Where to buy Tokaji?
Posted by sebastianpc@reddit | budapest | View on Reddit | 22 comments
I am currently visiting this beautiful city. I want to bring home some Tokaji. I’ve found some Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos, but would love to find some higher Puttonyos. Would anyone happen to know where I could potentially find that? Thanks!

6 doesn’t exist anymore for several years. The maximum is 5 because of changes in the regulations.
I recommend you visit Bortársaság. They have plenty of shops around the city and know their wine.
NotYetGroot@reddit
Is it available by the glass at restaurants and bars, or only by the bottle?
igenigen@reddit
Glass of course as well, but bottle will be cheaper as it’s a dessert wine.
CharacterOperation93@reddit
Nope. You can buy many 6 puttonyos. The ‘asszueszencia’ name was banned in 2008.

Is this one of the names that was banned then?

Yep, it was a 2003 harvest, and was marketed before 2008. Since than there are ‘aszu’ and ‘eszencia’ but there is no ‘aszueszencia’ allowed to be marketed. The actual Hungarian wine law is from 2020, and it authorize the ‘Tokaj Borvidék Hegyközségi Tanács’ (Tokaj Wine Region Community Council) to create the detailed rules - what kind of grapes allowed to use, enable/prohibit methods, etc. The rule set is published in every year, the current one is https://tokajiborvidek.hu/jogszabalyok2/Term%C3%A9kle%C3%ADr%C3%A1sok/Tokaj%20Term%C3%A9kle%C3%ADr%C3%A1s/Tokaj-OEM%20Term%C3%A9kle%C3%ADr%C3%A1s%2010a%20verzi%C3%B3.pdf

Just a question -- why do you want more than 6 Puttonyos?
The puttony number is based on the content of sugar and sugar-free extract in the mature wine. Aszú ranges from 3 puttonyos to 6 puttonyos, with a further category called Aszú-Eszencia representing wines above 6 puttonyos. Eszencia, also called nectar, is often described as one of the most exclusive wines in the world, although technically it cannot even be called a wine because its enormous concentration of sugar.
IMHO, 5 is the best tasting. 6 gets really expensive in comparison and for no or not much flavor benefit.

5 puttonyos is the only one i can find at home in Denmark, and I really enjoy sweet Wine. So now that I’m here I would like the experience them
VadPuma@reddit
I think you are tasting the best one then. Maybe try different brands?

Search for Bortársaság. They have many shops in the city.

Szepsy is the best in Tokaj. I love his wines, but they are expensive.
Nemtuja@reddit
This is one of the best quality Tokaji Aszú currently on the market.

I recommend them, they have Eszencia and other high-end wines: WINE NOT? Hungarian Wine Bar & Shop
Foreign_Top_1890@reddit
You cannot go higher than 6 Puttonyos. Above that it is called Eszencia. You can get some nice Aszú wines at Bortársaság or Culinaris shops. If you would like to buy the absolute best, buy from Szepsy winery!
sebastianpc@reddit (OP)
Thank you! Would Eszcensia be possible to buy from those two?
hanky_enki@reddit
Yes, if you can spare €2000
Here you go

This is not Aszú Eszencia, but Natúr Eszencia(Aszú Eszencia has half the sugar and double the alcohol as Natúr Eszencia). Sauska has Aszú Eszencia at Bortársaság for a much more affordable price.
