WWYD with a pilot that vapes in cockpit?
Posted by minfremi@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 219 comments
Vaping is prohibited at our company.
I just flew with a pilot who knowingly vapes whilst on duty in the flight deck. I told the pilot once to stop doing it in my presence (I hate vapes and the like), but still does so anyways in and out of flight, though said pilot tries to hide it in the cockpit. I’m sure this pilot openly vapes during flight with other pilots.
WWYD in this situation? I am off duty now so I am not currently with the pilot.
Fat_dumb_happy@reddit
Good lord I thought pilots like you were supposed to be in part 121. Get over yourself
rotardy@reddit
Are you the captain?
mckade912@reddit
I used to smoke cigarettes and I vape now. I treat vaping the same way I did cigarettes. Only vape in designated smoking areas. I would never vape in the flight deck. My addiction is my problem not everyone else’s.
the_silent_one1984@reddit
Just for my curiosity, how does one "hide" vaping in the cockpit? It seems impossible to hide.
Rican_Chocolate@reddit
Since you never got a real answer,
In the CRJ cockpit there was a vent right next to the pilot seat on your side. You technically could hunch down like you’re pretending to look for something in your pilot bag stuffed between the seat and the side console and exhale into that vent and no vapor would be visible. Saw a guy do it once. Realized I saw him and didn’t do it again. Easy to hide the cloud of vapor but impossible to hide the scent.
DarthStrakh@reddit
You can hide it anywhere. When I vaped everywhere. The little disposable ones yoy just hold it in and they produce zero vapor and some of them are decently quiet. Just tape that sucker to the inside of your sleeve.
In the cockpit hiding it from the other person wouldn't be possible lol. I just used zens during my cross country with my instructor.
whooo_meee@reddit
Wrong I do it everytime it’s easy to hide. Look for traffic to the right quick rip and hold it in. Most pilots don’t stare eachother down the whole time and just get mint smells like gum.
MontgomeryEagle@reddit
The ones that look like USB drives seem to make no vapor at all.

mustang__1@reddit
my pot head friends used to exhale in to a toilet paper tube stuffed with toilet paper. Still set the smoke detector off in the hotel though ¯_(ツ)_/¯
TSells31@reddit
It’s supposed to be stuffed with dryer sheets lmao. It won’t fool a smoke detector but it does do a lot for the smell.

Throwback to college days at a very small, environmental liberal arts institution in a state that wasn’t all that concerned about exactly why their mountains were green, twenty or so years before legalization was even a serious conversation anywhere.
The single convenience store and the single grocery store in town could never manage to keep dryer sheets in stock…
CptSandbag73@reddit
Just tell your bros their farts smell like cum, they’ll realize… something.

General_James@reddit
hide it in ur hand/sleeve then blow it into ur shirt. I've also seen my mates just hold their breath or something and when they blow out, there is no visible cloud.
Source: My mates vape like a steam train

If you know where the outflow valve is, it just becomes a real cloud.

Organic_Mechanic@reddit
It's relative to how much vapor it's giving off. If the mf is using some vape mod that needs 3 18650 batteries, that thing is going to be a veritable fog generator. If they're using something that's small and runs low wattage, you'd probably have to be intentionally looking for what's he's breathing out to notice it. (It would also dissipate in a fraction of a second in that scenario, rather than linger around.) There's a wide range of possibilities.
Bernard-beejeezJinky@reddit
Stereotypically you’re thinking box mod huge cloud vape. Most vapes now produce little vapor and are the size of your finger. It’s totally possible to inhale every bit of the vapor and cusp your hand around the vape. Source: used to vape in uni I’ll shamefully admit

Out of curiosity are you at a Part 135 airline flying the E135/145?? if so i’ve flown with that captain before, and I had to tell him to chill out just in case the smoke went through the door, it didn’t bother me, but at the same time I don’t wanna get in trouble for his bullshit
minfremi@reddit (OP)
I once ripped open a banana in flight and got a call literally 1 second after I did so from the flight attendant and the question was “are you eating a banana?”
So if a banana can, I’m sure vapes can too.
hendrixsrv@reddit
Oxygen mask on and initiate an emergency descent and land at the nearest suitable airport. They’ll be too busy to vape AND you get to go home early. Win win.
whooo_meee@reddit
Don’t underestimate the ability to rip a vape in any situation
dash_trash@reddit
Professional standards, especially since you already told him directly. It's a function of your union so they have no authority to punish him, just tell him that his behavior qualifies him as an asshole and that he should consider following the rules.
That shit is gross and inconsiderate.
minfremi@reddit (OP)
No union
EdBasqueMaster@reddit
Split the difference and ask a check airman you trust hypothetically (no names) what they’d do and who they’d talk to.
JSX has (at least had) pro stans. I’d be surprised if Contour doesn’t. If you’re at Aero… idk.
minfremi@reddit (OP)
I was gonna ask my CP about reminding the group about smoking/vaping, but I guess I could go to a check airman first.
whooo_meee@reddit
I’d love to spend a 4 day with you
prex10@reddit
That won't change anything. They'll still do it
Ok-Letterhead4110@reddit
That’s why he should just mind his business. Does this airline only have 2 captains and you have to be one of their FOs at all time? I don’t understand why you can’t avoid him. I work for legacy airline so maybe we have that flexibility because we’re larger. But my goodness. I don’t think you have to be his FO
EdBasqueMaster@reddit
Don’t do that.
Also I just saw that you’re a captain? That changes the dynamic here. I assumed you were an FO and there was difficulty navigating the power dynamic.
You’re literally in charge. If you have to put your foot down do it. Tell them to get you a new FO and you can absolutely tell them why at that point. This is your job. Don’t beat around the bush.
Guysmiley777@reddit
JSX also had captains sending dick pics taken in the cockpit (giggity) while in cruise.
zero_xmas_valentine@reddit
Who is taking a dick pic with another guy sitting there
Guysmiley777@reddit
It certainly makes one wonder. It was so bad, he even managed to get the FMS in the shot showing the date/time and flight #.
He deleted his entire account when people pointed out how much extra info besides his pecker girth he was revealing.
CptSandbag73@reddit
Wait was it ending up on OF then?? 💀
Guysmiley777@reddit
He posted something in /r/flying like "hey where do DFW pilots go for short term hookups?" and the very previous post by him was in some degenerate subreddit with his meat shot and enough details from the cockpit to possibly dox him.
CptSandbag73@reddit
Ah, what a degen. DFW… so an American Airlines guy. Classic.

LuawATCS@reddit
The FAA doesn't hate only pilots, they hate everyone!
InsaneInTheDrain@reddit
It's called the cockpit for a reason, no?
planeEnjoyer12@reddit
doesnt matter. Smoking or vaping is prohibited at all time. Your responsability is to report it to your chief pilot. I once had a captain that started vaping in flight. The answer is no and if you allow it, you are just as guilty as the other guy
_BaldChewbacca_@reddit
I'm not union either and if someone I flew with was dumb enough to do that, I would give one warning with the benefit of the doubt that they were unaware. After that I'd let the chief pilot know and management can deal with it.
Murl_the_squirrel@reddit
This dude wants to get someone fired for vaping.. remind me to never fly with him as my pilot!
Fishoutofbeer1@reddit
One day you’ll understand. For one, he’s actually attempting to find solutions that don’t get the guy fired. And two, it’s about the principle. What else is this guy doing that doesn’t follow procedure?
ASELtoATP@reddit
You sound like someone who intentionally violates company policy. And you’d deserve to be fired.
ce402@reddit
I told an FO if I saw the vape again, he’d be off my flight and he could explain to the chief why we cancelled.
There is zero room for intentional procedural noncompliance in this business.
There is a time to handle it man to man, and there is a time to toss the trash to the curb.
dash_trash@reddit
Ah I see. In that case I suppose it depends how much it bothers you. I don't think any of us want to get a fellow pilot in trouble - all of us in this career have a lot to lose, the stakes are high, and given the economic/medical/etc uncertainty we all cope with it can feel like none of us are guaranteed a satisfying future as it is, and we all make mistakes.
But this isn't a mistake at this point and you've already done the hard part of telling him directly to stop. Maybe you think he deserves a second, more direct confrontation in which you say you don't want to talk to a chief pilot but you will if he doesn't stop?
If it bothers you, it's almost certainly bothering other people too who are in your same shoes. FWIW.
Striking_Quarter_747@reddit
I don't do anything. I've had many FOs do it and honestly it doesn't bother me. It's odorless anyways. Seems like it's younger guys that do it more.
waguzo@reddit
It’s only odorless if you can’t smell. To the rest of us, it’s completely obvious. Even after they put it away.
Striking_Quarter_747@reddit
Maybe the flavor is what you are smelling. But a true vape without flavor should be just nicotine. So that means it's just vapor you're breathing, there's no small there. I don't use the crap but considering people used to smoke cigars on the flight deck it's not that big a deal.
brucebrowde@reddit
"I used to shit giant shit in your living room, but now I reduced it to 100x smaller shit. It's not that big of a deal."
DarthStrakh@reddit
One smells really good the other smells really bad lol.
It's like I used to take a shit in your living room but now I spray cinnamon cookie air freshener instead.
Horrible metaphor usage.
RegionalJet@reddit
Dude, vape does not smell really good.
DarthStrakh@reddit
They are quite literally designed to but okay
RegionalJet@reddit
Yeah, I know they're designed to, but they still smell heavily of chemicals with a bit of flavor mixed in. Is everyone else in this thread who has a problem with it too just making it up? Most people who don't vape do not like the smell.
DarthStrakh@reddit
No one else has really mentioned the smell they are just pussy aching over rules.
Not objectively true at all tbh. Vaping is such a social norm now because most non smokers are okay with being around it. My anecdotal experience when I vaped is I mostly got compliments on how good it smelled. My grandma even once asked me to take a rip because she couldn't find her air freshener lol.
Only a few times in my life ever had anyone tell me no vaping and they were all because their car windows instant fogged from it. It only happened to certain cars probably depends on how the windows were coated/treated.
GorillaNipSlip@reddit
OP told the guy he doesn’t like it. The courteous thing to do would be to stop doing it. The dude isn’t listening. That’s asshole behaviour.
And LOTS of people don’t like the smell. I personally don’t.
Even-Impress-6038@reddit
I would hate to fly with most of you
GorillaNipSlip@reddit
If your bum ass continues to vape in a cockpit when your colleague respectfully asks you to stop, then you are the asshole. Just childish behaviour.
It’s just common courtesy.

Tough_Efficiency_719@reddit
I just had this exact thing happen. 121. A day after a passenger set off the lav smoke alarm. I caught the FO when he turned away from me but I saw it. I said "What the hell was that you just stuck in your mouth?"
"What? I thought you knew I was vaping?" Like I was cool with it. I let him know I was not cool with it. That it was against the rules. And that he knew it was against the rules Then he offered to stop if I didn't like it. Like he was doing me a favor. Because no one else had a problem with it except the most hated captain in our base. And now me. And it's too bad Because he really enjoyed flying with me but now he can't anymore. Suddenly I was the bad guy for calling him out and enforcing the rules?
He stopped when I told him to, so it ended there. But my opinion of him dropped to zero. There's no reason to do it in flight. There are always smoking areas on the ramp. Find one during your walk around. Be an adult for frak's sake. If you can't there's no reason to waste time with pro standards. These people need to go.
And so many here are saying this is common? First time I've seen it in 22 years of airline flying. And if so many don't have a problem with it then you all suck.

Oh 1000%
In Canada we can find the Swedish death pillows, highest Zyns I can get in the US are like 6mg / pouch, the Swedish ones I can get on the reserves are like 35mg / pouch. Not good, but I’m not smoking in the cockpit or on an aircraft. Am I ruining my gums? Absolutely. Can I stop? Absolutely not.

The last time I remember being a passenger on a flight where smoking was allowed was in the early 90’s (going to Guadalajara, Mexico) but according to Google, domestic smoking in the U.S. was prohibited in 1990 and internationally in 2000. When I was a crew member where the Captain was smoking away was between 1997 and 2001.

ce402@reddit
Yeah, I missed that part when replying to the previous comment.
One of the joys of flying 91/135. No union and little oversight for rogue captains. I could write a book of all the stuff I learned not to do from a few Learjet cowboys back in the day.
Ok-Letterhead4110@reddit
That’s what I’m saying. Why is he “forced” to fly with this captain who vapes. I’m not getting that part
NuttPunch@reddit
You are Captain so you know that it is. Regardless even as an FO it's a problem if your Captain does it. Willful non-compliance. Not very cute and "not that big of a deal" when dude takes a rough hit, lets a little cough and now the FAA JS who came up the side before any of the pax is there to offer his help.
amolybdenum@reddit
If you can't muster a "Bro could you not do that", you are not a person of action and probably shouldn't be a captain. Confidence is key as PIC. If you are part of a smaller 135, anonymous reporting is a fallacy and outing yourself as a rat will lead to a very hostile work environment. If you want to complain, do it directly as it will garner much more respect. Act like the guy you want to look like; direct, succinct, professional. Be cool, fly good, make shit happen. Good luck!

AHappySnowman@reddit
I thought you were pretty reasonable for directly addressing it with him. I can come up with safety reasons why he shouldn’t be doing that. Consider that nicotine is a psychoactive drug that he’s putting in the air, and you may negatively effect your performance. I don’t know what it is like to have a nicotine addition, but they do make gums and patches he could use to deal with the withdrawal symptoms he’d be feeling and would need subsided during the flight.
At least the USA you’re also under osha protections as an employee, which means you should be able to clean air while at work. So you’re leadership should correct the issue.
NuttPunch@reddit
I can actually provide you medical studies that specifically tested nicotine use in pilots and found that the ones using nicotine had higher awareness and reaction. Nicotine is a powerful drug for when you want to focus on a specific task.

nineyourefine@reddit
PIC qualified as in typed, or PIC qualified as in you are a Captain at the company, but you do Captain/Captain pairings so in this case you were FO/SIC?
Either way, be a Captain and tell him what's up.
If it's a small company and you only fly with a handful of guys I can understand trying to keep it discreet for your own sake, but you can be upfront and "cool" at the same time.
"Hey man, I don't care if you're smoking/vaping when we're not in the air, but you can't be doing that while we're underway." If he ignores you and is an ass about it, then you take it one step further to "Hey, I'm serious man, you can't be doing that while we're flying, I've already asked you once, I don't want to have to get pro standards involved." If he continues being a dick, you then escalate to pro stands/chief pilot/union or whoever you have on property that handles pilot issues.

Are you US-based? I thought any kind of smoking was illegal on US-registered aircraft.

Report it to the local FAA office and let them decide. Not your problem.
appreciatedeeznuts@reddit
Not a pilot but a mechanic i see this all the time with pilots there's just as many that use zyns or snus I can see that being a bit more professional
IJNShiroyuki@reddit
If you like that guy tell him to stop. If you doesn’t, call chief pilot…

Less about the actual vaping and more about: - Dangerous attitude - Lack of respect for colleagues - Lack of professionalism
Once you tell someone your position, it’s on them to decide how to proceed. If you’ve said no, you’d have to be a dumb mf or related to the chief to keep vaping.
Most folks break a few rules together, but once someone calls you out, it’s time to step it back.
foot2000@reddit
I'm not a pilot and don't know the rules or the culture but if he's caught by someone else or something happens, and it's discovered that you were aware prior, would you be culpable (if that's the right word) for NOT reporting the incidents?

Pro Stans if you have one. If not, and you’ve told him to knock it off then I’d tell him that he’s going to hear from a Chief next.
legitSTINKYPINKY@reddit
I’ve had it happen. It doesn’t bother me. If he wants to risk it I guess he can. I’m not going to tell on him. Unless he’s doing it front of PAX or it becomes a safety hazard.

I get distracting headaches from vape smoke or nicotine, have ever since I quit smoking. If I were you I’d tell my boss that if it happens in flight it’ll be a serious problem.

I mean that’s not only against policy but it’s also illegal sooooo.
havand@reddit
Does the FOM/pilot manual have any rules associated. If so politely remind said douche that it’s against policy to vape/smoke in the aircraft.
If that doesn’t have the desired affect go to the next level being the CPO
Ted_Striker02@reddit
Yeah I don’t care.
Spirited_Act2565@reddit
Idk, mention that the other pilot is being rude. It’s like you’re trying to contort yourself to try to not say the obvious thing. “Hey guy, quit that shit, you know you can’t be doing that here., I’d hate to see you lose your job over something so foolish..” Everything is being recorded. All the time.

Educate them on the harmful chemicals in electronic vapes. Also remind them it’s disrespectful to do in front of others.
Every reasonable person knows it’s not gonna blow up the plane and is safe in the realm of fire hazards, but it’s unprofessional and unhealthy. Save it for the overnight, or go outside the crew lounge if you really have to.
jackpotairline@reddit
This is definitely a pro standards call. Be ready to share your name
phalanxo@reddit
I would call pro stans. They likely will tell you to go to management on that one.

Honestly, nothing, doesn’t bother me much.
A call to Pro Stans is fair though. You asked, he didn’t listen.

This is a copy of the original post body for posterity:
Vaping is prohibited at our company.
I just flew with a pilot who knowingly vapes whilst on duty in the flight deck. I told the pilot once to stop doing it in my presence (I hate vapes and the like), but still does so anyways in and out of flight, though said pilot tries to hide it in the cockpit. I’m sure this pilot openly vapes during flight with other pilots.
WWYD in this situation? I am off duty now so I am not currently with the pilot.
