Why Do I Fight Sleep?

I’m always exhausted and I can’t understand how I won’t let myself sleep when I’m tired. Anyone else?

Adding that I’m a similar struggler here. Anything help since you asked this question?

A melatonin prescription from my GP and I have a diagnosis of ME. If you can, give melatonin a try!
GlitchingGecko@reddit
In what way do you not 'let yourself'?
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
It’s so weird. I’ll go to bed but then read or look at my phone even if I can barely keep my eyes open. It’s like I fight it.
GlitchingGecko@reddit
That's not fighting it, that's just being addicted to your phone.
Put it on to charge, and once you get into bed, don't pick it back up.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
I’ve always done it. Pre-mobile, I’d read and do exactly the same! Insane really.
GlitchingGecko@reddit
Pretty easy just to put WHATEVER down.
If you're laying awake for hours with your eyes closed, not doing anything but trying to sleep, that's when it's an actual problem.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
That’s the issue - I refuse to! I may try to sleep by just simply closing my eyes like most normal people but it rarely works. I think I need to investigate podcasts…
New_Expectations5808@reddit
This is all bullshit. Put your phone, book or whatever down and close your eyes. It's not rocket science.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
I literally find it extremely hard to just do it. That’s why I’m here.
New_Expectations5808@reddit
You need to make a decision. Only you.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
I totally agree. I think I’ll look into the suggestion of listening to a podcast to see if it helps.
Mobile_Delivery1265@reddit
You’re creating another excuse for yourself. Listen dude, you’re an adult. Time to make a decision and stick to it. Put all of those things outside your room, go to bed and close your eyes. Eventually you’ll fall asleep. It’s time to stop this primary school nonsense
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
I am going to move things round in my room, I think, and make it more restful.
New_Expectations5808@reddit
No because that includes your phone, which you're addicted to.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
There lies the problem. I’ve never been able to force myself to do what most people do but my health is suffering so why aren’t I?!
New_Expectations5808@reddit
How should I know? Just leave your phone in a different room

😱

Are you 18 months old? It’s pretty common.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
Haha! I wish 🤭

Might be a form of FOMO as I have the same issue sometimes. Twice a week, I need to get up at 5am and I can never bring myself to go to sleep early as I have this weird feeling that I'll somehow miss something. I end up doing anything other than getting a decent sleep as a result and I hate myself every single time.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
Oh no. Maybe that’s it? The fear of missing out and yet there’s nothing to actually miss out on really, when I think about it. Interesting…
Silly-Canary-916@reddit
I've done it my whole life. The other night I was awake until after 5 and had to be up at 7. I will put off getting off the sofa, spend ages in the bathroom, watch something on my iPad, maybe put a podcast on, start looking things up on my phone, it just goes on and on. It's like my body just doesn't want me to go to sleep even when I'm tired. It tends to be worse when my depression is bad, part of it is just not wanting the day to end as I dread the thought of another one. It's hard to explain it unless like you, you do it too!
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah, I take ages to get ready for bed and yes, I use my phone for reading or social media at that point. It must be so difficult for you to not want the next day to come.
Affectionate-Owl9594@reddit
Revenge procrastination?
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
Wow. I’ve never heard of that but it sounds similar to what I’m doing…
BriefAmphibian7925@reddit
What do you mean by "won't let myself"? You don't go to bed when you should? Or you keep yourself awake when in bed? Etc.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
Yes, I keep myself awake!
BriefAmphibian7925@reddit
I find it useful to listen to audio content (podcasts, Youtube, audiobooks) as I go to sleep which is interesting enough to engage my mind but not exciting or something that makes me want to make notes etc. For me things like science/astronomy news and medieval history work well.
ASMR can also work very well if it's something you experience.
sushiewushie@reddit (OP)
I think I need to find something ‘just right’. I do sometimes put LBC on a timer to fall asleep to when I know I really, really need to sleep but sometimes I’ll want to carry on listening!
bishibashi@reddit
Need to open yourself to the nightman
