Would this be a bad car to buy? I’d only have it for 2 maybe 3 years or maybe even less. It would be a daily driver though.

So I found this 2016 bmw 428i for sale with 129k miles. I test drove it and it seemed like it drove nice and the price isn't too high. But that kind of worries me because they are asking $10,000 for it. It is at a dealership (Audi) and they gave me the inspection sheet and everything came back good except for the break pads will need to be replaced. I understand it has high mileage and maintenance could get expensive if a problem occurs but it seems like it has been well maintained according to the auto check and it has an auto check score of 84. I personally don't mind working for a car and putting money aside as I am still young (18) and don't really fo anything so I work for fun and don't have bills to pay and am about to get a much better job making double pay. Would it be dumb if I bought it? I am highly invested into BMW and would love one.

run...run...run...Buy a reliable car you can afford not a money pit.

How about an older Mazda (like a 2017-2019)? I’ve also been looking at Mazda 3 and 6 since it’s what my mom has and I love it. I drive like 300-400 miles a week so I also know bmw I want also isn’t a good choice at all😭

Those are both good options

You're 18. Don't leash yourself to a car payment. In the next 5 years your life is likely going to go through an unspeakable number of changes.

BMW = Bring My Wallet. You're 18. Stay away from European and British cars until you can afford one without sacrifices in other areas of your life. Get a nice reliable Japanese or American car and take road trips, go to concerts or other things an 18 year old should do rather than working just to keep your car on the road. Your dream car can wait a few years. My 2 cents.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
Honestly I love working, I’ve been working since I was a kid so it’s just something I want to do. But after seeing all these replies about how much it’ll truly cost me it isn’t working my life away for a bmw that isn’t even my dream bmw😭 all yall just saved me from making a dumb decision because I’m ngl I was going to go back to dealership tomorrow and buy it but now I’m glad I’m now😭🙏🏻
9BALL22@reddit
Sorry to burst your bubble, you'll have your dream car sooner or later, but this one just isn't it.
SlimJesusKeepIt100@reddit
Fuck that new car shit. Back when I needed a car to get to work in 2022 what did I get? A 1997 BMW 528i with 124k miles. Yeah it had some issues here and there. Take care of it and it'll take care of you.
jca_ftw@reddit
You should DEFINITELY BUY IT. It's the ulitmate driving experience. You can't learn from your mistakes until you make them. The good news is you won't have to worry about blinkers and low beams while you own it.

I bought a 4 year old BMW X5 with 65,000 miles one time.
Within the first 30 days of ownership I had a $1,200 repair bill.
Within 6 months I had to repeat the repair.
Within 1 year I was told it had a computer error they had never seen before and then it magically started working again.
Within 1.5 years I traded it in on a Lexus and ran for the hills.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
How long did the Lexus last for? I haven’t done much research on them but have also looked at a few of them. 2 cars I’ve looked at the most so far has been bmw and Mazdas.
Badbowtie91@reddit
It was a 2012 BMW X5
Traded it for a 2018 Lexus RX350 with like 28,000 miles.
Sold it at almost 200,000 miles.
Only ever needed fluid changes, gas, tires.
Apparently the RX350's are hellaciously reliable.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
Sounds like you traded it in for a better car overall 😅 dang man I knew they were more reliable than bmw but I didn’t know they were that reliable 😭 do you know anything about the Lexus is300? It’s one I’ve kind of looked at but haven’t really done research on.
CarelessCoconut5307@reddit
yeah buying any BMW is a bad idea
Agitated_Ad6162@reddit
Nope it is a garage queen with that many miles
Electrical-Money6548@reddit
Yeah, it'd be real dumb.
But you're 18 and most likely won't listen to us.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
Oh no I’ll definitely listen😅 I don’t want to bury myself into debt this young. It’s just I love bmws and want one so badly but also should wait til I can get a nicer one. Thank you for reply!
Western_Big5926@reddit
Get the best and newest Honda Civic you can. Manual. Don’t know how to drive one? You can get the basics in an afternoon . Fun fun fun! AND it won’t break.
Electrical-Money6548@reddit
The time will come where toys make sense, trust me. Time flies.
Stack cash when you're young, you won't regret it in the future.

Don't.
Just don't
NutzNBoltz369@reddit
Turbo and timing chain/timing guides.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
Are those the main issues with the 4 series? I knew about timing chain but was told mixed things about turbo.
NutzNBoltz369@reddit
Its the N20 series engines that you need to focus on, and not so much the model year.

An old saying
There's nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
Yup my friend had a 07 li and bought it for 2k, in just a few months spent like 7k in repairs. But he also abused the crap out of it and drove like an idiot because he thought it was funnh but now he doesn’t have a car😭
GOOSEBOY78@reddit
The maintenance on any BMW will kill your wallet and send you broke.
Actual_Cartoonist599@reddit
I’ve honestly thought the same thing I’ve always wanted a BMW they look and drive real nice but they are nightmares to work on if you don’t know what your doing. 10K is not worth that investment, you could get something way more reliable that will hold its value for that kind of money.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
Yeah this is what people have been saying😭 i definitely don’t know how to work on them enough and don’t want to bury myself into debt. I appreciate your reply! My friends have been giving me horrible advice so I’m glad I came here for advice instead
Actual_Cartoonist599@reddit
It also depends on how well you are with working on cars. The things I know about them is everything is made out of plastic, it all breaks. Also they have modules for everything that have communication issues. And also because it’s BMW they turn simple repairs into costly ones. You can look up on YouTube the biggest problems with that exact year and model and then see if your up for it.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
I know how to do all the basic maintenance routines but if it were to be a more serious issues then I wouldn’t know how. My moms friend knows a ton about bmws though and would probably teach me but i already know it’s going to be extremely costly for maintenance😅
grundlemon@reddit
Check insurance cost lol.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
The insurance isn’t bad because I can still be on my parents insurance, I’m just worried about the maintenance 😅
grundlemon@reddit
You sure? Call and get a quote if not.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
Yeah I’d be paying less than 200 because my parents use the drive easy thing to lower cost of insurance for me.
Just-Employment-3037@reddit
Honestly I would pass. It’s a low trim, with significant amount of miles on it. I would save up to get a newer car with less miles. Nothings worse than paying for repairs on a car you just bought.
DramaHot5394@reddit (OP)
Yeah and it comes with no warranty, ngl the truth sucks but I’m glad I came to Reddit because people here are honest😭 my friends irl just tell me to go buy it
