Something not political?

I know a lot of people are probably going to have some feelings about this, but whatever. I'm just looking for a site that isn't like Reddit, where literally every space has been taken over by politics. Politics are important, yes, but I don't need them in every corner of my life, so I'm looking for a more mellow platform. Maybe one hobbyist-aligned with writing, but a place that is more apolitical or just not at all. Or at least one where it's segregated off. Because after being bombarded daily, I've had enough. I still want interactions, just not the politics 24/7.
hastogord1@reddit
We launched a Reddit alternative called LetIt.
We don't care about politics but our focus is business.
You can read about us if you want to.

CertifiedBiogirl@reddit
Must be nice to have the privilege of having the option of shutting politics out of your life. For a lot of us it's literally life or death.
DekeaSaurusRex@reddit
LOL
NorthSideScrambler@reddit
Name two people who have died from ignoring political content on social networks.
ecafyelims@reddit
You can avoid political subs and discussions on Reddit, but I don't know of any alternatives to Reddit that has less politics.
midgitsuu@reddit
The problem is you really can't even when you try. I've muted countless subs over the years and yet people are still posting political bullshit in subs that have nothing to do with politics. It's getting to the point that I'm about to just stop using Reddit altogether because this shit is exhausting.
Realistic-Service35@reddit
Plus, I don't want to JUST see my curated feed. I like seeing stuff from other random subreddits every now and then. That's how I got into mini-painting. But damn, you gotta dig for that kind of content anymore.
ecafyelims@reddit
Idk. I am able to find many subs where politics are minimal. Sure, some individual will comment about politics here and there, but it's easy enough to skip those.
arbitrosse@reddit
Haven't seen that yet. Even the most anodyne subs always have someone who can't resist making what they perceive to be a clever remark about their preferred American politician, or their most hated American politician.
ecafyelims@reddit
Sure, there's always someone, but the individuals are easily ignored.
arbitrosse@reddit
Not according to OP.

I never said i didn't. I said i didn't want to discuss it 24/7. Or are you incapable of reading?
ecafyelims@reddit
You are part of the reason there is so much politics. You contribute to it. You feed it.
Do you know the kind of person who often complains, "I hate drama," while they are often the ones fanning the drama flames? No need to answer.
If you find that you're bombarded by politics on a daily basis, please consider that when you comment with politics, you are in fact bombarding another redditor with politics. And when those people reply, you will get bombarded back.
It's a vicious cycle. It's like a stray dog. If you feed it, politics will come back day and day again.
Don't feed into it, and the politics will stop coming back to you for food.
beershitz@reddit
Why should we have to keep our mouths shut and not be allowed to comment? Why should we have to read circlejerk after circlejerk in every single sub and “ignore it”? I know they’re the majority and this website is based on voting. But it’s tyranny. Brigading, banning, even the moderators. They want to push us out. They want us to leave, or at least not be heard or seen. And by us, I don’t mean right wingers, I mean anybody who wants to point out that they’re circlejerking and it’s exhausting.
I’m not going to stop commenting, I don’t give a fuck. And OP should be able to get into a conversation in a political sub (or at least post a political hot take in a sub specifically for hot takes) and not have their entire point of view invalidated. The problem is politics where it shouldn’t be and the answer is not “just ignore it.”
ecafyelims@reddit
I'm sorry, I think I wasn't clear.
You don't have to stay silent. I encourage you to speak up. I enjoy the open discussions and I know many others do too. You should be able to get involved, and you clearly can.
My comment above was only along the lines of "If you don't want to be surrounded by politics, then one thing you can do is stop surrounding yourself with politics."
It's like saying you don't like seeing so many people wearing skimpy clothing while at a beach wearing skimpy clothing. Not only are you doing what you don't want to see, you're expecting others to not do it and contributing to the normalization of the behavior.
I know, "OP shouldn't have to," and I agree. However, that's a victim mindset, and a more empowered mindset is what you can do about it. I gave a recommendation for what OP can do if they want to see less politics, which is what they asked for.
Again, though, that's only for those who want to see LESS politics. For the rest, please, talk politics. I enjoy it, especially when it's a good discussion with someone I don't currently share the viewpoint.
That's where I learn and grow and enjoy it.
_OriamRiniDadelos_@reddit
Literally go to hobby subreddits. Not all of Reddit is people posting bait or questions that invite broad discussion.
You just like arguments and so that’s what you find. Or you haven’t explored enough
FreakyT@reddit
This 100%! To add to this, avoid r/popular and r/all, and only subscribe to niche topic-focused subreddits will excise most politics.
If OP is interested in tech, HackerNews is generally fairly apolitical, but that's just tech so it might not be enough.
Wellidk_dude@reddit (OP)
I've been trying to avoid it and show fewer posts. It's not that I don't think it's important. it's just I can't with this 24/7 overload lol. Empathy burnout, all that jazz. But it's even bled over into niche communities I'm a member of that has zero to do with politics.
00ezgo@reddit
Even the cat subs on reddit are filled with people screaming leftist politics at the sky.
Mastersord@reddit
Its the constant negativity for me. The doom and gloom without any hope or answers. Just blame and “it’s so much worse than you think” comments.
I had to unsubscribe from r/technology and r/comics is starting to vier that way as well. I’m only browsing my home feed nowadays as well.
The news is less negative than Reddit comments and they feed on rage and anxiety.
LastCallKillIt@reddit
If only that were so.
InstructionOk1784@reddit
Dude...even the non political subs are going political and if you dont agree with them... Banned.
The amount of bans I got aways fall under these reasons.
Not agreeing with killing CEOs...
Not wanting to devote my life hating trump
Not wanting to talk about Elan Musk
sjfhajikelsojdjne@reddit
If you are looking at your own front page you shouldn't be getting any other subreddits in there. Check your settings, it sounds like you have "suggested subreddits" turned on or something. I ONLY see what I'm subscribed to unless I browse by "popular".
frodo_swaggins233@reddit
I didn't know this was a setting. Good to know!
Surous@reddit
Usually that’s done by bots trawling subreddits or post history to see if you ever commented somewhere
This is why you should block automod bots when you can,
sjfhajikelsojdjne@reddit
Sorry, was the reply meant for me?
boundegar@reddit
It's not necessarily political. I'm permanently banned from some UFO sub because I expressed skepticism. There's hundreds of orthodoxies out there.
LastCallKillIt@reddit
If you don't agree with them or even just say something pretty reasonably neutral DOWNVOTE HELL. I just unfollowed r/gravelcycling for this the other day.
ecafyelims@reddit
For 2 and 3, in order to ban you, how did they find out that you didn't want to talk about Elon nor devote your life to having Trump?

Eh, yeah, that used to be the case, and it used to bot invade every space, but now it's constant bombardment even in niche subs. I don't mind it sometimes, but it's also bad for mental health, at least for me. So, I'm trying to find a thing I can scroll through. See some interesting things and not get hit with it every 5 seconds. I'm pretty reclusive and laid up with physical issues, it is what it is until I get the surgery I need on my spine. So SM is my socialization for right now, and I'm just trying to find something more relaxed.
arbitrosse@reddit
Have you tried Pixelfed for hobbyist content? I am very new on it, and it is very quiet (in a good way). It seems to be best to follow hashtags related to your niche interests, rather than individual feeds.
As far as socialization, use google or your search engine of choice this way: put the keywords related to your niche interest in inverted commas/quotation marks, put the word forum in inverted commas/quotation marks, put a negative sign next to the word Trump with no space in between, and put a negative sign next to the word Kamala with no space in between. Or whichever politicians you are most sick of reading about.
Do NOT use the Google "forums" option, though. It will show you dreck like reddit and Quora.

AlpacaM4n@reddit
I have been checking out stuff on Substack, still kind of getting into it but you can follow people who write about things you are interested in. I have still seen some politics, but I think you may have more luck there vs here. Also maybe finding forums dedicated specifically to your interests
ecafyelims@reddit
It's recent after an election, so worse than usual. Also, more things are political now. Vaccines are political.
It will subside, but stick to apolitical subs and don't feed into it or reply, and it's not so bad
Smart_Philosophy_109@reddit
No you can't avoid it. I've noticed almost all subs are super leftists running it.
Repulsive_Spend_7155@reddit
Just voice a differing opinion on one of them, and simply put all the ones that ban you on ignore. Thats what I did, worked great.
Realistic-Service35@reddit
Yeah, I agree. This place is just becoming insufferable. It's why Twitter sucks. It's why Facebook sucks. It's just too much politics.
I need a place to go during the day to look at memes, interesting bits of culture and the occasional funny videos without all the doom and political posts.
rimu@reddit
Lemmy has no content filters but PieFed, which federates with Lemmy, does. When you sign up it asks how much Trump/Musk you can tolerate and adds an appropriate filter for you. See https://join.piefed.social/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/trump_musk.png for a screenshot.
LonelyPrincessBoy@reddit
Discords in your community of interest. Lacks the gems of reddit but more community building interacting with same posters. Agree it's only been a week but reddit is unenjoyable i suppose until 2028 or beyond.
Independent_Hat9988@reddit
I know this is a few days old and I'll probably get down voted for this but: Tumblr
When you create your account you can go into settings so that it doesn't reccomend you anything on your main feed, so you only see people you follow, in reverse chronological order of posting
When you just start out on Tumblr, you might want to follow a tag you like (for example "Breaking Bad") to see posts in that tag on your feed and then find a few blogs to follow and go from there, so it's not a complete ghost town on your dash.
Tumblr has a lot of fandom and/or hobby related blogs. For example there are bird and cat owners that just post about fun animal facts and pictures of them taking care of their babies and I've been following them for years. There's also a lot of artists, there's blogs that post positive stuff exclusively, etc
With anywhere, you'll probably see the occasional political post, tho
Jodaichi@reddit
How are RSS feeds doing these days?
I miss the days of having what I wanted aggregated for me.
dondablox@reddit
Doesn't help that reddit is a complete echo chamber, I wouldn't mind if there wasn't a clear bias and it was more back and forth debate rather than a circle jerk. I just use discord channels now.
midgitsuu@reddit
I'm at that point. I've tried really hard to moderate my feed and block all political subs and yet, people still find a way to bring politics into non political subs. Right now I just saw a post on r/gaming with 25k upvotes of a screenshot of a Nazi character from sniper elite that looks like Elon Musk. People need to get a life.
top5a@reddit
This shit is so tiresome. Even the WindowsXP subreddit has now gone political. Politics has always been prevalent on the internet, and it is fun debating/arguing/shitposting, but it used to be contained to political sections of forums or sites. So many forums died as digg and reddit grew, and, now, mods have pushed political purity testing into even hobbyist subreddits that have zero to do with politics, let alone random American political squabbles. The only politics that should be relevant to everyone here are ones that threaten/affect the site itself, such as SOPA/PIPA and Section 230 rulings/debates/protests. Otherwise, it is ridiculous to ban people for posting an X link in a different sub or for commenting in a different sub, or for creating "Nazi lists" which are being promulgated in some subs and being de facto sanctioned by moderators. Fucking great, witch hunt people who just want to read about and chat about their hobbies in peace. Not everyone is an American spending 20+ hours a day freaking out about every [current thing].
carloscreates@reddit
Everyone wants to stick their head in the sand until it starts affecting them personally.
midgitsuu@reddit
It would be more bearable if the discourse didn't skew strongly in 1 direction for basically every single major subreddit. If there was balanced discussion, I wouldn't be complaining, but even if you make counter arguments against the mods or hivemind, you get buried. It's honestly very dystopian and it's rich hearing you people defend it or come to these idiotic, oversimplified, and naive conclusions like "you can't rationalize with a fascists" when you're simply trying to point out flaws in their viewpoints.
Mastersord@reddit
Everyone looking at the issues feels hopeless. No one is proposing a direction to go. Just “we’re screwed”. What’s the point of engaging if no one has anything to contribute other than that?
It’s like your doctor telling you over and over again that you have terminal cancer and you are going to die soon in horrible agony without offering any treatment ideas, but it’s happening every single day and multiple times a day, and it’s not just you but the entire world.
It takes a toll on you. Someone described something like “empathy burnout”. You can’t even address how it makes you feel because it’s constantly happening in almost every other discussion. The only way to keep sane is to disconnect and disengage.
The only other thing I’ve found to help is to talk to other people outside of Reddit or at least outside of the “doom chambers”.
Level7Cannoneer@reddit
Gonna be honest, you’re not going to avoid politics for the next 4+ years. Every single platform and hobby is being affected by the new president (tarrifs will create discussion in any forum dedicated to tech, lumber, and food) and you’re not going to find any reprieve.
Delicious_Ease2595@reddit
Not all communities are American users
ricocotam@reddit
But all communities are affected by Trump
midgitsuu@reddit
And any left wing political figures too. I don't want to see political BS from either side in places like gaming subreddits. I use hobby subreddits to escape political discussion.
Delicious_Ease2595@reddit
No they don't
BTC_is_waterproof@reddit
OP is looking for no politics. You responded with a political comment. And it gets upvotes
Oh Reddit 🤡

Social media is inherently political, it’s impossible to avoid politics and use social media. Even if you managed to filter out keywords stuff would slip through. If you don’t like it, don’t take the bait and move on.
frodo_swaggins233@reddit
No idea why you'd say that. There are definitely ways to use social media and avoid politics for the most part.

Get over it or delete the app. Politics are important they are impacting a lot of people. People want to talk about it

I've successfully weeded out politics entirely from one account on Bluesky by:
Now, I have a second account which is only for politics, so generally if someone's posting politics but I still like them, I will just put them on the second account. But it's very nice to be able to switch between them and be politics free when I want to be.
BTC_is_waterproof@reddit
You can do the same on X

I don't believe X has subscribable block lists, starter packs, nor does it have the "nuclear block" of bluesky.

You can try. But your entire way of life is considered political. You probably just assumed before that everything you did was just."normal" and not political.

I’m a writer. All writing is political and writers are deeply political and fucking hate what’s happening right now. Good luck.
Wellidk_dude@reddit (OP)
So, did you just read this and decide to get offended or what? I said politics are important. I didn't state my stance on the current situation. I merely said I don't want it in every corner of my life every five seconds for my own mental health. I'm allowed to take care of myself mentally. If that offends you then you should take a good long hard look at yourself. Also not all writing is political that's an assumption you have made in your own mind and a gross over generalization of a very complex topic...that i would have thought a "writer" would have known.
Fltzyy@reddit
Projection??? Lmao
Drafonni@reddit
Btw, “all art is political” translates into “I want my stupid politics shoved into everything” in case you didn’t know. People that say that aren’t to be trusted.
cactusmask@reddit
Writing is political in that it's reacting to the world in one way or another. So nobody has to jam anything into anything else, it's just a reflection of the world and readers react to the writing in the same way. The world is political, people are political, people live in the world. People can pull whatever they want from writing, because that's the point of art. All art will be filtered through their experiences from being a person in the world. In this case, someone read what I wrote and took the wrong thing from it, and now we're talking about who can and can't be trusted. It's just how it works. It's not about putting secret messages in art, or forcing anyone to think anything, its just the nature of the thing.
cactusmask@reddit
Not sure why you read it like I was offended. I wasn’t. I don’t even know what to be offended about. I’m saying good luck finding a place full of writers that isn’t full of politics.
boxer_dogs_dance@reddit
Tildes allows topic blocking, both by tag and by subgroup. Within a short time after posting, all threads are tagged.

It's hard to find social media that is completely apolitical. Maybe forums on specific topics is your answer.
The best practice for you might be to follow things that are apolitical by nature and unfollow if something political appear.

Electronic-Phone1732@reddit
mbin (compatible with lemmy), and avoid political communities, you are in control of your feed.
intellifone@reddit
Everything is political. Sorry. That sounds like it’s not true. But it is. You get deep enough into a hobby and it’s political. I know you want to minimize it but I’m not really sure that you can. Maybe specific topics? Like if you don’t want to hear about Trump specifically, but that’s hard because everyone has an opinion on how it relates to some corner of their life.
As a society we need to stop treating political like political is some “other” to avoid. No. Avoiding politics is how we got ourselves into the ultra divided mess we’re in. By avoiding politics we allowed the ultra involved to take over. Not just right wing but left also. Even though the right is in power now. When regular people think of politics as a hobby rather than a part of life, it allows the enthusiastic fringe to take over.
Knitting is political. Where are you getting your yarn from? Chinese slave labor or uber expensive hippy organic fair trade sources?
Surfing is political. The beach is crowded or there’s pollution in the water or your favorite brand of board suddenly went ultra MAGA.
Lol. Writing is political. You literally mentioned one of the lost political hobbies.
Music is political.
Gardening is political. The kinds of plants you’re allowed to bring in, what seeds are available to buy is political. Ever heard of Monsanto?
Bird watching is political. Where have all the birds gone? They used to migrate here but now they don’t. Oh climate change.
Fitness is definitely political. Every single influencer seems to have an agenda.
I asked ChatGPT after I typed this up and gave it my examples and it came up with puzzles and origami which I’m struggling to argue with.
Once you start digging into supply chains, influencers, or broader cultural contexts, even the most seemingly apolitical hobbies can intersect with politics in some way. This is because politics, in its broadest sense, influences almost every aspect of our lives, including what materials are available, how they’re produced, and even how hobbies are shared or celebrated.
The reality is that true apoliticism is rare because our systems, economies, and cultures are interconnected. Even puzzles and origami can have deeper connections like the labor conditions in factories where puzzles are produced or the cultural origins and representation in origami communities. You decide support only artisan, local or domestic puzzle makers (whoops, back to political) and find that Etsy is flooded with crappy Chinese products.
That said, you can try to participate in a hobby in a way that minimizes political considerations, focusing instead on the personal joy or challenge of the activity. But that requires active intent to avoid the political which itself, I’d argue, is a political choice.
I just think your premise is fundamentally flawed. Well intentioned for your mental health. But flawed. The further you push away from politics, the more room you give it to invade every corner of your life and make itself an unwelcome guest in your ever shrinking bubble of apolitical safety.
Fltzyy@reddit
