Is Quebec really more racist than France?

Hello there.
Yesterday i was talking to a Quebecoise person over Discord and my wish to move to Quebec.
After i mentioned i am not exactly white (a bit on the darker side, not far from white), he mentioned about racism and that France would be better.
But all data i look says otherwise, he says it's under reported in Quebec. But such difference... Is that really the case?
lassouplisseur@reddit
Sorry, I'm a bit late to the conversation; I just found this post.
I might be biased as I'm a Québécois myself, but I feel like Quebec is generally WAY LESS racist than France.
I've never heard more racist statements than when I traveled to Nice and Marseille; things like "all Arabs are criminals" and "I hate this place, it's full of Arabs." Also, the most racist people I know are French.
I'm not saying there's no racism in Quebec. There is, like in most places in the world, but statistics show that it's one of the least racist provinces in Canada.
HOWEVER, it is true that Québécois don't like to speak English. Many will expect you to speak good French. This is for historical reasons: after all, we've been colonized by the British Empire, and that still leaves traces of domination to this day.
So, long story short, I don't think Quebec is more racist than France, but it might be stricter when it comes to language.
PS: Very sorry if you were a victim of racism in Quebec. I apologize on behalf of the rest of us.

Sans doute

Tu es biaise par devant ou par derrière ???
liltruval@reddit
Quebecois are insanely bigoted, racist, and generally unpleasant. The French are no better. Apple does not fall far from the tree
Cellulosaurus@reddit
Here is a good example of someone projecting their own bigotry, racism and unpleasantness onto an entire people. What else can we expect from imperialist anglo canadians ?
kitesurfr@reddit
The French, in general, are bigots. Source: I come from a huge French family. It doesn't matter if you're in Quebec, France, or a dom-tom.
MeanButterscotch2531@reddit
Les Français "Bigots" ? Renseigne-toi ! 60 pour cent des Français se déclarent athées !!!
OkJournalist5095@reddit
I believe that racism does not exist in Quebec. Once you master French and can imitate it, it's like camouflage; there's no longer a problem.

I'm born in province of Quebec and I'm second generation from immigrant family in the 80"
Personal life-> My family came from South-east asia and I'm born here In Canada (Province of Quebec) My personal experience in western Quebec is kind of Mid, I wouldnt say you will be persecuted daily, But you will encounter a lot of retard when you will settle.
Primary School was Okay : kids see you differently, but you adapt except a olderman told me at 9 years old that my parent came to stole our jobs traumatise you.
Secondary : Hell let loose : People saying chinese, Go back to China, Small asian, All the anti-asian slurs. I'm not even a chinese I'm Lao.
In 2016 I did my mining course and it is one of the painful and mentally draining part of my life. People really treat you like shit, Like fag saying they will rape you blahblah china. It was a 6 month course It feel like a eternity.
Nowadays at my Job people will crack asian joke, which is one sided because I'm not laughing. They still treat their countrymen diffrently not as equal. I will never get use to it, But make me more resilient. Went to church once and a guy saying racist words against black peoples really? That how you gonna treat your brother and sister in christ?
My personal experience. Does it mean you will live the shithole that my life have, But you have to take it with a grain of salt and carry on with your day.
ecopapacharlie@reddit
There's no way to say that one is worse than the other. Only personal experiences, which can vary a lot. I've been living in Quebec for about 3.5 years and yeah, as an immigrant, I feel that this is a very racist society.
WhompBeta64@reddit
personal experiences are not fact
Reasonable_Low2191@reddit
Mine too. How about we just do a basic study on how many times i get called racial slurs versus France in my stay in each?
Fit_Gene7910@reddit
As a Quebecers, the biggest factor that will determine wether people will like you or not, is if you try to speak French... Not so much your skin color or ethnicity. And by try, I don't mean being perfect. If we see that you are trying to learn our very fragile language, it will warm our hearts.
You must understand the historical context: Our language has been on life support since we got colonized by the English empire. Quebec is basically a very small French island in a sea of English (in terms of population).
Of course, like everywhere, there are people that won't like you because of ethnicity... But I don't think it's better or worse than in France.
canadianbrains@reddit
I do not agree with you.

Hello OP, oh yes absolutely, I’m an Asian studied and worked in France for 10 years and came to Quebec, oh boy these people, especially north of Montreal, are not your average European villagers… they are vicious and hate foreigners. The stories I have been through are quite surprising to be honest, and I’m a respectful chill dude.. my colleagues have been openly expressed their hatred towards foreigners and the self pity for their white folks, which I understand but it’s just too much. Montreal is much better but other than that just avoid them, the world is a big and exciting place, nothing worth this misery, me personally I will leave for sure.
canadianbrains@reddit
As a English quebecer I can confirm this. They are absolutely racist towards foreign people and if you speak English watch out.
lmlavie@reddit
IM really sorry for your experience. As a french québécoise, not from Montreal, I think maybe North of Montreal is not the best part to dress a accurate portrait of Québec?
Mario__1984@reddit
davijones43@reddit
Do unemployed people in Quebec get benefits from government?
Loose_Schedule_8612@reddit
I'm a colored man living in Montreal, I can tell you one thing, it's not where you are but who you encounter, older people in Quebec across the bord tend to be very racist, rude and entitled, montreal is very diverse but you will find douchebags here too. Planning to move soon.
Charming_Mail_6352@reddit
Hey, I’m a bit late, but personally, not really. I mean, I’m a Black person living deep in the countryside surrounded by rednecks. If you speak French with not too strong of an accent, they’ll treat you alright, but otherwise they tend to get more verbally aggressive. But honestly, even though there is racism, I feel like they’re not physically violent about it… at least compared to the U.S
SexyDan37@reddit
i have been living in Quebec city, and they never integrated me (i m Tan), in Montreal, this is multicultural, we are all equals
TreacleAffectionate1@reddit
I don't even know what racism is these days.
sketch-3ngineer@reddit
if you're white you're fortunate and will never really find out, that's because racism.
SuccessfulText2798@reddit
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Own-Statistician929@reddit
I’ve lived in many Canadian provinces and it’s true les québécois are very racist. There are also ‘no go zones’ for people who aren’t white. Montreal is a bit better though. Avoid Quebec City, trois rivière and other rural areas. There is something really strange about québécois, they tend to be hateful.
rlstrader@reddit
Where are these "no go zones?"
sketch-3ngineer@reddit
Get a prosthetic skin color thing, practice a foreign accent in english and drive around.
sketch-3ngineer@reddit
It's funny how non POC have such a rose tinted idea of racism. It's the little things, that add up to make one be able to say for certain one area far more racist than another. Sorry to ruin your romantic notions of french Egalite.
pamlock@reddit
I live in the countryside in Québec (province) a as latina and I've never felt any discrimination or racism in the 4 years I've been here. Maybe it helps that I've learnt french?
AnyLobster7539@reddit
I have not lived in France, but Quebec 99.9 percent of the people are absolutely racist. I dont like them at all. And since France is all french they would be 100 %…
Mario__1984@reddit
LengthinessOdd9370@reddit
I’m an Asian that studied and worked in France for 9 years then now in Quebec for 2. I feel like French in France are much much warmer and friendlier. maybe I’m just unlucky but man the québécois are an absolute miserable bunch, they are unhappy, passive aggressive and have a strong tribe mentality to a point that it’s laughable. Young people in Montreal are more normal tho.
Hopeful_Safety_6848@reddit
neither one is racist.. I fact both country's white guilt and DEI nonsense has caused them to destroy themseves
GTFOHY@reddit
What part of DEI are you against - the diversity, equality or the inclusion?
Hopeful_Safety_6848@reddit
the whole thing is racist. We should hire people based on their merits. The moniker is fake. I undermines actual diversity of thought, It is racist and divisive, and it does to include people but excluded them based on their skin color. It is racist, hypocritical and intellectually dishonest. Also, most things are not made better by "racial diversity".
aghastrabbit2@reddit
It undermines diversity of thought if everyone in your company is the same. Even if we rolled a dice to choose from resumes with the same/similar qualifications, we wouldn't have as many white people in the boardroom... or leading the country... or... There's bias inherent in all of us and DEI initiatives try to level the playing field a little bit, and they're not even that successful in doing so! White people are not excluded by DEI, because it's about more than just race. I'd love to know where the vilification and half truths about DEI started but I guess it doesn't even matter because it's now just a dogwhistle.
GTFOHY@reddit
Hiring is a tiny part of DEI
gurlwhosoldtheworld@reddit
Both are racist. They also both hate non-native french speakers.. They hear an ounce of an accent and they start rolling their eyes.
shopgirl56@reddit
unfriendly & smelly as fuck, lol
socialmediajunk127@reddit
Speaking as a half-French half-Canadian person currently living in Quebec and who has lived 12 years in France, I’d say that France is way more racist
EspressoOverdose@reddit
From my experience, the French are racist until they realize you aren’t from an African country. But it is in your face, even more so than in North America. In Montreal, I never had an issue.
GTFOHY@reddit
This has been my exact experience, especially in Canada. Treat me with indifference when they think I’m African, when they realize I’m not (can’t speak a word of French) they are all smiles and cordial and just nice. It’s weird but c’est la vie, I suppose
t6_macci@reddit
I can’t speak for anyone else. But my French sucks and all quebecois people speak to me in French all smiling. Been to small towns and everything and is always the same. People know I’m not from here yet speak French to me and are nice. I just think is whether you speak French or not and are cordial to say hello and that’s it
plumbobsim@reddit
Im a Quebecor (of Italian descent) living in France now. I’d say Québécois aren’t racist if you’re properly integrated in their province (adopt the culture, respect and adopt their values etc). France is the same, though they seem to be more like closet racists…But these are just vague generalizations. I don’t think any is more racist than the other, they just handle their racism differently.
Aryallie_18@reddit
I live in France for 9 years and Quebec for a couple years. It heavily depends where you go. In France, rural areas can be very racist and xenophobic (I’m white but in my village my family was avoided because we were the “Americans”, despite my mom being the only full American. but that was nothing compared to what the only black family had to deal with…). Cities are typically better. As for Quebec, I’ve heard horror stories from friends while I was there. Montreal, like others have said, is very multicultural and overall more welcoming, but Quebec City is not great.
Consistent_Dingo3913@reddit
I'd say yes, the french is nicer than quebecois
Previous_Repair8754@reddit
Definitely not. I wonder if that person has ever been to France.
