What is the etiquette for forming a new queue?

Not so hypothetical situation: there's a single till open at Lidl with 5+ people queuing. A new till opens - is the original queue privileged to take first spots in the new queue or is it simply a new queue and "you snooze you lose"?
My view is that it's a new queue and I'm not going to internally debate if people in the original one want to me move or not. You see a new till open, you go or you don't.
