My remote-work team is doing collections of birthday money every couple of weeks. How do we stop?

I used to work alongside laggers (Thermal insulation engineers: TIE) and they used to do collections for random Ties that'd died. So they're a tightly knitted bunch, they mostly all know each other as they've all gone from shutdown to shutdown at some point. They're also in some kind of unofficial scheme where if one of them dies, the others will run a collection on every single petrochemical plant in the country. It was £20 for Ties and £10 for labourers. I was neither of those, but I worked alongside them, shared a cabin and what not. I was "expected" to pay £20 as I earned similar to the Ties, and a few quid an hour more than a labourer. You don't mind the odd one, I guess, but the problem is this: Old laggers drop like flies, remember how asbestos used to be normal and safe? Well the old laggers used to put it on the pipes and boilers, etc, so easily every fucking week there was a collection, and no shit, sometimes twice in the same week 🙁 The worst place was Pembroke, the old Texaco plant. They used to stand in front of the gates, shaking fucking buckets for folk that'd died, folk that were off sick, folk that wrre on strike 500 miles away, you name it. It was almost sort of intimidating, like they were right in front of the gates, almost not letting you on to the site if you didn't dig deep 😂 I did a few times, then I took a stand and just said "no", I'll do it if I've met the fella, not some random dude you could've made up. "old Billy Smith, I worked with him on Drax 40 years ago, just died from asbestosis". Some of them called me out on it, because on one occasion I'd chipped in like 3 or 4 consecutive times. Honestly, just nip this shit in the bud, it's pressure, it's not your choice and it's daft as fuck. If you wanna get a colleague a gift as you are close, go for it. But the expectation you do a whip round is absurd.
