My father had LASIK done in his forties. No longer needed prescription glasses for nearsightedness but had to get readers for his daily paper.

Yep, hard to get around the readers. But I’m fine with that. I got mine done in my late 20’s and it’s been nice not having go deal with contacts and glasses.

Also for a small, small number of people (including me), LASIK was never an option. They said my corneas were too flat. There was a huge risk of having halos for the rest of my life.

Adding to this, while I got LASIK and am happy every day that I wake up able to see, it doesn’t prevent your vision from changing. You can become more or less nearsighted after LASIK, and you can develop astigmatism even if your distance vision doesn’t change. And it will neither prevent nor cure [presbyopia](https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/what-is-presbyopia), which is what causes us to need reading glasses as we age.

Welcome. Got 'em a few months ago; it took three weeks or so before my vision stopped swimming depending on where my eyeballs looked. But it's real nice to not hafta take my glasses off to see anything closer than a foot or two away.

I noticed this with reading or looking at my phone. I'm wearing my old rectangular frames at the moment and can luckily look past my glasses by moving my eyes downward, like I'm doing now as I type this response.

Ugh, yes, that. My wife prefers I get semi-rimless frames because she likes my cheekbones or something -- but not having a frame on the bottom of the lens makes looking past it so much easier too.

These old glasses I have on happen to be semi-rimless and yeah it helps a lot with that. Luckily my near vision for reading isn't compromised.

With the progressive lenses that I’ve been getting for the last few years there’s actually a little bit of magnification built into the lower third of the lens so if you need a little boost you can look through the bottom part of the lens and be able to read damn near anything. I was a little salty about it when I’ve got the prescription for the first time but I really like these lenses now a few years in

I'm sticking with single vision, personally. If I need magnification, I have an app on my phone that makes use of the camera for magnifying much faster than the native camera app. Plus I can get the phone to places I can't necessarily get my head.

I’ve had mine for about a year and I hate them. I have to watch tv in bed with my glasses on the end of my nose. Too many things are in the mid ground and are blurry. I usually read on my kindle and my phone. I’m trying to read a new release book from the library (ebook is on hold for months) and it’s hard because it’s right in the mid ground unless I hold it closer which is hard because it’s heavy. I also have to have the overhead light on to see it. I also don’t like the frames I picked out! 🤦‍♀️

I knew I had crossed a threshold when switching between sunglasses and glasses gave me thought—those Transitions make a lot of sense. I also noticed a bird and got a little bit of a rush because I knew the species. I know how this ends, and honestly—I’m not thrilled.

I’ve had glasses since 5th grade, and every year my prescription (farsighted) has edged up a bit every year until this last exam, when it dropped down a quarter point in both eyes (I was -3.5r and -4L). I quipped to the 20-something ophthalmologist that I’m finally getting better, and she deadpans, after looking at my chart, “yeah, no, it’s because you’re 46 and your eyes are now softening and getting round again, so you’re going to need readers.” 😩 I PAID for that!

I got my eyes checked last Friday. Optometrist pointed out that my distance is now different than my near. But not different enough for progressive yet, maybe in 5-10 years.
