First day on my shiny new CPAP. What do you have that you never thought you would at this age?

Nothing yet. I've had a CPAP for about fifteen years but I didn't use it. I never could get used to it. I'm fighting off bifocals. Eye doctor said get some. I'm resisting. I guess the closest thing is I may put in one of those high toilets. I'm fine right now. I'm fine throughout the day. But for that first 30 minutes or hour in the morning I have the toughest time actually being able to sit on my toilet. Which it's exacerbated by the fact that it's an old toilet in an old house. It's a little lower than what I'd call a standard toilet. My last place actually had a high toilet. Which feels kind of funny at first. But it's easier on the knees.

spyrogyria@reddit

Don't fight the bifocals! They make no-line bifocals so you can't even tell someone is wearing them. And once you get used to where to look, you will not have to take off one pair for another or wear glasses on the end of your nose. What a relief! Also, they make a toilet seat riser you can find at many places (Walmart, durable medical goods) that will solve that problem!

I’m amazed that I’ve survived this long. I nearly died a few times when I was a teenager. And the only medical conditions I have now at age 50, I had when I was 13 (severe scoliosis that required 7 of my vertebrae to be fused). I wasn’t expecting every bone I’ve broken in my life (for the record, it’s seven) to ache this much.

It's the soft tissue injuries for me that ache forever. My sympathies.

All thanks to one of my jackass cousins from Arizona. One of them (still don’t know which one) intentionally tripped me when they were visiting over the summer when we went to one of our local malls to see a movie (I was wearing a plastic back brace at the time so when I fell I slid for ten feet or so and my kneecap caught on every Spanish tile for about ten feet. Still dragged myself up and we all went to the movie. Don’t remember which movie it was because I was in excruciating pain for the whole time.

Tacking on, I've been a CPAP user for 15+ years and I love it. I call it my Pavlov mache; the mask goes on and I go out. It was a struggle to use it at first until my doctor had me try the Desensitization method. I've been a daily compliant user ever since.

I never thought I'd be a homeowner. I became disabled before age 30 due to genetic fuckery (acute intermittent porphyria aka "vampire disease" aka "the madness of king George" aka "everything hurts alllllll the time) and I ended up on social security disability which is like $1000 a month and definitely not enough to survive on anywhere. My husband was working for decades, but then *he* got severely injured, so now he is a disabled veteran, but at least the VA pays ~$4000 a month so we mostly survive ok (we'd be doing much much better if our 45 year old house would stop breaking!!!!!!!!) Anyway, we never thought we'd own a home, and we had to leave New England and move to the Midwest to be able to afford to buy a house, but we did it and our kids have a wonderful home in a nice neighborhood. Although once we're able to fix the leaky roof, it'll be MUCH nicer lol but we're still paying off a 12k plumbing fix and a 16k heating fix, so it'll be a while before we can figure out the roof.

View on Reddit #47303864

TheRazor_sEdge@reddit

Thank you for this, I've actually started tracking my blood pressure daily! I'm in good health and all my blood work is fine, but lordy you just don't know. My friends were healthy too, until they weren't. One of them lives alone like me, and had a freaking stroke while she was on a zoom call. She had symptoms exactly as you describe, but just figured she was tired. We live in a foreign country and she didn't know what to do, so called her landlord. This makes it extra scary! Her stroke prompted me to make an emergency plan. I know where the closest ER is, and have the address and emergency numbers in my phone as well.
View on Reddit #47309449

Excellent_Budget9069@reddit

Good for you for thinking ahead. When I had my symptoms it was 11:00 at night. I was in denial thinking this isn't happening I am only 49. And like your friend I just thought I needed rest and so I went on to bed and had my stroke in my sleep. I had a dream that I had a stroke. Then I woke up and thought to myself well that was scary. Got out of bed and fell down because my right side was useless. Had to go to rehab and figure out how to walk again and otherwise use my right side. I was determined to get myself back and I did.

I got a CPAP after I apparently stopped breathing during a colonoscopy and when I did breathe, it terrified the anesthesiologist and the doctor performing the scope. Anyway, up to that point I didn't know I had a problem. But after I got the CPAP, headaches went away. I napped every day for 2-3 hours in the afternoons and that stopped once I started sleeping properly with the CPAP. And about 3 weeks later my doctor had to lower my blood pressure medicine because I nearly fainted with my BP being too low. But most importantly, the acid reflux disappeared. There's nothing more horrifying than waking up choking/smothering on your own stomach bile because acid started shooting into your throat and lungs while you were asleep and unaware it was happening. All caused by my severe sleep apnea. I hope you stick with it, OP. Yeah we're old and need this kind of crap, but I promise you that if you can just give it time to get used to wearing it...you'll see your health improve. It's amazing how many problems sleep apnea causes.

I have never had an official diagnosis, but my nose is slightly deviated to my left from a fight in high school, so I'm thinking it's probably a deviated septum. But again, no official diagnosis. I snore, while my brother and sister don't. Could be a genetic thing that they didn't get though.

View on Reddit #47247159

WalkerTimothyFaulkes@reddit

I didn't have the sore throat or mental fog, but your CPAP may take care of it. I never in a million years thought the acid reflux disease was tied to my snoring, but it sure went away the very day I started using a CPAP, and I have only had a little heartburn here and there. Definitely no choking/smothering on my own stomach acid anymore. So it's possible those things you're describing will go away or be fixed too. I'm almost sure the mental fog is from improper rest, but you'll see if you stick with it. Best of luck!

Yep. I always figured I'd have my first heart attack before I turned 30. Heart problems run in my family, I've always been fat and out of shape, and I had high blood pressure in my teens and early 20s. Now here I am, 52 still fat and out of shape but somehow my blood pressure is in the normal range and no heart attack. Cancer also runs heavily in my family, like everyone on my mom's side of the family gets cancer, and usually they get it the first time in their 30s or 40s and I'm still cancer free. Even after being a smoker for decades of my life I think I've lived to an older age than any other family member without getting cancer.

Got mine with perimenopause. Took way too long to figure out. For a while my neuro was looking at sudden barometric pressure changes as a trigger. I tried out some earplugs that smoothe out sudden pressure changes. They're called WeatherX earplugs and they're widely available in pharmacies in my area. They have a membrane inside that gradually equalizes the pressure in your ears during quick-change weather. They're like $10/pair iirc. You might check em out and see if thru help you. They didn't help my migraines but I keep some for airplane travel.

The WeatherX company also has an app you can set up to warn you about impending barometric pressure changes so users can deploy the earplugs before the shift starts. Iirc you wear them before and during the pressure change, then about an hour after. It's not always convenient to have to wear them at a moment's notice, but it's dam sure more convenient than a migraine. I hope they help. Good luck!

Nope also a gen x thing. I remember we did a lot of those drills particularly in 82-83, when I was in the 8th grade. Since I'm in CA they called them earthquake drills at the time but I knew better, I followed political news back then. And how many years went by before we were finally informed about the glitch in 83 with the computer in Russia? No coincidence.

Simple carbs, cut those way back and up your soluble fiber. Carbs are ok as long as you also have a soluble fiber back. Eat non-starchy veggies. Hubs is at 5.6 now from the 8.9 he was diagnosed at. Plus he's lost weight which helps. I'm not diabetic and mine is only 5.5. He's also on 2000mg of metformin daily and 1 mg of ozympic weekly. A coworker of mine was diagnosed and hers was 14 something. Crazy.

Less white bread/rice, more whole grains, more meat, more veggies. If you like to bake, swap out 1/2 the bread flour/white flour for almond flour, use more spices, and switch sugar to allulose. Make your own tomato sauce, and use carrots to cut the acidity instead of sugar. Talk to a dietician about your diet and what changes you can make to it.

Hope this doesn’t sound like bragging because it’s truly more gratefulness For me, I can’t believe that I am healthier at 52 than I was at 42 and I was at 32 and likely at least more fit than I was at 22 after college. Never thought I would see 32 waist jeans again. The last time was 1989 my junior year of high school when I was on the tennis team. Struggled with weight my entire life after athletics. With that came the requisite health issues, high blood pressure, bad cholesterol, pre-diabetes, etc.. I would work so damn hard to lose weight and just always be freaking hungry and miserable. I swear I went from 280 to about 225 at least four times in my adult life. About three years ago I had hit the three Bill’s number and literally just gave up considering I had come off of working so hard to get to about 220 and was miserable February 2023 doctor put me on Ozempic and it was light bulb moment time . I felt like I could eat like a normal person and not be miserable. Enjoyed cooking stopped fast food started walking a lot, etc. etc.. Not thrilled there is no offramp at this point for the medicine, but literally almost died last fall from a routine but difficult hernia operation that turned into a hematoma that turned into a nasty strep infection on the mesh. Unbelievably, I never actually ran a fever never got sick but had to deal with wound care for about three months and an open wound with a vac Firmly believe that if I had been in the shape, I was two years ago I certainly wouldn’t have made it Oh, I do wear progressive when I don’t wear contacts, but I have really good luck with wearing contacts one eye for near and one eye for far. Took to it right away, and I don’t even think about it most of the time.

Got my first bifocals at 43 (little over 2 years ago). I think I much preferred my previous glasses. They’re no line bifocals and they often mess me up when looking at things close to me. I still end up removing my glasses half the time so what’s the point? My prescriptions has not gotten worse in 15 years so that’s good.

I’m all up to date on my shots, I’m seeing a nutritionist and a physical therapist for an ongoing shoulder issue. Almost every week since October, I’ve had some kind of appointment. I got out of the Marine Corps in 1988, and just signed up at 58.
