Budget build works great even for modern titles

Hey, just wanted to open up a discussion. I recently completed a build with ryzen 5 5600, RX 590, 32 gb of ram and ssd for 440 €. When I asked around different forums and such everyone warned me about how badly will this build run anything, but let me tell you, I am extremely happy. Running nearly everything at highest setting with around 50 to 60 fps, with relatively low 1%. I am quite content with low graphics as well, so I am quite sure that this build will get me a few more years of fun.
Just wanted to support other people on low budgets that it can still be worth it!

I feel like people forget that, especially at 1080p, the CPU carries the brunt of the load.
Yeah, your GPU is "old" but the CPU is not, it's quite capable and reasonably modern, so even though the GPU is comparatively old, it really doesn't matter much since the CPU is probably carrying everything anyways.

So I love cheap builds and hunting down components, but a RX 5700/ 6600 would make your experience so much better. Instead of 50-60 low, we're talking mid-high 90+ FPS
50 euros is cheap but how much do those cards cost? 150? Those cards (close to ps5) will get you 3 years easily

Still, that would very quickly raise the budget by 1/4,which is a lot. Plus the gpu is the least worrisome to replace, when new games that interest me in 1 to 2 years come out, I will again grab second hand gpu as needed.

And if I may, I would like to squeeze a bit more performance out of the ryzen for the future, if anyone has some tips on OC I would greatly appreciate it as the last time I did any oc was more than 10 years back with old i7. Thanks!

OC will give not really a big boost, but consumes much more power so it is not worth it. Ryzen is very well optimised. Looking out for an cheapo 5700x3d will be your best chance for a significant performance boost.

Is it just this chip that won't benefit much from OC? Because last time I overclocked i went from 3.5ghz to 4.5 and it was a huge performance boost

That's on very old chips, and a 1GHz jump, that must be a VERY old CPU.
Anything reasonably modern cannot be overclocked nearly as aggressively.

you can activate PBO and it will automaticly try to to get maximum performance. You can also do manual curve uptimisation for undervolt, but it will not give the incredible extra performance of something like an i7 2700K. But yeah try it.

Were you OC a Ryzen? I’ve seen big boosts in performance on Intel chips but not Ryzen chips atleast 5000 series and up

I thought about oc as more of a low future proofing, I hope that the cpu will last at least five years. But the possibility to swap into 5700x3d in the future is why I went for AM4 platform. Hopefully the game requirements wont skyrocket in next 3-5 years, I would like to get as much mileage as possible from the cpu.

I would look into memory overclocking. Since you have a non-X3D chip, memory speed and latency will be a limiting factor for performance. Increasing memory frequency and tightening timings should give you some decent gains without having a noticeable increase in power use.
As for CPU core overclocking, you could do a slight OC along with an undervolt to offset additional power draw and heat. You might as well if you enjoy tweaking hardware. I always tune every component I can.

Dude I'm gaming on my 7700 integrated graphics card while waiting to buy a gpu. It runs old games OK I'm surprised. I ran COD WAW zombies and it can hit 60fps on 1080p. Tries Tomb Raider 2013 and it can do 60fps medium 1080. But I'm mainly enjoying Civ V, it's a strategy game so fps don't matter much, I'm playing it on 1440p

Depends on what games you're trying to play. Some people think Witcher 3 is still a modern game, but that's almost 10 years old now. Same with cyberpunk. Game looks great, but it's over 4 years old now.
If you try to play the new Indiana Jones, Alan Wake 2, monster Hunter Wilds, etc, you might have a bad time.

Sometimes the advice you receive isn’t good advice! Of course it’s possible to build a decent PC on a strict budget. It’s all about realistic expectations! In which case, you weren’t expecting miracles and the system has exceeded what you set out to achieve.
I recently built a PC for a friend with a Six Core i5 8400, 16GB RAM and GTX 1080….. cost under £350 in parts and they’re thrilled with it (I’ll add a photo of it to my profile!) and it plays absolutely everything he wants it to play!
Enjoy your budget build in the knowledge you’re not paying £££‘s a month back on repayments for a PC that by the time it’s paid off is worth a fraction of what you originally paid! 💪 ❤️

Just a matter of expectations. It seems like you got a machine that will run games well enough for you, and that's all that really matters. I wouldn't handwave the people who warned you about it, though. If someone told me they were building these specs I would tell them there is a good chance it won't run things all that well. If they are trying to run 1080p at 50fps then yeah sure, it will handle things pretty well. That isn't what would jump into my mind, though.

I saw it, even tried it a few times at friends place, but honestly it does not really elevate the gaming experience for me at all, same goes for 4k and so on. I still immerse myself and enjoy the game as much as possible, even tho the higher specs monitors and resolutions can be eye candy.

Good to hear. If all you need is 60 fps you can save a ton. Some people have 100+ fps and still aren't happy.

So when you say support, do you mean you are going to refund them if they also buy used components but they end up dying after a couple of months while having no warranty? Yeah, dunno about gambling on 6y old components lasting for few more years when someone is short of money.

Of course, warranty is should always play factor in deciding which parts to get, you should always vet second hand as much as possible, however frankly, at 50 € I am willing to take that bet. If the card survives for one more year out of the card, and play around 3 hours per week, that just 0.10 € per hour, still a great bargain.
If I compare the second hand rx 590 to cheapest card I could buy in my country, which is Rx 6400 I get more performance for less than half the price, and honestly imo most people are not able to wreck their cards in the few years they usually use them.
There are components which are not good to skimp on, like PSU but I am always willing to take the bet on the GPU and I personally never had bad luck.

Seems to be working for you which is great. Your CPU/RAM combo is also good enough to upgrade to a significantly better GPU in the future and see some huge gains too

I got it second hand for 50 € which is an amazing bargain imho. Its a bit power hungry but nothing unmanagable, after replacing thermal pads and thermal paste, it runs even during prolonged use around 55-60 degrees max. Literally could not ask for better and more bang for buck effective card.
