What is the etiquette for forming a new queue?

Not so hypothetical situation: there's a single till open at Lidl with 5+ people queuing. A new till opens - is the original queue privileged to take first spots in the new queue or is it simply a new queue and "you snooze you lose"? My view is that it's a new queue and I'm not going to internally debate if people in the original one want to me move or not. You see a new till open, you go or you don't.

I give about three seconds to people in front of me to seize the day. If they're not quick enough then yeah, you snooze you lose. But I'm normally only buying up to 15 items at a time and I don't faff about with change or the Lidl app.

Race to be first in the new queue whilst maintaining an appearance of casual nonchalance. Don't be so fast you start a fight or so slow you end up at the back.

It calls for tactical lurking when you see there's going to be a new checkout opening but don't know which one. As soon as it's announced my partner legs it there and I follow with the trolley.

If their shopping is on the belt, tough. If they are at the point where they would have to back up - either beside the belt or because a display at the end of the till is in the way, tough, they’re committed the that lane in my view. If they are behind the belt and free to move left or right in the aisle to another till, I’ll let them go, they have fully committed yet.

I move towards it, but if someone in the original queue ALSO moves, I let them go before me, because they were already queuing. Unless it's someone with a screaming child; I want to be away from that ASAP.

Obviously, if the members of the existing queue are blocked by the other tills or display or brollies etc, you are in your god given right to occupy the new till. You are British, if you don't politely inform the person who is in front of you of their rights, the we will revoke your tea privileges. Don't be a yank.
