instructor wants to charge £37, that seems like a lot for an hour or is that just the normal rate these days?

For God's sake, the first two answers are "I live in Australia" and "I don't know, I passed years ago", the latter of those sounding like a crappy Amazon "Ask a Customer" answer 😆 A quick check shows [the RAC stating](https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/learning-to-drive/how-much-does-it-cost-to-learn-to-drive/) it costs around £25-£30 an hour. But [another site shows](https://www.passmefast.co.uk/resources/learning-to-drive/driving-lesson-rates) £35 is most common, with 5% of instructors charging the kind of cost you've seen. Unless you're living in London (in which case that cost may be pretty usual) it may be worth shopping around. Having said all that, none of these costs are fully up-to-date and with the way cost of living and inflation is going, that may be the going rate right now.

Average where I am is apparently around £40+ an hour, even higher for an automatic, which I was looking to do. Was hoping to start this year but really not sure I can afford to.

I can believe that. It was £25 when I learnt 15 years ago which would be £38 adjusting for inflation.

Same, in SE London/Kent border. I paid £22 an hour for ~10 hours of lessons in 2006, then never carried on. My partner paid £35 an hour in Norfolk this year. The increase is mental. She did go with one she liked/trusted rather than the cheapest, but even still.

Our prices at Craig Baker Driver Training are £40ph we also have people that tell us they cant afford it so we offer them a lesson every other week instead of every week and this sometimes makes it easier for them to afford, of course it will take longer to learn but its better than not at all, just an idea for you [Driving Lessons Wigan](https://www.cbakerdt.co.uk/driver-training/carlessons/car-lessons.html)

wait shouldn't it be cheaper for an automatic. There is less to teach
View on Reddit #4953344

TemporaryInfamous669@reddit

It’s apparently not easier to drive an automatic…. I’ve been told. Anyway the instructors are teaching you the road rules.
View on Reddit #5203386

lemonbettareitnol@reddit

They are teaching you the road rules and how to control the car. And anyone who tells you it's not easier to drive an automatic is full of shit. There is a reason you can't drive a manual if you do a test in an automatic but can drive an automatic if you do a test in a manual. An automatic is easier. If you take away one of the factors you have to account for things become easier. How could anyone suggest it's not.
View on Reddit #5205386

PassiveTheme@reddit

Plus, if you learn in an automatic, you'll test in an automatic which will only allow you to drive automatics. There's not only less to learn, you're also getting an inferior product
View on Reddit #4962537

But far less Demand I imagine, so probably the car sits idle for longer. Also the costs to insure and service are a bit higher with Autos.

Why automatic? Cars are going that way but deffo better to be able to drive both
View on Reddit #4956450

Sphealwithme@reddit

Partially because the two cars I’d most likely to practice in outside of any lessons and drive once I’m able are both automatic. Also because between dyspraxia and an anxiety disorder I’d rather minimize stress as much as possible. I agree though, being able to do both would be best ultimately.

Got to remember, it's not only there time you're paying for, it is also insurance, fuel cost and upkeep of the car cost. Also you could end up damaging their car, or in the worse case have a crash that puts them out of work for a while. It would be like asking a footballer to work min wage, what are they gonna do if they get injured?
View on Reddit #4939242

tribble0001@reddit

Mobile phone, website (if they have one), lease of the car, specialist insurance, fuel, franchise (if they are on one), membership of professional bodies, CPD, renewal of badge (every four years), wear and tear on the vehicle if you own it, stationary, teaching and record keeping apps, book keeping fees and sundries. Yep, running a business sucks. I leased my cars, they can pay for servicing and problems. I wasn't on a franchise, which can be expensive.

He was medically, fucked. Retired and suddenly all the support fucked off and was paid by the meagre allowance. Took like a 10k a year bath by retiring. It is surprising how little we give people who may have spent years in RAF, Merchant Navy etc and then get sick. Was far more when he was "looking for a job" v being retired and I have been fucked over by JSA repeatedly. My brother is on PIP or whatever it is now, I have no idea how, he did a 30 day walking challenge, can drive and has no mental issues, just a back thats not as bad as mine and presumably less moral issues about lying.
View on Reddit #4954802

tribble0001@reddit

My god it's like a mirror. Early 2020 fucked me over and then the lockdowns hit. There is only enough keyworker students to go around so my business debts grew and my health needed to come first. Now I'm also a bit fucked, four or five herniated discs in my back, depression, a hip that doesn't want to comply with hip things, and a lot of other issues, and all I get is carers allowance for my daughter. We just lost a shed load of money per month so we also barely survive at the moment.
View on Reddit #4957536

Acceptable-Floor-265@reddit

Thats way worse than my back is by the sound of it and I just got my probation extended by 3 months cos eczema left me bleeding on the keyboard. Decision made after I worked with a broken toe (my 4th somehow, 1st at this place). That is so many discs, I have L4/5 and 5/6 I think, gave up keeping track. 5 MRI's confirm whatever tho. I hate how we treat people unable to work, I'm soon to be a higher rate tax payer and would rather pay for 1000 people claiming falsely than 1 misssed out. Sadly it is the opposite way around, I know people with MS who were rejected cos given an hour they made it the 200m to school with their kid cos they knew they had to go to school and would not let them down. Healthcare is fucked, especially now after over a decade of a specific party making it so. My SO cannot work, for reasons (not MS). Cos they struggle and make it they are denied. We need a far better social healthcare network and support network, unfortunately part of my work is ensuring funding for this, it is heart breaking how many are not supported. My MIL is worse off because of it, that should not be enough to turn someones opinion but for a lot that is the case. Not my problem etc. We once ruled the world, yay us for basically crimes against humanity? The one thing we had was good healthcare, now that is being taken away. I may have private but most people do not, it makes me so fucking angry. I want me, my kids, my SO, my neighbours, everyone in the world to have better than they do. But its stacked against everyone. I am not religious, the one thing I saw that made sense to me was leave the world better than you found it, make a positive impression. Your name is not important, your impact is. I made plenty of money fucking about with financial crap but I made a billion times more impact ensuring the local homeless shelters funding was secured via sorting out support worker funding. I do direct donations where I can, my mum dear of her thought I meant meet the people concerned, I did not of course since well all the ethical and cringe of this. She just thought they want to help cos she was rather shielded. Makes more effort than me but just did not consider it. I just wanted to do direct cos it was not corporately messed about with but I knowledge to address this while she is retired and has the time. Went to a womens shelter in the end with kids toys and stuff, not new, but loads we had accumulated spare. It went down well, my kids know how lucky they are, some more than others as we were better off as I was. Local homeless place gave me my shot, paid me well, made me investigate the issues. I was not homeless but I could help and it helped me having experience. A friends friend died from related issues, in "my" area, they actually hated each other and had been at odds for some years but they cried when they died. We still send a donation anonymously in their name to support people with similar mental health problems. I know this is also out of sight for some, I donated money, fuck I could not imagine that years ago, we were on survival mode. It happens, I also know those with less than me donated more, time, money or otherwise. Tesco maybe a fucked up corporation but every little does help.

It’s not the cost of the car it’s the fact less people want to learn auto so the instructor has to travel greater distances between lessons

I've had 2 instructors in London and around 30 lessons but I feel I got nowhere with the first one and the second one was a man who kept saying things that made me uncomfortable. Feel I've sunk lots of monet into it and got nowhere. It's like 64 for 2 hours which is quite a lot. I didn't know whether to take the hit and do an intensive course. As I'm in London I do no driving in between so I feel I forget quite a lot in-between lessons. I have ADHD and dyslexia so I find driving quite difficult

I wish I was still teaching because you were the sort of student I loved teaching. Search for instructors who specialise in SEND, they are out there. The Queen Elizabeth Fund, provide training for instructors to further their skills with SEN. I taught students with ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalcia, ADD, and a lot of parents came to me specifically to teach their children. And I was very open and honest with people on their costs (if it was going to take a while) and if they should switch to auto. However, my wife is 42 and still can't drive. Neither can her parents and one of her sisters. For some people, they just don't need to learn.

A quick hack: It isn't left or right, it's your side and my side. So, we're taking the next road on your side of the car. At the end of the road we'll be turning to my side of the car. The slowly bring in my side, left or your side, right. Also when you book theory and driving tests, there is an allowance for SEND candidates.

I charge £37.50ph in Sheffield - student city with two universities so competition, supply/demand and the covid backlog are the causes mainly. But I do offer 10hr blocks for £350, with £35ph being my actual per hour requirement to keep the books ticking over. Most people go for the blocks, which is good for me because I can charge them if they cancel late or don’t show up so I have both a safety net and a guarantee of repeat business, and it’s good for them because it’s cheaper than paying per lesson. For every £1 we earn, roughly half will go on business maintenance costs, be it fuel, insurance, car finance, repairs, maintenance, tyres, stationary, admin software etc etc

In my mind charging so much that only people from affluent areas and rich families can afford driving lesson is bloody ridiculous. Yes insurance is expensive: "if they can't afford lessons then how can they afford to run a car?" Was a very popular phrase I would hear. Some companies see a licence as a qualification, so owning a car isn't needed. Having licence is a bonus.

During lockdown a lot of ADIs struggled for work but still had to pay their business expenses, (this is before the government decided to make the SEISS payments to self employed.), therefore they increased their prices. I hope the quality of instructors has raised at in proportion to what they are now being paid. I was paying £15 an hour in 2003 which went up to around £25 in 2014. In that final year, I went through five different instructors to find someone who could actually *teach* and was willing too. The thing the learner quite often doesn't know what they need so the instructor saying 'oh, yes we'll just drive around and you'll catch on in time ' makes sense and might work for some, but definitely not everyone.

£22 in 2010/2011. I also went through five instructors. One just wanted to let me drive around and ignored me completely while he was playing on his phone the entire time. I got to the point I could drive perfectly on A-Roads from Nottingham to Sheffield with supervision, but I couldn’t park the car when I arrived!

Annual_Opposite2771@reddit

The first guy insisted on singing the most homophobic, racist and anti-women shanty songs you can possibly imagine. It was insanely distracting and he called me a bore for asking him to stop, the final straw was him answering his phone at a really bad moment and trying to blame me for my lack of experience. I'd already paid for 10 lessons with him so I endured it. Another would scream and shout abuse while kicking the gear box, he was insanely contolling and wouldn't let me even turn the steering wheel without an instruction from him. Then he'd insist on us spending the entire time driving around a particular housing estate where all the teenage mums hung out. He'd oogle them and make remarks about he'd like to do them. 20 lessons with him, I felt terrible dumping him because he was highly recommended.

Some of them are truly awful, unhinged people. I had one who screamed in my face ten days before my driving test, saying I was an awful driver and I’d never pass. I managed to find another instructor in the last week before my test and got a strong pass, first time.

Currently 0 because my instructor is making up the hours before she is allowed to charge. I dread how much money I'll be spending once she's fully qualified. 4 years ago I was paying 27 but I gave up. This year most people I know are paying 35

My brother and my coworker both pay around £30/hr, but a few years ago (when I was learning) prices varied from £25 to £35 an hour. However, I'd have expected that to have shifted upwards slightly in the last few years, so £37 doesn't sound that wild. You could always check out the prices of other local instructors first, though.

I paid £33 an hour 3 years ago (passed 3 weeks before C19 hit properly) so I wouldn’t say that’s an unreasonable amount. However, it’s always worth shopping round. Just remember to check their reviews/success stories before committing. You don’t want to pay less if it’s detrimental to your learning. Good luck!

Multiple that by 8 and you get a day rate for a single employee. About 300 per day sounds about right to me.

how is that a lot for an hour? Once youve factored in wages, insurance, tax, marketing, car wear and tear etc. I'd argue that's actually pretty cheap.
