Car Shipping Experiences – What Should I Watch Out For?
Posted by Commercial-Bite-1943@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 10 comments
Hey everyone, I’m researching car shipping and want to understand the common challenges people face. I’ve heard about delays, unexpected costs, and poor communication.
• What was the biggest issue you faced when shipping a car?
• How did you go about choosing a carrier, and was it the right choice?
• If you had to do it again, what would you do differently?
Looking for insights from real experiences so I can make an informed decision. Appreciate any advice!

My sister-in-law had a lousy experience shipping her car from California to Texas, when her car was being delivered, the truck driver was charging her more than the rate she got from her agent and didn't unloaded until she paid. The cops were called, but they weren't any help. I was worried about going through the same thing sending my older car to my daughter in Florida and found www.smartautomove.com they were actually pretty great. No upcharge, and they picked up and delivered the car as promised without incident

I would also caution against uship. They just auction it off to the lowest bidder and don't tell you anything. They don't tell the bidder anything either. I was very clear to uship that the car did not drive and stop. That means it has to be loaded with a forklift. They did not pass that necessary information to the carrier. The carrier then lost my title and decided not to stop at the agreed upon location. They took the car another 2 hours east past my house to their yard and unloaded it there.

I will share my cut rate shipping experience. I uaed Uship to get quotes on a dump bed I bought. The first day there were what I call "fuck you bids". $8000 to ship from Ohio to TN. After about a week I got a bid that was acceptable. $1800. It was a nightmare to coordinate getting the bed picked up since the shipper couldn't give me a solid DAY let alone a time. Got picked up in the morning and it took 2 days to get to me in TN. The only way I knew it was here is because I saw the guy driving through my yard. The guy delivering had a short bed 2wd Nissan Titan (gas engine) with a 25 foot gooseneck. He got stuck in my yard. After I unloaded him I had to pull him out with a backhoe. Driver and "codriver" both looked like they were doing this to support their meth habit.

Made the mistake of uship. Shipper supposedly had a heart attack.... uship kept their percentage saying I canceled. Next shipper made it half way, car sat in a lot for a month. Brake line got torn out and she lost the keys. Went under the car to put it in N when it was time to unload and it ended up in my bushes.

Wow, that sounds like a nightmare. Do you think there’s any way to avoid these issues, or is it just luck of the draw with car shippers?

Get a legit shipper from an actual shipping company. They (uship) accept anyone with a license that pays a percentage. Like rock auto or amazon of shipping.

Stick with the top carriers
Reliable Passport Auto Transport Horseless Carriage
Then there won’t be problems.

Call Reliable and be done with it.

I’ve heard of Reliable before....what was your experience with them? Were they worth the cost?

For me it was well worth the cost. They delivered my '16 Z06 from the dealer on the east coast to Michigan. It arrived in perfect condition with all of the new car plastic interior covering in place. They are insured, have liftgate service, and white glove treatment. Very professional and I would use them again without a problem at all.
