Long time listener, first time caller. I started skateboarding in 1987 and stayed w it but now my body doesn’t want to anymore.

Anyone else that did “extreme” sports have other hobbies after your body stopped working like it used to? I don’t want to golf just yet and live in Midwest so can’t surf, regularly.
RVAblues@reddit
Motorcycling burns a fair amount of calories, believe it or not. Off-road even more. Plus, it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
Though, if you’re in the Midwest, maybe not so much. Not too many twisty mountain roads out your way.

Martial Arts - knees and other joints just said fuck this. I miss it, but really don't miss getting beat up anymore.

I had to give up karate a few years ago, and it left me raging because I had no other physical outlet for managing stress, other than walking. I forced myself to try as many different activities as possible, and finally settled into a new groove of rucking, swimming, and strength training. I still love walking, but with ear buds instead of the Sony Walkman.

Hi Caller!!!
gimme3strokes@reddit
Gave up my crotch rockets and powerlifting, but kept my off-road death machines(atv, atc, motorcycle). My replacement hobbies have been bodybuilding, firearms, and cars.

Lord I gave up skating in the early 00s when I fell down the back steps with my socks on
But I've continued doing yoga and now do ashtanga poses when I couldn't in my 20s
EXTREME YOGA

I’m seriously re considering ever skiing again. Is it worth the potential permanently effed up knee hip brain?
The resorts are making this an easier sacrifice by making the whole experience miserably expensive so there’s that.

Never been happier than when I kick a hacky sack around with my son. If that is not extreme enough for you then you aren't as old as you think you are.
Sk8-BRDR@reddit (OP)
I had my only child (son) at 42 and he is almost 6. We just got our first Hackey sack. Love your answer 🫡

It's time for either a road or mountain bike lol
It's much easier on the body
UpstairsCommittee894@reddit
dirtbike. peddling is for the kids.
Kirby_The_Dog@reddit
Wouldn't recommend starting at his age. You will spill, and at this age, our bodies never heal the same again.

I'm 50 and we ride my bikes hard 2x a week. Wife and I, with a group of friends that are 45-65. Plenty of injuries in the group, but well worth it.
Gave up the road bikes, I don't trust people in their phones. I can heal from a mtn bike accident. Car hits me and I'm fucked.
UpstairsCommittee894@reddit
Valid point. I sometimes forget not everyone grew up out in the country where you had field cars, go carts, dirt bikes, 3 wheeler, 4 wheelers, snowmobile at your disposal. Side by sides while a little more pricey are super fun though. They even have a roll cage and seat belts
Opening-Ad-2769@reddit
I need the cardio. That's why I have the bike.
But I did like 3 wheelers when I was young. I only got to ride them on hunting trips though. I would love to have a snowmobile but it doesn't snow where I live. I did try it CO a few years back. It was fun.
The_Sleestak@reddit
I do both. Mtn biking makes for better trail riders.
Used-Cod4164@reddit
Believe it or not, we play very competitive spike ball on the beach and at the park. Broken ribs twice doing that shit recent. And pretty competitive pickleball.
Started hunting a lot too, West Coast hunting, lots of miles of hiking and elevation gains. That shit isn't easy.
The_Sleestak@reddit
I still snowboard and mtn bike. I also developed a motorcycle habit…dual sports are fun
Angst500@reddit
Not necessarily extreme but I played Rugby and Hockey for most of my life. A few broken bones on top of having a kid took that off the table. I play golf now and I am dabbling in powerlifting. Unclear which one casuse me more injuries these days.
Totally_Scott@reddit
I'm 52, still skating. Not doing anything crazy but I wear a helmet and have fun on the tamer parks in my city. It's good exercise.
CrankyDoo@reddit
Sort of. I ran a lot in high school. Ran some more in the Army. Ran intermittently through the years since then. Took up running again 4 years ago. I can still run, thank God. But I have nowhere near the stamina, strength, and endurance I once had. I’m capable of improving, but it’s literally a constant struggle. If I take even a week off, it will set me back a minimum of six weeks. If I eat more than a little bit of junk food, I won’t improve and may even backslide if I eat too much. I’m more or less at a point of stasis now where I improve a little bit then lose it. I feel great physically, but I have reconciled myself with the fact that I have more or less peaked out and as the years go by my ability to run will steadily erode. The only saving grace is that my joints are still in great shape. I run about 25 miles a week and have no issues with knees, ankles, or back.
Sk8-BRDR@reddit (OP)
I was really into this girl who is a great runner. I couldn’t do it at all with the way my feet, ankles, and knees are. Sounds like we are in a similar boat.

Tony Hawk is 56 and selling turmeric (or some shit) on TV….
Sk8-BRDR@reddit (OP)
I’ve skated w him a few times. He is in the same boat. He says he will never do a 540 again and that is tough to hear.
Kirby_The_Dog@reddit
I've come to the realization I've probably already ridden the biggest wave of my life. Tough to accept.
willynillywitty@reddit
30 years bud. No an electric moto that does 60. So fun.

I live near Marquette, who says you can't surf in the midwest? https://www.mlive.com/news/g66l-2019/02/f76bd515f47815/tridentwielding-surfers-ride-lake-superior-waves-during-polar-vortex.html
