The Fanciest Powershell Setup

Hi All, I am about to reinstall my OS for the first time in years. I have so many PowerShell modules that have been installed at various times over the years - all kinds of issues with version conflicts, SPO powershell that works 50% of the time 100% of the time and all the rest of the issues you can imagine. It got me to thinking, what is the gold standard nowadays, how do you setup your PowerShell environment. 5.1? or 7? What modules do you install to get to a minimum standard. I would do a fair amount of Admin on Microsoft 365, so need all the modules, AZ, Graph, ExchangeOnline, etc - but as mentioned above, they tend to break often. I am genuinely curious as to how others go about getting the perfect PowerShell setup in place. Well ? How do you do yours?

Powershell 7 for most things. Some things still require Windows Powershell 5.1 to with correctly. I've recently started managing my powershell modules with Uniget UI (along with my Winget packages) it has made it astronomically easier to keep them up to date and keep track of what is installed, so I really like it. The most recent version of ExchangeOnlinemanagement had some issues so such with the previous version for now.

I recommend Powershell Universal, has lots of nice features like scheduling, gui building and git syncing etc.

We manage all modules via cicd https://github.com/ztrhgf/Powershell_CICD_repository so every admin has same modules managed centrally. Modules are updates only if necessary (new required feature or to fix a bug). Because solving all these assembly conflicts between az and graph modules is insane. And yes mainly 7.x psh but for some specific use cases 5.1 is used.

Thanks to legacy code I am having to bounce between them. It is pretty ridiculous trying to keep the module store clean especially with the bloated graph modules, forever-beta modules, PnP/SPO, EOM, etc. The only real answer is duct tape and bourbon.

Reinstall for for.years. According to the naysayers it should be every 6 months. PowerShell. I try to only run 7 current, which I am sure is 7.5. On prem, run the bits you need. For 365, download all the official Graph ones and if.you need to update your scripts, there are plenty of guides

>According to the naysayers it should be every 6 months. 6 months seems a bit excessive... I do mine about once a year, probably going to be 18 or so months now that I have a pretty good lab going and a workstations that I can boot from a snapshot that is pretty clean.
