcraigaroo@reddit
Sally Ruth!
jfb1027@reddit
I think this was a tip of my tongue I looked up and found a few moths ago. 6th grade for me. And have no idea if it had a plot or anything was just glad we didn’t have to remember anything. Wait no I think of it I am getting flashbacks of having movie quizzes fill in the blanks…. Major buzzkill
LegalManufacturer916@reddit
Yup!!
123FakeStreetAnytown@reddit
It was the backbone of the 6th grade science curriculum.
BalrogRuthenburg11@reddit
Yes, watched this in 4th or 5th grade on Laser Disc in the computer lab.
Due_Reality5903@reddit
https://i.redd.it/nr8hx4n238je1.gif
ekg1223@reddit
I just watched it on PBS, no school involved. The theme song still plays in my head sometimes.
ChumleyEX@reddit
They rolled the TV in of Fridays and we got to watch it. I remember when they got stuck on an island and made drinkable water.
ylimeenimsaj@reddit
YES
paradise0057@reddit
Sally Ruth & her peanut butter.
washingtonandmead@reddit
Yep
anythingspossible45@reddit
Oh wow, this brings back some learning lol
dorky2@reddit
The theme song started playing in my head as soon as I saw this image.
Snowboard-Racer@reddit
Is that Ben Aflec?
M3atpuppet@reddit
5th grade. I loved voyage of the mimi days.
Historical-Crab-2905@reddit
This just reminded me of the word “film strip”🤯
Left-Cry2817@reddit
This is a thing I had completely forgotten about. Is that good or bad?
Longjumping-Fact2923@reddit
Of course, how else would we have learned that you can’t drink salt water but you can build a distillery with a tarp?
themodefanatic@reddit
Poor Ben Afflexk
ube1kenobi@reddit
i remember watching this, but i don't remember anything about it. i think i saw it in 5th grade.
Enough_Shoulder_8938@reddit
Yes!!
snoopmt1@reddit
Memory unlocked!
Yitram@reddit
Yes. 7th grade science I think.
Bella4077@reddit
I remember the title but couldn’t tell you what it was about.
I seem to recall watching something about the discovery of King Tut and the search for the northwest passage too at some point.
TragicHedgehog@reddit
I literally had forgotten this existed until now.
A-Town-Killah@reddit
I have no idea what this is. Maybe I blocked it out or slept through it🤷🏻♀️
MiniRems@reddit
Same.
Plane_Jacket_7251@reddit
Oh man! Core memory unlocked. Yeah, that hypothermia scene was... something. God, haven't thought of this film in forever.
sambashare@reddit
I learned that you should write the contents of cans on the tops in permanent marker just in case they get wet and the labels come off
aromeo1919@reddit
Did this have something to do with whales?
PersianCatLover419@reddit
Yes we watched it in 5th grade.
Gator2Romeo0@reddit
watched it in 5th and 6th grade. wanted to gouge my eyes out when affleck just started lapping up the sea water like a complete tool.
ElGranQuesoRojo@reddit
Hell yeah. That theme song is burned into my head.
MartialBob@reddit
We watched this in 5th grade and we met the captain at the Baltimore aquarium.
esk726@reddit
Yep. 5th grade here. VHS in 1994. New York State.
As soon as I saw this post, intro song popped into my head.
Ah sweet sweet memories.
Rolenalong@reddit
oh yeah it was filmed about an hour or two away
ppardee@reddit
Nah, man, I watched that on PBS along with 3-2-1 Contact. Dope AF! Made me want to just go live on a boat searching for whales :)
beck33ers@reddit
Yes! And how to make saltwater into drinking water!
The boat like went on tour or something cause it was in Philadelphia and we went to visit it after we finished the series!
Melancolin@reddit
We did in my 4th grade gifted program. We did the 2nd season on the Maya (Aztecs?) the following year. Ben Affleck started making real movies around the same time. I remember our teacher bringing in a clipping from a magazine all excited because the Voyage of the Mimi kid was all grown up.
pickledpeachesforall@reddit
The bends!
Gnarly_Sarley@reddit
The boy on the right is Ben Affleck
(no, seriously, it is)
elevenmadison@reddit
There would be an episode, alternating with an expedition. Learning was never that fun again
LMurch13@reddit
❤️❤️
Murky-Pass6571@reddit
STOW IT!
Narrow_Grapefruit_23@reddit
Yes and then I was shocked when Ben Affleck showed up in the movie Buffy the vampire slayer. 😂
No_Feedback_6334@reddit
mercury-ballistic@reddit
Yes, I remember. And Ben Affleck is in it!
No_Feedback_6334@reddit
Crans10@reddit
Never heard of this.
FreshlyStarting79@reddit
Loved it! Big old bucket of peanut butter! Deaf kid that can feel it when you hit the deck with a tool!
Sad-Structure2364@reddit
Yep, 2 guys got in naked in a sleeping bag to warm the hypothermic captain
crazycatlady331@reddit
My mom worked for a company that did something for this (I don't remember what). She brought my sister and I onto the set.
5torminNorman@reddit
Isn’t that Ben Afleck as a kid
rocket_____@reddit
Aromatic-Source-2646@reddit
Yess!!
Benzylbodh1@reddit
I remember they had to give us a special talk before the hypothermia episode when they all jumped into the sleeping bag together in their undies. “Now don’t go run home and tell your parents…”
EnslavedByPuppets@reddit
So funny, this was the first memory of this show that my brain pulled up. That and the decompression chamber that they put the basketball inside of and it flattens right before the kid gets in. Mind blown. Funny how the stupid stuff lasts 30 years, but I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night
THC_Gummy_Forager@reddit
Well, it was also the first thing I thought of and yes, everyone in my class laughed also. We we in the “not briefed” category. I’m not seeing the most important detail for those who don’t know which is it was 3 grown men, one of which was elderly so it made it especially funny I believe.
Adventurous_Bar_2337@reddit
Same in 5th grade. We were dying as usual love how this is so many peoples memory. Can anyone else hear the song in their head? It’ll never leave me…
Professional-Fuel625@reddit
This is exactly what popped into my head when I saw the title screen
Ghislainedel@reddit
I really thought knowing how to handle hypothermia would be more useful in my adult life after that episode.
Actualfrankie@reddit
God, I still remember that episode. We got zero warning about it and I remember all of us giggling and being immature about it.
jp112078@reddit
Why was this so ubiquitous in schools? We watched it, but it’s barely educational
Raxian_Theata@reddit
Lets not forget that awesome theme song that would get stuck in everyones had for (checks math) all of time!
https://youtu.be/g5YoQEZqUEk?list=RD8dqKYc578ng
Raxian_Theata@reddit
YES! Loved watching this in school
brmiller1984@reddit
I don't recall watching this one. 🤔
OGDocMalpractice@reddit
Naw, watched it on the public access channel’s instructional programming block that aired Mon-Fri. Ah …cable-less, rural, lower middle class summers of the 90s…
rels83@reddit
Look up what happened to the actual boat!
A homeless guy was living on it and when they tried to kick him out he sunk it!
napandasnack@reddit
Oh my gosh yes. I can still remember the theme song. 😫
ValuedQuayle@reddit
This just touched a deep part of my brain or something. We definitely watched this in 5th grade and had an entire unit of lessons around it. I remember mostly because I found it boring and eternally got detention for falling asleep watching it.
Brandonification@reddit
Yes! Watched the whole series in 6th grade science! I still remember how to distill water using the sun.
Sweet-Idea-7553@reddit
lol same! We had a computer game in conjunction with the videos.
Nuttybunny42@reddit
The only facts I retained were about water distillation and how to prevent hypothermia. I’m sure they will come in handy any day now.
RunawaYEM@reddit
“There’s a storm coming, I feel it in my bones” - me, still, 31 years after watching in 7th grade

Similar_Ad2094@reddit
Yea especially since I went to Mass schools.
bjgrem01@reddit
No, but it sounds interesting from the comments.
We just watched Old Yeller a lot. Our schools were into mass trauma. Like when we watched the Challanger explode over and over for a whole day.
Electric-RedPanda@reddit
I recall this quite well haha
Secret-Treacle-1590@reddit
CT was Ben Affleck!?
obiwanknudson@reddit
the theme song lives rent free in my mind
genesimmonstongue415@reddit
Exactly this. 🎵
obiwanknudson@reddit
Not to mention the season two latin remix
bcentsale@reddit
5th grade. I loved Mimi days!
TangFiend@reddit
SOS MAMA
Both-Tree@reddit
Yes. 6th grade. Same time Matt and Ben won their Oscars for Good Will Hunting and we were all like “this is Ben Affleck?”
Jets237@reddit
The theme still lives rent free in my head
Maximum-Cake-1567@reddit
Yup Fifth grade
boomgoesthevegemite@reddit
I remember watching this in Ms. Starkey’s third grade class in 1997. There’s a scene where someone gets hypothermia and the men have to strip down to their underwear and basically spoon each other for the body heat. My teacher warned the class about it and if anybody dared to laugh they’d go the office and the class wouldn’t be able to watch anymore. Some idiot laughed, he got in trouble but the teacher backed down and we were able to finish the show later on.
Agreeable-Chart-5561@reddit
Fuck yes, hello middle school
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit
Holy shit, memory unlocked. Did anyone else mentally refer to it as “Voyage of the Screaming Mimi,” though?
rabeach@reddit
Yep-5th grade! Mine report was on the beluga whale❤️ I still have it actually
SuchMatter1884@reddit
Yes! Watched it in Mr. Brockway’s class in fifth grade. The theme song plays in my brain to this day
TiesforTurtles@reddit
Was this with a young Ben Affleck?
MyckKabongo@reddit
We watched several, if not most of the episodes but never got to watch the thrilling conclusion. That grinded my gears for a bit in sixth grade.
My lasting mental image was the bucket of peanut butter slop.
rangeghost@reddit
I have four lasting memories of this show.
- The deaf girl can feel vibrations!
- The de-salinator.
- Them serving the kid peanut butter from a bucket, with a ladle.
- And of course, that theme music.
MyckKabongo@reddit
The peanut butter slop was my lasting mental image of the entire thing.
ShenandoahTide@reddit
Yes indeed! Ben Affleck in his element.
Relative_Desk_8718@reddit
This that video set that they teach things while playing out a scenario? If this is what I think it is, it’s where I remember learning about red tide and how to avoid it. Additionally how to find fresh water stranded on a beach, and how to distill seawater for fresh.
If I’m thinking of some other show then I would like to know that show name. I actually think about it anytime I see seawater. Especially if it’s a cooler damn climate.
WidderWillZie@reddit
Got to do it twice, once for SATS and again a year or two later in science class. Still would kill for a dvd set.
rjgore3@reddit
Yes, Sir! I still hate Ben Affleck! Lol

Hypothermia. The distinction is important

Livid_Parsnip6190@reddit
Lol, my older brother warned me about that scene when his class watched it
RachelPalmer79@reddit
I remember watching it on tv. I still have the companion book!!🐋⛵️
darthsokath@reddit
I got to go on the Mimi! We lived near a port and it was there one time.
pineapples_are_evil@reddit
What is the Mimi? Canadian is curious. We spent more time on the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior and a few of the explorers to sail and freeze in Artic and what happened to them... plus obviously les Voyageurs... lol
Bill Nye and Eureka! Plus a few UK or Aussie ones, unless it was French class... then Téléfrançais or other Francophone all could be from anywhere between 1970 to early 1990's if lucky. Graduation from 8th grade in '97
darthsokath@reddit
The Mimi is the name of the boat featured in two kids educational series from the mid-late '80s. The one referenced by OP was the first voyage, with a focus on studying humpback whales. The second voyage featured a story around the ancient Mayan civilization.
Episodes were two parts -- one that progressed the fictional story, another that went deeper in to (kid-centric) science and mathematics.
pineapples_are_evil@reddit
Sounds pretty cool
anOvenofWitches@reddit
We watched the sequel— to this day, I can still read numbers in Mayan glyphs 🙌
onsinsandneedles@reddit
I had that sweater at my school.
Logical_Two5639@reddit
"holy chickens! that's a lot of peanut butter!"
jimerthy-gw@reddit
Yes, in 4th Grade
phlopfrog@reddit
This was when I saw it too but it was only for 4-5 students in our class and we took a bus to another school where 4-5 other kids met us and we watched it there and did the computer thing after. No one else saw it but us. Hearing of entire schools seeing it makes me wonder why only a handful in my grade were allowed. We were the smart/nerdy kids of 4th grade.
jimerthy-gw@reddit
Each school district is different in each State. I went to elementary school in a DC suburb that ranked very highly. I know someone my age in West Virginia who learned how to type in middle school on typewriters. We had computers.
phlopfrog@reddit
We had computers too and we all got used to dying of dysentery around that time.
unionguy1980@reddit
Yes, I watched in it 5th grade.
DETRITUS_TROLL@reddit
The theme song will randomly pop into my head.
We did this in 5th grade and then Second Voyage in 7th grade. We got to make guacamole during that one.
throwitallaway@reddit
Yes. In 3rd ('91) or 4th ('92) grade.
proxminesincomplex@reddit
We did this in 4th grade AG; we read a book called Pixie for HAG. We did II for 5th grade.
We all liked the Mimi; we took masking tape and made life sized whales and the Mimi itself on the stage floor, and made bracelets with some type of line - it wasn’t hemp or paracord. Then field trip to the Inner Harbor to tour the boat and meet the Captain.
crmom22@reddit
I loved this show. Not only watched in class, but whenever it came on pbs.
ClimbingUpTheWalls23@reddit
My fourth & fifth grade teacher (had her two years in a row) was OBSESSED with this. We went on a school trip to see the actual ship and I remember being disappointed.
marutiyog108@reddit
This show taught me how to purify water, so now I feel prepared for societal collapse.
garnett21mn@reddit
Haha yes, it was during the hype of Goodwill Hunting too. I remember thinking, “that’s the Mimi guy!!”
iamdemolisha@reddit
Hell yeah! We even took a trip to California to go whale watching. My favorite memory from Jr. High.
Dakan-Bacon@reddit
Yup and I totally loved it. Learned so much!

FfejMos@reddit
Haha, total false memory, I could have sworn it was young Matt Damon.

Wow. I was thinking about that show recently, but I forgot the name. I didn't even know why my science teacher was showing it to us or what curriculum. I never got into it. The into song was my only favorite part.
FractalClock@reddit
If only Ben Affleck had drowned during its production. We would have been so much better off.
Coomstress@reddit
OMG, yes! We watched this in 6th grade science class.
t00_much_caffeine@reddit
Omg yea! 7th grade earth science class lol
Alarming-Mongoose-91@reddit
Yup. Only laser disc movie I’ve ever seen.
Munchkin531@reddit
Omg yes I forgot about this show. We watched it in 6th grade. I can't remember how it ended.
D2Dragons@reddit
I watched it after school on PBS!
XxFezzgigxX@reddit
Hell yeah. I know how to make drinking water from seawater. I haven’t need it in the last 30+ years, but I have that nugget of knowledge ready to go.
dagenhamerica@reddit
“CT, it’s a humpback!”
pomegranate_rose@reddit
Was there a deaf woman on this? She could feel the knocks on wood or something?
JazzPolice50@reddit
Yessss! 6th grade science class! It was right before Ben Affleck blew up in Goodwill Hunting.
NursemedicBigNasty@reddit
YEP!
ExcellentTeam7721@reddit
I still try to remember the episode where they demonstrated how to survive if stranded without viable drinking water. They did a desalination demo but damn if I can recall the process
Sadop2010@reddit
Thats the first thing I think of when this show comes up. And then I think "I should have paid attention to that."
MathematicianBest678@reddit
I think I watched it on pbs
AngryGingermancer@reddit
Same. My school didn't show it, but I distinctly remember seeing some episodes of it in the afternoons when I got home and turned on PBS.
omelatk@reddit
Both of them, one and two! Still remember them distilling salt water 😂
hypercapniagirl1@reddit
We did it in 5th grade at Elementary school. Being an ocean-front community, it didn't seem odd to us.
elgarraz@reddit
Yep. I remember being annoyed by CT on the first one and okay with him for the second.
BonerDeploymentDude@reddit
It's on youtube
Groundingstone@reddit
In 6th…everyone secretly loved it.
Frosty_Cloud_2888@reddit
I remember a deaf student knew Morse code and helped save the day.
mercyful_fade@reddit
Loved it so much. Especially that incan pan flute intro music right?
I was bummed to learn the family didn't actually live on the boat in real life or something.
catjuggler@reddit
Yes! I remember them collecting rain water to drink
SinisterDetection@reddit
Yup
Mindless_Jicama8728@reddit
Yes! I still think of the deaf dude from time to time and how fascinating it was to see him use vibrations. This is also where I learned how cuddling helps fight against hypothermia
The_BSharps@reddit
You think my 7th grade science teacher wasn’t going to just press play on this banger so she could take a break?
KarisPurr@reddit
Holy fucking shit this unlocked a very, very buried memory
exitlevelposition@reddit
No-Lobster677@reddit
6th grade science class, in the middle 90’s! Young Ben Affleck 🎉
Much_Lingonberry_747@reddit
Yes!
blellowbabka@reddit
This one and the sequel. Then they took us on a trip to Mystic Connecticut.
BeefSupremesDildo@reddit
On Laser Disc, no less.
JacPhlash@reddit
I can still hum the theme song!
"Sally-Ruth! Watch that boom!"
Opening-Reaction-511@reddit
Oh WOW forgot about this.
MossGobbo@reddit
Yes! Fifth Grade.
Moonskaraos@reddit
We watched this when in was in 4th or 5th grade. I can still hear the intro music in my head, lol.
plagiarismtoday@reddit
I definitely remember watching this in elementary school. I have a younger brother who is deaf, and this was probably the first time I saw a deaf character on a TV program.
GorganzolaVsKong@reddit
Yep - was in a terrible GarageBand called Sally Ruth Again
allywrecks@reddit
I think they somehow ended up showing us the entire series twice on two separate years lol
Main_Ad_6147@reddit
Ours were on laser discs which I think is the only time I ever saw them used in real life
