Any actual compacts available in North America (or Canada)?

Hey all, wife wants a car for work and back commuting, that will be all the use of this car, maybe maximum 20km stop/go traffic a day. Naturally good fuel economy is a must, but electrics are way too expensive and do not come used with any relevant warranty so I can't consider that, even though I would love to (are there any compact electrics?) We got back from Europe and small cars are just everywhere there (comically small), I drove a Renault Twingo there and that thing is tiny and doesn't move anywhere, but it would be perfect as it does the job in the city. Are there any cars that are actually compact that we can look at? Every AI article blurts out things like Corolla, Civic and other silly suggestions which are considered pretty much full size in Europe lol. I doubt you can get a 75HP Twingo equivalent here, but there has to be something that is cheap but good for work commuting. If you can, give me a list in order of reliability that is available in Canada (should be similar to US).
