I live in MK and don’t have a car yet. I use Uber or bolt. Generally wait less than 10 minutes.

How much does a 10-15 min ride cost?

TheMopFromMars@reddit

Hi, something like that would be £7-£10 I reckon

Is SKYLINE or UBER cheaper in MK?

Skyline. Used them two weekends ago to go to the football. £7.00 seemed reasonable and turned up on time

Skyline. They have an app. It's shit. Their cars these days are also, often, shit. Filthy. And the drivers don't know a thing about where they're going. But that's the way it is. You can also use Uber, which is often better when they have cars nearby, but that's not always, and it's also more expensive.

The amount of drivers who don't know where the city centre or estates are is crazy. "Can you drop me off at the big Tesco Extra in Bletchley?" "What's the postcode?" As his hand hovers over the Waze app. Why the fuck would I know the postcode to a Tesco? The only qualification to being a Skyline driver is owning a car nowadays.

Papaya-Extract@reddit

Yup. And it doesn’t have to be a car that’s fit for private hire, either. Any car will do.

Your best option will largely depend on where you are getting picked up from and where you are going. Always get a price when booking over the phone as some drivers like to take the piss although apps will give you a range in which case best assume you will pay the top end of the range. Uber is pointless in MK. There are so few cars they tend to surge price quite often which makes them more expensive than black cabs. I only use them when work is paying and every ride the driver has tried to sell me a reason to give a tip. Numerous minicab firms. Skyline/Speedline (same company for the past few years) have by far the biggest fleet so in theory should mean they come to you quicker. As with any firm some drivers are dicks, have no idea where they are going even with satnav, and don't keep the car clean, but the majority are sound. Bolt seems busier around Bletchley and surrounding areas. Royal are good but they have a small fleet so quickly get booked up. Helen's are great for single female travellers but again are small and based in Olney so get booked up quickly and can take a while to come to you. There are other smaller firms for both standard and executive travel so you could search for them. I know many drivers (mainly Skyline) who work for multiple companies to get some extra work so the quality of the ride won't change and they tend to be freshies who work 15hr days to send the money home and know nothing about the area or culture they are in. That being said some of them are very interesting to talk to. MKConnect is a minicab/bus crossover, however, you won't have any consistent timeframe before they pick you up if a car is available as you have no idea how many other passengers they are picking up on the way and you won't have a clear timeframe to reach your destination as you will have no idea how many other passengers are being dropped off first. They don't follow a set timetable or route.

How long has it been since you used an Uber because I rarely have to wait over 4 mins?

Mid Jan. The time isn't really the issue as they aren't much quicker or slower than other firms on most days, it's the price. Like I said, I only use them when someone else is paying so I don't use them that much. Every trip has been comparable to a Hackney cab or worse. For example, I have never paid less than £20 to go from NP to the central train station which for MK is moronic. I don't see the point in paying so much when another service can be much less that is doing exactly the thing. I don't see any advantage so I feel like I'm throwing money away. As long as my seat is clean, the driver hasn't been smoking in the car, and they follow my directions if I think they are going the wrong way then I'm okay. I just want to get from A-B quickly. My preference would be MKConnect as it is free for me, but if one as to be at the destination at a specific time that service is unworkable. I have to use cabs so much instead of buses or MKConnect because they consistently save me so much time which is ridiculous, but I hate the fact I have to spend so much.

Uber is fantastic (unless you’re in very villagey areas might take a few more mins there)

I use skyline quite frequently, it can be frustrating when cabs suddenly cancel on you (even when pre-booked) but honestly never had a problem with any of the cabbies, it's handy to be able to book on the app & use it for payment too.

Ah best walking then. My wife missed an important exam because they never turned up once

Yea same, I missed many trains because of them at different times of the day. I genuinely convinced myself they were only sending me drivers on their probation period because none of then knew where the fudge they were going. But yea these days a walk and a mcdonalds towards the end is a much better option for me.

I got into a taxi a couple of years ago and the guy had full blast bhangra with mental loud gun shots every 30 seconds. It was bizarre

Bolt is pretty good. Very similar to Uber.
