New York Governor Hochul orders closing of all Live Poultry markets. Owners of live bird markets in NYC, Westchester and Long Island have to complete cleaning and disinfection and remain closed for five days.

I’m just gonna throw this out there for those that don’t know; a good chunk of these live poultry markets are Muslim owned, and shutting them down means people aren’t able to get their halal meat. Especially right before the Eid that’s all about meat? This feels targeted
Sad-Syllabub-3109@reddit
News flash: it’s the Muslim owned FARMS and then by defaults, live markets that have the virus. If you’re in this world- you know this. So your statement couldn’t be farther from the truth.
These people are money hungry and don’t give a shit about the wellbeing of animals or people. Instead of taking a break and losing some money to terminate the problem- they keep pushing and pushing and selling, so the problem just keeps going. This is like a pandemic. It’s not like… It is. You have to contain the virus and eliminated. You can’t just keep going on and expect it to magically go away

TIL there are live poultry markets in New York

Chinatown, babeee! They’re in Chinatown!
Chestpub3s@reddit
The shops they show are in Spanish though.
Baader-Meinhof@reddit
All over Brooklyn and Queens too. There's one in Ridgewood that even sells live goats.
Smooth_Influence_488@reddit
I saw one out in north Brooklyn last week, closed already, I was surprised it was there but appreciated that at least it was VERY well marked.

The city is only good for breeding diseases. Physical and metal. The people are just sub par
big_loogie@reddit
You can buy chickens anywhere in Newark Paterson NJ anywhere in the city pretty much

I used to go into the basements of some of these places monthly and it was some of the most unbelievably disgusting conditions.
Ok-Thanks-5445@reddit
Why you in the basement?
Peatore@reddit
To access the illegal gambling ring in the back.
biggie_schnozz@reddit
checking for missing children lol....used to read meters
ranchwriter@reddit
Im guessing some kind of servicei g of equipment, or a cleaning contract, maybe an inspector but I doubt that would be monthly.

I wish humans didn't treat animals like this . 😪
ContestNo2060@reddit
Live markets practices are the worst idea - stress the animals out impacting their immune system while intermingling with other animals/humans.
Hailsabrina@reddit
It's so cruel 😢

Why 5 days?
--2021--@reddit
NYCMFERS (NYC Metro Flu Emergency Response Squad) has discovered a planned bird flu attack in the next 5 days. The birds will be evacuated during that time. After that they should be safe.
adversecurrent@reddit
For the cameras. Come Monday, your average media consumer will have forgotten and moved on.
MsCalendarsPlayaArt@reddit
When you say, "for the cameras" do you mean, that's basically just an arbitrary guideline given to help the public feel like their are guardrails?
adversecurrent@reddit
That’s my humble opinion, yes. A 5 day pause cannot stop the freight train that’s already hurdling out of control.
Around-town@reddit
I read the 5 days as allowing enough time to complete the cleaning properly. If they just allowed the markets to reopen as soon as the cleaning is complete then the owners are incentivized to clean as fast as possible. 5 days gives a day to move the birds out, 3 days to clean, and a day to move the birds back in, which seems reasonable to me.
MsCalendarsPlayaArt@reddit
That's smart and very logical! Hopefully, that's the reasoning behind the 5-day guidance
YayVacation@reddit
Right. Is there science showing the virus only stays alive on surfaces for 5 days? I really don’t know. Maybe there is.
MsCalendarsPlayaArt@reddit
It kind of feels like they're just going by the unscientific "5 day isolation" guide that the CDC updated covid precautions to (a few years back) (despite the science having already proven that 5 days was not enough to prevent the spread).
I can't think of where else they would be getting the 5-days from
BKMagicWut@reddit
They are in NYC. There is one a couple blocks from me. Stinks really bad.
Inevitable-Toe745@reddit
10 days after they reopen something will fly in from Kansas and you get to do the whole thing over again.
