Absolutely nothing. I work to enjoy life and my family. When I'm home, I home.
You make plenty of money - no need to waste your free time. If you REALLY need it, pick up another trip.
Solid-Permission-770@reddit
Yea I’m confused why so many pilots are keen on the “use this job to fund your business” and it’s like I’m All for that if that’s your calling, but why do so many pilots not just fly, collect their check and spend time with family or friends or do hobby?
F1shermanIvan@reddit
Damn right. I use my days off to travel with the GF. Off to Japan on passes next week.
subarupilot@reddit
We just got back from Iceland and it was amazing.

I wanna meet you. You always have the perfect lines and advice and you don’t drone on.
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
And this is the key. Make sure your lifestyle isn’t dependent on a side hustle or extra work. There should be plenty of white space both in time and finances.
Odd_Item5286@reddit

TappedBuckle@reddit
I do logbook conversations to make people’s paper logbooks into electronic ones!
Wooden-Term-5067@reddit
How did you get into that?
TappedBuckle@reddit
I started doing it for some friends and figured it was a good way to spend my overnights in the airport Hampton Inn lol

I'm currently a private pilot who co-owns a tattoo shop. I'm working towards my instrument and commercial ratings to drastically alter the hours spent flying to hours spent pretending that teenager will never regret having their future ex's name on their body.

Day/ swing trading. Drop trips when it’s going well
T0mm1801@reddit
How did you get into this. And what do you look for?
Several_Leader_7140@reddit
Uh… I still fly for the guy that gave me my first job lol. Also racing but I lose just as much as I earn there
nerferderr@reddit
I've flown with, brewery owners, storage facility owners, garbage bin rolloff company owners, landscape/snow removal company owners, realtors etc and it all sounds like too much work for me and whatever amount of free time I have.
Give me a green slip over that any day..
Frequent-Skill4927@reddit
Rental Properties in Multi Family. Now I don’t even need my work income anymore since the rentals now doubles my work income.
Wandrews123@reddit
Could I get started with $50k and no job?
Frequent-Skill4927@reddit
You need a job that’s going to help you have the required debt to income ratio. For example if you buy a multi family property with 4 units. Let’s say each unit brings in 2000 a month and total it’s 8000 a month. 75% of that total rent counts towards your income. Now let say you have a job that’s pays 4K a month. That means you have 10,000 income per month. Let’s say you’re looking to qualify to buy a multi family property that cost 600k. With a 7% mortgage rate, and 30k down, your monthly payment would be 4400 including everything except maintenance cost for things that might break or other such items. Usually the bank will let someone with a strong credit score above 750+ to borrow up to an amount that would not exceed 50% debt to income ratio. So your income is 10,000. Your debt monthly payment is 4400. Your debt to income is 4400/10000. You would qualify for that loan to buy that multi family property. Now your cash flow is maximum of 8000-4400, which is 3600/month. That’s 43,200 a year of cash flow(maintenance cost whatever may come up). 43,200/600,000 is 7.2% cap rate which is pretty good return on your investment. Also your money into the property is 30k +closing costs of about 10k. So 43,200/40,000 is a return on equity of about well over 100%. That’s such a great return on investment. Now I used numbers to tell a good story that’s easy to understand. I hope it helps.
Wandrews123@reddit
Thank you. Yeah at first I was comparing the % return to the market/dividends and said no thanks. But recently I realized what you said about how it’s a return on the whole thing, which is way more relative to the cash I had to put in than the market. So on that note I need a job again.
Frequent-Skill4927@reddit
Yes real estate if you are patient and wait for the right property will be killer returns! I look very hard everywhere everyday and I only see killer deals once every 6months. The point is you need to be patient. Also my primary strategy is to look for large properties where there is an opportunity to split it into logical units to make it a multi family property. Those have killer returns too. I also look for properties with separate garage structures and I covert the garage into a 1 or 2 bedroom unit. Then add a fence to make separate yard space.
GoHomePig@reddit
Yup.
Wandrews123@reddit
But I want to lever up. Who would give me a loan without steady income? Without that I could make similar returns just clicking buttons on my phone.
apoplectickitty@reddit
I film myself reading back clearances for TikTok.

Positive-Tour-4461@reddit
I know a few that run crashpads. You couldn’t pay me enough money to deal with that. But it’s a great way to build wealth in the long run
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
This is most rental… real estate.
People call it “passive income” while spending more time dealing with delinquencies and repairs and occupancy etc than they do with their regular jobs.
Loose_Badger_3631@reddit
I think the only people who call it passive are people who don't own rentals. It's a good way to diversify but "passive" is buying mutual funds- not being a landlord.
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
Oh no…. three guys I work with call them passive incomes and it’s all they ever talk about, worry about, and do on their days off.
Loose_Badger_3631@reddit
Sounds passive af!
Asheejeekar@reddit
Crash pads?
No_Needleworker_8103@reddit
The best side hustle in this industry is live in base and fly a little extra. Nothing else comes close to that pay:effort ratio.
gromm93@reddit
That's the thing with any side gig. It's usually better to just work overtime than it is to have a separate job/hustle that you also make money at.
And if aviation isn't your dream job... How did you even have the dedication to make it into a real job in the first place?
DarthStrakh@reddit
some of us are crippled with the disease of finding everything interesting. I got like 8 careers I'd be happy with and a few that I would but they don't pay. I'll prolly always being doing SOMETHING on the side. Rn I'm trying to make flying my side hustle lol, I make a lot as a programmer and I'd rather be a teacher.
gromm93@reddit
Oh damn. Yeah, I can feel that pretty hard too. I can't really see myself doing the same thing for years and years, and I've tried.

Not an airline pilot. When I’m not flying the jet I’m paid a salary to fly I pick up contract flights for anywhere between $1500-$2,000 a day. If I get lucky I fly to a beach sit for 3 days fly back and make $10,000 for 5 days work other type ratings pay even more it just depends on what you’re flying.
I’ve tried other side Hustles but nothing compares to making that money daily that effortlessly.
Asheejeekar@reddit
Holy smokes. What a dream. What’s your career path been if you don’t mind me asking?
CaptainWaders@reddit
I’ll pm you to not blow up this thread for everyone
blackbeardair@reddit
how do I get into something like this?

Well to start I need to know what your experience level is. How many hours do you have? How much turbine time? Do you have any type ratings?

The key is to bid reserve and never fly, and also to be the only one who can do what you do at your other job so they don't know how little time it actually takes to do stuff
AJohnnyTruant@reddit
I did backend dev on long call reserve for a while. Many evenings on the road sitting in my boxers in those shitty hotel office chairs with broken back rests
ndem763@reddit
Same here dude, but I moved in base and just bid reserve so I can sit in my office when I need to work. I fly just enough to still enjoy doing it while having my low-key second job that gives me the latitude to pursue my own hobbies/interests most days.
AJohnnyTruant@reddit
Yeah that’s the way to do it. I actually stopped doing it when we got slow and over staffed here. I’ve been flying less than 150 block/yr. So I’ve been training and racing bikes instead lol. Income/effort ratio is off the charts. Couldn’t bring myself to be productive with it at home

Bidding check airman trips and double-dipping. Made 120 hours in January for 21 hours of block.
There’s not a side hustle in the world where I could do that. Maybe pimping, but that’s too much work.
derdubb@reddit
How has nobody said Onlyfans yet?
I know that’s not just for the FAs.

Ok_Battle121@reddit
A guy I know is a Legacy Captain that does DPE on the side
Buttcheekeater@reddit
Does he also overcharge his financially struggling students meanwhile he's making half a mil a year?
Ok_Battle121@reddit
He's the cheapest in the area tbh. I did all my ratings with him for $700 each (except CFI, I had to use another DPE for that rating) You be the judge, I don't know too much about DPE rates.
Valid__Salad@reddit
Southeast US?
DeerPrior1644@reddit
My CFI Initial was 1800 lol
Ok_Battle121@reddit
Holy crap, and I thought $1000 for CFI and CFII was a rip off!
DeerPrior1644@reddit
There are some around here who I know paid 2k plus for the ride alone. Retakes add a few hundo per task area if you fail. Needless to say I wanted to be prepared. Keep in mind this isnt Florida or California, this is the Midwest
Ok_Battle121@reddit
Dude! I'm in the Midwest aswell, which area are you at? Those prices are fking insane.
DeerPrior1644@reddit
Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin area. You can PM me for some specifics if you’d like.
Buttcheekeater@reddit
Friends CFI initial was 2500 lol. Ur guy sounds valid tho.
Ok_Battle121@reddit
2500? I'm coughing hard! Holy shid, I thought $1000 was hard enough. Fking oath bro! I swear I thought $700 was a bit steep for most of my ratings. CFI was understandable cuz it's long. But Jezus!
Mammoth_Impress_3108@reddit
I wonder what percentage of DPE's are. I know of at least two that are, and I don't know all that many DPE's.
Ok_Battle121@reddit
I remember someone was telling me, there's about 900 DPEs in the US. But only 300 of them are available to take checkrides. The part 61 flight school I went with knows a DPE that works well with out schedule, and he's apparently the most affordable in the area. But I don't know too much about checkride fees. But it sounds like a lucrative business to be in.

I always wanted to get into that. I wrapped my seat cowling on my motorcycle and said fuck that. Although I do want to wrap some of the trim on my car. How long have you been doing that for?
RevolutionaryOwl6925@reddit
A few years. I did my Audi on my own and ever since then either friends or referrals have just continued to ask me to wrap their cars/motorcycles. It is a calm hobby where the finished product is rewarding enough. The money is pretty good as well though.
