Schedule with a ‘k’ sound has been a legitimate British pronunciation for literally decades on decades now. I think it’s probably time to get over it. UK Reddit’s issue with tiny pronunciations things like this always reeks of classism too. I’m from the north east, anyone saying it with a soft ‘sh’ sound sounds either posh or trying to be posh. Anyone who tried to correct this would sound like that BBC interview guy arguing with someone from boro over the pronunciation of ‘tomorrow’.

I read it more than I hear it. In the last 5 years especially, I’m seeing more and more Brits using “mom” instead of mum etc. Children and young teens seem to have more Americanisms in their speech, which I assume is because of how social media has exploded so much in recent years, but I worry a bit when I hear it from younger children (7 and under, including toddlers) who are still learning to structure and formulate their sentences. I worry they’re getting too much screen time and not enough one-to-one interaction with their family.

British people have been complaining about the Americanisation of British English for as long as the USA has been a cultural superpower (and probably before). Whether it's a bad thing or not, it's happened and will continue to happen regardless of whether you like it or not. You can only control your own language, so it's best to make peace with Americanisms elsewhere.

I find that funny as a Scotsman because I think our language has become a bit too anglicised. My Granny and mum both spoke like Robert Burns. When I started school in the 80s teachers used to tell me to speak "The Queens English" But I spoke exactly like my family and local community. I also won awards for Scots poetry recitals so it was a bit confusing. A few Americanised words is not so bad, language is fluid like that, but being told off at school for using your native language is on another level. Tbf I had a younger teacher when I was doing highers in the late 90s and she encouraged me to do more creative writing in Scots.

That requires a shared understanding of the signified. If you ask me for a cookie and there are only biscuits, it's not communicating. If you say 'I could care less' that means you do care a bit, so again you've not communicated what you mean. Likewise if you are in the States and say 'let's watch a film' people will think you are about to pull the 8mm projector out.

Language evolves, I just don't care. As long as I understand the words it isn't a problem, like if you said Americanized, sidewalk diapers, as examples. The youth are always going to come with dumbass words for things that sound nonsensical part of aging is realising you just don't need to know or understand the nonsense of teenagers means. I grew up with Ali G and adopted the whole "Iz it coz I iz black" persona wearing Fubu (i am a whitey). I can't complain about babies saying Skikbidi Rizz.

I have to correct my son sometimes as he uses very Americanised words somtimes because he likes to watch American YouTubers. Things like sidewalk, cookie (for biscuit), paycheck, jaywalking, trash can, garbage spring to mind. I do explain that these words are Americanisations and explain the context. For example, jaywalking is an American only concept and "paycheck" is common in the US as many workers still get paid with a cheque. While some Americanised words creeping in at OK, some words are just "too American" to make sense in a UK context. I do also explain to him that even though Americans speak the same language, they are very different culturally to the UK.

The one that really, really bothers me is that “eugh” has been replaced with “ew”. I think it’s partly because I don’t quite see them as equivalents, as I see “ew” used much more broadly in American TV e.g. Eugh: Something is disgusting / a bit smelly Ew: As above, but also for snobbery, as in “Ew, I wouldn’t be seen dead in that.”

I honestly had no clue that movie was the American term and film the British term lol. I’ve personally been a victim to these Americanisms myself like saying trash instead of garbage or “ga-raj” instead of “ga-rij” but I’ve rewired my brain to say these terms the right way since. But me and my brothers like speaking American jokingly that it does mess with that wiring I’ve also noticed this is more of a thing amongst non british or non white people. Anecdotally, my white friends are constantly correcting me and our other friends over certain words/pronunciations lol

I mean language evolves, especially over recent decades as cultures blur more due to online spaces closing geographic divides (but really it's always been evolving). It doesn't impact me in any meaningful way as long as people are still able to convey the meaning they desire. I really don't care if someone calls it a driver's license instead of a driving licence. Obviously there are some very specific words where meaning is actually different. The main one is the word 'quite' which is usually magnifies the adjective in US and usually (but not always) moderates the adjective in UK English. And some specific niche phrases like to 'table' something in a meeting/discussion, which has opposite meanings in American and British English.

If I'm talking, I use British English, but on the internet I often use American English because the audience I'm interacting with are usually mostly American and I like to try to write clearly so I don't cause confusion or get loads of follow-up questions. The only American word I have fully adopted in speech is yarn. In the UK we've always referred to the stuff we knit with as wool and the shop selling it as the wool shop, even though a lot of what we use and what they sell is acrylic. Since joining Ravelry, years ago now, I use the word yarn and refer to the shop as an LYS (local yarn store), which is something I picked up from Ravelry. I actually prefer it since yarn can be made of animal, plant and/or synthetic fibres, so it's more accurate than just saying wool. I think some of the very old ladies at knit and natter don't like it. I'm never going to call a bumbag a fanny pack though.

I hate to tell you this, but the Atlantic has been a cultural conveyor belt for several centuries, and languages & dialects develop over time. Maybe it depends on where you live. I've never heard a Brit say cookie except when describing a very specific type of biscuit (the large, soft kind, usually with chocolate chips, usually bought from Millie's or o bag of 5 from a supermarket). I've heard 'movie' used instead of film on occasion, and sometimes say it myself, but that's been the case for decades. It's certainly nothing new. Britain is an incredible island for language, with colloquial variations occuring frequently. Just think about all the words for a bread roll (or cob to me). Fortunately, although there may have been some creep, I think it's small enough not to threaten the joy that makes up the language of our nation.

It’s the car ones that make me irrationally angry because so many people don’t realise they’re Americanisms. We don’t have ‘license plates’ or ‘windshields’.

I’m from a part of Scotland that has a strong dialect that’s honestly more like another language so we’ve always had to be a bit bilingual and the Americanisms tend to be in our “phone voice” language although I have noticed that diaper seems to have become a common word for little kids playing with dolls.

Yes lots of people seem to be saying 'takeout' rather than 'takeaway' too. It would be a shame if they was no dielectical diversity and everyone spoke like American YouTubers.
