Awwwww. Like that was a dis?
My point still stands, while middle-aged losers think some downvotes really did anything like we are a bunch of Zoomers that need digital affirmations to tell us what are opinions should be,

Bunch of overgrown kids.
He fucked up Unions, secretly sold missiles to Iran, structurally created the ever-growing wealth inequality in America by slashing taxes on the top 1%, refused to address the epidemic, backed illegal rebels in Nicaragua against US law, stole from the Social Security fund, raised unemployment, debt and tax rates on lower-income individuals.
Boy, you really better have some good reasons to back your adoration of the man. One has to actively try to fuck shit up that hard.
Weird because that entire 8 years he didn't even have control of Congress. Lord knows how he "stole" from SS with a massive Democrat majority.
What I do know is the economy was amazing with my blue collar parents able to make over 6 figures combined at their factory jobs with more available hours for anyone that wanted to worked them. And they were able to by their first home and first new car ever also thanks to dropping interest rates. If my single mom aunt of 3 kids was able to prosper. So spare me the "wealth inequality" speech you learned from some jaggoff professor in the 90s.
He also, no thanks to people like you, actually confronted the USSR imperialist expansionism in Central America and in other parts of the world, leading to the collapse of Communism....oh now I see why you dont like him.
Boy, I can only imagine you are one of those clowns that likely think he had nothing to do with that, or laughably gave the credit to Carter.

That is why the man won two landslides. The 2nd, 49 out of 50 states.

Because everyone was just not le Reddit smart, right?
>What I do know is the ... spare me the "wealth inequality" speech you learned from some jaggoff professor in the 90s.
Classic. Fuck the data, yeah?
>And if you are still whining about the air controller's union, then you are just being obtuse.
Reagan set an example as to how the govt. would respond to workers striking for their right, a bad example. Wanting better work conditions and pay is not obtuse.
>He also, no thanks to people like you, actually confronted the USSR imperialist expansionism ... leading to the collapse of Communist
The USSR was already in some deep shit before Reagan took office. Gorbachev played an important role in breakup of the Soviet Union. Reagan had a hand, but handing over the entire credit to him is just plain dumb.
>That is why the man won two landslides. The 2nd, 49 out of 50 states.
Popularity is no evidence of a competent leader. That you still believe in this is a testament to the potency of the copium you are on.
>Classic. Fuck the data, yeah?
"Wealth inequality" is of no concern to me if you don't engage in actual thievery to obtain it. Unless you were too young to have noticed, but the 80s were full of new industries that created products that became extremely popular, that happen to make the people that owned the companies a lot of money. People then had a lot more disposable income (or stupid lines of credit) and decided to buy it.
>Reagan set an example as to how the govt. would respond to workers striking for their rights,
They were not legally allowed to strike. This wasnt the freaking Teamsters or UAW.
They didnt care, and they forfeited their jobs as a result. FA/FO.

>The USSR was already in some deep shit before Reagan took office.
Yup. I told myself this guy was going to post that. basically "Uhhhhh, they meant to do that anyway!".

>Popularity is no evidence of a competent leader.
Unless it is someone you like.....yeah, we know, dude.
So tax break for the ultra rich and corporations and tax increases for the common people is fine according to you? And then there's the constant quotation of anecdotal stories instead of reliance on data. For all I know, the next thing you might say is that climate change is a hoax.
Unpopular opinion. My dad wouldn't have been able to retire in his mid 50s if it weren't for the gains the market made in the 80s. Dad worked at a polypropylene plant, was plant leader in the OCAW, and helped negotiate several strikes. But even he will tell you his retirement nest egg got massive in the 80s. Dad retired in 2004 at 57.
Yeah. Took a hit when Enron collapsed because he had money with them, but he has done very well. Not a millionaire by any stretch, but he lives comfortably on a small farm, taking care of mom, 10 cows, and a very angry cat.
A LOT of white working class people refuse to give credit to their union. They'll vote Republican every time. I've had them tell me that greedy liberal unions donating to pro union democrats are ruining this country, and Social Security is a failure, "Thank God for my pension." in the same breath. Your dads retirement has *much* more to do with his union than Ronald May He Burn in Hell Reagan.
It wasn't his pension. He actually invested his money. Worked with a guy through Charles Schwab. He gets a pension now, but he couldn't touch it until he was 60 per union agreement. Dad is a staunch labor supporter. Still refuses to shop at a local strip mall because it was built by non union labor. If it weren't for the booming 80s, dad couldn't have retired at the age he did.
Very few people have done as much damage to this country as Reagan. You’ve got W and Trump, sure. W was more of a conventionally duplicitous president responsible for the worst foreign policy disaster in our nation’s history. One that Republicans are now pretending they were against all along. Trump and his supporters are outright ready to tear down our democracy if they don’t get what they want. (If you’re about to write, “wE’Re a rEpUbLiC, NoT a dEmOcRaCy,” you need to read about what those words actually mean.)
But we can all trace it back to Reagan. From his excuse-making for the up-to-then most corrupt, criminal President. To his wink-wink, nudge nudge, wink wink, dog whistles while pretending he didn’t actually say some horribly racist shit. From his supply-side economics that despite forty years of failure, Republicans still cling to. To his union busting, his hysterics on socialism, his administration’s gleefully cruel non-existent policy on the AIDS crisis, his cozying up to evangelical bigots. Dude was such a piece of shit.
If we had the ability to erase one person from American political history, it should be him.
I grew up in the Bay Area, and one of my exes’ aunt was one of the mentally ill patients that were turned out to the street when douchebag was Governor of CA.
okay -- so no one was saying she couldn't be in an institution, just that she couldn't be FORCED by govt to be there. I agree our mental health services in this country have a lot to be desired but to say that the places people were institutionalized were okay, is just wrong.
People just 'pushed away' those that weren't considered 'normal' and it was bad.
They weren't all forced to be there. Reagan cut the funding for mental hospitals and purposely had these people thrown out on the streets. He was was straight up trash.
"In 1981 President Ronald Reagan, who had made major efforts during his Governorship to reduce funding and enlistment for California mental institutions, pushed a political effort through the U.S. Congress to repeal most of MHSA. The MHSA was considered landmark legislation in mental health care policy."
It was horror-show warehousing of the mentally ill. What replaced it was in many respects WORSE. But let's not pretend the old asylums were good. They were at best a nice jail.
Yes, I'm saying let's not pretend the post-war asylum system was worth keeping. The failure to improve care was across the board. Not just something Reagan did. And of course it continues long after his mind melted. It's hard to claim it would have been any better without deinstitutionalization.
Wait. Wut? So one guy can tear a system, faulty as it was, and replace it with nothing. And it was “the systems failure to replace it”?!?
How the hell does this work? And how the hell do I claim this “non-responsibility” clause while I’m at work and screwing shit up?
One guy did not tear down the system. It was a process that took decades, and involved primarily state governments. It's not like the feds ran the asylums.
Federal funding was cut off. And yeah the system was imperfect, but I’m not sure having the mentality I’ll running around homeless on the street is a better solution. And that was exactly what their intention was, put them out on the street.
Federal grants from the MHSA were ended just after they had been created, which certainly didn't help. But the push to end funding was overwhelmingly with the states, who ran the asylums and saw them as a budget drain. As far as whether deinstitutionalization was better, I don't see any states red or blue trying to start up they asylum system again. Reagan's been dead a long time so if it was him, this could have been changed. The fact is the asylums cost a fortune and were still unspeakable hell holes. They're not a solution to anything.
If you read about lost family it's obviously not hard to think it better to have had Chesterton's Fence remain in place there. Despite issues, things progressed in that setting over time.
Then he did the same thing nationwide as President. A big percentage of people who experience homelessness have untreated mental illness. Had Reagan not closed mental hospitals, they wouldn’t be living on the streets.
Well said! I only thought he was responsible for the wealth disparity, but I think there would be no t**** with this turd. Still a Saint in the eyes of the cult. Pitiful.
A friend and I were at our local watering hole after his death. We were chatting with another guy at the bar that was a little older than us. After a little bit he decided to buy us a round of shots. Cool, right? But he wanted to toast to Reagan. I told him that I absolutely could not do that. The man was taken aback, and my friend was trying to get me to just play along. I was not having any of it.
While I agree my dad was in the Air Force when Reagan was in office and absolutely admired him. I asked my father why and he said military personnel got the raise they deserved. Truly a fuck you I got mine mentality
I really believe that the changes that he and his minions made to this country are the primary source of economic misery that plague our nation, and most of the social misery that springs from that. I really believe we were happier and more united before Reagan. Sure it all was exacerbated by W, and Trump, but RR was the asshole who got the ball rolling.
I feel like now, we're all at each others' throats.
Against socialized medicine? Oh, the irony. He was loved by the military (largest group of socialized medicine users in America) and senior citizens (second largest group).
So there's this book I cannot recommend enough called The Clothes Have No Emperor by Paul Slanksy. It's a day by day rundown of major news events through the 1980s, and really shows the horror show of the Reagan administration wasn't in what they hid, but the crap they blatantly did in plain sight of everyone.
How the grifters, conmen, corporations, thieves, religious right and military industrial complex pillaged the country blind and poisoned social discourse from one recession in 81 until the 87 wall street crash. It's hilarious, absurd, and heartbreaking all at the same time.
When reading about garbage like the junk bonds/savings and loan scandals, televangelist wealth gospel preachers, or grifter politicians of the era it makes me want to cry and laugh all at the same time
I remember it. I forget the book name but I also read how the capitalists in manufacturing cooped Christian preachers to make Christians less socialist aka like Jesus, and more pro-capitalism/you're poor because it's a character flaw.
That book has a lot of Pat Robertson malarkey, from his on the record terrible quotes to his adventures in politics and influence peddling to pushing the religious right into meddling directly into politics. These two faced creeps taking advantage of the poor and desperate never seem to get their comeuppance soon enough.
I was re-reading a Paradox Press comic book series recently, it was a DC imprint that used to put out a lot of those Big Book Of.. series back in the 90's, the Big Book of Scandal has a lot of the 80s TV preachers greatest hits...in comic book form!
I'm reading the opening chapter and what's remarkable to me is how that, at the time, an incoming president being almost 70 years old was considered an issue by the press. Funny, because next year it's going to be between a man who would be 86 by the end of his second term and a guy who's 78 and in terrible health.
At the risk of sounding ageist here, there are very few, if any, global corporations with executive leadership in their eighties. Fuck, assuming I make it that far, I don't wanna do jack shit when I'm that old. I'm gonna sit on my front porch, play acoustic guitar, scream at the neighbor's kids, and pop viagra like jellybeans.
A rare exception. And I don't think Rupert will ever die. He's like that 19-year-old housecat with maybe seven hairs and six teeth total that bites the shit out of you just for walking by.
No, not so much, except they don't even try to bother hiding the corruption, manipulation, greed, or contempt for the American populace any more. It baffles me what used to account for political suicide back in the day seems to go completely unchecked these days
Democrats have politicians who become something of a celebrity - JFK, Clinton, Obama.
The GOP does this in reverse. A certain fake tycoon / reality show host comes to mind, amongst the rest.
They should have given it to Don Knotts instead.
Lazy comedy writers in the 80s couldn't get enough of airplane food or the Jerry Lewis/France thing. I remember some pretty good articles in some old 'zines in the '90s that covered some memorable Jerry weirdness like his annual telethons or the time made a Holocaust dramedy movie called The Day the Clown Cried that was completely filmed but deemed unreleasable
Actually the success of the Berlin Airlift was the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union. It showed the west wasn't going to back down when confronted with soviet bullshit. From that point forward it became a war of attrition.
The corruption at HUD required new rules because Pierce let his subordinates run amok while he watched TV.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pierce
He was completely terrible; my other favorite scumbags were the Keating Five during the Savings and Loan scandal
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keating_Five?wprov=sfla1
How anyone kept voting those guys into office after that confounds me to no end. The rampant stock market manipulation and junk bonds trading destroyed so many people's savings and really fuelled the corporate greed that put so many people out of work, just to allow a select few to get obscenely rich
Paul does a great job coating the poison with the sugar of humor but it's pretty wild what the Reagan administration blatantly got away with. It covers all of the major events, not just the politics, but it was eye opening to revisit many of the times Reagan would just make up ridiculous fictions or misremember plots of old movies and present them as things that actually happened
I still remember when my grandfather was giving me directions in Florida and he told me to take a certain numbered highway and then said “It’s also called, you should excuse the expression, the Ronald Reagan Turnpike.”
Reagan wanted to run as a democrat, originally, but they basically laughed at him.
The republicans saw his potential as a demagogic figurehead and the rest is history.
About socialized medicine: I lived in a country with such a system for many years and I also saw the bad sides of it.
The US have top notch medicine while its society tends to marginalize a huge segment of its population to the point that even Medicaid and Social Security leave these people unable to get good care. That needs to be addressed. The whole game of medical debt is really sad: don't pay, let it go to collection, call and bargain to settle for less. Or wait 7 years and it's off of your credit. And so many people have bad credit and don't give a rat's behind.
I have seen hospitals and PCP offices in a Western nation with socialized medicine. It's not very efficient. It can be dirty. Personnel is worn out and underpaid like you would not believe. Wait time for some specialists can be months away, even if you are in pain. ER is fuhgeddaboudit. Unless you got stabbed and are bleeding to death.
I am not offering any solution. Just saying what I saw and experienced.
“Raggedy muthafucka!”- Dad
My father (silent generation, served in the military) hated this man more than I’ve ever seen him hate anyone ever.
It was a deep and venomous loathing that I didn’t completely understand until I hit my 40s (the age my dad was when this sorry son of a bitch was in office).
Only then did I truly understand what this man did and that the ramifications will be felt for generations to come.
My father’s hatred was well placed.
All written about in the Old Testament New Testament during Jesus days. Do not confuse Jesus, the Holy Ghost, or got our father with what the world does. Jesus spoke against religion and the religious leaders of the day for lining their pockets, who were also politicians at the same time. tax collectors. The Bible says God ihates faulty scales. Look at the tax race. Tax laws. Pensions funds, pilfered by corporate raiders.
Dude was a squealer to the HUAC committee, he named names. Cozying up to McCarthy and destroying innocent people's lives was the beginning of his political career.
The apocrophal story is that Ronald Reagan was the president of the Screen Actors Guild twice (that is, a union, and very much pro-union). Sometime in his second term, he was persuaded to become more and more big-C conservative. I always wonder how, exactly, he was bought; what the price was. He, _obviously_, stayed bought.
By his second term the Alzheimer’s was already setting in. Nancy and his staff were hiding it. He wasn’t making all the decisions. That’s a lot of people that could have been bought, OR if someone found out about his Alzheimer’s and the cover up they could use it for blackmail
My grandfather had surgery for something in the 80s. I was little then, so I know none of the details. But I do remember hearing my mom repeatedly telling various people the story about how when he came out of anesthesia the nurse asked him who the President was and he replied, "Oh, *that* son of a bitch."
We already have socialized medicine in this country in that we already pay for everyone else. Some fat trump humper needs a triple bipass? My rates go up. The only difference between Socialized medicine and our system of Socialized medicine is that our system is for profit and has a huge middleman (insurance companies). For Profit Socialized Medicine. It really is as dumb as it sounds, but then you should meet the dummies that vote to keep our failed system in place.
“… so we need to keep health insurance where it belongs - in the safe, caring hands of the patriotic corporation you work for. And don’t forget to pick up a pack of those smooth-burning Chesterfields on your next trip to the drug store. This is the Gipper signing off.”
All the shit we are facing in the US now traces back to the Reagan’s. Yes, plural. Nancy is not off the hook with that bullshit anti-drug campaign.
And to think, California voted him in as the governor and put him on a steady political path to the top 🤦🏻♂️
Yes, it would have been magnitudes better! Not so much what Carter would have done but what he wouldn't have that Reagan did. Imagine life without trickle down economics, an intact middle class, and no drug war?!
reagan was far superior. We would have continued to have hostages overseas, we would have continued to have 20% inflation...no president is perfect...but wow, to thinking carter would have been better (yes, they both sucked, but reagan actually did a pretty good job with what he had, I haven't voted for a major party candidate for pres for almost 30 years tho)
>We would have continued to have hostages overseas.
The Iranian hostages would have been home sooner, had a deal not been cut with the hostage takers to keep them until Reagan was inaugurated. Do you think they happened to like Reagan better? Their release was Carter's work and the term "October Surprise" was coined by the Reagan campaign, because they were afraid that the hostage release would guarantee Carter's reelection.
>we would have continued to have 20% inflation
You can thank former Fed Chair, Paul Volcker, for getting inflation under control. And you can thank Carter for nominating Volcker to be Fed Chair, and then supporting him when he raised interest rates, against the wishes of pretty much everyone. All Reagan did was take credit for it, while making Volcker's job more difficult.
Reagan committed treason in the Iran contra affair, and the savings and loan scandal caused seniors to commit suicide after losing their life savings.
Reagan is worse than Carter and every other president up until Trump.
“A pretty good job”???? Jfc it’s because of ppl like you who continue to turn a blind eye that this country is in the position it’s in. Do some research and educate yourself, or stop posting public bs
Because making a deal with the Iranians to keep the hostages until after the election was great for democracy. Our part in supporting the Guatemalan genocide. Ignoring the AIDS epidemic was “super ignorable” until Nancy’s favorite actor Rock Hudson got it and she (they) refused to help him. As well as a heterosexual sexual young white boy got it. Introducing crack cocaine and starting the mass incarcerations for minor drug offenses. And on and on.
I’ve always loved the Genesis video ”Land of Confusion”. Sums up Reagan 100%.
You’re literally asking if the current four years of Biden are worse than the Trump administration. I disagree with a lot of Biden’s policies, but it’s good to have an adult at the button again.
lmao trump spews nothing but nonsense all the time. He obviously has dementia. Biden is infinitely better than that twice impeached, treasonous, under-indictment loser.
Yea, like Trump isn’t mentally unstable.
I would rather have someone senile than a lunatic in the White House.
And really, we should all reflect on our choices in the parties we align ourselves with, and ask, out of 324 million people in this country, we picked the two dipshits as our “best of the best?”
That’s a far more important debate than who is senile and who is a psychopath.
Not saying Carter would have been good, but we have since been electing dumbasses into office since then. I was too young to vote back then, and not living in the U.S., so I honestly don’t know the magnitude of Carter’s ineptitude. But at the very least, he wasn’t trying to kill off the middle class.

Complete silence on both sides
Fun fact about the Regans is that Nancy was well known in Hollywood as the blow job queen. Apparently once Ronnie got his knob slobbed by the throat goat he had to lock her down.
This is real. Google it.
In the town where I grew up the guy was practically worshipped. I didn't know the truth about his economic policies, Iran Contra, etc. until I got old enough to do my own reading.
“Trickle down economics”
The response to the AIDS crisis
The war on drugs
Response to the so-called “welfare queen”
These are just four deliberately heinous policies I can think of off the top from him and his administration (and that damn First Lady) that *still* have wide-spread and damaging effects across the country generations later.
Don’t forget the union busting. Reagan fired all the striking air traffic controllers. Banned them from working for the federal government in any position. He was an asshole
Not just them; it was the national pastime for early 80s hardcore bands to take pot shots at The Gipper. Dead Kennedys rewrote the lyrics to California Uber Alles on In God We Trust Inc. to be about Reagan, as well as name checking Cowboy Ronnie on Bleed for Me, but there are a lot of anti Reagan hits and songs that addressed how the actions of his government really eroded the quality of life for people back in the day. JFA (Jody Foster's Army) and Reagan Youth were, by their choice in name extremely anti Reagan. I always got a kick out of an old Alternative Tentacles comp called Let Them Eat Jellybeans featuring a grinning Reagan on the cover giving a thumbs up. Or even better yet, the Dayglo Abortions Feed Us a Fetus album featuring Ronnie and Nancy about to chow down on a baby corpse.
Zero Boys: Civilizations Dying
Suicidal Tendencies: I Shot The Devil
Shattered Faith: Reagan in '81
JFA: Jody Foster's Army
DOA: Fucked Up Ronnie
DRI: Reaganomics
Direct Control: Ronnie's Dead
Wasted Youth: Reagan's In
Government Issue: Hey Ronnie
Ramones: Bonzo Goes to Bitburg
Minutemen: If Reagan Played Disco
Dead Milkmen: Right Wing Pigeons
Dayglo Abortions: Ronald McRaygun
The Proletariat: Voodoo Economics
Reagan Youth: Reagan Youth, New Aryans
Circle Jerks: Stars and Stripes, When the Shit Hits the Fan
There are a ton more but that's all I can remember off the top of my head
Disposable Heroes version of California Uber Alles also warrants noting! The line about Pete Wilson, and Reagan in veiled notation... ("You might remember the last one this state sent.")
It was funny later on when Jello did that record with the Melvins and they changed the lyrics to California Uber Alles again to mention Gov. Schwarzenegger
It bothers me how the ideas and rhetoric of the day seem a common sense opposite to modern times. It places a fascinating idea in my head, which ideologies that majorities share will become legislation to devastating effect in the current era. Something I've realized is all of the population is stupid, willing to believe anything panderable to their psyche, hold their ideas as truth. I'm no exception. Regan won by nearly the entire USA turning red, and not even due to the reasons we believe we vote today. He genuinely convinced the entire system he was worthy, not in a douche V turd way, but everyone loved him.
It says to write your congressman!
"Dear Senator _____, as someone who has operable cancer i'd like to have the oppurtunity to go bankrupt and lose my life's savings in seeking treatment. Please do not burden me with government socialized medicine that might support me financially at the expense of a smaller tax return..."
My Dad had to go to a dinner event for work and the Reagans were there and made my Mom go with him but didn't tell her they would be there.
My Mom refused to greet them or take a photo and told my Dad that if he took a photo with them that she'd divorce them.
I love my Mom. I loathe Ronald and Nancy Reagan.
Growing up in a conservative and religious town, I followed my parents, who really supported Reagan and the GOP. By the time I got to college, I learned so much about politics and society that my political views altered. I've been a centrist for most of my adult life, leaning left as I've gotten older.
Perhaps it's just my background experience (especially that I became a newspaper reporter) that allowed me to keep my mind open about things. That, and I realized how bad my parents were as people that made me turn against them and their political beliefs.
Reagan also supported the Black Lists and congratulated people who "named names." Against his own colleagues.
He was always a giant piece of shit. But he had charisma that drew in the country folk to the GOP religion.
