Do you think the population of dogs in the UK is out of control and unmanageable?

Simply too many dogs now. A walk is now spoilt by a series of encounters with small, yappy toy dogs, their owners parading them about on ridiculous extending leads. Not one dog, but often two or three.

I don't know if there are too many dogs but we are certainly running out of branches for people to hang bags filled with shit on.

THIS. Just going for a quick walk in the woods by our street, there is dog shite everywhere. On the floor, hung up on barbed wire fencing. It’s rank. We are a dirty people.

Yes it's ridiculous the amount of people that own dogs now in the UK.
My issue lies with people treating them as a fashion accessory. I have neighbours who have dogs and can't look after them properly, barking all day and night. Dog owners letting their dogs off a lead and not taking any responsibility of thier dog, running up and jumping, and slobbering over you! You can't go for a walk more than 5 minutes without being harrased by someone's out of control dog!
15-20 years ago people only had dogs who were properly trained and took responsibility of them when out. When dog owners went on holiday, they were taken to kennels where they were properly looked after, not dumped on friends and relatives to pick up the slack!
People also made sure their dogs were home with adequate care. There are too many people that cant look after themselves financially and yet decide to have a dog! I know this is a problem on a wider scale. That's not fair on the dogs themselves.
I do like dogs, but it's getting ridiculous the amount of people buying them before having a serious think weather they can properly dedicate to looking after them!

A lot of people don't realize the commitment to raise a dog. Or any pet. Puppies are small and cute but they are hard work and dogs need consistent ongoing training and attention. A lot of people treat dogs like an accessory or a child and don't train it or socialise it. People are happy to have their dog trash the house or bark all day because it's cute.
The problem is that all the people who aren't great dog owners don't think they are the problem. And fixing the issue isn't practical. A licence to breed or own a dog will be unenforceable at scale. You can't force people to attend puppy school. How can you make people pick up shit when we can't stop people fly tipping in the town centre.
I have a dog, grown up with dogs, worked with dogs, my family responsibly bred dogs. So I'm a big dog fan but there are some awful owners bringing up awful dogs.

During covid the price of puppies shot up because people took advantage of the fact that puppies were in demand by people who had notions of family pets as they were working from home. Lots of these puppies were later “sold due a change in personal arrangements”. Meanwhile the breeders were laughing all the way to the bank with their money and lots of dogs were left homeless!

The number of shit owners and backyard breeders are a problem.
But without stricter breeding control and a highly unlikely ownership licence or mandatory training, little will change.
