Sorry, Branston's aren't British either. They're made by the Princes' Group, which have been owned by multiple foreign companies since 1973 (including Nestle). The Japanese owned them until last year, now the Italians do.

When I was a lad I'm sure all you could get was Heinz beans. It wasn't until maybe the baked beans wars of the early 90s when supermarkets started selling their own brands. Branston beans weren't invented until 2025.

They're the ultimate safe bet and de facto standard. Branston aren't as nice IMO. Saw a blind taste online for branston Vs heinz Vs bookers and Branston came 3rd, to the surprise of.those judging. I can't recall which won.

Never bought Heinz anything in my life. As for how I make beans on toast; In the beans add chili oil, cut up sausages, diced onion and garlic, lil squirt of ketchup. I make cheese on toast then add the beans on top and add a lil bit more grated cheese on top of the beans.

I was about to write the same thing! Wait until they realize how many other products are from the US. I remember having a conversation like this in uni with an American and several European students. Everyone was convinced that their favorite products were from their country. Nearly all were American.

Err, yeah. I think that’s common knowledge. But Heinz is still a US company and that is where the surprise stems from. US tinned beans are simply not the same in the UK types. They are typically considerably sweeter and only served as a side for Bbq foods.

Right balance of sugar and salt in them, and they taste just like Heinz tomato soup which I imagine people have fond memories of. I’ve tried others but I don’t think the balance of the savoury taste is right.

They're the originals, all the others are copies. Better copies, quite arguably, but Heinz invented them in the first place via a succession of tweaks to American pork and beans for export, IIRC during the postwar period while rationing was still in place).

America shipped us a lot of food during WWI so that's when Heinz became very popular. I didn't even know Branston made beans. I just buy off brand beans.

4 slices of Braces XXL bread with lashings of butter, pour 1 can of Branston beans all over (do not heat because cold baked beans are the best..it’s true because science or something),grate a load of cheddar cheese over the top and put under grill till cheese go melty, then consume like you haven’t eaten in a week…lovely jubbly.

I noticed a few years ago supermarket own brand beams taste exactly the same. Try it. I don't skimp on quality but some things are genuinely just a brand marketing premium.
