I'd think it *should* be tied back , purely because long hair on a man can look a bit "untidy, rebellious teenager", even if it's well kept.

As a long haired male, I’d tend to say yes to give a good first impression, but if your son feels more comfortable with it being untied but tidy, I wouldn’t foresee it being an issue, dependant on the job and where it is

What sort of office though? Some industries are more relaxed than others. Accountants and lawyers are still wandering around in suits and ties while the IT crowd are in shorts and T shirts. Basic principle of interviews is it is better to go too smart rather than too casual - what does he feel looks smarter?

Need to? No. But as someone with long hair, I'd advise to do it. Don't do anything to risk giving a negative perception as some people will think unkempt, unhygienic etc. Even if well kept when down, there is always someone who might have a negative stereotype of the look, especially if dealing with the public.

It really depends a lot on the interviewer. Long hair on men is generally fine these days, but some people will want it to be tied back, others will prefer for men to have short hair and biases like that absolutely play a part in the hiring process whether they are meant to or not.

Need is a bit strong, but if it's long-long (beyond shoulders) it probably wouldn't hurt. Key guideline is to aim to look neat, rather than dictate style - straight, loose, clean hair is unlikely to be a cause for a 'black ball' alone but rocking in looking like he's been head-banging might raise some eyebrows..

I'd suggest looking at the following: Linkedin Company websites Industry websites If he can gauge what people in the companies or industries do as a rule of thumb he can take the hint from there.

I’ve done over 100 interviews for office based roles and I would say no. As long as it’s neat and tidy, that’s fine. If he wants to tie it back then go for it but it’s not a necessity.
