I’m buying a 35 year old car. Advice on what to look out for?

If the coolant hoses haven't been replaced in the last 15 years, replace them all. Any coolant hose failure can be very expensive. Replacing them all on your own terms is less of a hassle than getting a tow and replacing them anyway. Think that used the 3S engine and that it's a non-interference design, meaning that if the timing belt breaks, the pistons won't crash into and bend valves (or worse). Start saving up for that job and do it before the belt breaks and you have to pay for the task AND a tow. Any flexible brake lines are also suspect. After those things have been addressed, replace things as they fail. Even with all that, think you'll find your average monthly expenses over the first 2 years of driving are still less than a new car payment. Congratulations on the car!
